Vascular Adaptations To Single Sprint Training, Matthew Alexander Chatlaong
Vascular Adaptations To Single Sprint Training, Matthew Alexander Chatlaong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Recent sprint interval training studies suggest cardiorespiratory fitness improves after training with 2 x 20s but not 1 x 20s. While insufficient for improving whole-body cardiorespiratory fitness, vascular function or other components of cardiorespiratory fitness may improve. It is unknown if brief intense exercise bouts are sufficient for improvements in these outcomes. This initial exploratory work investigated these outcomes to facilitate future research in this area. Purpose: Investigate changes in micro- and macro-vascular function in young, untrained adults following 4-weeks of single sprint training. Methods: 46 healthy, untrained participants ages 18-35 were allocated to either a training or time-matched …
Polymer Coated Microneedles, A Novel Technology For Drug Delivery And Sampling, Deeksha Jakka
Polymer Coated Microneedles, A Novel Technology For Drug Delivery And Sampling, Deeksha Jakka
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microneedles are used to deliver drugs to the skin and the mucous membrane. Soluble polymers are used to make soluble microneedles; these polymers instantly dissolve in the tissue and release their entire drug load, including the polymer construct. To reduce the severity of side effects at the site of administration and systemic unfavorable effects, it is often better for the drug to release slowly into the tissue. Furthermore, it is safe and effective to release the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) under controlled release, excluding the excipients.
In the first chapter, Polymer-Coated Polymeric (PCP) microneedles were fabricated using PVP K 30 …
Small Organic Molecules Absorbing Low Energy Photons For Dye Sensitized Solar Cells And Biological Imaging, Ravinder Kaur
Small Organic Molecules Absorbing Low Energy Photons For Dye Sensitized Solar Cells And Biological Imaging, Ravinder Kaur
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Small organic molecules with the ability to access photons at longer wavelengths are greatly needed in the fields of dye sensitized solar cells and biological imaging. Firstly, an urgent challenge limiting the improvement in photocurrent of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) technology is the availability of chromophores capable of harvesting the full spectrum of solar irradiation and the judicious employment of these chromophores with other components of the DSC device in order to achieve higher efficiencies. Therefore, strategies are put forward to fabricate and optimize the DSC devices by using novel cross conjugated organic photosensitizers based on benzo[b]thiophene and fused dibenzosilin …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Polyetherimide (PEI) ultrafiltration membranes were created and evaluated for their ability to separate bovine serum albumin (BSA) from water using two fabrication methods: nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) and vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS). In the NIPS method, membranes were made with varying amounts of Pluronic® P-123 and with or without graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The membrane with 1 wt.% Pluronic® P-123 exhibited the best performance, achieving a pure water flux (PWF) of 355 L m-2 h-1 (LMH) and a rejection rate of 90.9%. Adding 1 wt.% GNPs to this system further improved performance, resulting in a PWF of 747 LMH and …
The Effects Of High School Scheduling Models On Student Achievement In Mississippi, Dustin Ryan Payne
The Effects Of High School Scheduling Models On Student Achievement In Mississippi, Dustin Ryan Payne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the effects of different high school scheduling practices on student achievement in Mississippi, considering school economic status as a covariate. Using a robust factorial ANOVA design, the research analyzes reading proficiency, math proficiency, and Mississippi Statewide Accountability System school performance scores across 149 public high schools, excluding those with grades other than 9 through 12, private schools, and charter schools. The primary goal was to determine whether schedule type significantly influences academic performance, independent of economic status. Results indicate that while economic status consistently affects student and school performance, schedule type alone does not show a statistically …

Combatting Suicidality In The Military: Harnessing Forgiveness And Self-Regulation Against The Harrowing Effects Of Moral Injury And Suicidality, Mikaela J. Raley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with military backgrounds are significantly more likely to experience mental health concerns, including suicidal ideation. Moral injury, which is associated with suicidality, is the feeling of shame, grief, and guilt associated with perpetrating, failing to prevent, or witnessing morally transgressive acts. According to the Moral Injury Model, when one acts or witnesses an act that transgresses their moral beliefs, they experience dissonance and internal conflict. A topic that has not yet been studied in terms of moral injury is the positive psychology construct of character strengths, including forgiveness and self-regulation. This study hypothesized ratings of suicide would be positively …
Dunc13 Isoforms, Rim, And Rab3 Differentially Modulate Ethanol Sedation Sensitivity In Drosophila Melanogaster., Gaurav Shrestha
Dunc13 Isoforms, Rim, And Rab3 Differentially Modulate Ethanol Sedation Sensitivity In Drosophila Melanogaster., Gaurav Shrestha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dunc13 is a Drosophila active zone protein homologous to the mammalian Munc13that interacts with RIM and Rab3 as a heterotrimer. Alcohol binds to the C1 domain of Dunc13/Munc13 and inhibits its ability to bind to Diacylglycerol, inhibiting neuronal signaling. The genetic reduction of Dunc13 activity in the Dunc13P84200/+ heterozygotes induces a state in flies that mimics alcohol tolerance, evidenced by increased self-administration, and behavioral, physiological, and molecular resistance. This includes changes in the expression of key synaptic proteins, such as decreased expression of Dunc13 and Syb mRNA, and increased expression of Rim and Rab3 4hrs after ethanol exposure. Dunc13 has …

