Electronic Health Record Use Among Older Adults In Primary Care, Alianne Dearman, Kosheya Johnson, Santanna Nesbitt, Jessica Sullivan, Hayden Tranum

MSN Research Projects

The use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) has transformed the way healthcare providers deliver patient care. EHRs enable quick access to patient records from various providers, leading to a more comprehensive approach to healthcare. They have become an essential tool for both healthcare professionals and patients. The patient view of an EHR is often referred to as a patient portal. This study aims to explore the significance and advantages of patient portal utilization by examining previous research and highlighting the outcomes. It also seeks to identify barriers that prevent patients over the age of 65 from using their EHR, with …

Dpr-Mediated H2o2 Resistance Contributes To Streptococci Survival In A Cystic Fibrosis Airway Model System, Rendi R. Rogers Jan 2024

Dpr-Mediated H2o2 Resistance Contributes To Streptococci Survival In A Cystic Fibrosis Airway Model System, Rendi R. Rogers

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The cystic fibrosis (CF) lung environment is conducive to the colonization of bacteria as polymicrobial biofilms, which are associated with poor clinical outcomes for persons with CF (pwCF). Streptococcus spp. is highly prevalent in the CF airway, but its role in the CF lung microbiome is poorly understood. Some studies have shown Streptococcus spp. to be associated with better clinical outcomes for pwCF, while others show that high abundance of Streptococcus spp. is correlated with exacerbations. Our lab previously reported a polymicrobial culture system consisting of four CF-relevant pathogens that can be used to study microbial behavior in a more …

Electrochemical Investigations Of Polyvalent Vs Monovalent Binding On Dna Sensors And Synthesis Of Dna Oligonucleotides Capable Of Oxidative Crosslinking, Jeremy David Mendez Jan 2024

Electrochemical Investigations Of Polyvalent Vs Monovalent Binding On Dna Sensors And Synthesis Of Dna Oligonucleotides Capable Of Oxidative Crosslinking, Jeremy David Mendez

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes two projects: i) experiments aimed at electrochemically differentiating polyvalent binding and monovalent binding of “DNA stars” on gold electrodes ii) experiments to synthesize DNA oligonucleotides that are capable of crosslinking under electrochemical control. We describe the design, synthesis and purification of “DNA stars”, and their binding to gold electrodes displaying complementary strands functionalized with a “redox reporter”, methylene blue. Square wave voltammetry was utilized to compare the effect of binding of complementary strand and various DNA stars. Though we were able to distinguish the binding of complementary strand and DNA stars, we could not conclusively state this …

Reevaluating Positive Freedom Through The Philosophy Of Amartya Sen With A Focus On Education As A Catalyst For Freedom, Emilie Mathilde Vesten Haakansson Jan 2024

Reevaluating Positive Freedom Through The Philosophy Of Amartya Sen With A Focus On Education As A Catalyst For Freedom, Emilie Mathilde Vesten Haakansson

Theses and Dissertations

Education has since ancient times been used as a societal tool to develop and cultivate society’s individuals into participating members. Education which is considered a fundamental human right also holds potential transformative power to enable and empower individuals to exercise their freedom to create a life that aligns with their own values, ideas and goals. However, how effective an educational system can be, ultimately depends on the accessibility and quality of the education as well as the overall system the educational institutions operate in. This thesis explores how education can function as a catalyst for furthering individuals’ freedom through a …

Project Final Report Watershed Plan For Crafts Colly, Sand Lick, And Dry Fork, Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute

KWRRI Research Reports

The North Fork: Whitesburg Tributaries Watershed Plan, developed under this project, provides a path to improve waterbodies impacted by poor wastewater treatment, coal mining, and encroachments on floodplain by housing and roadways. Crafts Colly, Sand Lick, and Dry Fork are tributaries to the North Fork of the Kentucky River. They are located just north of the City of Whitesburg, in Letcher County, which is in the coalfields of southeastern Kentucky. The three watersheds encompass 18 square miles of primarily forested lands and about 30 miles of streams, most of which are entrenched. Because of the steep mountain terrain, most of …

Lipschitz Stability For Impulsive Riemann–Liouville Fractional Differential Equations, Martin Bohner, Snezhana Hristova Jan 2024

Lipschitz Stability For Impulsive Riemann–Liouville Fractional Differential Equations, Martin Bohner, Snezhana Hristova

