Human wildlife interactions (HWI) pose a complex challenge for wildlife managers. Human encroachment into wildlife habitat and the growing number of outdoor recreationists are increasing the frequency of contact and conflict, especially in regions such as the Front Range of Colorado. Geographic information systems (GIS), which use a combination of remote sensing and environmental survey data, allow for predictive spatial analyses of where human wildlife interactions are likely to occur. I used publicly reported observations of moose to create spatial predictive maps in a species distribution model framework. Slope and elevation were shown to be the strongest predictors of HWI, …

The extraction and changes to management of natural resources can have profound negative effects on local fauna, potentially causing local extirpation of many species. Fauna requiring specific habitats to thrive can be especially susceptible to disruption, such as Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), requiring advanced consideration in management practices. In this study, I studied Bald eagle preferences in roosting sites between trees and ice, and how life stage may affect roosting height within three vertical sections of the canopy at Barr Lake State Park, in Brighton, CO. I conducted stationary counts of Bald Eagles roosting on ice and in …

Evaluating The Repellent Properties Of Paprika On Ants, Jonathan J. Toj Castellanos
2024 REYES Proceedings
Ants are a problem no matter where you are, which is why we should always have a way to repel them on hand. Spices can be an eco-friendly and cheaper alternative to common insecticides sold in supermarkets. These insecticides are generally made from toxic products, which can affect both humans and animals. This research aimed to find the perfect spice to replace insecticides. Paprika was chosen because it is very common, especially in Guatemalan territory. Several experiments were conducted to verify the effects of paprika on ants. It was tested on one of the most common ant species in Central …

2024 REYES Proceedings
Ants, while beneficial in natural ecosystems, can become pests when they invade human habitats. This study explored the potential of common household spices as a non-toxic alternative to chemical pesticides for ant repellency. Experiments were conducted using powdered ginger and crushed cardamom, which were applied to sugar biscuits (bait) in two ways: sprinkled on top and arranged in a circle around the bait. Ant activity was monitored over time, and data was analyzed using the Sign Test. The results indicated that both ginger and cardamom significantly repelled ants, demonstrating their effectiveness as natural ant deterrents. These findings suggest that spices …

Codifying Prior Informed Consent To Govern Unregistered Pesticide Export, William Snape Iii
Codifying Prior Informed Consent To Govern Unregistered Pesticide Export, William Snape Iii
PEEL Faculty Scholarship
Despite binding international law and congressional authority to the contrary, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to allow U.S. chemical manufacturers to export dangerous and unregistered pesticides to poorer countries through a regulatory loophole that must close. EPA should immediately initiate rule making to require “prior informed consent” (PIC) for the export of pesticides unregistered in the United States under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). PIC is a widely accepted legal concept defined by U.S. domestic statutes and multilateral treaties and agreements.

The Influence Of Abiotic Stress And Cultivar Variation On Plant Defenses And Resistance To Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus Planipennis) In Cultivated Olive (Olea Spp), Idris B. Elesin
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis, is an invasive pest that significantly impacts olive trees (Olea europaea). This study aimed to assess the role of abiotic stress factors such as drought and salinity in influencing plant defenses and resistance to EAB, while also examining cultivar variation in resistance. The study specifically aimed to address: (1) What effects do varying degrees of abiotic stress (drought, salinity) have on olive trees' antioxidant and peroxidase activity in olive tree? (2) Do distinct olive cultivars exhibit varying levels of resistance to EAB under various stressors? We used a controlled experimental design with two stress …

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have increasingly gained popularity as tools for analyzing graph data in areas like biology, knowledge-graphs, social networks, biology, and recommendation systems. However, their vulnerability to adversarial attacks - small, targeted manipulations of graph structures or node features - raises serious concerns about their reliability in real-world applications. Existing defense strategies, such as adversarial training, edge filtering, low-rank approximations, and randomization-based methods, often suffer from high computational costs, scalability issues, or reduced clean-data performance. Unlike these methods, the proposed approach integrates multi-hop relationships, applies adaptive regularization, and maintains a balance between feature-based and structural embeddings, ensuring improved …

Adsorption Of Perfluoroalkyl Substances With Activated Carbon: Characterizing Non-Hazardous Simulants, Jennifer Hensley
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are of great interest recently because some members of this class exhibit human health risks at extremely low levels, making them the current subject of proposed regulation and policy. Treatment of PFAS contaminated wastewater often is performed through adsorptive processes, e.g., with activated carbon. Due to complexities with PFAS laboratory analysis, assessing treatment efficacy through direct measurement of PFAS is expensive and time consuming, potentially delaying the design and implementation of site-specific treatment systems. This project identified and characterized potential suitable simulants for PFAS during wastewater treatment for which analysis can be timely and economical. …

Eukaryotic SSB, also known as replication protein A (RPA), is a single-stranded DNA binding protein that is highly conserved in eukaryotes. It is essential in multiple cellular functions such as DNA replication, repair, recombination, and cell cycle checkpoint signaling. Studying SSB’s or RPA’s checkpoint functions in cells is challenging due to its crucial role in cell survival. Exploring this possibility, we performed an extensive genetic screening of ssb1, which encodes the largest subunit of RPA, looking for nonlethal mutants that lack the checkpoint function. This screen has identified 25 primary mutants that are sensitive to genotoxins namely HU and MMS. …

The changes in splicing of MDM4 in human melanomagenesis are critical to p53 activity and represent potential therapeutic targets. Genomic characteristics of melanoma and precursor lesions, such as copy number variation and gene expression, have been investigated in detail. However, there has never been a detailed survey of splicing changes that occur during melanomagenesis. Splicing changes can be a very early event in melanoma tumor progression, with characteristic changes in the p53 pathway already in place in early nevi. MDM4 is upregulated in a strong majority of melanoma cases and has been described as a “key therapeutic target in cutaneous …
