Comparison Of Soil Organic Matter Fractions In Non-Grazed And Prescribed Sheep-Grazed Managed Land In Southwest Michigan, Julia M. Shreve, Katelyn Smith, Lauren Burns
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
The impact of prescribed sheep grazing on soil organic carbon (SOC) was investigated by comparing a 2-acre grazed and a 2-acre non-grazed (control) portion of redeveloped land previously seeded with pasture mix in Southwest Michigan. This study aimed to measure changes in SOC resulting from prescribed sheep grazing by examining two key soil organic matter (SOM) fractions: particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) along with soil physical and chemical properties (e.g., bulk density, infiltration rate, moisture content, pH, conductivity). Soil cores were collected from 5 locations within each of the 2-acre plots using a diagonal random sampling …

In this modern age of electronic interactions, more secure methods are required to protect vital information. Passwords are indeed a prominent and secure method, but they are subject to being forgotten, especially if they are long and complex. A more efficient way is the use of human fingerprints, which are unique to each person. No two people would have the same fingerprint even if they were a twin, which makes it a very secure method that cannot be duplicated or forgotten. This research aims to compare seven moments and backpropagation for more accurate fingerprint recognition within video frames. The first …

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is highly prevalent, accounting for approximately one-tenth of cancer cases and deaths globally. It stands as the second most deadly and third most common cancer type. Although the gut microbiota has been implicated in CRC carcinogenesis for the last several decades, it remains one of the least understood risk factors for CRC development, as the gut microbiota is highly diverse and variable. Many studies have uncovered unique microbial signatures in CRC patients compared with healthy matched controls, with variations dependent on patient age, disease stage, and location. In addition, mechanistic studies revealed that tumor-associated bacteria produce diverse …

Deoxycholic Acid Injections As A Nonsurgical Treatment For Lipomas In Adiposis Dolorosa (Dercum Disease), Zvi Schwartz, Kayla Brockmeyer, Neda Nikbakht
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Adiposis dolorosa (Dercum disease) is a rare condition characterized by diffuse and recurring painful lipomas on the trunk and extremities. Patients are typically middle-aged females with an elevated BMI presenting with chronic pain. Physical examination reveals soft subcutaneous nodules and masses, tender to palpation. The associated pain significantly impacts quality of life and requires therapeutic intervention. The most common treatment option is surgical excision. Alternative options should be considered for patients with numerous lipomas where surgical management is not practical or is not desired. Deoxycholic acid injections are a viable alternative non-surgical technique. We present a case of a 55-year-old …

Too Much Democracy? Exploring The Link Between Majoritarian Institutions And Disparities In The American States, Julianna Pacheco, Scott Lacombe
Too Much Democracy? Exploring The Link Between Majoritarian Institutions And Disparities In The American States, Julianna Pacheco, Scott Lacombe
Government: Faculty Publications
In the field of American state politics, the tension between majoritarian institutions and equality has largely been ignored. Do state institutions that empower majority preferences exacerbate disparities in social outcomes? Under what conditions do majoritarian institutions exacerbate inequalities in the American states? Our argument is that equality is most likely to be threatened under majoritarian institutions when (1) there are systemic participatory biases and/or (2) there are widespread prejudices about particular groups in society. We find that more majoritarian institutions are associated with larger disparities between White and Black life expectancy and poverty rates across the American states, but not …

Staggering Stink Bugs: Autotomy Affects Stability And Locomotor Performance In Halymorpha Halys, Lilian Jubb
Longwood Senior Theses
Autotomy, the voluntary loss of a limb, is a common predator evasion strategy in arthropods. Considerable research on autotomy has focused on arachnids, which have developed morphological compensations to manage the stability challenges posed by limb loss, as explained by the extra leg hypothesis. However, studies in insects are unclear about such a mechanism. In hexapods, a tripod gait means that losing any one limb disrupts one of the tripod stances. It is not fully understood how insects compensate for the resulting loss of stability and potential performance effects. We hypothesize that insects exhibit neural plasticity, allowing them to adjust …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
The surface protein hemagglutinin (HA) of the influenza virus plays a pivotal role in facilitating viral infection by binding to sialic acid receptors on host cells. Its conformational state is pH-sensitive, impacting its receptor-binding ability and evasion of the host immune response. In this study, we conducted extensive equilibrium microsecond-level all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the HA protein to explore the influence of low pH on its conformational dynamics. Specifically, we investigated the impact of protonation on conserved histidine residues (H1062) located in the hinge region of HA2. Our analysis encompassed comparisons between nonprotonated (NP), partially protonated …

The translation of pre-clinical anti-cancer therapies to regulatory approval has been promising, but slower than hoped. While innovative and effective treatments continue to achieve or seek approval, setbacks are often attributed to a lack of efficacy, failure to achieve clinical endpoints, and dose-limiting toxicities. Successful efforts have been characterized by the development of therapeutics designed to specifically deliver optimal and effective dosing to tumour cells while minimizing off-target toxicity. Much effort has been devoted to the rational design and application of synthetic nanoparticles to serve as targeted therapeutic delivery vehicles. Several challenges to the successful application of this modality as …
