The Critically Endangered white-bellied heron Ardea insignis is a large-bodied, range-restricted, piscivorous bird of the Himalayan mountains. With fewer than 60 individuals remaining globally, regular monitoring is required for this rare species. We present the results of surveys during 2017 and 2023-2024 in Namdapha Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh, India. The encounter rate of white-bellied herons in 2017 was 0.55 individuals per km of river, but we did not detect the bird during intensive surveys in the same location during 2023-2024. The surveyed area within the Reserve was once a stronghold for the species, but its population appears to be declining. …

Immune privilege is the ability to tolerate foreign antigens without eliciting an inflammatory immune response. Several mechanisms explain a structure's immune privilege status, which is regulated by innate and adaptive immune responses. The role of myofibroblasts in perpetuating fibrosis by acquiring an immune privileged phenotype against the backdrop of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is evolving. Myofibroblasts persist through the Fas/FasL autocrine pathway and induce apoptosis in epithelial cells, explaining the juxtaposition of apoptotic cells in areas of fibrosis. However, increased matrix stiffness, in addition to activating TGF-β, reduces Fas surface expression in myofibroblasts, increasing their resistance to apoptosis. The reciprocal …

A Novel Statistical Approach To Obtain The Best Visibility Slice In Mri Sequence Of Brain Tumors, Hassan Al-Yassin, Mohammed A. Fadhel, Omran Al-Shamma
Baghdad Science Journal
Early diagnosis of brain tumor enhances the possibility of patients being cured. With the progress of the use of artificial intelligence in the medical field, the detection of brain tumors has become one of the researchers’ interests. Obtaining which slice in the MRI sequence gives the best visibility of the tumor is still a challenge. This paper introduced a novel statistical approach to extracting the tumor from the patient's MRI scan (sequence). Initially, the probability mass function (PMF) was computed for each image in the sequence. Then, the Kullback-Leibler divergence technique was applied to determine the tumor image(s) that diverged …

The Seaport Platform of Environmental Surveillance (PPSE, or Plateforme Portuaire de Surveillance Environnementale in French) was officially inaugurated in Cotonou Seaport (CS), Benin, by the end of 2021. To our knowledge, this platform is the first laboratory dedicated to the monitoring and management of invasive species to be built inside the walls of an African seaport. Its creation has benefitted from a combination of favorable factors, and its existence has resulted from a long-term, multi-stakeholder and still ongoing process that we here describe and analyze. We believe that the PPSE is an innovative science-guided operational initiative that may be useful …

Investigating Social-Ecological Linkages In Baltimore, Md: Environmental Stewardship, Green Stormwater Infrastructure, And Tree Canopy Change At The Neighborhood Level, Sarah Ponte, Nancy F. Sonti, Dexter H. Locke, Jennifer Mullinax, Mitchell Pavao-Zuckerman
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Environmental stewardship organizations in Baltimore play important roles in taking care of the local environment through conservation, management, restoration, monitoring, education, and other efforts. These diverse activities were captured in Baltimore’s Stewardship Mapping and Assessment Project (STEW-MAP) surveys in 2011 and 2019. Despite previous research, knowledge gaps remain about the spatial and temporal dynamics of environmental stewardship groups and their relationships with elements of the built environment, such as green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) and tree canopy cover. Using spatial Bayesian regression, we examine how 1) voluntary GSI, 2) regulatory GSI, 3) tree canopy cover, and 4) tree canopy cover change …
The Danger Of Silence: The Negative Effect Of Supreme Court Hesitance To Establish A Bright-Line Rule For Determining Patent Subject Matter Eligibility, Amber N. Roibu
Touro Law Review
Ambiguity surrounding the interpretation of 35 U.S.C. § 101 and the ultimate application of the Alice/Mayo standard for determining patent subject matter eligibility has long plagued the courts, practitioners, and USPTO examiners alike. Maintaining a standard that leads to sheer confusion and, as a result, inconsistent rulings severely muddles the ultimate goal of patent law, to promote innovation. The Supreme Court has been presented with ample opportunities to address these issues, with the Solicitor General consistently recommending that it hear cases that deal with patent-eligibility debates. Nonetheless, the Supreme Court's continued hesitancy to grant certiorari on these cases only further …