In their introduction to this edition of Dædalus, Goodwin Liu and Camara Phyllis Jones write that “it is unlikely that implicit bias can be effectively addressed by cognitive interventions alone, without broader institutional, legal, and structural reforms.” They note that the genesis for the volume was a March 2021 workshop on the science of implicit bias convened by the Committee on Science, Technology, and Law of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. That workshop provided an opportunity to demonstrate that implicit bias is a common form of cognitive processing that develops in response to social, cultural, and …

Infant Molds For Cleft Deformities, Hannah Brunow, Drew Reinbolt, Rhonda Troyer, Christian Miller
Infant Molds For Cleft Deformities, Hannah Brunow, Drew Reinbolt, Rhonda Troyer, Christian Miller
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Cleft lip and palate are very common birth defects where the roof of a baby's mouth and lip do not form properly while in the womb. Babies born with cleft lip or palate can undergo surgery after going through a process to make the initial gap smaller through incrementally smaller, retainer-like appliances. We will be trying to find a way to improve the pre-surgery process by implementing 3D printing. We will be performing this research for a craniofacial orthodontist at Akron Children's Hospital. We hope that our success will lead to a decrease in the amount of time spent making …

The effects of caffeine and additives commonly found in energy drinks were tested on crayfish to record changes, if any, in their metabolism. Three experimental groups were studied: 1. Caffeine; 2. Caffeine + Glucuronolactone; 3.) Caffeine + Glucuronolactone + Taurine. Caffeine is a common stimulant used to improve mental awareness, headaches, memory, and athletic performance. Glucuronolactone is connected with cardiovascular issues and aggressive behavior. Taurine is said to improve mood and focus. The experiment was performed at two different caffeine levels: 600mg and 1200mg for an initial 1 hour of exposure and 10 hours after exposure used as a pseudo-baseline. …
Crayfish Tube-Feeding Methodology, Phoenix Johnson
Crayfish Tube-Feeding Methodology, Phoenix Johnson
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The purpose of this paper was to use a tube feeding method on crayfish to expose them to substances through ingestion rather than the gill. This was done to mimic human ingestion of substance to aid in crayfish research involving substances that are normally ingestion. This was done by using a pipette to inject grains of sand into the mouth of the crayfish. To determine if the method worked and successfully went into the stomach the grains of sand were recovered and counted under a microscope after certain increments of time post injection.

Disability Untheorized: Critiques Of Eugenics, Then And Now, Maren Linett
Disability Untheorized: Critiques Of Eugenics, Then And Now, Maren Linett
Department of English Faculty Publications
Critiques of Anglo-American eugenics from the turn of the twentieth century through today demonstrate that the people swept up by the colossal eugenic broom were not biologically “unfit” without questioning either the notion of biological inferiority itself or the “menace” eugenicists saw in disability. They therefore imply that what was wrong with eugenics was its inaccuracy—that it was only ethically problematic because it did not correctly identify “unfit” people. Such critiques, while offering social models of race, poverty, criminality, and/or gender, leave disability untheorized and neglect the rights of disabled people.

Popular Stem Related Career Choices For Middle School Students, Damilola B. Ayokanmi, Paul Asunda
Indiana STEM Education Conference
In order to build and sustain student interest in STEM disciplines, it is important to first ascertain the existing trends in their career choices including factors influencing them. Middle school is a pivotal time for both boys and girls as they start forming identities and career choices and can begin to select both elective courses and extra-curricular activities, based on interests (Webb & Rosson, 2013), and yet, these early years are given low priority in integrated STEM education discussions. This study was guided by the following research question, “What are the popular career choices selected by middle school students …

Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (Cure) In Engineering Technology, Bill Hutzel, Craig Zywicki, Stephanie M. Gardner
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Although most universities provide excellent research experiences for outstanding undergraduate students, the number of interested students typically outstrips the supply of faculty and graduate student mentors. Addressing this shortfall is the reason Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) were created. CUREs face obvious challenges because they operate at a larger scale than the traditional apprentice-based model for undergraduate research, creating resource issues for experimental research that requires equipment, laboratory space, and staff oversight. To help address these hurdles, one university has created a professional development program that provides training, collegial mentoring, and financial support to interested faculty. This paper provides an …
