Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera Jan 2024

Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera

World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations

The development of transport systems significantly influences economies, growth, and welfare of populations. However, these systems can have negative consequences, such as water and air pollution, traffic congestion, noise, and biodiversity loss. To address these challenges, it is essential to implement strategies that mitigate negative effects while improving the environmental, social, and economic conditions of the population. In this regard, inland water transport (IWT) is globally recognized as a more sustainable transport alternative due to its high cargo load capacities and comparatively lower environmental and social impacts. In Colombia, the Magdalena River – the country’s most important river basin – …

Gender Representation In Modern Children’S Media: The Disguised Damsel In Distress, Alex Bonham Walsh Jan 2024

Gender Representation In Modern Children’S Media: The Disguised Damsel In Distress, Alex Bonham Walsh

Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize

This paper examines the influence that children’s media has on the formation of gender identity in young children. Through an analysis of the psychology behind children’s formation of gender, coupled with Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity and history acts, this paper delves into the media’s perpetuation of gender roles and highlights the its critical role in providing children with examples about how to consider and embody one’s gender. Children’s media still possesses gender stereotypes and traditional associations, despite modern movies’ attempts to shift away from harmful narratives. Research demonstrates that children absorb these cues, adopting gendered behaviors and societal …

The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq Jan 2024

The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The Supreme Court relies increasingly on anti-classification rules to implement the Constitution’s commands of even-handed state treatment. These rules direct attention to whether an instance of a forbidden classification is present on the face of a challenged law. They contain two necessary steps. First, a court defines a general category of impermissible terms. Second, a court ascertains whether an instance of the category is found in enacted text—triggering the familiar strict scrutiny analysis. So defined, anti-classification rules now dominate Equal Protection, Free Speech, ‘dormant’ Commerce Clause, and even Free Exercise jurisprudence. The Roberts Court celebrates them as “commonsense,” citing their …

Skin Reaction Diagnosis In Breast Radiotherapy, Rebecca Lynn Culcasi Jan 2024

Skin Reaction Diagnosis In Breast Radiotherapy, Rebecca Lynn Culcasi

Wayne State University Dissertations

Radiotherapy plays an essential role in post-operative management of breast cancer. Unfortunately, the doses required to eradicate malignant tissue also cause radiation-induced skin damage. The more severe effects often require treatment postponement or cessation, which can impact the probability of local control and lasting negative effects.Acute skin reactions are subjectively evaluated by the clinician according to NCI’s CTC or RTOG scoring systems. The criteria for acute radiation morbidity ranges from grade 1 to 4 for adverse advents. The onset of symptoms typically occurs approximately two weeks into treatment and is dose dependent. Given radiation-induced skin injury remains a dose limiting …

Redcedar Expansion, Cottonwood Dieback, And Birds Along The Missouri National Recreational River, Nadeesha Dilrukshi Illeperuma Arachchige Done

Dissertations and Theses

Dam construction, flow regulation, and reduced peak flows along the Missouri River have altered fluvial geomorphic processes, leading to a decline in suitable environments for cottonwood regeneration and increased opportunities for recruitment and survival of invasive woody species like eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana). Additionally, environmental changes and anthropogenic activities that disrupt the shallow groundwater table essential for cottonwood's growth, such as water diversion, groundwater pumping, channel incision, and severe drought affect the health of existing cottonwood forests. The establishment of eastern redcedar, a native upland species, in the floodplain further threatens cottonwood forest health by intensifying competition for water and …

The Dating Experiences Of Black Women, Sarah Ish Jan 2024

The Dating Experiences Of Black Women, Sarah Ish

Women's and Gender Studies Theses

My thesis centers around Black women’s dating and hookup experiences at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). I distributed a survey with 44 questions; five demographic questions and eight factors that include questions revolving around being romantically and/or sexually rejected based on their race/ethnicity. After three weeks of collecting data, my research has revealed patterns involving negative attitudes towards dating apps, admissions of hopelessness in finding an intimate partner, being fetishized by white people, and feelings of betrayal when/if a person of color expressed rejection based on their race/ethnicity. The implementation of feminist theory and feminist scholars such as Audre Lorde, Patricia …

Skinny Labels: Changing Scenario Of Induced Infringement And Public Policy, Sandhu, Amit Dhillon Jan 2024

Skinny Labels: Changing Scenario Of Induced Infringement And Public Policy, Sandhu, Amit Dhillon

Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal

A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention to the inventor. However, when it comes to life-sustaining products, these exclusive rights have a negative impact on people’s lives. The government has tried to develop initiatives, such as the Hatch-Waxman Act, to compensate and speed up the entry of affordable medicines into the market. But when one patent addressing one medical condition (indication) blocks the entry of the generic, the use of skinny labels makes it possible for the generic players to carve out the label and enter the market only with indications that are off-patent. This helps bring …

Estradiol Signaling Improves Extinction Memory Recall To Combat Cue-Induced Heroin Relapse In Rats, Jordan S. Carter Jan 2024

Estradiol Signaling Improves Extinction Memory Recall To Combat Cue-Induced Heroin Relapse In Rats, Jordan S. Carter

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

We are in the midst of an opioid use disorder (OUD) epidemic. While several treatments mitigate a range of factors contributing to return to use, or relapse, the power of drug-conditioned environmental cues to precipitate relapse have not been adequately addressed. One treatment modality targeting cue reactivity, cue exposure therapy (CET), exacerbated relapse in individuals with OUD, perhaps due to a deficit in extinction memory recall (EMR). Here, EMR is the ability to override the drug-cue association and prevent relapse. Interest remains in combatting cue-induced relapse, potentially by introducing a pharmacologic adjunct with CET to enhance EMR. In the following …

The Impact Of Parent-Child Interactions On Emotion Regulation In Adulthood, Bridget Burgoyne, Holly Grant-Marsney

Modern Psychological Studies

Childhood is a time where emotional skills are formed. These skills often reflect the primary caregiver(s) modeling and interactions which may shape emotional intelligence. This research aimed to assess if specific parenting approaches have lasting effects on a person’s ability to emotionally regulate. The sample included 141 adults, who responded to questions reflecting the parenting approaches they observed, and their current state of emotional regulation. Results from our regression analysis showed when controlling for age, parental warmth in childhood predicted one’s later ability to use cognitive reappraisal skills. Results from our correlational analysis showed strong positive associations between overindulgence, cognitive …

Motivated Gifts: A Self-Determination Perspective, Sharise Love, Liudmila Titova Jan 2024

Motivated Gifts: A Self-Determination Perspective, Sharise Love, Liudmila Titova

Modern Psychological Studies

Gift-giving can strengthen relationships and facilitate favor requests. Previous researchers have found that 'motivated gifts' (gifts given with the intention of asking a favor) decrease recipients' satisfaction and willingness to help. The current study investigated the role of basic psychological need satisfaction (BPNS) in this effect. BPNS is said to facilitate the integration of autonomous motivation, which was hypothesized to mediate the relationship between motivated gifts and prosociality. In the current study, a sample of 426 undergraduate students was randomly given a hypothetical scenario in which they imagined receiving a motivated gift or not, while also being asked a favor. …

Data From: Phylogenomic Species Delimitation Of Studfishes (Fundulidae: Fundulus): Evidence For Cryptic Species In Agreement With The Central Highlands Vicariance Hypothesis, Kayla M. Fast, Peter J. Hundt, Zachariah D. Alley, Michael W. Sandel

CFR Publications

The Central Highlands ecoregion of the eastern United States represents a hotspot of freshwater biodiversity, with replicated patterns of vicariant speciation east and west of the Mississippi River. Previous phylogeographic investigation of the studfishes (Fundulus subgenus Fundulus) revealed evidence for vicariant speciation in the Central Highlands, but data were limited to a small number of gene sequences generated with Sanger sequencing. We used double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) to improve resolution of phylogeographic patterns and better characterize population genetic variation. Our sample design included individuals from the Fundulus catenatus species group (F. catenatus, F. bifax, …

Assessment Of Recycled And Manufactured Adsorptive Materials For Phosphate Removal From Municipal Wastewater, Deja Drummond, Shannon Brink, Natasha Bell

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Elevated concentrations of phosphorus (P) and other nutrients common in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent have been shown to contribute to the proliferation of harmful algal blooms, which may lead to fish kills related to aquatic hypoxia. Increased understanding of the negative effects associated with elevated P concentrations have prompted more strict regulation of WWTP effluent in recent years. The use of low-cost and potentially regenerative adsorptive phosphate filters has the potential to decrease P concentrations in WWTP effluent released to natural waters. This research focuses on assessing the capacities of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), expanded slate, and expanded clay …
