Green Spaces And Socioeconomic Disparities In São Paulo City, Brazil: A Spatial Analysis Approach, Flavia Vieira Xavier
Green Spaces And Socioeconomic Disparities In São Paulo City, Brazil: A Spatial Analysis Approach, Flavia Vieira Xavier
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Urban green spaces are an invaluable asset for the benefits they provide to human well-being and environmental sustainability. São Paulo, one of the largest cities in the world, well-known for its demographic complexity, prosperous economy, and cultural diversity, presents great disparities in the distribution and quality of green spaces. Besides that, different socioeconomic groups have different access to these spaces. The significant challenge to achieving equitable urban development invites us to investigate these spaces further, associated with socioeconomic parameters, to understand which groups benefit most from urban green spaces and to advance in the environmental justice discussion. This dissertation contains …

State Taxing Power Over Tribal Leasing Activity: Balancing Bracker With The Call To Modernize, Caitlyn Lindstrom
State Taxing Power Over Tribal Leasing Activity: Balancing Bracker With The Call To Modernize, Caitlyn Lindstrom
American University Business Law Review
Federal law operates on the premise that state jurisdiction does not interfere with American Indian jurisdiction, and it is generally accepted that states may not tax Indian entities or members. However, the Supreme Court held that there are circumstances in which states may extend taxation onto non-Indians residing on tribal lands. In cases where Indians believe that states are violating legislation or regulations prohibiting state taxation, the Court follows the Bracker balancing test, an interest balancing test that weighs state, federal, and tribal interests. As with most balancing tests, this test lacks strict guidance on how to properly weigh certain …

Women's Role In Sustainable Development Project In Rural Indonesia: A Case Study Of Access Project, United Nations Development Programme, Elizabeth Gabriela
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research focuses on the role of women participants in sustainable development projects in rural Indonesia, analyzing intricacies through Ecofeminism and intersectionality. More specifically, it examines the ACCESS Project implemented by UNDP in four provinces, aiming to address women’s engagement in the energy sector. ACCESS is a case study exploring empowerment within an institutionally gendered landscape—bounded by state quotas—for employment. Employing qualitative methods such as document analysis and semi-structured interviews with eight participants, the study draws from Ecofeminism and intersectionality to understand its central arguments. The findings depict progress toward gender inclusion in technical management for leadership roles, allowing women …
Ideals Of Benevolence, Acts Of Dysconsciousness: White Women's Pursuit Of Diversity In Nonprofits, Tessa A. Fulmer
Ideals Of Benevolence, Acts Of Dysconsciousness: White Women's Pursuit Of Diversity In Nonprofits, Tessa A. Fulmer
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Recent political movements such as the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements have brought renewed attention to the social roles of White women and their unique position of intersectional privilege and oppression. White women experience the benefits of whiteness while simultaneously experiencing the gendered oppression of womanhood. However, there is a lack of research exploring how White women conceptualize and respond to their own positionality as both White individuals and as women. This study utilizes constructivist grounded theory to examine how White women navigate their social location within the context of working in the nonprofit sector, a space wherein White …

Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation explores the integration of Flood Risk Management (FRM) into municipal planning in the United States through three interrelated studies. The research addresses the central question: How do U.S. municipalities integrate FRM into urban planning, and what factors, principles, and challenges shape this process?
The first study reviews current practices, principles, and challenges in integrating FRM with municipal planning. It highlights gaps in actionable guidance, the roles of diverse planners, and strategies to balance competing priorities, such as economic development and infrastructure needs. The second study develops an Expert Mental Model (EMM) to capture the nuanced interplay between external …

Equipping Middle School Teachers With Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In Teaching Computer Science Through Professional Learning: A Longitudinal Case Study, Xintong Bausch
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) is an effective way to foster equitable and meaningful computer science (CS) learning experience for historically marginalized students. This dissertation study employed longitudinal data to investigate five middle school teachers’ development of CRP understandings and enactments over many years participating in the CS Pathways Research Practitioner Partnership (RPP) project. Grounded in conceptual change theory (knowledge-in-pieces perspective), the study explored the five teachers’ CRP conceptual change trajectories as indicated by their definitions and enactments of the pedagogy over time. From the epistemological perspective, the findings presented how teachers reflected, refined, and revised their naïve knowledge of CRP …

The Cost Of Caring – Understanding Psychological Distress In Support Staff Who Work With Adults With An Intellectual Disability In Ireland., Deirdre Mullins Ms, Dr. Christopher Mccusker
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Background: Evidence suggests that levels of psychological distress are elevated in staff who support people with challenging behaviour (CB) and intellectual disability (ID) in residential care. However, in Ireland, there has been little research examining the extent of this and determinants thereof. Specific Aims: This study explored psychological functioning and workplace related quality of life, and factors associated with such, in support staff in Ireland. Method: 109 participants were recruited through a social media platform. Levels of stress, depression, anxiety and work-related quality of life were assessed using standardised measures. A bespoke questionnaire assessed key work-related factors such as …

This diagram explores the concept of territoire, illustrating its multidimensional nature as a dynamic socio-spatial system. It captures the interplay of human interaction, social structures, environmental factors, and cultural connections. The framework demonstrates how communities adapt to and shape their environments, integrating local knowledge, sustainable practices, and resource management. It highlights governance systems, traditions, and collective identity as essential for resilience and sustainability. The diagram also reflects on intangible elements like sense of place, identity, and heritage, which deepen emotional and cultural connections to the territoire. Together, these layers form a holistic approach to understanding sustainable community development.

Just Look At The Map: Bounding Environmental Review Of Housing Development In California, Eric Biber, Christopher S. Elmendorf, Nicholas Marantz, Moira O’Neill
Faculty Scholarship
California faces a dire housing crisis. California’s land-use regulatory system remains a key driver of this crisis. State law grants local governments broad power to craft their own regulations on how to review and approve housing development. Though state law may limit a locality’s ability to outright deny some types of housing development, local governments can and do use creative ways to stall approvals or functionally deny housing by making it infeasible to develop. One such strategy is to demand more intensive environmental review of new housing projects under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) than what state law requires. …
