A Qualitative Inquiry To The Impact Of Peer Teaching On Undergraduate Chemistry Students, Marcus Sambar
A Qualitative Inquiry To The Impact Of Peer Teaching On Undergraduate Chemistry Students, Marcus Sambar
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the impact of peer teaching on undergraduate STEM majors, particularly those who serve as peer teachers for introductory chemistry courses. While previous research has predominantly focused on the benefits of peer tutoring for the tutored students, the reciprocal impact on peer teachers remains underexplored. The main purpose of this study is to quantify the differences between peer teachers and comparable students who do not engage in teaching, with a specific focus on problem-solving approaches and the ability to explain STEM concepts. The assessment included coding students' work to reveal strategy use and provide a means of comparison …

During weeks 1-6, the treatment group received the MRP …
Epigenetics And Character Virtue Development, David S. Moore
Epigenetics And Character Virtue Development, David S. Moore
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Current understandings of epigenetics offer some insights into the developmental origins of character virtues. Research on epigenetics has demonstrated that phenotypes depend on both genomic and non-genomic information for their development, and such is true for the development of character virtues as well. This conclusion offers significant support for the Developmental Systems perspective. Although researchers have not yet studied the role of molecular epigenetic factors in the development of character, the field of behavioral epigenetics has revealed how such factors contribute to psychological and other behavioral phenotypes in general. In particular, behavioral epigenetics research can highlight the plasticity of human …

The Perception Of Asian Students Enrolled In An Online Theological Degree Program On Their Learning Experience Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kelvin Kian Teck Teo
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of Asian theological students as they transitioned from face-to-face to online learning while enrolled in an onsite theological degree program amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Like all other institutions, theological schools had to move their faculty and students to remote online learning rapidly in response to the safe-distancing and lockdown measures introduced by government across the world to manage the pandemic. In that way, the pandemic brought about the first online experience for many teachers and students in theological studies in Asia. While this remote online learning was …

Dual Gallium Drug Treatment Against Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella Pneumoniae: Efficacy And Potential Mechanism(S) Of Action And Resistance, Zachary Scott, Seoung-Ryoung Choi, Bradley E. Britigan, Prabagaran Narayanasamy
Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology
Klebsiella pneumoniae (KLP) is a Gram-negative pathogen that can be highly antibiotic-resistant. Our group has worked with gallium-based compounds as a means of treating bacterial infections. Here the possible mechanism is investigated for dual therapy comprised of gallium nitrate (Ga(NO3)3) and gallium protoporphyrin (GaPP) on KLP. It is found that in vitro the combination of Ga(NO3)3 and GaPP is synergistic against KLP. The in vivo efficacy is of the dual therapy is additionally tested by treating pulmonary KLP infections in mice. Much greater effectiveness are observed in bacterial clearance and survival of mice …

The Periodontal Puzzle: Piecing Together The Lupus Connection With Oral Health, Paige Carpenter, Carrie Grace, Tasia Halliday
The Periodontal Puzzle: Piecing Together The Lupus Connection With Oral Health, Paige Carpenter, Carrie Grace, Tasia Halliday
Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters
The connection of periodontal disease and systemic erythematous lupus connects a multitude of inflammation symptoms. The body is plagued with consistent states of inflammation due to the autoimmune defense against the body's healthy tissues. This coincides with the inflammatory response produced by periodontal diseases. Studies indicate a strong correlation between the presence of periodontal disease in individuals suffering from SLE. Those with lupus are more likely to also have a greater incidence of oral characteristics that contribute to periodontal disease. Individuals with SLE have an increased risk of developing periodontal diseases and associated characteristics; however, those suffering from said oral …

