The shift work schedule is a common work arrangement that can disrupt typical sleep-wake rhythms and lead to negative health consequences. The present study aims to examine the effect of shift work on health-related quality of life (QoL) and explore potential behaviorial mediators (i.e., sleep, eating, exercise, smoking, drinking). A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 4,449 petroleum workers in southwest China. Data on shift work status, health behaviors, and physical and mental health QoL were collected. We tested our model using path analysis and the Monte Carlo approach among 2,129 included participants. After adjusting for covariates, shift work did not …

Exploring The Link Between Self-Image And Eating Disorders In Female Students At Belmont University, Caitlin Rain Roberts

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Introduction: Body image concerns among college students are a significant issue, often contributing to eating disorders as societal pressures intensify during young adulthood (Kapoor, 2022). Self-image influences eating behaviors, psychological perceptions of nutrition, and the development of disordered eating patterns (Kapoor, 2022). Understanding the link between body image and eating disorders is essential for creating effective interventions that support mental and physical well-being during this critical life stage. Methods: This study examined the relationship between body image dissatisfaction and eating disorder behaviors among undergraduate female students at Belmont University in Fall 2024. Using a cross-sectional survey with a mixed-methods approach, …

Unveiling Spanish Language Attitudes In A Los Angeles School And A Third-Generation Multigenerational Mexican-American Family, Eric Alvarez Jan 2024

Unveiling Spanish Language Attitudes In A Los Angeles School And A Third-Generation Multigenerational Mexican-American Family, Eric Alvarez

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

This chapter unearths some of the diverse attitudes towards Spanish of a third-generation child in Los Angeles (L.A.), California, her family members, and school personnel. L.A. is a tension-ridden contact zone (Pratt, 1991) where Spanish has traditionally been subjugated and is still a lesser-taught language (LTL) despite decades of research showing that bilingual education positively impacts student attitudes (Potowski & Muñoz-Basols, 2020). Lack of continuity (Caloi & Torregrossa, 2021) in formal instruction and inconsistent heritage Spanish use in the home may entail divergent attitudes towards Spanish, possibly hindering multigenerational transmission. Decades-long turbulent California language policies (CLP) (Macias, 2001) have consistently …

Efficient High-Resolution Time Series Classification Via Attention Kronecker Decomposition, Aosong Feng, Jialin Chen, Juan Garza, Brooklyn Berry, Francisco Salazar, Yifeng Gao, Rex Ying, Leandros Tassiulas Jan 2024

Efficient High-Resolution Time Series Classification Via Attention Kronecker Decomposition, Aosong Feng, Jialin Chen, Juan Garza, Brooklyn Berry, Francisco Salazar, Yifeng Gao, Rex Ying, Leandros Tassiulas

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The high-resolution time series classification problem is essential due to the increasing availability of detailed temporal data in various domains. To tackle this challenge effectively, it is imperative that the state-of-theart attention model is scalable to accommodate the growing sequence lengths typically encountered in highresolution time series data, while also demonstrating robustness in handling the inherent noise prevalent in such datasets. To address this, we propose to hierarchically encode the long time series into multiple levels based on the interaction ranges. By capturing relationships at different levels, we can build more robust, expressive, and efficient models that are capable of …

Self Pre-Training With Topology- And Spatiality-Aware Masked Autoencoders For 3d Medical Image Segmentation, Pengfei Gu, Yejia Zhang, Huimin Li, Chaoli Wang, Danny Z. Chen Jan 2024

Self Pre-Training With Topology- And Spatiality-Aware Masked Autoencoders For 3d Medical Image Segmentation, Pengfei Gu, Yejia Zhang, Huimin Li, Chaoli Wang, Danny Z. Chen

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Masked Autoencoders (MAEs) have been shown to be effective in pre-training Vision Transformers (ViTs) for natural and medical image analysis problems. By reconstructing missing pixel/voxel information in visible patches, a ViT encoder can aggregate contextual information for downstream tasks. But, existing MAE pre-training methods, which were specifically developed with the ViT architecture, lack the ability to capture geometric shape and spatial information, which is critical for medical image segmentation tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel extension of known MAEs for self pre-training (i.e., models pre-trained on the same target dataset) for 3D medical image segmentation. (1) We propose …

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

The Wnt/β-catenin pathway’s significance in cancer initiation, progression, and stem cell biology underscores its therapeutic potential. However, the clinical application of Wnt inhibitors remains limited due to challenges posed by off-target effects and complex cross-talk of Wnt signaling with other pathways. In this study, we leveraged a zebrafish model to perform a robust and rapid drug screening of 773 FDA-approved compounds to identify Wnt/β-catenin inhibitors with minimal toxicity. Utilizing zebrafish expressing a Wnt reporter, we identified several drugs that suppressed Wnt signaling without compromising zebrafish development. The effi- cacy of the top hit, Erlotinib, extended to human cells, where it …

Creating The New Normal: A Historical Approach To Understanding Marketing Agility And Its Implications Across Business, Healthcare, And Social Welfare In A Post Pandemic World, Elan Burton, Delancy Bennett, Linda Burton

Atlantic Marketing Journal

The purpose of this article is to expand our understanding of how marketing agility shapes business, healthcare, and social welfare policy and societal responses to global pandemics. We set the stage for this discussion by presenting an historical exemplar case of marketing agility during the 1918 Influenza pandemic in the US. Next, we outline a necessary conceptual revision and update to previous treatments of marketing agility relative to historical pandemics considering the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Our novel conceptualization focuses on a firm’s (business, healthcare, social welfare) prompt response to dynamic and turbulent circumstances beyond the control of the firm (Araújo …

The Portrayals Of Trans Athlete Accomplishments In Newspapers, Sierra L. Davidson

Honors College Theses

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between events related to trans athletes and their portrayal in the media. This research project focuses on the accomplishment of one trans athlete, Lia Thomas, winning a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 swimming championship in 2022. Articles from three newspapers of differing biases: The Washington Post, USA Today, and Washington Examiner, and one local newspaper of Thomas’ competing state, Philadelphia Daily News, were used in this analysis. Emerging themes were identified and codes were developed. These recurring themes and codes revealed differences in how newspapers reported on this …

The Effect Of Lighting In Higher Education Classrooms On College Students, Caitlin M. Nelms Jan 2024

The Effect Of Lighting In Higher Education Classrooms On College Students, Caitlin M. Nelms

Honors College Theses

Classroom lighting design is important for student learning outcomes, and can have a negative effect on the physiological states of students. Interior lighting design needs to include appropriate layers of artificial and daylighting. Previous models have shown that artificial lighting can be altered to give off the same effect of natural daylight. Studies have also shown that natural lighting has a positive effect on the productivity of students in a classroom environment. Data was collected by surveying students in a classroom with no natural lighting to see how they felt in the room and if they have any lighting recommendations …

Increase Foster Student Success Through Resource Pedagogy, Madison Nudo Jan 2024

Increase Foster Student Success Through Resource Pedagogy, Madison Nudo

Honors College Theses

The perception of students in foster care is often negative, potentially leading to significant effects on their educational journey. The purpose of the study is to provide accurate and practical solutions to combat the obstacles that may face students in foster care. By conducting interviews with school personnel and related stakeholders, we propose steps to enhance the education of students who have experienced displacement from their birth homes. This includes shifting the perception of these students to a positive and realistic standpoint, using resource pedagogy to bridge the gap between existing perspectives and emerging ones.
