The findings revealed beginning teachers of students with EBD are caregivers in need of specific care to meet both their own needs and those of their students. Implications for educator preparation providers …

Situational Teaching In Nursing Effectiveness Of Workplace Violence Prevention, Jin-Lain Ming, Hei-Mei Huang, Shiao-Pei Hung

Leadership Connection

Session presented on Monday, September 19, 2016:

Workplace violence (WPV) is a serious issue in nursing in the healthcare setting. Healthcare workers are nearly four times more likely to be injured and require time away from work as a result of workplace violence (WPV) than all workers in the private sector combined. Prevention focused education is an important strategy to reduce the risk of violence. Patient violence against nurses in their work environments is a widespread global concern. A high prevalence of violent events impacts the well-being of nurses and may also impair overall ward climate. However, it has been …

Neurobiology Of Sexual Assault, Erin Misch, Denise Saint Arnault

Leadership Connection

Session presented on Sunday, September 18, 2016:

Sexual assault is a widespread problem. Nationally 19.3% of all women have reported being raped and 43.9% of all women have reported sexual assault other than rape (however, it is estimated that only 16% of these incidences are reported to law enforcement). A literature review was conducted and the goal of this research is to apply neurobiological theory of tonic immobility to understand underreporting of sexual assault. Tonic immobility (AKA 'rape-induced paralysis') is defined as an uncontrollable mammalian response in fearful and inescapable dangerous situations. Driven by the reptilian brain, this is a …

Intimate Partner Violence And Failure To Thrive In Children: A Literature Review, Pamela C. Kimeto

Leadership Connection

Session presented on Friday, September 26, 2014:

Failure to thrive is best described as inadequate growth or the inability to maintain growth, usually in early childhood. It is a sign of under nutrition (Gahagen, 2006; Levy, A., Levy, A., & Zangeten, 2009). In the United States, FTT is seen in 5-10% in primary care settings and in 3-5% in hospital settings (Cole & Lanham, 2011; Daniel, Kleis & Cemeroglu, 2008). Traditionally, the causes of FTT were subdivided into organic (medical) and nonorganic (social or environmental). There is increasing recognition that in many children the cause is multifactorial and includes biologic, …

Impact Of Individual And Neighborhood Factors On Cardiovascular Risk In White Hispanic Women And Men Compared To White Non-Hispanic Women And Wen, Tanya Marie Cohn

Leadership Connection

Session presented on Friday, September 26, 2014:

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality for adults in the United States regardless of ethnicity. Yet, cardiac and noncardiac-related risk factors vary by ethnicity, as does mortality rate. Specifically, Hispanics in the United States have a higher prevalence of risk factors compared to non-Hispanic Whites, but lower overall cardiovascular-related mortality rate (Daviglus et al., 2012). This unexplained difference in risk versus mortality argues the need for the ability to accurately assess cardiovascular risk in order to provide appropriate treatment plans, medication, and behavioral interventions. This disparity suggest that other factors …

Adapting An Evidence-Based Insomnia Practice Guideline For Use In A University Healthcare Setting, Maria M. Denny Oct 2024

Adapting An Evidence-Based Insomnia Practice Guideline For Use In A University Healthcare Setting, Maria M. Denny

Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers

Recent evidence-based practice guidelines (EBPGs) recommend cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as first-line treatment for adults with chronic insomnia, with pharmacotherapy as a secondary option. Pharmacotherapy is often used in primary care settings, which have limited access to specialty CBT-I services. Proven lower-intensity CBT-I components and delivery modes can be customized for primary care. The purpose of this DNP project was to adapt an insomnia EBPG for use at a university health service with integrated primary care and mental health resources. The integrated Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (i-PARIHS) framework guided this project, involving primary care and mental …

Impact Of Teaching Breathing Techniques On Patient Health Outcomes: A Systematic Review, Kathleen Benjamin Rickard, Jennifer Reich, Dorothy J. Dunn Oct 2024

Impact Of Teaching Breathing Techniques On Patient Health Outcomes: A Systematic Review, Kathleen Benjamin Rickard, Jennifer Reich, Dorothy J. Dunn

Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers

The United States has some of the most expensive health care world wide, with an increase in chronic illness, poorer outcomes, and fragmentation of care. Patients seek integrative or alternative methods of care in order to participate and improve their own health outcomes. Promoting cost effective, useful, and safe tools for patients to learn during an office visit allows patients to participate in their own care for improved health. The clinical question for this systematic review is: What is the evidence for teaching breathing techniques in primary care to improve health outcomes? Evidence in the literature shows that while breath …
