Peril And Promise: Student Experiences Of Virtual Reality And Implications For Inclusive Social Justice Pedagogy, Michelle Vannatta
Peril And Promise: Student Experiences Of Virtual Reality And Implications For Inclusive Social Justice Pedagogy, Michelle Vannatta
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Virtual reality (VR) is a fast-evolving technology rapidly being integrated into education and training in multiple sectors of society. As the use of VR spreads, it is important to critically analyze both its role in effective pedagogies and how students experience it. Virtual reality has extraordinary promise for deeply engaging students, and it also poses particular challenges for equitable and effective teaching of diverse students. This paper discusses students’ responses to a VR exercise and examines some of the complexities VR presents around racial justice, gender equity, and economic fairness. Virtual reality technology may be less effective and less comfortable …

Effect Of Nano-Extract Of Nigella Sativa Seeds On The Histological Structure Of The Kidneys In Male Albino Rats Treated With Tartrazine, Noor Mahdi Hasnawi, Jabbar Abadi Mohammed
Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences
Background: The kidneys are crucial organs responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body by regulating water, electrolyte balance, acid-base balance, and excreting metabolic waste products. Each kidney contains about one million nephrons, the functional units that filter blood to produce urine. There is growing interest in finding natural alternatives to chemical treatments, including exploring the therapeutic potential of plant-based extracts.
Objective: The study aimed to develop a nano-extract from Nigella sativa seeds and evaluate its role in reducing or preventing tissue damage in the kidneys of rats with induced anemia.
Methods: Thirty-six male albino rats, aged 9-11 weeks and weighing …
Emerging Therapeutic Strategies For Wnt-Dependent Colon Cancer Targeting Macropinocytosis, Nydia Tejeda-Munoz, Grace Binder, Kuo-Ching Mei
Emerging Therapeutic Strategies For Wnt-Dependent Colon Cancer Targeting Macropinocytosis, Nydia Tejeda-Munoz, Grace Binder, Kuo-Ching Mei
Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
Aberrations in the Wnt signaling pathway, particularly mutations in genes like APC and β-catenin, are pivotal in initiating and driving the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC), establishing this pathway as a crucial target for therapeutic intervention. Membrane trafficking plays a key role in regulating Wnt signaling by controlling the activation, modulation, and secretion of essential signaling molecules that contribute to CRC progression. This review explores the connection between membrane trafficking and Wnt signaling, with a specific focus on macropinocytosis—an endocytic process involved in nutrient uptake that also plays a role in Wnt signal regulation. The relationship between Wnt signaling and …
Speculum Feminarum: Feminine Representation And Identity In Fifteenth-Century France, Karli R. Snyder
Speculum Feminarum: Feminine Representation And Identity In Fifteenth-Century France, Karli R. Snyder
Art & Art History ETDs
Late medieval views of women in Western European culture, specifically in fifteenth-century France, were predicated on the ideologies of "other." According to normative sociocultural attitudes of this period, women were immoral, lascivious, and indulged in frivolity. Their culturally acceptable and, therefore, natural roles were delineated solely as that of wife and mother. Although the origin of these views is obscured by time, there are scores of textual and visual examples of this cultural labeling. This thesis focuses on how the ideologies of feminine sociocultural roles developed and matured during the late Middle Ages. By comparatively analyzing copies of the visual …

Impact Of Chytrid Fungal Infection On Muscle Structure In Amphibians, Esther Hassan, Chisom Ukachukwu
Impact Of Chytrid Fungal Infection On Muscle Structure In Amphibians, Esther Hassan, Chisom Ukachukwu
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Many fungal infections affect a wide variety of ecosystems. They cause numerous negative consequences, one in particular being the disruption of biodiversity. disrupting biodiversity and leading to numerous negative consequences. A previous study in the Kinsey lab focused on a chytrid fungal disease, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a species of chytrid fungus. This disease poses a major threat to amphibian populations worldwide. The Bd zoospores infect the epidermis impacting essential systems. This leads to electrolyte transport that is conducted through the epidermis from the environment has now become disrupted and the ions required for daily functions are diminished. Eventually, these lack …

Shorting Innovation, Nancy S. Kim
Shorting Innovation, Nancy S. Kim
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
The high price of prescription drugs is often attributed to the lack of alternative therapies and the costs of drug development and clinical trials. Short attacks are an underdiscussed contributor to both. They divert and deplete a biotech’s resources, ultimately reducing competition and keeping new drugs off the market.
Short selling (shorting) involves selling borrowed stock. This Article addresses its impact on small biotech companies, defined here as those with a market capitalization of $2 billion or less. These small biotechs contribute disproportionately to innovative research and development but face many obstacles on the road to regulatory approval. Short attacks …
A Liberty Interest In Release: Recognizing The Unconstitutionality Of Youth Offender Parole Regimes That Undermine Juvenile-Specific Eighth Amendment Protections, Sarah Cook
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
This Note proposes that procedural due process safeguards are necessary to vindicate the right to release for juvenile offenders who mature and rehabilitate. Miller v. Alabama and Montgomery v. Louisiana announced this right, but state actors have resisted the “central intuition” of those cases—“that children who commit even heinous crimes are capable of change.” Several overlapping analyses establish a liberty interest in release for transiently immature juvenile offenders based on the Eighth Amendment, the Fourteenth Amendment, local law, or some combination of the three. Most of these analyses hinge on the premise that post-Miller juvenile offender parole processes are …
Communication In Noise Is The Window On Cognition, R. Haven Wiley
Communication In Noise Is The Window On Cognition, R. Haven Wiley
Animal Sentience
As Griffin surmised, communication is the window on cognition, but as shown here, only if it is noisy. This commentary is an invitation to consider the full implications of the evolution of noisy communication. A combination of Information Theory, Signal Detection Theory, and Natural Selection, in a unified theory of the evolution of communication, reveals that noise is inevitable. All organisms are thus decision makers. Perception, thought, freedom of decision, self-awareness, metabolism, and natural selection all share the consequences of signals in noise. A full understanding of each requires attention to the errors of receivers. Griffin’s hunch is correct with …

Comparison Of Efficient Deep Learning Architectures For Lactobacillus Species Identification, Dea Aisyah Rusmawati, Ishak Ariawan, Afrinal Firmanda
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Identifying microorganism species, such as Lactobacillus, is essential in ensuring the food products' quality and safety. Traditional laboratory practice requires expert knowledge and experience, but the method is expensive and time-consuming due to complex sample preparation. Faster, more accurate, and cheaper computational methods, such as transfer learning technology, are needed for the Lactobacillus species classification. The technique has been effective in a variety of image recognition contexts. Deep learning architecture can also be applied as an innovative strategy for digital image-based identification. Therefore, this research aims to compare several deep-learning architectures in classifying bacterial strains of Lactobacillus. The four architectures …
