Spatial Variation In Mercury Contamination In Freshwater Fish Species Across Rhode Island, David L. Taylor, Brianna Lotti, Jonathan Serbst, Jim Lake, Alan Libby, Mariel Sorlien
Student Research Symposium
Fish provide essential nutrients and proteins beneficial to human health, yet may pose certain risks due to contaminants in edible tissues. For example, mercury (Hg) is a widespread toxicant that bioaccumulates in fish muscle (filet) tissue. Accordingly, federal and state government agencies issue consumption advisories to minimize diet related Hg exposure. Fish consumption advisories, however, often fail to account for small-scale spatial variations in Hg contamination, especially in freshwater fishes. This study examined site-specific Hg concentrations in bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), pumpkinseed sunfish (L. gibbosus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), chain pickerel (Esox niger), and yellow perch (Perca flavescens), all of …

Maternal Mercury Transfer From Pregnant Spiny (Squalus Acanthias) And Smooth (Mustelus Canis) Dogfish To Their Pups Through Differing Reproductive Strategies, David L. Taylor, Maxwell Ajemian, Abrielle Remick
Student Research Symposium
Mercury (Hg) is a bioaccumulative contaminant that can be transferred from pregnant females to developing embryos (i.e., intrauterine maternal Hg transfer); thus, leading to health deficits in offspring. This study examined Hg transfer in the ovoviviparous spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) and viviparous smooth dogfish (Mustelus canis). Female dogfish were collected from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island Sound, and Block Island Sound via rod & reel, gillnet, and trawling. In the laboratory, intrauterine pups were excised from pregnant dogfish, after which samples of mother and pup muscle tissue were analyzed for total Hg concentrations ([Hg] in ppm dry weight) using automated atomic-absorption …
Compassion Fatigue In School Principals As A Contributing Factor To School Principal Burnout, Donald D. Howard, Jr.
Compassion Fatigue In School Principals As A Contributing Factor To School Principal Burnout, Donald D. Howard, Jr.
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In recent years, within the United States and globally, workforce members who directly and tangentially treat and serve traumatized individuals have begun to experience an additional occupational hazard in the form of compassion fatigue.
Consistent school leadership can be a critical factor in increased student achievement and school-based performance outcomes. However, the principalship has become more physically and emotionally taxing due to increasing demands, duties, and expectations. Principal burnout has become a critical factor that has escalated principal turnover, often destabilizing a school community (Buckman, 2021). While many individual and organizational factors contribute to principal burnout but remain relatively unexamined, …

Chemotherapy poses a significant challenge for cancer patients due to drug-associated toxicity, which often results from their effects on both healthy (normal) and cancerous cells. While various options aim to reduce toxicity and optimize beneficial effects, a comprehensive solution remains elusive. Cyclotherapy is one such approach developed to protect normal cells from the toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs. The basic principle underlying cyclotherapy is p53- dependent cell cycle arrest of normal cells while killing cancer cells via a p53-independent mechanism using a second drug. In our research, we investigated the inhibitory effects of a combination of two low-dose anticancer drugs, …
The Trouble With Technology, John O'Connor
The Trouble With Technology, John O'Connor
Conference Papers
In contemporary education, technology is either hailed as the panacea for affordable mass education or dreaded as a threat to our humanity. At the European Culture and Technology Laboratory, technology is understood in the context of the Ancient Greek origin of the word: technē—meaning a system or a method of making or doing, an art or a craft; a technique or a practice, even a way of thinking. The tools humans use are not merely a means of intervention in our environment but also a way of becoming human and thus, technology has a fundamental impact on our identity and …
Marine Protected And Conserved Areas: Beneficial Uses Of Artificial Intelligence, Kyla Lucey
Marine Protected And Conserved Areas: Beneficial Uses Of Artificial Intelligence, Kyla Lucey
Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology
The ocean is an invaluable tool to the survival of humankind and “produces half of the world’s oxygen, absorbs and sequesters one third of the carbon dioxide human activities emit, provides protection from extreme weather events, and provides a source of food and livelihoods.” Without it, communities would suffer, animals would die off, industries would disappear, and the world would be much worse off. The recommendations made here reflect the growing concern the world has adopted regarding the climate crisis. This concern is warranted as many animals have already disappeared, plants are dwindling, and the once wild areas of the …
Mark-Recapture Methods In Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus Adamanteus) Monitoring, Carissa J. Adams
Mark-Recapture Methods In Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus Adamanteus) Monitoring, Carissa J. Adams
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus adamanteus; EDB) are an imperiled species native to the Southeastern United States longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) ecosystem. Several markrecapture methods have been used range-wide in hopes of increasing knowledge on their population numbers. I explored the efficacy of two mark-recapture methods (scale cauterization and dorsal head photography) using the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC EDB population in this multi-part study. The first method I evaluated was ventral scale branding, which has been widely implemented without knowledge of brand permanence. I classified misidentification errors at capture status (new versus recapture) and …

Natural and nature-based features have been implemented throughout New York City to provide habitat and reduce flooding, erosion, and pollution. The West Pond Living Shoreline in Jamaica Bay, NY was designed with organic breakwaters and native marsh plants, including S. alterniflora. Post-construction monitoring in 2021 found that percent coverage of S. alterniflora was lower than expected. To inform future management, we studied the effect of elevation, planting method, and shoreline energy exposure on the percent cover, average stem height, and average stem density of S. alterniflora. Elevation and plant growth data were collected within 8 one sq. meter quadrats at …

