Seeding Impact: Shifting From Orchestration To Emergence, Marilyn Darling, Veena Pankaj
Seeding Impact: Shifting From Orchestration To Emergence, Marilyn Darling, Veena Pankaj
The Foundation Review
The 2016 Foundation Review article “Emergent Learning: A Framework for Whole-System Strategy, Learning and Adaptation” talked about what an emergent strategy promises — to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Has this prediction played out in practice? Since it appeared in 2016, what has the growing community of Emergent Learning practitioners learned about what it takes to seed and grow impact?
This article addresses those questions, drawing on interviews with Emergent Learning Community members to illustrate what EL looks like in practice and how it is producing results that are emergent in nature. It …

Communities across the United States are striving to promote smart urban growth through compact urban infill residential development. They are doing so to mitigate sprawl's negative fiscal, environmental, social, and physical impacts, strengthen land use-housing-transportation linkages, and develop at densities needed for well-functioning public transit. Some states, such as California, have gone a step further by linking compact urban infill development as critical to meeting greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. Anecdotal evidence suggests some California local jurisdictions are planning disproportionately large amounts of new urban development in disadvantaged communities (DACs). However, empirical evidence is lacking. This study aims to fill …
The Narrative Inquiries Of How Community School Directors Implement Servant Leadership At Full-Service Community Schools In New York City, Stephen R. Campbell
The Narrative Inquiries Of How Community School Directors Implement Servant Leadership At Full-Service Community Schools In New York City, Stephen R. Campbell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Children and their families face increased barriers to accessing programs in low-income communities. In response to this concern, community schools employ community school directors (CSDs) who connect students and families with essential services across organizational boundaries. This study was designed to provide insight into the leadership characteristics of the CSD as a servant leader by determining if they engage with any of the 10 servant leadership qualities described by Spears (2010). There is limited research on the leadership practices of CSDs in low socioeconomic status areas. It is therefore necessary to conduct research on how CSDs foster collaboration between schools …

Contextualizing The Sdgs In The Anthropocene: Case Study Of Mekong Women’S Adaptation To Hydropower Dams In Northern Thailand, Maya Dania
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Large dams are among the most massive infrastructures built in the Mekong River and provide water-energy generators in the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB). Nevertheless, the Mekong River’s current transformation using electricity utilizing hydropower technology has damaged the local ecosystem in the LMB with social and environmental effects. Drawing upon feminist posthumanism, this study argues that the ongoing hydropower dam constructions in the LMB reflect uneven development and exclusion for women and the more-than-human nature of Mekong biodiversity. With a case study of Mekong women’s adaptation to regional development projects, this study aims to contextualize SDGs in the global crisis of …
Civic Education For Civic Leadership: Renewing Faith In Democracy, Ryan V. Weaver
Civic Education For Civic Leadership: Renewing Faith In Democracy, Ryan V. Weaver
eJournal of Public Affairs
Civic education and civic leadership are at the forefront of renewing faith in democracy on our campuses and communities. There is an urgent need for higher education to return to its historical foundation to fulfill the mission of democracy by educating students for democratic citizenship (Harkavy, 2006). Effectively integrating curricular and co-curricular civic engagement involves a balanced approach that is “both political and non-political” (Ehrlich, 2000, p. vi) to guide students to identify core values, develop civic knowledge, and build civic leadership skills (Finley, 2011; Hurtado, 2019). Civic leadership is an integral student learning outcome embedded within civic engagement praxis, …

Local Regulatory Protection For Ecosystem Services: A Case Study From The Karst Region Of Southeast Minnesota, Usa, Mary A. Williams, Susy Svatek Ziegler
The Geographical Bulletin
Human communities depend upon a myriad of ecosystem goods and services, which are produced by and depend on natural environmental processes occurring at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Land-use policy seldom recognizes the importance of these services or the environmental processes generating these services. This study examined the degree to which ecosystem services and supporting environmental processes are regulated at two United States municipal levels: city and county. Several ecosystem services but few environmental processes are regulated to some extent. We identified policy needs for environmentally sensitive karst features, aquifer recharge, groundwater quality, plant and animal populations, and flood mitigation. …
Body, Ritual, And Place: Advancing Their Chronotopic Interrelationship In Design Praxis And Pedagogy Through An Exploration Of Juxtaposed Surfaces, Threshold Sites Of Dialogic Encounter, And Collage, Robert Brown, Zoe Latham
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Echoing philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin’s chronotope, an ‘intrinsic connectedness of temporal and spatial relationships,’ our work explores the interrelation of the body, ritual, and place as a chrontopic site of design and pedagogy. This exploration reaffirms architecture’s grounding in people, their inhabitation of place, and spatial form, an interrelatedness too often underexamined withinarchitectural education. First positioning ritual thematically, our discussion addresses three interrelated issues: the role of juxtaposed ritual surfaces in activating the body, ritual and place; the potential of ritual surfaces as threshold sites of dialogic encounter; and collage as a medium to investigate and communicate the interrelationship of body, …
Teachers’ And School Leaders’ Perceptions Of A Community School Model’S Impact On Student Achievement, Kelsey Brabo
Teachers’ And School Leaders’ Perceptions Of A Community School Model’S Impact On Student Achievement, Kelsey Brabo
Student Theses and Dissertations
Community schools are a national initiative gaining traction due to the recent identification of the community school model as an evidence-based approach to education that satisfies requirements set forth by the Every Student Succeeds Act. The community school model centers around four pillars: integrated student support, extended and enriched learning opportunities, active family and community engagement, and shared leadership. With rapidly rising poverty rates and the expansion of community schools across the country, there is a need to ensure the efficiency and effective implementation of the community school model. The problem addressed in this qualitative case study is that the …

