Sars-Cov-2 Infection History Is Positively Correlated With Frequency Of Psychotic Symptoms In Schizophrenia, Jackson D. Beecher
Sars-Cov-2 Infection History Is Positively Correlated With Frequency Of Psychotic Symptoms In Schizophrenia, Jackson D. Beecher
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Previous work in human and animal studies has implicated aberrant insular cortex (IC) activity in the pathophysiology of hallucinations. Of note, the IC overlaps with the olfactory cortex (OC), a region of the brain that receives extensive projections from sensory neurons of the olfactory epithelium. SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is a highly infectious coronavirus with a demonstrated ability to cause anosmia; the virus does this by colocalizing with and damaging support cells in the olfactory epithelium, ultimately leading to alterations in olfactory receptor cell signaling to the OC. Given the overlap between OC and IC, we asked the question of whether COVID-19 …

The Pathophysiology Of The Death Of Jesus The Christ, C. Thomas Black
The Pathophysiology Of The Death Of Jesus The Christ, C. Thomas Black
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Centuries-long speculation continues regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of the Savior. Over the past century, the Savior’s tribulations between the Last Supper and his death on the cross have been scrupulously examined from a medical viewpoint. In this article I review many of these studies and, using current medical acumen, propose additional inferences and explanations based on scriptural, medical, and historical accounts. The evidence suggests that at some point between Gethsemane and his last moments on the cross, the Lord’s body was pushed beyond the limit that a normal mortal could endure. The Lord did, however, endure and completed …

Regenerative agriculture—a farming practice that sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) into the soil—has potential to turn into big business in this climate crisis. If farmers can accurately measure the amount of trapped carbon in their soil, they can sell that stored carbon as a “carbon credit,” a tradeable certificate representing the right to emit one metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) or the equivalent amount of another greenhouse gas. As more than seventy countries race to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in order to meet Paris Agreement1 goals, carbon credits are becoming the “new currency” to meet or exceed …

Cryptic Lineages Matter For Coral Conservation Under Climate Change, Matías Gómez Corrales
Cryptic Lineages Matter For Coral Conservation Under Climate Change, Matías Gómez Corrales
Open Access Dissertations
Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, yet we do not fully grasp the extent of their diversity or the mechanisms driving the evolution of these rich ecosystems. In recent decades, coral cover has decreased worldwide due to rising seawater temperatures caused by human activities. This thermal stress leads to coral bleaching (i.e., the loss of endo-photosymbiotic microalgae), resulting in widespread coral mortality. Despite this, some corals can withstand increased temperatures that are lethal to most conspecifics. These unprecedented coral losses and different species-specific responses to global warming pose the challenge of losing biodiversity …
Societal Impacts Of Harmful Macroalgal Blooms On Caribbean Communities, Kenneth Hamel
Societal Impacts Of Harmful Macroalgal Blooms On Caribbean Communities, Kenneth Hamel
Open Access Dissertations
Pelagic Sargassum species, long considered a vital component of Caribbean ecosystems, began to arrive on and near shore in unprecedented quantities starting in 2011; these arrivals have transformed many Caribbean people’s perspectives of these macroalgae from a native benefit to an alien invader, and are now regarded widely as a harmful algal bloom (HAB). HABs often receive attention for the ecological and economic damage they present, but other human dimensions are less commonly considered, and this is doubly true of Sargassum events. This dissertation was intended to fill increasingly pronounced research gaps by providing exploratory evidence that can be useful …

Interactions Of Caffeine With Anticancer Drugs Studied By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Baylee Parish
Interactions Of Caffeine With Anticancer Drugs Studied By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Baylee Parish
Theses
Caffeine can form stacking through pi-pi interactions with aromatic anticancer drugs. While caffeine can reduce the toxicity of the anticancer drugs, caffeine can also reduce the efficacy of the anticancer drugs. Aromatic anticancer drugs, such as daunorubicin and irinotecan, work by intercalating into DNA. When caffeine binds to an anticancer drug, the new complex formed cannot easily intercalate into DNA strands. Through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, chemical shift values for pure caffeine, daunorubicin, and irinotecan, as well as, caffeine mixed with daunorubicin and irinotecan were analyzed. Different concentrations for the pure compounds and the mixtures were analyzed by NMR. …

Small Molecule Modulation Of The P75 Neurotrophin Receptor Attenuates Neurodegeneration In An In Vitro Model Of Parkinson’S Disease, Poshan Pokharel
Theses
The p75 Neurotrophin Receptor (p75NTR) is a multifunctional transmembrane protein expressed in distinct regions of the adult nervous system. p75NTR regulates various functions, including neuronal survival or apoptosis interacting with coreceptors Trk receptors or sortilin. Activation of p75NTR occurs through proteolytic processing, and we previously demonstrated that oxidative stress induces activation of p75NTR in LUHMES cells, a neuronal cell line derived from the human ventral mesencephalon. Dopaminergic neurons of the ventral mesencephalon are vulnerable to oxidative stress and neurodegeneration associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Thus, we evaluated the mechanisms behind p75NTR activation and its physiological implications in a PD model. …
