General Education Primary Grade Teachers’ Experiences Using Instructional Practices With Gifted And Talented Students In Rural Schools, Shanna Michelle Foskey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed by this basic qualitative study was that primary grade general education teachers are challenged to use instructional practices that meet the learning needs of gifted and talented (GT) students in rural schools in the southeastern United States. The purpose of this study was to explore primary grade general education teachers’ challenges using instructional practices that meet the learning needs of GT students in rural schools in the southeastern US. The conceptual framework combined Gagne’s conditions for learning and Renzulli’s enrichment triad model. Two research questions guided the study in exploring teachers’ challenges in using instructional practices to …

Three Characters And Me(Me): Positioning Popular Culture To Unpack Emerging Teacher Identity, Gillian E. Mertens, Henry (Cody) C. Miller
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
In this article we narrate an instructional practice we implemented in two different teacher education courses that facilitated conversations about teacher identity through the use of fictional characters who were educators. This practice served two purposes in our course work: firstly, this activity presents students with an opportunity to demonstrate their media interests and career goals; secondly, this activity provides a quick, baseline assessment of how aspiring teachers view their profession and future practice. We detail student responses to this activity and consider how their choices of fictional educators fit into broader patterns we see in popular culture, specifically depictions …

Peril And Promise: Student Experiences Of Virtual Reality And Implications For Inclusive Social Justice Pedagogy, Michelle Vannatta
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Virtual reality (VR) is a fast-evolving technology rapidly being integrated into education and training in multiple sectors of society. As the use of VR spreads, it is important to critically analyze both its role in effective pedagogies and how students experience it. Virtual reality has extraordinary promise for deeply engaging students, and it also poses particular challenges for equitable and effective teaching of diverse students. This paper discusses students’ responses to a VR exercise and examines some of the complexities VR presents around racial justice, gender equity, and economic fairness. Virtual reality technology may be less effective and less comfortable …

Interactive Virtual Presence: A New Tool For Remote Healthcare, David C. Schwebel
Interactive Virtual Presence: A New Tool For Remote Healthcare, David C. Schwebel
Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
The COVID-19 pandemic transformed use of telemedicine for healthcare. Many healthcare objectives can be successfully delivered through traditional telemedicine platforms, and others must be delivered in person. Lying between those extremes is a subset of healthcare objectives that might benefit from use of interactive virtual presence, a form of augmented reality that can be delivered on standard smartphones to offer immersive presence as well as simultaneous voice and visual stimuli. Using interactive virtual presence, a healthcare provider can communicate both verbally and visually with a remotely-located patient, but also can interact with that patient through merged reality by pointing with …

Face Image Recognition By Using Some Dimension Reduction Algorithms And Logistic Regression, Sura Sabah Keiteb, Entsar Arebe Fadam
Face Image Recognition By Using Some Dimension Reduction Algorithms And Logistic Regression, Sura Sabah Keiteb, Entsar Arebe Fadam
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
Face recognition is a common technique for artificial intelligence and image processing in which machine-learning algorithms automatically recognize a person's face through a huge image collection or even from a live video since there is difficulty in detecting data when using different shots for the same person in a facial recognition system, it takes time to determine person's membership. Furthermore, when working with high-dimensional data, where the 2D-pixel values of facial images, can be computationally challenging, the face recognition problem gets harder, so the current research compares the dimensionality reduction techniques like the principal component analysis algorithm PCA, an unsupervised …

Unlocking Potential: Analyzing The Content, Style, Structure, And Interactivity Of Mesonets As Operational Dashboards, Savannah Olivas, Jeannette Sutton, Michele K. Olson
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
Emergency managers need data and information to make life-saving decisions on behalf of the public. Operational dashboards, if designed appropriately, can provide this information in a central location and reduce cognitive demands during decision-making. Mesonet websites can serve as a type of operational dashboard that has the potential to provide the meteorological data necessary for emergency managers to make decisions. In this study, we use quantitative content analysis to examine the content, style, structure, and interactivity of 18 Mesonet websites from across the contiguous United States. We find that Mesonet websites vary in the type and amount of content they …
Effects Of Retinal Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone On Reproductive Behavior And Retinal Activity In The Cichlid Fish, Astatotilapia Burtoni, Chase Anselmo
LSU Master's Theses
Many animals use visual signals to evade predators, forage for food, and communicate with conspecifics. Some animals that shift into and out of breeding stages, such as fish, can modulate their visual sensitivity to better adapt to changing internal and external conditions. Previous work in our lab demonstrated that females of the cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni have improved visual sensitivity when they enter reproductive readiness. However, little is known about how fish and vertebrates more broadly modulate visual sensitivity across their reproductive cycle. We hypothesized that the hormone and neuromodulator gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) could modulate visual sensitivity because GnRH is …

Diseñando El Cambio. El Activismo Gráfico Feminista De Sheila Levrant De Brettville, Mª Eugenia Blázquez Rodríguez
GDI.

