Environmental Sensitivity Index (Esi) Feasibility Study Of All-Hazards Indices Expansion, Research Planning, Inc Sep 2024

Environmental Sensitivity Index (Esi) Feasibility Study Of All-Hazards Indices Expansion, Research Planning, Inc

Coastal Response Research Center

Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) products are developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support planning for and responding to coastal oil and chemical spills. ESI data describe a variety of coastal resources that are at risk from oil spills that include sensitive shorelines (e.g., marshes, tidal flats), biological resources (e.g., birds, shellfish beds), and human-use resources (e.g., public beaches, water intakes). ESI maps and datasets include shoreline types that are ranked according to their sensitivity to oil and chemical spills. This index was the original focus of ESI maps and has been a standard for industry and …

Development Of A Layered Unsupervised Classifier Of Plasma Regions And A Bootstrap-Ensemble Neural Network Bow Shock Mode, James Andrew Edmond Sep 2024

Development Of A Layered Unsupervised Classifier Of Plasma Regions And A Bootstrap-Ensemble Neural Network Bow Shock Mode, James Andrew Edmond

Doctoral Dissertations

The use of supervised methods in space science have demonstrated powerful capability in classification tasks, but purely unsupervised methods have been less utilized for the classification of spacecraft observations. We use a combination of unsupervised methods, being principal component analysis, self-organizing maps, and hierarchical agglomerative clustering, to classify THEMIS and MMS observations as having occurred in the magnetosphere, magnetosheath, or the solar wind. The resulting classification are validated visually by analyzing the distribution of classifications and studying individual time series as well as by comparison to the labeled dataset of a previous model, against which ours has an accuracy of …

Performance Evaluation And Integration Of Distortion Mitigation Methods For Fisheye Video Object Detection, John Benedict Du, Gian Paolo Mayuga, Maria Leonora Guico Sep 2024

Performance Evaluation And Integration Of Distortion Mitigation Methods For Fisheye Video Object Detection, John Benedict Du, Gian Paolo Mayuga, Maria Leonora Guico

Electronics, Computer, and Communications Engineering Faculty Publications

The distortion observed in fisheye cameras has proven to be a persistent challenge for numerous state-of-the-art object detection algorithms, instigating the development of various techniques aimed at mitigating this issue. This study aims to evaluate various methods for mitigating distortion in fisheye camera footage and their impact on video object detection accuracy and speed. Using Python, OpenCV, and third-party libraries, the researchers modified and optimized said methods for video input and created a framework for running and testing different distortion correction methods and object detection algorithm configurations. Through experimentation with different datasets, the study found that undistorting the image using …

Settling Dust, Unsettling Ground, Olivia Newroz Aug 2024

Settling Dust, Unsettling Ground, Olivia Newroz

Masters Theses

Understanding dust as a material system that blurs the line between ground and atmosphere, I developed a dust machine as a tool for making dust legible at the human scale. While the blurriness of ground is visualized at both particle and planetary scales, at the human scale, it becomes less evident. Drawing from Lisa’s Moffitt’s discussion of “environmental models”–that is, models that don’t merely simulate phenomena, in this case dust, but rather produce the underlying force itself––I produced visualizations of how dust, as both a grounded and atmospheric element, intertwines ground and weather across scales, through a cyclical process of …

Cyber Crime Against Women's Personal Data On Online Platforms And The Role Of Pdp Laws, Ambar Alimatur Rosyidah, Farah Fajriyah, Rahayu Rahayu Aug 2024

Cyber Crime Against Women's Personal Data On Online Platforms And The Role Of Pdp Laws, Ambar Alimatur Rosyidah, Farah Fajriyah, Rahayu Rahayu

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

The presence of online platforms such as financial technology lending platforms is like a double-edged knife for women. These platforms pave the way for restrictions on women accessing loans. However, the use of fintech poses risks to women. They become victims of cybercrime with the existence of desk collectors who collect online loans and the third party who use the women's data. This study aims to examine the cybercrime implications of using fintech experienced by women related to fintech lending and then explore the role, data protection, and scope of the PDP Law as a solution. This study uses Qualitative …

Pic-Wrap: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Terms In Online Contracting, Emily Smoot Aug 2024

Pic-Wrap: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Terms In Online Contracting, Emily Smoot

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Modern online contracts—often categorized as click-wrap, scroll-wrap, and browse-wrap agreements—are rarely read by users. Even if users attempt to read them, the use of long paragraphs and complex language creates a barrier for the average user to understand what they are agreeing to. Issues surrounding online contract formation have sparked litigation in recent years to determine the enforceability of these agreements. The current standard used by courts to determine the enforceability of online contact terms is whether the design of the interface would put the reasonably prudent user on inquiry notice of their existence. The standard of adequate notice has …

Examining School To Home Transference Of Behavioral Interventions Provided To Elementary Students With Autism, Andre Lamar Patterson Aug 2024

Examining School To Home Transference Of Behavioral Interventions Provided To Elementary Students With Autism, Andre Lamar Patterson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Parent–teacher collaboration is crucial for optimizing outcomes for students with autism spectrum disorder (SWAs). This qualitative study addressed perceptions among parents of elementary-aged SWAs regarding the lack of transfer of school-based behavioral skills to the home environment. Parental perceptions of the transfer of behavioral interventions, including applied behavior analysis (ABA), from school to home for SWAs aged 6–12 years were explored. Using a basic qualitative methodology, data were gathered using semi structured in-depth interviews of eight participants with elementary aged children with autism: Member checking, peer debriefing, and triangulation provided validation. Two major themes emerged: (a) the importance of regular …

Beyond Measures Of Speed & Accuracy: Evaluating Visualization Perception, Reasoning & Decision-Making, Melanie Bancilhon Aug 2024

Beyond Measures Of Speed & Accuracy: Evaluating Visualization Perception, Reasoning & Decision-Making, Melanie Bancilhon

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Visualizations have long been used to support decision-making across various fields. By transforming complex data into graphical representations, such as charts, graphs, and maps, visualizations are generally reputed to make information more accessible and comprehensible for all. While prior work demonstrates that visualizations can improve speed and accuracy across comprehension and analytical tasks, there lacks research on how they can benefit decision-making. Decision-making is a complex task which involves risk comprehension and rational thinking but also various heuristics and external factors. While research has shown that individual traits and situational factors can impact performance with visualizations, they have not been …
