College can impact mental health for all students, especially those involved in a college sport. Sports require significant time dedication that decreases time available for students to be involved in other activities such as academics or leisure which can lead to increased stress. This study focuses on investigating the impact level of competition and location of school may have on student athletes’ mental health in the state of West Virginia. A mixed methods self-report survey with a total of 75 questions was administered online via Qualtrics software. Quantitative data was analyzed using Stats IQ feature on Qualtrics and qualitative data …

Law, Language, And Authority: The Algorithmic Turn, Amanda Turnbull Jul 2024

Law, Language, And Authority: The Algorithmic Turn, Amanda Turnbull

PhD Dissertations

Law is formed by language and law utilizes language. Law is also like language in that it consists of social rules that aid in the structuring of society. From the time that we first put language into writing, we have been invested in the technologizing of language. There is a clear trajectory of our interest in having machines do things with language that we would otherwise do ourselves. This dissertation investigates how law’s relationship with language changes with the use of algorithmically driven technologies, and correspondingly, the consequences for the changing nature of authority since the use of language in …

Latinos' Intimate Partner Violence, Abuse, And Interventions: Developing A Latcrit Analysis And Critique, Adrian Luis Manriquez, Eric S. Mankowski Jul 2024

Latinos' Intimate Partner Violence, Abuse, And Interventions: Developing A Latcrit Analysis And Critique, Adrian Luis Manriquez, Eric S. Mankowski

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The paper utilizes LatCrit and critical psychology perspectives in order to review and critique the literature on Latinos' intimate partner violence and abuse and intervention programs. LatCrit theories are described and reviewed, and then applied to the literature on IPV predictors among Latinos. The review demonstrates that the research literature on the predictors, correlates, and antecedents of Latino males' IPV behaviors focuses largely on the individual level of analysis, and consequently suffers from three main limitations: use of deficit models in research; decontextualized assessment and evaluations of IPV; neglect of higher levels of analysis influencing IPV in Latinx communities. Implications …

Exploring Associations Among Identity, Cognitive Flexibility, Intersectional Awareness, And Empathy, Brianna Heuser Jul 2024

Exploring Associations Among Identity, Cognitive Flexibility, Intersectional Awareness, And Empathy, Brianna Heuser

ETD Collection

Growing research has supported the need to incorporate an intersectional perspective in psychology, both in terms of research and clinical practice. The current investigation aimed to expand on current literature and used an intersectional approach to understanding empathy, specifically focusing on self-identification with stigmatized identities, intersectional awareness, and cognitive flexibility. Although prior research has investigated these variables individually, the current study examined the factors simultaneously and proposed a serial mediation model to explain the relationship between the variables. In particular, the serial mediation model suggested the association between the number of stigmatized identities an individual identifies with and their level …

Criminality & Imprisonment Policy Lessons From Across The Pond: Comparing Europe And The United States, Jonathan Link Jul 2024

Criminality & Imprisonment Policy Lessons From Across The Pond: Comparing Europe And The United States, Jonathan Link

Florida Journal of International Law

In the wake of the death of George Floyd and the national and international outcry for racial justice that followed, it seems inevitable that criminal justice reform in America is on the horizon. U.S. President Joe Biden has recognized that there “absolutely” is systemic racism in law enforcement.1 He went on to argue that the U.S. prison system should “turn into a rehabilitation system, not . . . just punishment.” In these interview statements and various other campaign speeches, Presidential debates, and Presidential press conferences since, the President has made clear that the way that the U.S. punishes crime needs …

The United States As An Essential Forum For Litigating And Chronicling The Genocide In Rwanda, Matthew C. Kane Jul 2024

The United States As An Essential Forum For Litigating And Chronicling The Genocide In Rwanda, Matthew C. Kane

Florida Journal of International Law

Over several months in 1994, hell descended on Rwanda. The country and its people experienced unfathomable tragedy, the likes of which the rest of the world simply cannot comprehend. Since the Rwandese Patriotic Front (RPF) seized power from the architects of the genocide, the country has made significant steps in terms of nation building. Rwanda has experienced tremendous economic growth and is widely considered to have one of the lowest levels of official corruption on the continent. The people themselves are different—perhaps most fundamentally, the majority of the current population had not yet been born when death became routine. Yet …

Toward Queer Potentialities In Child And Youth Care, Bobbi Ali Zaman, Ben Anderson-Nathe Jul 2024

Toward Queer Potentialities In Child And Youth Care, Bobbi Ali Zaman, Ben Anderson-Nathe

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Arguably, from the invention of adolescence at the beginning of the 20th century, developmental theory has served as the foundation of disciplinary study and professional practice with children and youth across the global West. Despite their founders’ assertions that development is culturally constructed, in educational and youth work practice contexts stage-based trajectories of normative human growth are largely erroneously accepted as ahistorical, apolitical, naturally occurring, and universally applicable. This paper presents critiques of developmentalism from historical, reconceptualist, and queer perspectives, calling into question the underlying principles of normalcy and abnormality that run through the developmental project. We pay particular attention …

All Stalk And No Action: A Proposal For Arkansas Gps Stalking Legislation, Erin Wadley Jul 2024

All Stalk And No Action: A Proposal For Arkansas Gps Stalking Legislation, Erin Wadley

Arkansas Law Notes

The expanding availability of GPS and internet of things (IoT) devices has equipped abusers with more tools to intensify and broaden the scope of domestic abuse tactics, “threatening the progress advocates have made in the past thirty years and creating novel dangers for survivors.” These devices “allow abusers to overcome geographic and spatial boundaries that would have otherwise prevented them from monitoring, controlling, harassing, and threatening survivors.” Thus, this Comment strongly urges the Arkansas State Legislature to enact a law to protect victims, provide justice, and preventatively deter the tracking of private citizens through GPS tracking while being broad enough …

