Understanding Orthopaedic Infections: A Conceptual Approach, Gregory Laborde, Christopher Bloise, George Karam
Understanding Orthopaedic Infections: A Conceptual Approach, Gregory Laborde, Christopher Bloise, George Karam
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Memorizing mounds of facts without having an effective conceptual framework to store them is often an unsuccessful learning style because memory frequently fails without understanding. To accomplish this goal, we offer a framework of ideas called "concept maps". Of the many strategies for metacognition (that is, thinking about thinking), concept mapping is proven to improve meaningful and independent learning. We used this approach to guide understanding of common orthopaedic infections. This paper is not meant to serve as an approach on how to treat, but rather as a storage system with the ability to assist in understanding orthopaedic infections. …

Population growth, industrialization, and the need to ensure water quality have fostered the demand for analytical methods and tools to determine one of the important values of water quality standards. The oxygen demand of a given water matrix provides valuable information about the presence of organic compounds in a sample. The TiO2-based photoelectrocatalytic COD (PECOD) method offers a faster, more efficient, and more accurate alternative than conventional methods. Highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays (HOTNAs) were synthesized by anodizing titanium metal at 45V for 2 hours. HOTNAs/FTO photoanodes are used to oxidize organic compounds in water. HOTNAs/FTO photoanode has a bandgap …

D101n: A Unique And Ill-Understood Familial Als-Related Sod1 Mutant, Analisa Lott
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Background: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease, with 90% of documented cases considered sporadic and about 10% showing a hereditary link; such cases are deemed as familial ALS (fALS). Superoxide dismutase (SOD), a copper-zinc binding enzyme that protects cells from damaging free radicals, has been linked to fALS with certain toxic gain of function mutations, such as the D101N mutant. The human SOD1 D101N mutant has been shown to be associated with rapidly progressing neurodegeneration yet is less prone to aggregation than similar mutants, but its deviation from wild-type (WT) SOD1 remains misunderstood.
Objective: Although the D101N …

Chronic stress, a risk factor for many neuropsychiatric conditions, causes dysregulation in the immune system in both humans and animal models. Additionally, inflammation and synapse loss have been associated with deficits in social behavior. The complement system, a key player of innate immunity, has been linked to social behavior impairments caused by chronic stress. However, it is not known whether complement inhibition can help prevent neuroinflammation and behavioral deficits caused by chronic stress. In this study, we investigated the potential of a site-targeted complement inhibitor to ameliorate chronic stress-induced changes in social behavior and inflammatory markers in the prefrontal cortex …

Patients with metastatic ovarian cancer (OvCa) have a 5-year survival rate of < 30% due to the persisting dissemination of chemoresistant cells in the peritoneal fluid and the immunosuppressive microenvironment in the peritoneal cavity. Here, we report that intraperitoneal administration of β-glucan and IFNγ (BI) induced robust tumor regression in clinically relevant models of metastatic OvCa. BI induced tumor regression by controlling fluid tumor burden and activating localized antitumor immunity. β-glucan alone cleared ascites and eliminated fluid tumor cells by inducing intraperitoneal clotting in the fluid and Dectin-1-Syk-dependent NETosis in the omentum. In omentum tumors, BI expanded a novel subset of immunostimulatory IL27+ macrophages and neutralizing IL27 impaired BI efficacy in vivo. Moreover, BI directly induced IL27 secretion in macrophages where single agent treatment did not. Finally, BI extended mouse survival in a chemoresistant model and significantly improved chemotherapy response in a chemo-sensitive model. In summary, we propose a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of metastatic OvCa.

Background and Objectives
Milling is one of the most important postharvest processes in rice production. Traditionally, the McGill #2 mill has been used for lab milling to assess rice milling performance as per the recommendation of the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS). However, as the FGIS is phasing out the use of the McGill #2 mill, there is a need to recalibrate milling assessments for standardized milling evaluation across various labs. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the milling performance of three laboratory mills (McGill #2, Satake, and Zaccaria mills) on the head rice yield (HRY), milled …

Chromium (Cr) is an extremely toxic metal for all living organisms and its concentration in the environment is constantly increasing due to human activities. Plants quickly absorb the Cr subsequently, it enters the human food chain and poses serious health issues. Chromium toxicity causes a serious reduction in plant growth by inducing oxidative damage and disturbing protein synthesis, enzyme activity, and nutrient uptake. Plants use diverse mechanisms to mitigate the Cr toxicity however, they are inadequate against higher concentrations of Cr. Thus is essential to diminish Cr toxicity and increase the ability of plants to tolerate Cr stress. Nano-particles (NPs) …