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications
The opportunistic pathogen Enterococcus faecium colonizes humans and a wide range of animals, endures numerous stresses, resists antibiotic treatment and stubbornly persists in clinical environments. The widespread application of antibiotics in hospitals and agriculture has contributed to the emergence of vancomycin-resistant E. faecium, which causes many hospital-acquired infections. In this Review, we explore recent discoveries about the evolutionary history, the environmental adaptation and the colonization and dissemination mechanisms of E. faecium and vancomycin-resistant E. faecium. These studies provide critical insights necessary for developing novel preventive and therapeutic approaches against vancomycin-resistant E. faecium and also reveal the intricate interrelationships …

A Neutrosophic Framework For Artificial Immune Systems, Antonios Paraskevas, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Artificial immune systems (AIS) draw inspiration from the mechanisms of the natural immune system. They extract ideas from the functioning of the natural immune system in order to use them to build computer models to solve real-world problems. While traditional AIS models mimic the biological immune system’s capacity to distinguish between self and non-self entities, they often face challenges in environments where data may be incomplete or ambiguous. In this paper we introduce neutrosophic AIS that includes degrees of truthiness, falsehood and indeterminacy to better address ambiguity within pattern recognition tasks. Within this neutrosophic framework we discuss and redefine main …

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Foliar fungal diseases and Fusarium head blight (FHB) are among the major causes of significant yield losses in wheat production, particularly in Nebraska. Resistant cultivars and fungicide applications are common management strategies, but the overuse of fungicides has raised concerns about resistance in Fusarium graminearum populations in Nebraska. This study evaluated the effects of cultivar resistance, fungicide timing and their economic benefits. It also assessed the sensitivity of Nebraska isolates of F. graminearum and F. boothii to a triazole fungicide. In 2022 and 2024, 14 fungicide treatments and a control were arranged in a split-plot experimental design with …

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Artificial superlattices composed of perovskite oxides serves as an essential platform for engineering coherent phonon transport by redefining the lattice periodicity, which strongly influences the lattice-coupled phase transitions in charge and spin degrees of freedom. However, previous methods of manipulating phonons have been limited to controlling the periodicity of superlattice, rather than utilizing complex mutual interactions that are prominent in transition metal oxides. In this study on oxide superlattices composed of ferromagnetic metallic SrRuO3 and quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 , phonon modulation by controlling the geometry of superlattice in atomic-scale precision is realized, demonstrating the coherent phonon engineering using structural and …

What Drives Gut Microbial Diversity And Community Structure Among Closely-Related Host Species?, Rylee Jensen
All NMU Master's Theses
The gut microbiome (GMB) of mammals hosts an important community of microbes that perform countless micro-ecosystem services for the host and are influenced by numerous factors including host physiology, environment, and phylogeny. Phylogeny may have a unique effect on GMB diversity and community structure (i.e., a GMB profile) via phylosymbiosis, a theory in which the evolution of hosts matches the evolution of their associated microbiota. Elucidating phylosymbiosis in mammals is difficult because multiple intrinsic and extrinsic factors collectively drive individual GMB variation. Thus, there is a need to simultaneously analyze the role of physiology, environment, and phylogeny on shaping host …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Next Round Brewing project was a project that sought to use treated wastewater to make potable drinking water using peracetic acid (PAA) and the advanced oxidation process and break the stigma around reclaimed water. In experiments, PAA was an efficient biocide which reduced the level of pathogens to within EPA standards. When PAA was coupled with the advanced oxidation process all organic matter was also reduced to within acceptable levels, and no biocide was left over in the final product, meaning PAA properly dissociated into harmless byproducts. A series of experiments are presented that vary concentrations of PAA, effluent …

Currently, cryovials on dry ice or liquid nitrogen vapor transportation vessels are primary ways utilized to transport mammalian cells from one location to another. Due to the safety concerns of dry ice and liquid nitrogen, associated costly shipping charges, and limitations of proper packaging and labeling of materials, these conventional shipping techniques are unacceptable. It is urgent to develop a safe and environmentally friendly protocol to preserve and ship the biological samples from one place to another. In this research, a method was developed for an ecofriendly and safe protocol to preserve cancer cells. The cell viability of cell line …

Biosecurity factsheets
This factsheet outlines the use of fencing to protect crops and pasture from rabbits.
Rabbits cause an estimated loss of $217 million each year to Australian agricultural production and cause significant environmental damage. In Western Australia (WA), areas of native vegetation, particularly on sandy ridges that would otherwise be subject to wind erosion, have been retained on farms. Bush remnants are a major refuge habitat for rabbits, which can cause considerable damage to nearby pastures and crops. A measure of rabbit control can be achieved by poisoning around bush remnants in late summer or autumn, prior to seeding. To be …
