Notes On The Future Possibilities Of Engaged Anthropological Research: Why Decolonizing Anthropology Needs Black Diasporic Feminist Theory And Methodologies, Meryleen Mena Aug 2024

Notes On The Future Possibilities Of Engaged Anthropological Research: Why Decolonizing Anthropology Needs Black Diasporic Feminist Theory And Methodologies, Meryleen Mena

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

While in the past decade there have been more ethnographic accounts that shed light on minoritized stories and demystify the specific challenges that women and femmes experience during their research, much is desired to prepare students and junior scholars from marginalized identities for fieldwork research. Reflecting on a moment of precarity in the context of pre-impeachment São Paulo, I explain why the integration of Black diasporic feminist thought, method, and praxis is critical to further decolonizing efforts in anthropology. Beyond reflection, this narrative calls for sustained politically active engagement to establish an anthropology of liberation.

Mental Health Stigma Related To Depression And Suicidal Behavior In Korean-Americans, Soo Min Kim Aug 2024

Mental Health Stigma Related To Depression And Suicidal Behavior In Korean-Americans, Soo Min Kim

Student Theses

Despite the surge of the Korean population within the United States, the Korean-American population is significantly underrepresented in research when observed separately from other Asian groups. The Republic of Korea has had the highest suicide rate within the OECD nations for well over a decade (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development), and evidence suggests that the risk of suicidality may extend to Koreans living abroad (Kung, 2018). There is also evidence of high prevalence of depressive symptoms in Korean-Americans (Bernstein et al., 2011). In addition, Koreans are consistently demonstrated to hold stigmatizing beliefs about mental illness, however, very little research …

A Multiagency Approach To Animal Hoarding In Central Iowa, Gary W. Rasmussen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This research explored animal hoarding in Iowa using the qualitative method with the resource dependency theory and a case study approach. These cases were studied using multiple sources of information, from media reports in initial locating cases to court documents, to examine the results of each case. It examined how different sized law enforcement agencies’ investigations into these cases impacted the outcomes of the cases in sentencing and the use of mental health evaluations and treatments. It also explored the efficacy of how different sized law enforcement agencies investigated animal hoarding cases. The law enforcement agencies were divided into two …

Law enforcement officers frequently encounter challenges when interacting with mentally ill individuals, often resulting in negative outcomes. In this generic qualitative study, the attitudes, decision making process, and behaviors of law enforcement officers in such interactions were investigated, with a focus on identifying facilitators and barriers to peaceful interactions. Additionally, the goal was to explore how police officer training could be improved to enhance outcomes in dealing with mentally ill individuals. Using a generic qualitative approach, data was collected through in-depth individual interviews and analysis of relevant documents from police forces. Participants, selected through snowball sampling from Police Departments, shared …

New Geographies Of Crime? Cybercrime, Southern Criminology And Diversifying Research Agendas, Tim Hall, Richard Yarwood Aug 2024

New Geographies Of Crime? Cybercrime, Southern Criminology And Diversifying Research Agendas, Tim Hall, Richard Yarwood

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper argues that reconsidering the disciplinary significance of the geographies of crime is timely. It has three aims. First, it identifies recent developments in the geographical study of crime, arguing that they both challenge and extend its intellectual traditions. Second, using the example of cybercrime, it identifies new forms of crime that deserve scrutiny by geographers. Third, it draws on ideas of Southern criminology to identify how research agendas can be diversified to advance how geographers study crime. In doing so it proposes that geographers’ renewed interest in crime over recent decades is appropriately labelled ‘new geographies of crime’.

