Chronic Pain: Relationship To Depression, Eugenia Ursan
Chronic Pain: Relationship To Depression, Eugenia Ursan
Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers
The experience of chronic pain often interferes with family and social life, work performance, and overall quality of life. Depression symptoms in people with chronic pain may synergistically effect pain perception, negatively influencing the response to pain management and rehabilitation. Providers often fail to recognize and treat depression in patients presenting for treatment of chronic pain, and this failure can negatively impact rehabilitation outcomes. Importantly, limited research exists within the physical medicine setting about the relationship between chronic pain, symptoms of depression, and other variables like age and gender. Therefore, the relationship between chronic pain and depression in patients …

Implementation Of A Diabetes Treatment Algorithm In Primary Care For Use In The Adult Hispanic Population, Heidi Marshall Dillenbeck
Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers
Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (DM2) is a growing problem in the United States. Hispanic Americans have a higher prevalence of diabetes than Non-Hispanic Whites and suffer from more severe complications of the disease. Although advances in diabetes treatment over the last decade has improved, management of diabetes in primary care is inconsistent despite well-publicized guidelines from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). With the growth of the Hispanic population expected to reach 25 % of the U.S. population by 2050, practice changes must be made to improve diabetes management. The literature supports the …

The Effect Of An Enhanced Recovery Protocol In Bariatric Surgery Postoperative Pain, Brittani A. Seagren
The Effect Of An Enhanced Recovery Protocol In Bariatric Surgery Postoperative Pain, Brittani A. Seagren
Group: Nebraska Methodist College
Pain management in bariatric surgery patients is challenging because of multiple factors including chronic pain conditions, perception differences, and varied impacts of pain medications. As a result, postoperative pain tends to be poorly managed leading to increased opiate consumption in this population (Raebel et al., 2013). The enhanced recovery protocol is a newer multimodal postoperative management protocol with demonstrated improved pain control in abdominal surgery patients (Thompson et al., 2012). It has also been shown to be safe in bariatric surgery patients (Awad et al., 2012). In order to study its effects as a pain management protocol in bariatric surgery …

Electric Interrow Control Of Lupine Plants Does Not Adversely Affect The Neighboring Non-Target Lupine Plants, Catherine Borger, Miranda J. Slaven
Electric Interrow Control Of Lupine Plants Does Not Adversely Affect The Neighboring Non-Target Lupine Plants, Catherine Borger, Miranda J. Slaven
Journal articles
Interrow weed control is used in a wide range of crops, traditionally applied via physical cultivation or banded herbicide application. However, these methods may result in crop damage, development of herbicide resistance, or off-target environmental impacts. Electric interrow weed control presents an alternative, although its potential impact on crop yield requires further investigation. One of the modes of action of electric weed control is the continuous electrode–plant contact method, which passes a current through the weed and into the roots. As the current passes into the roots, it can potentially disperse through the soil to neighboring root systems. Such off-target …

Background: Although the physiological stress response is well established, self-reported stress has received less attention. Some validated measures assess task-related stress via self-report in English. However, no such measure exists in Germany. Aims: To address this research gap, we translated and validated the Short Stress State Questionnaire in German (SSSQ-G). It assesses stress-related affective states (e.g., anger) and appraisals (e.g., feelings of control). We expected to replicate the factor structure of the English SSSQ in the SSSQ-G. Methods: We included the SSSQ-G in five studies that induced stress either via the gold standard task for acute stress …
Stress On The Brain: An Investigation Into The Impact Of Stress On Learning, Memory, And Metamemory Processes, Felicia M. Chaisson
Stress On The Brain: An Investigation Into The Impact Of Stress On Learning, Memory, And Metamemory Processes, Felicia M. Chaisson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
While acute anxiety or stress has been shown to enhance certain cognitive functions, such as memory for emotionally salient stimuli, its effects on memory for emotionally neutral information remain ambiguous. Successful memory encoding and retrieval often involve control processes—both self-initiated and directed—that dictate organization during learning. Previous research indicates that these processes facilitate the contextual binding and organization of information. However, multi-domain evidence suggests that stress during encoding may be disrupted due to changes in neural mechanisms at play. This dissertation explores how stress impairs cognitive control, identifies potential underlying neural correlates, and examines broader metacognitive influences. Chapter 1 begins …