An Ai-Infused Educational Technology To Cultivate Self-Directed Learning In Sustainable Waste Management, Qiming Sun, I-Han Hsiao
Computer Science and Engineering
Proper waste management is a critical aspect of sustainable living. Many sustainable communities have implemented various initiatives to support sustainability through better waste management. However, the knowledge required for proper waste management is increasingly complex, and the process of waste classification can be very confusing. In this work, we present a home-grown web-based educational technology, Waste Genie (WG), that supplies bite-size interactive learning content with a scalable Human-AI collaborated design to support sustainability learning. WG leverages large language models to provide personalized feedback to guide the users through practicing waste sorting; it also synthesizes informative posts to facilitate learning. In …

The 2021 Kansas Rural Grocery Survey: Revaluating Extension’S Role In Rural Grocery Issues, Jacob A. Miller-Klugesherz, Jessica Ramirez, Rial Carver, Erica Blair, Leah J. Tsoodle, Lauren Scheufler
Journal of Extension
Kansas State University’s Rural Grocery Initiative, housed under research and extension, surveyed rural Kansas grocery stores in 2021 (N = 48). This is the second RGI survey, following up on the ownership and customer surveys in 2008. This survey broadly assesses owner characteristics, store features, and challenges. Using descriptive and thematic analyses, we identified two topline conclusions for grocers and their respective Extension services. First, grocers need to identify transition plans earlier and more often. Second, grocers can overcome competition and distribution challenges by diversifying their sourcing, supply, and offerings.

A Review Of Agrivoltaic Systems: Addressing Challenges And Enhancing Sustainability, Amro A. Zahrawi, Aly Mousaad Aly
Faculty Publications
Agrivoltaics is a relatively new term used originally for integrating photovoltaic (PV) systems into the agricultural landscape and expanded to applications such as animal farms, greenhouses, and recreational parks. The dual use of land offers multiple solutions for the renewable energy sector worldwide, provided it can be implemented without negatively impacting agricultural production. However, agrivoltaics represent a relatively new technology, facing challenges including economic viability, vulnerability to wind loads, and interference with growing crops. This paper reviews the recent research on integrating agrivoltaics with farming applications, focusing on challenges, wind impact on agrivoltaics, and economic solutions. The effect of agrivoltaics …
Gender Conscious Labor Environmentalism, Chaumtoli Huq
Gender Conscious Labor Environmentalism, Chaumtoli Huq
Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal
Drawing primarily from the internationally recognized human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, ("right to a healthy environment") as well as related international environmental and economic human rights laws, this Article makes three critical moves towards theorizing a gender conscious approach to labor environmentalism. First, this Article demonstrates through four cases studies from Bangladesh, that global and national labor movements can effectively address the root causes of labor rights violations, specifically around health and safety by deploying and mobilizing around the recently passed international right to a healthy environment. Second, the right to a healthy environment offers a …

Battery Electric Vehicles: Travel Characteristics Of Early Adopters, Yunwen Feng, Jean-Daniel Saphores, Hilary Nixon, Monica Ramirez Ibarra
Mineta Transportation Institute
Do U.S. households with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) drive less or more than U.S. households with internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs)? Answering this question is important to policymakers and transportation planners concerned with reducing vehicle miles traveled and the emissions of greenhouse gases from transportation. So far, this question has not been answered satisfactorily, possibly because of the relatively low number of EVs in the U.S. until recently, but also because of methodological issues. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by analyzing data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). We apply propensity score matching (PSM), …