Small Airway-On-A-Chip Enables Analysis Of Human Lung Inflammation And Drug Responses In Vitro, Christina A. Fernandez
VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals
This presentation focuses on the development of the Small Airway-on-a-Chip, a microfluidic device meant to serve as a more accurate, human-relevant research model for lung inflammation-focused pharmaceutical testing, as described in Small Airway-on-a-Chip Enables Analysis of Human Lung Inflammation and Drug Responses in Vitro by Benam et al. Currently, there is no way to study organ-level complexities of human lung inflammation outside of the clinical setting. However, the human lung Small Airway-on-a-Chip demonstrated the ability to reconstitute a functional unit of the lung as well as model asthma, lung inflammation, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), suggesting that the device …

2024 Faculty Bibliography
Two new species of Dulcicalothrix, D.adhikaryi sp. nov. and D.iyengarii sp. nov., were discovered in India and are characterized and described in accord- ance with the rules of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN). As a result of phylogenetic analysis, Calothrix elsteri is reas- signed to Brunnivagina gen. nov. During comparison with all Dulcicalothrix for which sequence data were available, we observed that the genus has six ribosomal operons in three orthologous types. Each of the three orthologs could be identified based upon indels occurring in the D1–D1′ helix sequence in the ITS rRNA region …

2024 Faculty Bibliography
Studies performed in North America, Africa, and South America have led to the isolation of four new species of Kastovskya, a filamentous cyanobacterial genus that before this manuscript had only one species, Kastovskya adunca from Chile. Kastovskya nitens and K. viridissima were isolated from soils on San Nicolas Island, K. sahariensis was isolated from hypolithic habitats from the Sahara Desert in Algeria, and K. circularithylacoides was isolated from hypolithic habitats in Chile. The molecular analyses are corroborated by morphological data, morphometric analysis, and ecological and biogeographical considerations for robust polyphasic descriptions of all taxa. The peculiar transatlantic distribution of this …

Conclusion
Parents do not suddenly relinquish medical decision-making to their children and are a vital part of a process construed within the framework of consent and confidentiality laws. In the transition period from childhood to adulthood, adolescents develop unique healthcare needs and concerns at the very time they are gaining autonomy from their parents. Adolescents progress from being recipients of decisions about their care to gradually becoming active participants in their healthcare and emerge as a primary partner in medical decision-making. Building a strong therapeutic alliance with young people can help them become responsible healthcare decision-makers.
Yet while “healthcare,” including …

Background
Growing interest has motivated recent studies to examine differences in recovery after sportrelated concussion (SRC) by sex. However, heterogeneity in study design, participants, and recovery outcomes has led to mixed findings. Further work is needed to evaluate potential differences by sex and to investigate the role of related characteristics, such as sport contact-level, in recovery timelines. This study aimed to investigate whether concussion recovery trajectories differ by sex, considering a priori clinical and demographic covariates, and accounting for the sequence of recovery outcomes. Our secondary question was whether sport contact-level modifies the relationship between sex and time to outcomes. …

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the potential of using thermophilic aerobic digestion (TAD) to hydrolyze aquaculture sludge, and to investigate the hydrolysis efficiency and changes in microbial community structure during TAD at 0, 15, and 30 practical salinity units (psu). As digestion progressed, soluble organic matter concentrations in all reactors increased to their maximum values at 6 h. The hydrolysis efficiency at 6 h decreased as salinity increased: 2.42% at 0 psu, 1.78% at 15 psu, and 1.04% at 30 psu. The microbial community compositions at the genus level prominently differed in the relative abundances of dominant …

BACKGROUND: The optimal dosing strategy for rifampicin in treating drug-susceptible tuberculosis (TB) is still highly debated. In the phase 3 clinical trial Study 31/ACTG 5349 (NCT02410772), all participants in the control regimen arm received 600 mg rifampicin daily as a flat dose. Here, we evaluated relationships between rifampicin exposure and efficacy and safety outcomes.
METHODS: We analyzed rifampicin concentration time profiles using population nonlinear mixed-effects models. We compared simulated rifampicin exposure from flat- and weight-banded dosing. We evaluated the effect of rifampicin exposure on stable culture conversion at 6 months; TB-related unfavorable outcomes at 9, 12, and 18 months using …