The Urgency Of Official Non-Halal Labels In Restaurants As A Consumer Protection In Indonesia, Yudha Pratama Putra, Nurwahidin Nurwahidin, Nur Fatwa
Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies
Information about non-halal labels is regulated by Law No. 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Guarantees. Article 93 states that products originating from prohibited materials must include non-halal details in the form of images, writing, or the name of the material with a different color in the composition of the material, for example red. In 2014, the Head of the Halal Registration and Certification Center at the BPJPH Ministry of Religion explained that his party would regulate the use of non-halal labels for non-halal products in the Minister of Religion regulations. However, until now, this plan has not been realized. …

"You Want Me To Teach What?!": Emerging Technologies, Required Knowledge, And Pedagogical Practice, Rachel Bryson, Ryan Cheek, Sam Clem, Hannah Stevens
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
Being assigned to teach unfamiliar content is an experience that many technical communication (TC) instructors can relate to. In this experience report, four TC instructors describe their experiences teaching unfamiliar and emerging technology, providing takeaways for readers about how they might approach similar tasks, particularly when constrained by a lack of time and resources when teaching a class for the first time. The instructors had to adapt their pedagogical approaches to teach a range of technology and software. These approaches include building students' visual and rhetorical literacy, diving deep into ethics, explicitly teaching students how to learn, and humbly showing …

UBT International Conference
Design communicates thoughts, ideas, emotions, and narratives in a universal language. Cultural differences, however, have a big impact on how people view and understand design. Storytelling, usability, aesthetics, and symbolism are all impacted by the intricate relationships between culture and design. In a world growing more interconnected by the day, it is critical to recognize and comprehend the impact of cultural subtleties on design. Through the lens of cultural aesthetics, design is assessed. These aesthetics consist of fashion trends, color palettes, and design elements that are representative of specific civilizations. Aspects of design frequently have rich cultural meaning and symbolism. …

Citizen Or Professional: Exploring Heroic Moral Choice Motivations In Photojournalism, Kevin Moloney, Tong Li, Martin Smith-Rodden
Heroism Science
Photojournalists make serious and often heroic split-second decisions when covering scenes. One of the dilemmas they might encounter is the choice between humanitarianism, which favors the subject in need, versus professionalism, which focuses on telling the story. This exploratory study aims to understand the moral decision-making situations encountered by professional photojournalists and how they process decisions in these situations. We interviewed nine professional photojournalists and surveyed the moral intensity of the situations they encountered. The results identified three types of situations where photojournalists encounter citizen vs. professional moral dilemmas. We found that most participants situationally prioritized the subject’s needs and …
Hereditary Deafness And Society: The Quest For Ethical Awareness, Danielle Lavigne
Hereditary Deafness And Society: The Quest For Ethical Awareness, Danielle Lavigne
Society for American Sign Language Journal
An excellent study of genetics and deafness is Martha’s Vineyard, a small island off the Massachusetts coast that was once known to have a sizable deaf population. This community that prevailed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries relates many genetic concepts, giving insight as to why the deaf population was larger in proportion than that on the mainland. The paper will cover hereditary deafness in more depth than what has been discussed in the American Sign Language/Deaf Studies literature. This includes understanding the significance of population genetics. The paper also takes into consideration that many hearing residents of Martha’s Vineyard …
Fluidity Of Time, Phoebe Huey
Fluidity Of Time, Phoebe Huey
Theses
Fluidity of Time is a digital clock installation that uses particle simulations to symbolize the fluctuating nature of human emotions throughout the day. Inspired by the concept of entropy—the natural shift from order to disorder—the clock’s particle-based digits flow, collapse, and rebuild, mirroring emotional cycles. The project addresses the issue of disconnection in a post-pandemic, technology-driven world, aiming to captivate viewers and create shared experiences that foster community. Through experimentation in X-Particles, I developed fluid, life-like motion in a digital clock that engages viewers on both aesthetic and emotional levels. The installation received positive feedback for its mesmerizing and satisfying …

Exploring Saudi Arabian Teachers' Perceptions Of Smartboard Instruction For Students With Communication Disorders, Mohammed Alqahtani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Using smartboards with students with communication needs in the classroom is one way to apply technology in educational settings. Research has shown the benefits of using the smartboard with students with disabilities (SWDs) and second-language learners. There is still a need to understand further teachers’ perceptions towards using the smartboard in their classrooms with students with communication needs. Therefore, I conducted an exploratory qualitative study to explore Saudi teachers' perceptions regarding the use of smartboards with students with communication needs in the classroom. I collected data via in-depth interviews, smartboard screen recordings, and audio recordings of teachers’ lessons taught using …

"The Words We Do Not Yet Have." A Creative Inquiry Into Human-Plant Relationships, Maliheh Ghajargar
Art Faculty Articles and Research
Climate change, loss of plant biodiversity, and ocean pollution signal the drastic changes in our ecology that call us to attend to the needs of more than human forms of life on Earth. Sustainable design and HCI research are responding to this call by offering methods and approaches to design more sustainable products and systems and recently, more than human design is building momentum. This agenda seeks to reform traditional design processes by decentering the creative agency of the dominant socio-economical group of humans and foregrounding those of diverse Others. In this paper, I focus on plants as a nonhuman …