Examining Executive Functions And Cognitive Emotion Regulation As Pathways From Childhood Adversity To Learning Effectiveness And Subsequent Functional Impairment In College Students, Fayth Walbridge Aug 2024

Examining Executive Functions And Cognitive Emotion Regulation As Pathways From Childhood Adversity To Learning Effectiveness And Subsequent Functional Impairment In College Students, Fayth Walbridge

Dissertations

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) refer to childhood abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction that impact later behavioral and physical health, academic, and occupational outcomes (Felitti et al., 1998; Metzler et al., 2017). Prior, studies have more recently shown that ACEs predict deficits in executive functions (Lund et., 2022; Wilson, 2020) and emotional regulation (Badour & Feldner, 2013) and these variables have been found to impact the relation between ACEs and multiple domains of functioning (e.g., psychosocial, behavioral, physical health; Boles, 2021; Cameron et al., 2018; Rudenstine et al., 2019; Trossman et al., 2020). However, no known study has simultaneously examined executive …

Justice Theater In The Criminal Law Curriculum, Gregory Brazeal Aug 2024

Justice Theater In The Criminal Law Curriculum, Gregory Brazeal

Cardozo Law Review

For the last half-century, law students have been required to take a criminal law course that ostensibly trains them to think critically about the justifications for criminal punishment. The same students have then gone on to serve as central actors in a system of mass incarceration that millions of Americans today view as profoundly unjust.

How did this happen?

A number of legal scholars, notably including Alice Ristroph in her 2020 Article “The Curriculum of the Carceral State,” have argued that the traditional criminal law curriculum has played a role in creating and reproducing the practices of mass incarceration. This …

Ticket Punch: The Consequences Of Fare Evasion Enforcement In New York City Subways, Sheyla A. Delgado, Gina Moreno, Fidel L. Osorio, Jeffrey A. Butts

Publications and Research

Researchers at the John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center studied transit fare evasion in New York City subway stations from 2018 to 2023 as part of the NYPD's Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative. Analyzing fare evasion alongside arrest data and neighborhood characteristics, the study found no significant link between fare enforcement and overall arrest rates. However, fare evasion enforcement was concentrated in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, highlighting the influence of social factors on public safety practices.

The Potential Value Of The Mcmi-Iv And Pid-5 In Physical Violence Risk Assessments, Courtney Tindell Aug 2024

The Potential Value Of The Mcmi-Iv And Pid-5 In Physical Violence Risk Assessments, Courtney Tindell

Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to explore and identify factors from two common personality measures, the Personality Inventory for the DSM-5 (PID-5) and Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-IV (MCMI-IV), to aid in the prediction of lifetime physical violence. Contemporary violence risk assessments center around structured professional judgment, which often includes risk management factors. The MCMI-IV was developed to provide insight into an individual’s motivations, needs, and behaviors based on their personality type. Thus, the MCMI-IV was thought to have the potential to provide unique insight into treatment protocols for violence reduction and prevention. Based on previous research and theory, four facet and two …

Stockholm Syndrome And Divorce-Related Decision Making Of The Abused Spouse, Simela Sidiropoulou Aug 2024

Stockholm Syndrome And Divorce-Related Decision Making Of The Abused Spouse, Simela Sidiropoulou

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Knowledge of the challenges faced by domestic violence victims with Stockholm Syndrome (SS) symptoms during divorce was limited at the time of the current study. Previous findings supported frequent occurrence of doubts during divorce proceedings due to SS, with negative effects on victims’ well-being after separation. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate victims’ decision making processes affected by SS features. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with six mental health providers treating victims with SS symptoms during divorce proceedings. Interpretive phenomenological analysis was applied to identify vital experiences through the perspective of therapists. Analysis determined four themes. …

Gender Stereotyping In An Agricultural Sample, Andrea Fink-Armold Aug 2024

Gender Stereotyping In An Agricultural Sample, Andrea Fink-Armold

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A vast wealth of social psychological research conducted over half a century has demonstrated the consequences of gender stereotypes. However, this research has significant limitations. Namely, generalizability outside of academia and the effects of social change. This study examined a non-academic population that has recently experienced significant gender role redistribution to overcome these limitations. Utilizing a full-cycle research approach consisting of both ethnographic and experimental methods, I examined three research questions: 1) how do gender stereotypes manifest within rural agricultural communities? 2) how is women’s increased participation in agriculture related to changes in gender stereotype use? and 3) how do …

Preparing Anti-Racist Teachers: A Case Study Of Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions Of Racism And Program Coherence In Equity-Centered Teacher Preparation, Mildred Joyner Aug 2024