Mathematical Model For The Role Of Multiple Pericentromeric Repeats On Heterochromatin Assembly, Puranjan Ghimire, Mo Motamedi, Richard Joh
Physics Publications
Although the length and constituting sequences for pericentromeric repeats are highly variable across eukaryotes, the presence of multiple pericentromeric repeats is one of the conserved features of the eukaryotic chromosomes. Pericentromeric heterochromatin is often misregulated in human diseases, with the expansion of pericentromeric repeats in human solid cancers. In this article, we have developed a mathematical model of the RNAi-dependent methylation of H3K9 in the pericentromeric region of fission yeast. Our model, which takes copy number as an explicit parameter, predicts that the pericentromere is silenced only if there are many copies of repeats. It becomes bistable or desilenced if …

Ketamine has been shown to produce analgesia in various acute and chronic pain states; however, abuse liability concerns have limited its utility. The ketamine metabolite (2R,6R)-hydroxynorketamine (HNK) has been shown to produce antidepressant-like effects similar to ketamine without abuse liability concerns. (2R,6R)-HNK produces sustained analgesia in models of chronic pain, but has yet to be evaluated in models of acute pain. The present study evaluated the efficacy of acute (2R,6R)-HNK administration (one injection) in assays of pain-stimulated (52- and 56-degree hot plate test and acetic acid writhing) and …
Navigating The Labyrinth: An Analysis Of Gender Bias In Leadership Development Using Natural Language Processing, Michael Schwendeman
Navigating The Labyrinth: An Analysis Of Gender Bias In Leadership Development Using Natural Language Processing, Michael Schwendeman
Wayne State University Dissertations
This study employs a multi-trait, multi-method approach to investigate gender bias in leadership development evaluations in an organizational setting by combining traditional quantitative analyses with natural language processing (NLP) methodologies. Specifically, analysis of 360-degree ratings of leader competency revealed a null effect of leader gender on ratings of Agency and Communion when controlling for leader level, leader work region, rater gender, and rater source. These secondary variables, with the exception of rater gender, demonstrated small yet significant effects on competency ratings. Moreover, dictionary-based NLP and structural topic modeling analyses on narrative developmental feedback comments revealed minimal gender differences in feedback …

Assessing The Role Of Kmt2b Knockdown In Rhabdoid Tumorigenesis Utilizing Crispri, Karah Edmonds, Andrea Florian Phd
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
An aggressive blood cancer commonly observed in pediatric patients, Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL), has a regulatory MLL complex that promotes histone methyltransferation. Modifying histones utilizing histone methyltransferases like KMT2B (MLL2), is essential for gene expression by regulating transcription. Loss of function and inhibition of KMT2B leads to dysregulation of transcription and therefore promotes MLL tumorigenesis. To improve cancer-targeted therapies, we will use CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) to knock down the expression of KMT2B and measure levels of Rhabdoid tumor cell proliferation and apoptosis. Previous research surrounding the MLL complex suggests that decreased expression of KMT2B will lead to increased levels of …

Habitat loss due to deforestation is a primary threat to global biodiversity. Clearing tropical rainforests for agriculture leads to forest fragmentation. Forest fragments contain fewer large trees and provide lower food availability for primates compared to continuous forests. Mantled howler monkeys inhabit the increasingly fragmented rainforests of Central and South America and may need to alter their activity and spatial cohesion to mitigate competition and preserve energy in fragments where there is lower quality food. We compared howler monkey activity and spatial cohesion across a small forest fragment (La Suerte Biological Research Station, LSBRS) and a large, continuous forest (La …

There has been a longstanding tradition to use real human skeletons as educational aids in classrooms (2). The interactive nature of hands-on learning often results in the degradation of these skeletal specimens, and repairs are needed to bring them back to being fully functional. Drawing techniques from one of the few guides to restoring educational classroom skeletons {1) and museum approaches (2, 3, 5), we are able to find a method that works for three human skeletons at Dakota State University.
Monetary Incentive Delay Task Response In A Diverse Sample Of Adolescents: Advancing Health Promotion In This Age Group, Emily K. Carter
Monetary Incentive Delay Task Response In A Diverse Sample Of Adolescents: Advancing Health Promotion In This Age Group, Emily K. Carter
Open Access Master's Theses
The adolescent brain is becoming increasingly recognized as an important and distinct developmental period. Adolescence is also a period that has seen a recent increase in sexually transmitted infection (STI); those between ages 15-24 account for roughly 25% of the United States’ population but account for about 50% of annual STI incidents. Current behavioral-only intervention approaches have been limited in their capacity to help advance adolescent health behavior; translational approaches that utilize information about the neurological underpinnings of sexual health decision making offer the opportunity to obtain novel information about young people. The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based monetary incentive …

Exploring Boaters’ Intentions And Awareness To Explain Why Some Anchor On Coral Reefs, Caroline Caton
Open Access Master's Theses
Coral reefs provide a variety of ecosystem services to humans, but are also degrading due to human activities such as boat anchoring. Understanding why some boaters anchor on coral reef, even when environmentally-responsible alternatives are available, will lead to effective management with substantial environmental benefits. Anchoring on reef could occur intentionally, because boaters prioritize other considerations that outweigh any desire to not anchor on reef, or unintentionally, because they lack true awareness of the bottom type. We conducted structured interviews, informed by the Theory of Planned Behavior, with boaters in the British Virgin Islands to uncover the motivations and awareness …
The Association Among Various Types Of Substance Use And The Perpetration And Victimization Of Physical And Psychological Intimate Partner Violence, Sam Ferreira
Open Access Master's Theses
The current study identified the association between substances and the perpetration and victimization of physical and psychological IPV. Due to limited data collected, the research questions were modified to specifically examine alcohol and cannabis use rather than various substances. Thus, the following questions were examined: (1) How are cannabis and alcohol use related to perpetration and victimization of physical IPV among adolescent females? and (2) How are cannabis and alcohol use related to perpetration and victimization of psychological IPV among adolescent females? These research questions were examined through four binary logistic regression models to examine the relationship between the predictors …