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Initial and impulsive conditions for initial value problems of systems of nonlinear impulsive Riemann–Liouville fractional differential equations are introduced. The case when the lower limit of the fractional derivative is changed at each time point of the impulses is studied. In the case studied, the solution has a singularity at the initial time and at any point of the impulses. This leads to the need to appropriately generalize the classical concept of Lipschitz stability. Two derivative types of Lyapunov functions are utilized in order to deduce sufficient conditions for the new stability concept. Three examples are provided for illustration purpose …

Neither Jew Nor Greek: Considering A Christian Social Justice Model, Steven Brooks Jan 2024

Neither Jew Nor Greek: Considering A Christian Social Justice Model, Steven Brooks

Faculty Publications and Presentations

American society has been on a necessary trek towards social justice, mainly because of a history of institutional slavery, the systematic oppression of native peoples, and unnecessary gender bias. However, in the 21st century, social justice has not only become a rallying cry for socialism, but also a platform that has resulted in inequalities. In contrast, a Christian social justice model recognizes humanity as equal recipients of God’s grace in that “God is no respecter of persons” (Acts 10:34, NIV). The “level playing field” of social justice is summarized in Jesus’ words, “For God so loved the world…” (John 3:16a, …

Enforcing International Law Against Corporations: A Stakeholder Management Approach, Kishanthi Parella Jan 2024

Enforcing International Law Against Corporations: A Stakeholder Management Approach, Kishanthi Parella

Scholarly Articles

There is an important but oft neglected relationship between the problems of corporate governance and international law. Corporate managers grapple with how to respond to society's demands that their enterprises do better when it comes to protecting people and the planet. These demands take many forms, including increased pressure for “sustainability” and “environmental, social, and governance” (“ESG”) measures. These demands are made in response to the economic, social, environmental, and political crises facing our world and a recognition of the responsibility of corporations and other business actors to contribute to their resolution. What is often unrecognized is that many of …

Six-Month Pain And Function Outcome Expectations Were Established For Total Knee Arthroplasty Using The Smallest Worthwhile Effect, Daniel L. Riddle, Nancy Henderson Jan 2024

Six-Month Pain And Function Outcome Expectations Were Established For Total Knee Arthroplasty Using The Smallest Worthwhile Effect, Daniel L. Riddle, Nancy Henderson

Physical Therapy Publications

Introduction: Interpretations of patient-reported outcome measures following knee arthroplasty lack context and typically do not account for costs, risks and benefits compared to an alternative treatment. The primary purpose of our paper is to estimate expectations patients have for pain and function destination outcome, six-months following surgery relative to the outcome expected if knee arthroplasty was not done. Secondary purposes were to determine if statistically significant changes in the smallest worthwhile six-month outcome occurred following an interactive discussion and to assess the construct validity of the expected six-month outcome obtained at baseline.

Methods: This was a secondary analysis …

Gis-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis For Marine Energy Site Selection: A Case Study Comparison Between Puerto Rico And Hawaii, Sarah Hall Jan 2024

Gis-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis For Marine Energy Site Selection: A Case Study Comparison Between Puerto Rico And Hawaii, Sarah Hall

Environmental Studies Honors Papers

Geospatial information systems (GIS) enable easy visualization of geospatial data representing different criteria important for optimal siting of marine energy projects. Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) is a geospatial analysis method that facilitates the evaluation of multiple, usually overlapping, site criteria. While GIS-based MCDA has been used extensively for land-based renewable energy projects, limited research exists on its application to marine-based renewable energy projects. Similarly, most literature overlooks the integration of social or environmental justice data. This project applies GIS-based MCDA to conduct site selection analysis for two marine renewable energy (MRE) projects in Puerto Rico and Hawaii. The results for …

Negotiating Belonging: Social Class Identity And The Lived Experiences Of First-Generation College Students, Sarah Grace Barba Jan 2024

Negotiating Belonging: Social Class Identity And The Lived Experiences Of First-Generation College Students, Sarah Grace Barba

Spectrum

In the United States, social class comprises economic, social, and cultural capital but is more commonly associated with economic capital (wealth). In higher education, social class is more visible to first-generation students because they come from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. For first-generation students, education is a ladder to a higher social class. However, research shows that it is challenging for first-generation to achieve this in a dominant middle-class environment in college because of the shock of differences between themselves and their peers, resulting in feelings of not belonging in their campus environment. First-generation students are more likely to arrive unprepared for …