Preparing Anti-Racist Teachers: A Case Study Of Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions Of Racism And Program Coherence In Equity-Centered Teacher Preparation, Mildred Joyner

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This case study explored the perceptions preservice teachers had regarding racism in educational contexts, how those perceptions were shaped by their teacher education program, and to what extent their teacher education program had coherence in preparing anti-racist teachers. Within the context of a large, minority serving institution in the Southwest preparing teachers for one of the most racially, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse districts in the country, the need to prepare anti-racist teachers who are able to recognize and remedy opportunity gaps for multi-marginalized students is evident. Because little research has focused on the perceptions and lived experiences preservice teachers have …

Ethnic Differences In Parenting Beliefs: Discipline, General Welfare And Protection, And Negative Parenting Practices, Rachel Johnson Jul 2024

Ethnic Differences In Parenting Beliefs: Discipline, General Welfare And Protection, And Negative Parenting Practices, Rachel Johnson

ETD Collection

Prior research reveals significant ethnic variations in parenting behaviors and beliefs. Despite widespread knowledge of the adverse effects of harsh parenting, the factors influencing support for such practices among different ethnic groups remain underexplored. This gap in the research highlights a need to investigate parenting beliefs across ethnic groups, particularly concerning discipline, meeting behavioral expectations, and children’s welfare and safety within the context of support for harsh parenting. Utilizing Parent Development Theory and the APA’s Multicultural Guidelines, this study analyzed archival data from the Parent Behavior Importance Questionnaire-Third Edition (PBIQ-3) to investigate ethnic differences in parenting beliefs, focusing on discipline, …

Perceptions Of Using Multiple Measures For Student Placement At Rural Virginia Community Colleges, Whitney Bowling Jul 2024

Perceptions Of Using Multiple Measures For Student Placement At Rural Virginia Community Colleges, Whitney Bowling

Ed.D. Dissertations

Remedial courses have been part of the college landscape in the United States since at least the 1800s when nearly 250,000 students were placed into remedial courses. Traditionally, students who enrolled in remedial courses were placed into that course solely based on one test score. Students who enrolled in traditional remedial courses were more likely to not graduate than their peers placed into college-level English and Mathematics courses. This research aims to understand the rural Virginia community college English and mathematics professors’ perceptions of implementing and using multiple measures to place students into first-year English and mathematics courses. The data …

Sex Work, Antitrafficking, And Mobility, Simanti Dasgupta Jul 2024

Sex Work, Antitrafficking, And Mobility, Simanti Dasgupta

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

With the HIV/AIDS epidemic gripping the world in the 1990s and the resurgence of the antitrafficking discourse in the 2000s, the sex work/abolitionist debate took center stage. Proponents of sex work uphold the labor and livelihood paradigm based on consent; the abolitionists, on the other hand, dismiss sex work as work to posit prostitution as the paradigmatic example of patriarchal violence toward women. The latter routinely conflate sex work with trafficking, and the former sharply demarcates them. Above all, this debate poses a stubborn ideological divide among feminists with serious policy implications for both the worker and the victim, nationally …

Criminal Activities As Threats To Security In The Caribbean, Marika Dawkins-Cavazos

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This chapter presents an overview of the main criminal activities posing threats to security in the Caribbean region. How best to assess Caribbean security realities, the types of security threats, and the strategies employed to combat such threats in the region that are influenced by its strategic location and proximity to the United States are discussed. Information on criminal activities came from various government reports, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, news reports, and articles. The overall evidence suggests that criminal activities in the region undercut the law and weaken socio-economic and political stability that subsequently threaten Caribbean …

Pathways To Social Mobility: Examining Trades As A Career Path For Formerly Incarcerated Individuals, June Jenkins Jul 2024

Pathways To Social Mobility: Examining Trades As A Career Path For Formerly Incarcerated Individuals, June Jenkins

