Dystopian Dreams, Utopian Nightmares: Ai And The Permanence Of Racism, Chaz Arnett
Dystopian Dreams, Utopian Nightmares: Ai And The Permanence Of Racism, Chaz Arnett
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay draws connections between Octavia Butler’s Parable series (Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents), HBO’s Westworld, and Derrick Bell’s Faces at the Bottom of the Well: The Permanence of Racism to highlight how the reconfiguration and transmutation of race through technological change is facilitated by corresponding shifts in legal doctrine, theory, policy, and practice. It takes the overlapping threads from these three sources, which struggle with the idea of change within larger systems of unavoidable, repetitive destruction, and ties them to the law’s role in helping to shield race through the storms of change …

Abstract
The aim of this study was to measure pollinator abundance and diversity across Virginia Commonwealth University’s Monroe Park Campus in Richmond, Virginia, especially focusing on the impact of campus plantings on pollinators.
Methods
18 transects across VCU’s Monroe Park Campus, as well as 2 at the nearby Amelia Street School native meadow planting, were established and stratified by planting composition (native/invasive) and species diversity. Each transect was inventoried every other week for pollinators from April through July of 2023. Nonparametric and median-based linear models were used to test differences in pollinator abundance and morphospecies diversity across planting types.

Enhancing Learning Through Sign Language, Christopher Lane Pomeroy
Enhancing Learning Through Sign Language, Christopher Lane Pomeroy
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Developmental disabilities, such as cognitive delays or autism, are often associated with challenges in verbal communication. These challenges can limit a student’s ability to engage and demonstrate understanding in academic settings. Identifying alternative forms of expression, such as manual sign language, can be crucial in promoting learning within special education environments. This paper explores research on the physical and mental skills involved in using manual sign language for communication, examines interventions that use sign language to enhance understanding and basic communication, and discusses the potential for generalizing sign language as a tool in academic and societal contexts.

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trauma-informed teaching is a life changing undertaking that recognizes the important impact of trauma on students’ lives and learning experiences. This thesis provides a concise overview of the key principles and benefits of trauma-informed teaching. To understand trauma, teachers/service providers need to know that trauma can take many forms, including physical, emotional, or psychological abuse, neglect, or exposure to violence. It is very important for teachers to recognize that trauma is widespread and can significantly obstruct a student’s ability to thrive in school. This thesis has been written to define trauma and inform special education teachers on how to apply …

Acknowledging the commendable efforts of colleagues in articulating significant concepts and theoretical approaches to enhance visual literacy within the LIS field, this work critically examines the Visual Literacy (VL) Framework. The analysis calls for a more inclusive representation of diverse experiences, particularly those of individuals with disabilities. Drawing inspiration from the conceptualization of critique as care, the study emphasizes a collaborative approach to integrate social justice, equity, and inclusion principles better into LIS work. While recognizing the VL Framework's value as a starting point, the study identifies gaps related to universal accessibility and challenges in the language used. The chapter …
Modulation Of Diet-Induced Gut Inflammation In Slowing Initiation Of Hematologic Malignancies, Esther Nyarkoa Mensah
Modulation Of Diet-Induced Gut Inflammation In Slowing Initiation Of Hematologic Malignancies, Esther Nyarkoa Mensah
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The intestinal tract serves as a host to an extremely complex microbial system. Microbes in the gut regulate their metabolism in response to chemicals generated by other microorganisms as well as nutrition supply from dietary intake. Alterations in gut bacteria have been implicated in the development of metabolic disorders such as obesity and the progression of diseases such as Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Although the cause of obesity is multifactorial, the consumption of high-fat or sugar-rich diets (Western diets) has been proposed as a significant contributor to this global epidemic. Obesity is a major public health concern that has been extensively …

Three Fundamental Challenges To The Advancement Of Stemflow Research And Its Integration Into Natural Science, John T. Van Stan Ii, Juan Pinos
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Plant canopies divert a portion of precipitation to the base of their stems through "stemflow", a phenomenon that influences the canopy water balance, soil microbial ecology, and intrasystem nutrient cycling. However, a comprehensive integration of stemflow into theoretical and numerical models in natural science remains limited. This perspective examines three unresolved, fundamental questions hindering this integration, spanning the canopy to the soil. First, the precise source area within the canopy that generates stemflow is undefined. Thus, we asked, "whence stemflow?" Current common assumptions equate it to the entire tree canopy, a potentially misleading simplification that could affect our interpretation of …