Factors Associated With Acoustic Bat Presence During Spring Emergence In The Appalachian Mountains Of Western Virginia, Emily Kirk Pody Jan 2024

Factors Associated With Acoustic Bat Presence During Spring Emergence In The Appalachian Mountains Of Western Virginia, Emily Kirk Pody

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Studies of threats that bats face during hibernation have increased in response to white-nose syndrome (WNS), a fungal disease that has ravaged North American bat populations. However, impacts of WNS on bat ecology during spring emergence, when bats are potentially recovering from infection and allocating resources for reproduction, is relatively understudied. As more bat species become listed at the federal and state level, the need to understand the factors associated with spring emergence is critical for improving conservation guidelines and habitat management practices. Acoustic monitoring is an efficient method for monitoring bat presence for prolonged periods of time, giving biologists …

Colic As Trauma Release? A Comparative Exploration Of Play Therapy In Children With And Without A History Of Colic, Nilüfer Devecigil, Jenny Wade Jan 2024

Colic As Trauma Release? A Comparative Exploration Of Play Therapy In Children With And Without A History Of Colic, Nilüfer Devecigil, Jenny Wade

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Colic, characterized by excessive, inconsolable crying in early infancy, has long puzzled researchers and clinicians. Traditional approaches have predominantly relied on medical models, yet they have failed to provide satisfactory explanations or effective treatments. This blinded comparative qualitative study took a novel approach by asking: What are the womb and birth experiences of colicky babies in relation to the prenatal relational trauma between mother and fetus or within the fetal environment? The sample comprised 23 mother-child dyads, 10 children with a history of colic and 13 without, whose histories and interactions unfolded through 10 videotaped sessions of Experiential Play Therapy. …

The Applications And Uses Of Immersive Virtual Reality: A Multisensory Approach To Effective And Efficient Academic Pedagogy, Jessica M. Myara Jan 2024

The Applications And Uses Of Immersive Virtual Reality: A Multisensory Approach To Effective And Efficient Academic Pedagogy, Jessica M. Myara

PCOM Capstone Projects

The long-established model of traditional educational pedagogy confers students with the necessary information required to build knowledge but lacks the ability to engross students in the learning process through active learning methods and therefore lacks the tools necessary for student engagement. Through examination of the building blocks of learning and the current pedagogical approaches, which apply learner-centered models for learning, it becomes clear that to develop an understanding of knowledge students require more than traditional didactic lectures and that effective teaching demands re-evaluation of teaching methods for better learning outcomes. As an extension of active learning, the idea of multisensory …

A New Log Lindley Distribution With Applications, Fatimah S, A, Alzawq, Ahmed K, Elkholy, Abdul Hadi N. Ahmed Jan 2024

A New Log Lindley Distribution With Applications, Fatimah S, A, Alzawq, Ahmed K, Elkholy, Abdul Hadi N. Ahmed

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

This paper introduces a new generalization of the Lindley distribution introduced by [1], using the basic idea of [2] and along the lines of [3]. The new distribution is a compound of the Lindley and logarithmic distributions. We refer to the new model as the logarithmic-Lindley (Log-L) distribution. This model is capable of modeling various shapes of aging and failure criteria. The properties of the Log-L model are discussed, and the maximum likelihood estimation method is used to evaluate the parameters involved. Finally, the usefulness of the new model for modeling reliability data is illustrated using a two real data …

A Population-Based Study Of Children Suggests Blunted Morning Cortisol Rhythms Are Associated With Alterations Of The Systemic Inflammatory State, Runia Roy, Utkarsh J. Dang, Kim M. Huffman, Tchilabalo Alayi, Yetrib Hathout, Kanneboyina Nagaraju, Paul S. Visich, Eric P. Hoffman

Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship

Background: In children, digital media, lifestyle, and the COVID pandemic have impacted sunlight exposure, exercise, and diet patterns - cues that entrain the circadian clock. We hypothesized that low morning cortisol reflects a weak circadian clock, impacting the pro-inflammatory state. The primary objective was to test relationships between diurnal cortisol fluctuations and the inflammatory state in children as a means of providing indirect support for this hypothesis. Methods: The Cardiovascular Health Intervention Program (CHIP) was a population-based cross-sectional and longitudinal study of circadian health in public elementary school children in Southern Maine, USA (recruitment period 2012–2017). Participants were 689 students …