Mental Health In South Georgia: Another Area Of Disadvantage For An Underserved Region, But Pandemic-Related Policy Changes Suggest Pathways Forward, Shelly Yankovskyy, Anne Price

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

Mental health is a contemporary issue of key concern among academics and policymakers, especially due to the exacerbation of mental health issues with the COVID-19 pandemic. Increases in mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, suicide, opioid overdose, and youth depression are the subject of research and governmental-allocated grant funding and new policies have been put in place at multiple institutional levels. We utilize a political economy framework to understand the incidence of mental health disorders and explore how new programs and policies have been implemented in Georgia to address and support mental health at various institutional levels, such as …

Self-Harm In Female Youth With Undiagnosed Adhd: Implementing American Academy Of Pediatrics Screening Guidelines, Roselie M. Woodard

Dissertations

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. If undiagnosed or untreated, ADHD can lead to severe psychosocial issues such as academic failure, substance abuse, unplanned pregnancy, and incarceration. The financial burden in the U.S. from diagnostic errors creates an immense, rising fiscal impact. Early diagnosis and management are crucial to prevent these complications.

Females with ADHD, particularly those with the inattentive subtype, often face diagnostic challenges due to symptom masking and over-compensation. This results in poorer cognitive functioning and self-esteem compared to males with ADHD. ADHD is linked to autonomic nervous …

Incarcerated individuals in the United States have a high disease burden. Moreover, most of them are released from incarceration without health coverage. The problem is that most incarcerated people in Maryland return to the community from incarceration without health coverage and cannot access health care. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how Medicaid enrollment staff and managers of the Medicaid program perceive the experiences and challenges of justice-involved individuals in navigating the Medicaid system in Maryland. The study was grounded in the behavioral model for vulnerable populations. The main research question aimed at understanding how the enrollment …

Divine Retribution, Anna Payne Jul 2024

Divine Retribution, Anna Payne

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Sexual abuse has always been an issue in all cultures throughout the world and history. Easton et al. delved into the problems of barriers to disclosing child sexual abuse with 460 male participants which showed that 61.7% of them reported CSA at the hands of a priest. As that study was conducted, Helsel and McCormack tackled the effects of CSA on the nervous system and psyche. While religion is used as a coping mechanism, it is also a tool for maltreatment from clergy sexually abusing children to parents seeking ways to rid the child of demons. There have been over …

Disasters And Disorganization: The Flood Of 2022 In Eastern Kentucky And The Struggles That Linger, Justin Hutchens Jul 2024

Disasters And Disorganization: The Flood Of 2022 In Eastern Kentucky And The Struggles That Linger, Justin Hutchens

Online Theses and Dissertations

In July of 2022, a generational flood washed out many small communities across 13 Kentucky counties in Central Appalachia. This disaster, like previous disasters, uncovered structural and socioeconomic issues perpetuated by those in power that were hidden from the outside world. Minimal news coverage of the flood damage created the impression that aid has been substantial, and towns have been rebuilt. This ethnographic research, carried out in 2023 in Letcher County, reveals extensive damage and long-term consequences for the region. Through a series of interviews with residents of the county, this paper examines the disaster, the structural context in which …

A Systematic Review Of Trauma-Informed Care In Applied Behavior Analysis, Staci Archibald Jul 2024

A Systematic Review Of Trauma-Informed Care In Applied Behavior Analysis, Staci Archibald

Theses

Although the use of trauma-informed care (TIC) has been featured in the delivery of different human services fields, its integration in applied behavior analysis (ABA) is scarce. The purpose of this research was to determine how many empirical studies include both principles of behavior analysis as well as TIC. The findings imply that, while research in this area is very limited, including TIC in ABA may improve treatment outcomes, particularly for people with complicated trauma histories and many restrictive measures. This review revealed a significant literature gap regarding specific frameworks and guidelines for effectively integrating TIC into ABA practices. Addressing …

Federal agencies, researchers, and professional associations have addressed concerns regarding the growing number of children who are exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma. In response, they have recommended adoption of trauma-informed care (TIC) that provides care to children. However, there were mixed results in terms of successfully implementing TIC at places of employment. The purpose of this quantitative survey study was to investigate whether Registered Play Therapist™ (RPTs™) experiences, perceptions, and knowledge predicted their attitudes regarding TIC. This study involved exploring perceptions of RPTs™ regarding effectiveness of implementing TIC. The trauma-informed systems model guided this study. Research questions …

Seguir Adelante: A Qualitative Exploration Of Latino Farmworkers' Work And Non-Work Resources, Faviola Robles Saenz

Dissertations and Theses

Precarious work sectors within the United States have relied on Black and Brown labor for many decades. More specifically, Latino immigrant workers have been an exploited community within many dangerous workforces but especially within the agricultural industry. They are a crucial population for the labor and economy of the U.S., yet Latino farmworkers report feeling expendable, being discriminated against, and being exposed to hazardous working conditions. Due to these experiences, scholars have explored the role non-work resources have in providing support for this community, their social networks being especially beneficial for them. However, research on the links between their work …

The Integration Of Social Work Values And Principles In Police Work, Dasha Rhodes, Taylor Geyton, Jam Ost

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Persisting social inequities and injustices were spotlighted in the United States in 2020 after the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. A particular focus on the interactions of police officers and non-violent community members rallied a call to reallocate funds to social services better equipped to handle such situations, aptly named #defundthepolice. Many called for the need and placement of social workers in police agencies to curtail the negative interactions witnessed between police officers and communities of color, specifically with Black Americans. Across the nation, social workers are not always employed or readily available in police organizations. Therefore, instilling …
