An Illustrated, Experiential Field Guide To Melbourne, Elissa Steil
Australia: Sustainability and Environmental Action
This paper documents the creation of a field guide designed to promote sustainability by encouraging connection and understanding of Melbourne's native environment. The guide features illustrations, distribution maps, and descriptions of their physical traits and traditional Aboriginal uses. The guide emphasizes accessibility for diverse audiences, using simple language and a balance of visuals and text to appeal to both beginners and experts in plant identification. Grounded in respect for the Traditional Owners of the land, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong/Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation, the project integrates traditional ecological knowledge to highlight Aboriginal approaches to environmental stewardship. MFA Theses Exhibitions Final Papers
View the Digital Exhibition of Seventeen Steps to Strategy
The concepts of design and branding have evolved significantly over time, becoming increasingly complex and interdisciplinary. Despite the general presence of the design field in contemporary society, specific definitions and practices in design often seem ambiguous to people not in the field. This thesis focuses on exploring the multifaceted nature of design within education, particularly as it relates to strategy and branding, and proposes a shift in perspective, namely regarding how young designers are taught to deal with conceptualization, research, and project development related to brands while in university. Through research …

Regulating Deepfakes: An Indian Perspective, Shinu Vig
Journal of Strategic Security
Deepfakes are a growing concern throughout the world including India. Deepfakes can be used for several purposes, both innocuous or malicious. In India, several problems related to regulation of deepfakes have emerged. This paper makes an examination of current legal challenges posed by deepfakes as well as solutions in India that can be repurposed to address these challenges, including intellectual property laws, criminal laws, and the right to privacy. While these existing laws can be used to address certain aspects of the deep fake problem, there is an increasing recognition that specific legislations and regulations addressing deep fakes and synthetic …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The goal of this study is to explore productive ways to engage students in groupwork using dynamic geometry tasks in online synchronous classroom environments. In particular, we aim to understand the social, mathematical, and technological aspects of student collaboration in virtual spaces. We analyzed how three online groups of students collaboratively worked on dynamic geometry tasks of exploring interactive kaleidoscope applets in Desmos and producing visual representations and written descriptions of geometric transformations used in the applets. The students shared their screens in Zoom as they shared their findings and discussed how to draw and write to represent the kaleidoscopes. …

The humanities have the potential to enhance STEM curriculum in career-oriented professional degree programs. As part of a larger college-wide initiative to develop interdisciplinary curricula, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded a grant to New York City College of Technology to explore the relationship between the humanities and career-focused degree programs in STEM departments. This article describes the design and implementation of coursework that bridges the curricular divides between humanities disciplines and technical or career-focused disciplines by bringing the humanities to bear on science and technology-oriented courses. Specifically, the humanities served to improve technical skills for students in …
The Semiotics Of Psychological States In International Players' Face Expressions During Qatar World Cup 2022, Mohammed Sami A-Assadi, Iman Mingher Obied
The Semiotics Of Psychological States In International Players' Face Expressions During Qatar World Cup 2022, Mohammed Sami A-Assadi, Iman Mingher Obied
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
This study aims at applying the social semiotic theory of universal micro-expressions in international players' facial expressions during Qatar World Cup 2022. The research analyzes four basic different facial expressions (sadness, happiness, anger and surprise) at the level of similarity and some other emotions at the level of difference. Relying on Ekman's model of semiotic micro-expressions of emotion, the findings of the data analysis show that the social semiotic approach is highly effective in showing how emotions in sports contexts can be revealed and indicated through facial expressions of players and how there are similarities and differences among them reflecting …
Distracted Driving: Identification, Contributing Factors, And Safety Countermeasures, Ahmed Sajid Hasan
Distracted Driving: Identification, Contributing Factors, And Safety Countermeasures, Ahmed Sajid Hasan
Theses and Dissertations
Distracted driving is a hazardous behavior responsible for 25% of all fatal traffic crashes in New Jersey. While traditional methods such as surveys, videos, and simulations have been used to identify and evaluate distracted driving events, these approaches primarily provide cross-sectional data that fails to capture the true rate of distraction on the road. This study addresses this limitation by collecting longitudinal data on distracted driving events across selected corridors in New Jersey. A data collection team continuously drove through these corridors, manually counting and video recording driver distraction events. The collected data was then analyzed to assess the significance …

Ai-Based Assistive Technologies & People With Disabilities: Privacy At Risk, Jasmine Madaan
Ai-Based Assistive Technologies & People With Disabilities: Privacy At Risk, Jasmine Madaan
LLM Theses
This thesis follows three research questions. First, it explores the potential privacy risks that people with disabilities (PWDs) face in the face of incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) in assistive technologies (ATs). It then investigates reasons that exacerbate PWDs’ vulnerability to such potential privacy risks. Since legal literature in the context of AI-based ATs is limited, this thesis adopts a combination of multidisciplinary and traditional legal doctrinal research by studying legal literature and empirical research in other disciplines. Lastly, the thesis reviews the current Canadian data protection legal framework to examine if there is any provision specifically addressing PWDs or …
Anime: A Qualitative Study Exploring Miyazaki’S Influence On Fans And Fan Art Through The Perspective Of Visual Communication Within The Sociocultural And Cybernetic Traditions, Lynda C. Welch
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Visual communication has been an acknowledged form of human communication for millennia, dating back to prehistoric cave paintings. Aristotle noted its importance, although it lost its prominence as a recognized communicative form until the 20th century, when scholars such as Innis, McLuhan, Postman, and Foss expanded upon its importance. This identification was a crucial point in visual communication, heralding the birth of comics, film, television, animation, and Japanese anime. Lamarre, McCloud, and McLuhan were a few theorists who grasped the significance of animation and visual communication, although this recognition did not extend to fan art and the visual communication possibilities …
