Implementing A Community Education Campaign To Improve Prenatal Care Among Navajo Women, Adrien J. Gupton Oct 2024

Implementing A Community Education Campaign To Improve Prenatal Care Among Navajo Women, Adrien J. Gupton

Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers

Early and consistent prenatal care (PNC) is essential to preventing adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Despite the recommendations made by the World Health Organization and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, childbearing women with health disparities living in rural settings are at an increased risk of experiencing inadequate PNC compared to their urban counterparts. The literature search suggests that limited access to PNC, childcare during the PNC visit, health care provider's perceptions of patients, and provider mistrust are barriers to early and consistent PNC. Growing research is placing a call to health care providers to implement interventions that are …

Impacting Practice Through Change: Implementing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Into A Nebraska School’S Curriculum, Samantha Renter Oct 2024

Impacting Practice Through Change: Implementing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Into A Nebraska School’S Curriculum, Samantha Renter

Group: Nebraska Methodist College

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a life-saving technique that serves importance in many emergencies, in which someone’s breathing, or heartbeat has stopped. Despite strong evidence proving that basic life support (including cardiopulmonary resuscitation) improves survival rates after cardiac events, current studies show that there is a significant lack of knowledge regarding typical signs and risk factors associated with serious medical conditions (Enizi et al., 2016). Alarmingly, only a small percentage of the United States (U.S.) population knows how to administer CPR; indicating that the widespread implementation of CPR training will benefit high school students while impacting the broader U.S. public. In the …

Npwh Position Statement: Access To Safe Abortion, National Association Of Nurse Practitioners In Women's Health

Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)

The National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH), along with numerous other national health professional organizations, affirms that abortion is an essential component of comprehensive reproductive healthcare and that it should be legal, safe, and accessible. Legal restrictions do not eliminate abortion but instead increase the likelihood that abortions will be performed unsafely, with the potential for complications and death. Legislative and policy decisions should be firmly rooted in science, protect the patient-clinician relationship, and aim at reducing disparities to ensure equitable access to safe, effective, and timely abortion care.

People with low incomes, those living in rural …

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

The history of Oscarville, Georgia, nestled within the Lake Lanier region of North Georgia, remains both known and unknown, existing as a significant yet elusive part of local lore and historical retellings. This article delves into the innovative approach of a place-based critical participatory action research program, "Historicizing Oscarville," which engaged teacher candidates and educators in exploring the obscured history of Oscarville. The narrative uncovers the complex layers of settler colonialism, slavery, racial cleansing, and subsequent erasure that characterize Oscarville's past. By employing the framework of Learning Teaching as an Interpretive Process (LTIP) within a place-based education model, the project …

The Green Flag’S Green Revolution: Analyzing The Effectiveness Of And Influence Of Greenwashing Within The Sustainability Initiatives Of International Motorsports Organizations, Andrea Hebel

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

As the world has begun to sharpen its efforts to reduce the impact of climate change, global industries must reckon with how to alter their technology to fit both consumer demands and new regulations. Among these industries is motorsports. Formula 1, NASCAR, and Formula E, three of the world’s largest motorsports organizations, have each developed initiatives to meet these changing standards. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of these initiatives at reducing environmental impacts, including examining the degree to which greenwashing tactics detract from these efforts. It finds that while NASCAR’s efforts lack behind new industry standards, Formula E and Formula …

Mass Shootings And Trauma-Informed Pedagogy, Kelly Stith

English Faculty Research

I am sitting in the University of Nevada Las Vegas Special Collections archive room in the Lied Library. I came here before to donate a zine of a previously published essay, “Still Echoes,” and photographs to a project they are coordinating in remembrance of the December 6, 2023, mass shooting. The Special Collections team was gracious enough to allow me to investigate other artifacts, including several handwritten condolence cards left at campus memorials. Being here is harrowing and reminds me that these are not just mere notes but reflections of people’s grief and the reckoning with a tragedy that rocked …

Street Trees And Urban Renewal: A Baltimore Case Study, Cynthia L. Merse, Geoffrey L. Buckley, Christopher G. Boone

The Geographical Bulletin

For centuries, street trees have persisted as enduring features of the urban landscape. Evidence shows that investing in “green infrastructure” not only contributes to a healthy ecosystem but offers economic and social benefits as well. Despite these advantages, the popularity of street trees has waxed and waned over the years in cities across the United States. The urban forest in Baltimore, Maryland has not been immune to these fluctuations, despite the city’s reputation for innovative tree care and the emphasis city officials placed on street tree planting as part of the urban renewal programs of the 1950s and 1960s. One …