Mothers' Perceptions Of Stigma: Implications For Early Identification And Treatment For Children With A History Of Prenatal Opioid Exposure, Pamela Jane Holland
Mothers' Perceptions Of Stigma: Implications For Early Identification And Treatment For Children With A History Of Prenatal Opioid Exposure, Pamela Jane Holland
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
There is a lack of research that specifies the long-term effects on a child’s language development when prenatally exposed to opioids (Fill et al.,2018; Rutherford et al., 2022). Despite this, children prenatally exposed to opioids are more likely to be referred for, qualify for, and receive therapy services secondary to developmental delays and speech/language deficits. (Kaltenbach et al., 2018). Stigma continues to be a barrier to the initiation of early intervention services for children prenatally exposed to opioids (Levickis et al., 2020; Livingston et al., 2011; Peacock-Chambers et al., 2020). This phenomenological study aims to understand the perceptions of the …
Assessing Bodily Location Of The Egocenter: Testing Content Validity Of The Dispositional Self-Location Questionnaire, Marie Sester
Assessing Bodily Location Of The Egocenter: Testing Content Validity Of The Dispositional Self-Location Questionnaire, Marie Sester
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This study reports on preliminary work to develop a questionnaire for identifying self-location and test it against self-location as indicated on a human silhouette. Self-location, also known as the ego-center or the seat of attention, is the sense of where the “I” or subject is experienced relative to the body. Determining the location of the sense of self is of value since variations in self-location have been associated with differences in attitudes, motivations, and behaviors. A 14-item questionnaire was developed based on demonstrated characteristics of head-located self and heart-located self. Results showed greater than 90% congruence between self-location as determined …

How Active Use Of Social Media Is Linked To Mental Illness, Samuel Williams
How Active Use Of Social Media Is Linked To Mental Illness, Samuel Williams
Integrated Studies
Ever since the first social media site was created in 1997, social media has had a significant impact on people's mental health. For some, it can lead to depression and isolation, it can lead to FOMO, can become addictive, and Doomscrolling can create bad habits. In this project, I hope to bring awareness to the topic of social media affecting mental health because it is a problem in our world, and the more self-awareness we learn about how it affects our habits, the more we can help give people a better understanding and way of managing it.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and executive function deficits. The DSM-5-TR (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022), along with the DSM IV-TR (APA, 2000) and the DSM-5 (APA, 2013), emphasizes the behavioral aspects of ADHD while giving scant attention to executive function deficits, complicating diagnosis for clinicians and potentially resulting in misdiagnosis. This study seeks to identify the prevalence of ADHD diagnoses based on psychological evaluations where data from behavioral rating scales meet DSM criteria, but data from executive functioning measures do not, suggesting potential misdiagnosis. In this descriptive mixed design content …

Quiet Service: Serving God And Others From Behind The Scenes, Amy Reinhold
Librarian Publications and Presentations
One of the tenants of the Christian faith is service to God and others. Serving others is typically a front-facing activity, but not always. This paper describes the nature of service, how academic libraries in general serve their patrons, and focuses on how behind-the-scenes activities in the Technical Services department serve patrons in impactful ways. By focusing on the needs of others and serving them well, one can bring honor and glory to God.

Adverse health effects associated with exposures to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a concern for public health and are driven by their elimination half-lives and accumulation in specific tissues. However, data on PFAS binding in human tissues are limited. Accumulation of PFAS in human tissues has been linked to interactions with specific proteins and lipids in target organs. Additional data on PFAS binding and unbound fractions (funbound) in whole human tissues are urgently needed. Here, we address this gap by using rapid equilibrium dialysis to measure the binding and funbound of 16 PFAS with 3 …

Comparison Of Energy Budget Of Cockroach Nymph (Hemimetabolous) And Hornworm (Holometabolous) Under Food Restriction, Charles J. Green, Chen Hou
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Animals with different life histories budget their intake energy differently when food availability is low. It has been shown previously that hornworm (larva of Manduca sexta), a holometabolous insect species with a short development stage, prioritizes growth at the price of metabolism under food restriction, but it is unclear how hemimetabolous insect species with a relatively long development period budget their intake energy under food scarcity. Here, we use orange head cockroaches (Eublaberus posticus) to investigate this question. We found that for both species under food restriction, rates of metabolism and growth were suppressed, but the degree of reduction was …
