How Leaf Size Affects Rate Of Leaf Litter Decomposition On A Greenroof, Douglass J. Lescher I, Makenzie T. Boylston, Faith A. Jackson, Leah Abraham, Darlene Panvini

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Leaf litter decomposition is an essential biological phenomenon that occurs within ecosystems, as it affects factors such as nutrient cycling, plant growth, soil fertility and other processes. Understanding the mechanisms that are attributed to leaf litter decomposition can help explain the role that leaf litter plays in ecosystems. A total of eight leaf litter bags were placed in environments of similar conditions on a green roof with the purpose of understanding how leaf size affects the rate of decomposition. The two species of variable size were coneflower (Echinacea tennesseensis, larger leaf) and baptisia (Baptisia australis, smaller …

Enhancing Chemotherapy: Synergistic Action Of Cisplatin And Berberine Hydrochloride Against Osteosarcoma, Adam S. Al-Droubi, Andrea Florian Nov 2024

Enhancing Chemotherapy: Synergistic Action Of Cisplatin And Berberine Hydrochloride Against Osteosarcoma, Adam S. Al-Droubi, Andrea Florian

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Osteosarcoma, the most common type of bone cancer, is notably aggressive and prone to a rapid rate of metastasis. When the tumor is localized; the survival rate is approximately 76% and can often be treated with surgery. However, once metastasis occurs, the survival rate drops to 24% and must be treated with chemotherapy. The standard treatment for metastatic osteosarcoma typically involves combination therapeutics, with cisplatin being a key component despite its severe side effects. Unfortunately, osteosarcoma exhibits a natural resistance to chemotherapy driven by the overexpression of drug efflux pumps, DNA repair mechanisms, and apoptosis avoidance mutations. To address these …

Exth-52. Simultaneous Targeting Of Tumor Cells And Tumor-Associated Macrophages To Reprogram Glioblastoma By Tumor-Suppressive Microrna, Grace Nguyen, Minhye Noh, Alexandra Miller, Minxin Huang, Yulin Dai, Zhongming Zhao, Ji Young Yoo, Tae Jin Lee

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive type of primary brain tumors due in part to cell-intrinsic and cell-extrinsic mechanisms. The ability of GBM tumor to not only resist conventional therapies but also induce an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) is thought to underlie the failure of immunotherapies. Thus, strategies to target both tumor cells and immunosuppressive immune cells, such as tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), are of great interest. The ability of microRNA (miRNA) to target multiple genes is favorable to alter the character of the TME and cancer cells. Previously, we have shown that tumor suppressive miRNA, miR-138, can effectively regulate the …

Impact Of Coverage And Guest Residue On Polyproline Ii Helix Peptide Antifouling, Rebecca S. Ahn, Henry T. Grome, Sogol Asaei, Geeta Verma, Christina S. Dang, Harihara Baskaran, Julie N. Renner

Faculty Scholarship

Polyproline II (PPII) peptide sequences are recognized as promising biomaterials because of their attractive antifouling properties. However, the mechanisms behind their antifouling behavior have not been fully characterized. In this work we show that PPII peptide coverage, controlled by adsorption time, significantly reduces the fouling of bovine serum albumin (BSA, a model foulant). In addition, guest residues introduced into the PPII sequence are shown to significantly impact BSA adsorption as well as human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) spreading. This research will help guide future PPII peptide designs for incorporation into novel biomaterials.

Biomechanical Insights Of Head Trauma Based On Computational Simulation, Ghaidaa Abdulrahman Khalid

AUIQ Technical Engineering Science

Head injuries from falls are a major cause of illness and death in children due to trauma. Despite their prevalence and impact, there is limited understanding of how children's heads react during impact events. Infant Post-Mortem-Human-Surrogate (PMHS) testing, a reasonable method for studying impact biomechanics, faces significant restrictions due to emotional, moral, and ethical issues. Computer modeling, though holding significant promise for creating alternative pediatric head surrogates, encounters numerous challenges because of the intricacies of child growth and development. A finite-element (FE) model of an infant head was created from high-resolution CT scans, utilizing published data on tissue material properties. …

Herein, we synthesized two amphiphilic cyclic peptides, incorporating tryptophan and arginine residues, linked to dasatinib via a Cathepsin B-sensitive tetrapeptide (Gly-Phe-Leu-Gly). To mitigate steric hindrance and optimize drug release, we integrated two different linkers, succinate and glutarate, between the drug and peptide. The synthesis involved solid-phase techniques for the assembly of the peptide, followed by the coupling of the peptide on-resin with the linker, mild cleavage, and solution-phase cyclization. Conjugation of the peptide-attached linker with dasatinib was conducted in the presence of N-methylmorpholine and 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC), generating the novel prodrugs. The synthesized compounds were characterized by high-resolution mass …

Myc And Egr1 Expression In Colorectal Cancer Cells With An Oncogenic Mutation In Ctnnb1 And Normal P53, Sophia Vickers, Erick Spears, Phd

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Cancer is often initiated by genetic alterations that affect cellular proliferation, survival, and differentiation. Colorectal cancers are specifically initiated and driven by mutations affecting the Wnt signaling pathway and mutations in the CTNNB1 gene are the second most common of these mutations found in colorectal cancers. Among these, mutations in the CTNNB1 gene, encoding β-catenin, frequently lead to dysregulated Wnt signaling, a hallmark of colorectal cancer. The proto-oncogene MYC and the early growth response gene EGR1 are known to be critical downstream effectors of several oncogenic pathways. MYC is a known β-catenin target gene and under certain cellular contexts, EGR1 …