Ethical Frameworks And Global Health: A Narrative Review Of The “Leave No One Behind” Principle, Daniela Oehring, Poorna Gunasekera

School of Health Professions

The “Leave No One Behind” (LNOB) principle, a fundamental commitment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizes the urgent need to address and reduce global health inequalities. As global health initiatives strive to uphold this principle, they face significant ethical challenges in balancing equity, resource allocation, and diverse health priorities. This narrative review critically examines these ethical dilemmas and their implications for translating LNOB into actionable global health strategies. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Semantic Scholar, covering publications from January 1990 to April 2024. The review included peer-reviewed articles, gray literature, …

A Qualitative Examination Of Factors Potentially Impacting Displacement Of Historically Black Communities, Daffney Moore Oct 2024

A Qualitative Examination Of Factors Potentially Impacting Displacement Of Historically Black Communities, Daffney Moore

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Historically, Black communities have often been discussed in the context of crime and poverty; however, most Black communities were flourishing neighborhoods with businesses, churches, and schools. Most of the literature related to gentrification and displacement does not address the root causes of the disappearance of Black communities, which generally centers on policies, legislation, force-outs, economic development, and racial disparities. This case study aimed to explore the displacement of a suburban historically Black community in St. Louis County, Missouri. Scholars have scarcely examined or written about the history of Black communities. The research question sought to explore the impact of displacement …

The Impact Of Historical Trauma And Political Conflict On Mental Health In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Case Study Of The Drc And Rwanda, Aurore Shima

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

Defined as an individual’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being, mental health is essential for personal recovery and societal stability, especially in post-conflict settings. In regions like Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where communities have endured extreme political violence, the scars of historical trauma remain deep. While various literature exists on the psychological effects of political conflict, few studies have been conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and the impact of historical trauma on mental health outcomes in this region remains sparse. This research explores the psychological effects of historical trauma stemming from political conflict in Rwanda and the …

An Empirical Study To Evaluate Aigc Detectors On Code Content, Jian Wang, Shangqing Liu, Xiaofei Xie, Yi Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) has garnered considerable attention for its impressive performance, with Large Language Models (LLMs), like ChatGPT, emerging as a leading AIGC model that produces high-quality responses across various applications, including software development and maintenance. Despite its potential, the misuse of LLMs, especially in security and safetycritical domains, such as academic integrity and answering questions on Stack Overflow, poses significant concerns. Numerous AIGC detectors have been developed and evaluated on natural language data. However, their performance on code-related content generated by LLMs remains unexplored. To fill this gap, in this paper, we present an empirical study evaluating …

Essential Understandings For Non-Indigenous Science Educators When Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge And Ways Of Knowing, Genia Cegla

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Historically, Indigenous Native American voices have been silenced and disregarded as a result of the US’ colonial history. Educators are in a unique position that allows us to begin healing from this past through equity and inclusion which studies show are essential to success for students in school and beyond. While many teachers acknowledge the importance of including Indigenous Knowledge in curricula, they lack the support and resources for how to start. This capstone aims to answer the question: What insights are necessary for non-Indigenous educators when incorporating Indigenous knowledge into climate change curricula? The final project is designed as …

Negara Hukum Kesejahteraan Di Batas Pantai: Paradoks Perlindungan Negara Terhadap Masyarakat Pesisir Di Tengah Perubahan Iklim, Aji Baskoro

Jurnal Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial

Climate change poses significant challenges to vulnerable coastal communities in Indonesia. As a welfare state, the Indonesian government is expected to safeguard these vulnerable groups through policies that promote their welfare and sustainable livelihoods. However, current policies create a paradox. This article explores this paradox: on the one hand, Indonesia adheres to the welfare state principle, which demands that all government actions be grounded in law, ensuring public safety and welfare. On the other hand, the policies focus on exploiting natural resources, exacerbating the vulnerabilities of coastal communities, particularly in the face of climate change. The article employs a normative …

Towards Understanding Capacity Development As A System: Perceptions From Multiple Conservation Stakeholder Groups In Bhutan, Jeremy S. Brooks, Sonam Wangyel Wang, Ugyen Namgyel, Jennifer Zavaleta Cheek, Katia Nakamura Lam, Johanna Eklund, Om Katel, Daniel C. Miller

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Capacity development is crucial for enduring conservation success. Recent scholarship has called for a systems perspective based on input from local stakeholders to better understand and develop conservation capacity. However, few studies have adopted such an approach to explore interactions among capacities or how capacity development needs and priorities evolve. We address this gap through a case study from Bhutan, centred on perceptions from 52 local conservation practitioners, planners, funders and community members. We use mixed methods to identify which capacities have been important for conservation success, which capacities are needed for future success, which capacities are foundational and how …