Dissertations and Theses

Obtaining stable, paid employment is crucial for successful reentry into the community after incarceration, however, formerly incarcerated individuals face extensive barriers when entering the workforce. Trades may present a uniquely attainable career path for this population due to relatively low barriers to entry. To date, there is a lack of research investigating experience-based perspectives on the viability of trades training programs and trades careers in facilitating prisoner reentry. This study employs semi-structured qualitative interviews to investigate perspectives on trades as a career path for formerly incarcerated individuals as well as barriers to accessing and attending trades training programs. Interviewees include …

Considering What Counts: The Fall And Rise Of Maternal Mortality Rates, Joel Best, Keith R. Johnson Jul 2024

Considering What Counts: The Fall And Rise Of Maternal Mortality Rates, Joel Best, Keith R. Johnson

Numeracy

Twentieth-century medical advances reduced the rate of maternal mortality by more than 99 percent. Yet recently we hear that there has been a substantial increase in the maternal mortality rate. This increase has been caused by contemporary researchers adopting much broader definitions for what counts as cases of maternal mortality. This example illustrations the importance of definitions in shaping statistics.

A Quantitative Study On Restorative Justice Programs And Socioeconomic Status On Gun Violence Prevention In Urban Schools, Debra Kaye Long Jul 2024

A Quantitative Study On Restorative Justice Programs And Socioeconomic Status On Gun Violence Prevention In Urban Schools, Debra Kaye Long

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A gun violence epidemic had been a topic of conversation in America's schools in the form of mass shootings, homicides, nonfatal attacks, accidental discharges, and weapon suicides. The significance of this issue lies in its effects on student safety, well-being, and educational outcomes. A logistic regression model was used to assess the impact of free or reduced-price lunch (SES) and the adoption of restorative justice practices on the likelihood of firearm incidents in schools. Using social learning theory and trauma-informed care, this quantitative study used surveys from 7,290 individuals to analyze these correlations. The findings revealed significant reductions in gun-related …

Singapore Convention: Should Indonesia Ratify It?, Ahmad Rifa'i, Dimas Ramadhansyah

Indonesian Journal of International Law

As cross-border trading develops, there is an increasing need for an effective dispute resolution system to solve disputes on business transactions. Mediation is a well-established method of efficient alternative dispute resolution that was recently internationally recognized under a specific treaty. The United Nations General Assembly took a resolution to adopt the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Resulting from Mediation (“Singapore Convention”). The Indonesian government has tried to boost foreign investment, but such efforts have been delayed due to a legal enforcement issue, which requires a legal reform to provide certainty for investors by providing a seamless and internationally recognized …

“Ain’T Nuthin Wrong With Being A Trojan Man”: Discourse On Safe-Sex In Rap Music, 1985-1995, Christopher D. Rounds, Kareem R. Muhammad Jul 2024

“Ain’T Nuthin Wrong With Being A Trojan Man”: Discourse On Safe-Sex In Rap Music, 1985-1995, Christopher D. Rounds, Kareem R. Muhammad

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

This essay methodically tracks references to safe-sex in rap music and analyzes their implications. Reviewing over 3,000 songs from 1985 to 1995, the authors found that the tone and messages of these references differed substantially. While many artists celebrated risky and indiscriminate sexual behavior– their work marred by a misogny and homophobia that often stigmatized persons living with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)– many other artists portrayed safe-sex in a positive light, either as a responsible approach to sexual behavior, or as a pragmatic tool of urban survival. These songs normalized the use of condoms, and educated listeners by raising awareness …

Through The Digital Lens: Examining Beliefs About Online Child Sexual Abuse, Kendhyl Delacour Jul 2024

Through The Digital Lens: Examining Beliefs About Online Child Sexual Abuse, Kendhyl Delacour

Student Theses

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a global societal problem. Advances in technology and widespread Internet access have shifted much of the focus and prevention policies toward online CSA (OCSA). Initially, internet crimes against children were seen as “stranger danger” offenses, where the perpetrator was unknown to the victim. However, recent studies show that online sex offenses are mostly committed by individuals known to the victim. While existing literature has explored how the “stranger danger myth” shapes public perceptions about in-person offenders, little is known about public beliefs regarding OCSA within the context of the stranger danger myth. This study aimed …