Drought represents a major global threat to the environment, thus leading to food insecurity. Transcription factors (TFs) have a significant role in regulating the expression of stress-related genes. TALE genes, a type of TF, are known to regulate important biological processes like the maintenance of shoot apical meristems and root formation in plants. In this study, 35 TALE genes were identified and they were found to be categorized into KNOX-like homeodomain (KNOX) and BLH/BELL-like subfamilies in Phaseolus vulgaris according to the phylogenetic analysis. The detailed characterization of PvTALE genes using in silico analyzes further showed that segmental duplications predominate in …

In wheat and barleyproduction, the profitability of cultivation heavily depends on the management of cyst nematodes (CNs), especially on Heteroderaavenae, H. filipjevi, and H. latipons. In this study, field surveys were conducted in wheat and barley cultivation systems of Uşak Provinceto reveal the presence and diversity of PPNs. In total, 80 wheat and barley fields were surveyed, and samples (soil and root) wereprocessed for the isolation and identification of PPNs. The PPN genera were identified to the species level based on morphologicaland morphometric characters. CNs …

Mixing two or more essential oils (EOs) may increase effectiveness of mango anthracnose control. In this study, EOs from a wide range of plant materials were hydro-distilled and chemically characterized. EOs were tested against in vitro growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. EOs with the highest antifungal toxicity were selected for the interactive experiments. The results showed that orange had the highest extraction yield (4.94%), followed by lemon, pomelo, citronella, turmeric, ginger, lemongrass (LG), cinnamon bark (CB), cinnamon leaf (CL) and basil. Trans-cinnamaldehyde was the most abundant compound of CB (91.3%) and CL (94.1%) EO. Limonene was principle constituent of orange (97%), …

Combined Physiological And Biochemical Analysis And Molecular Biotechnology For Atrazine Residue Reduction In Soybeans, Fenglan Hu, Yan Ding
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
To address the problem of atrazine residue in soybeans affecting the ecological environment and human health, in the presentstudy it is proposed to combine the bioorganic fertilizer DNBF10 and the highly efficient degrading bacterial strain AT-b3 with themagnetic biochar carrier MBC to form a novel DMBC-P bioremediation technology. The results indicated that the DMBC-P technologycould effectively reduce the residual amount of atrazine in soybeans and significantly enhance their growth and physiological indexes bypromoting atrazine degradation and phosphorus utilization and reducing oxidative stress. At the physiological and biochemical levels,DNBF10 significantly alleviated atrazine-induced oxidative stress, reducing the IBRv2 values to 1.84 and …

Controlled pollination, involving the transfer of pollen from Tagnanan Tall palm (male parent) to the Malayan Yellow or Red dwarf (female parent) is essential for producing MATAG coconut hybrids. However, the pollen from Tagnanan Tall (TAGT), usedin hybridization, has been reported to have a germination percentage of less than 40%. This is further complicated by Tagnanan Tall varieties varying in color, TAGT Orange, TAGT Gold, and TAGT Green. TAGT Orange is claimed to have lower pollen viability than TAGT Gold and Green. Hence, a study was conducted to compare inflorescence characteristics, pollen yield, size, viability, and vigor of three Tagnanan …
Bioethanol Yield Of The Sorghum × Sudangrass Hybrid Under Arid And Semiaridconditions: Nitrogen Dose Effects, Orthogonal Comparisons, And Component Analyses, Hali̇t Tutar
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The sorghum x sudangrass hybrid is highly significant as a biofuel crop due to its high biomass production, drought tolerance, ability to adapt to various climatic conditions, and high sugar content in its stems. This research aimed to determine the effects of six different nitrogen dose treatments on ethanol yield, yield parameters, and fertilizer use relationships in sorghum x sudangrass hybrid plants at two locations in 2021 and 2022. The experiment was established according to the randomized block design with three replicates. Nitrogen treatments were applied as N0 (0 kg da-1), N5 (5 kg da-1), N10 (10 kg da-1), N15 …

IMPORTANCE: Health disparities among racial and ethnic minoritized populations, particularly for cancer mortality rates, remain a major public health concern. Men from underrepresented backgrounds (Black and Hispanic men, specifically) face the pervasive effects of discrimination in their daily lives, which also contribute to the complex associations among allostatic load (a marker of chronic stress), educational opportunities, and elevated risks of cancer mortality.
OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the associations among educational attainment, allostatic load, and cancer mortality risk among men.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This is a retrospective cohort analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a nationally …
