Sense Of Program Community And Imposterism In Online Business Graduate Programs, Heather Leigh Rippetoe
Sense Of Program Community And Imposterism In Online Business Graduate Programs, Heather Leigh Rippetoe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Building off seminal works on community including McMillan and Chavis, Lave and Wenger, Graves, and Wenger et al, the Institutional, Program, and Professional (IPP) community framework for online allows students, faculty, administrators, and alumni the opportunity to consider how to support community beyond online courses into programs, the institution, and the early career (profession). At the same time, as this way of thinking about community in online learning is emerging, academia is increasingly acknowledging the presence of imposterism, also known as imposter feelings, Imposter Phenomenon, or Imposter Syndrome for students, scholars, and early professionals. Researchers are increasingly considering imposter feelings …

A key problem in achieving access to and sustained presence in computing and computing education (CEd) in the United States is environments that are all too often designed in ways that are harmful and inequitable toward systemically minoritized communities. While various scholars have explored ways to design equitable spaces within differing contexts, often, equity is framed merely as an issue of access. This dismisses the lived experiences of minoritized communities and can lead to shallow perspectives of equity that fail to address community concerns and further push these communities out of sustained participation and presence in computing and CEd. Drawing …
Critical Scoping Review Of Critical Consciousness As A Framework For Precollege Engineering Education, Devon Riter, James Holly Jr.
Critical Scoping Review Of Critical Consciousness As A Framework For Precollege Engineering Education, Devon Riter, James Holly Jr.
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Engineering’s promise to build a better world has been realized differently across the United States, often with lines of social identity determining who becomes an engineer, who benefits from engineering innovations, and who suffers devastating consequences. Many educational scholars have argued that engineering inequities are in part due to deep inequities in precollege engineering education, including the failure to enact pedagogies in which engineering educational spaces can help students recognize oppression and act toward liberation. In this critical scoping review we searched five databases to identify 72 relevant peer-reviewed articles for review. Our findings indicate that research on critical consciousness …

Urbanism Strategies For Linking Existing And New Cities, Naglaa J. Q. Mo’Men Abdel-Qader Ebrahim1, Mohsen Bayad2
Journal of Engineering Research
New cities, designed for urban growth outside existing metropolitan regions, face challenges in street infrastructure due to rapid expansion. Efficient control of mobility is crucial as cities grow. Sustainable transportation involves factors like infrastructure, public transit, delivery networks, affordability, efficiency, air quality, health, and reduced emissions. Commuting between established and new urban areas is common, leading to issues like urban sprawl, longer travel times, and congestion in developing countries. The challenge is to improve accessibility while addressing air quality, traffic, congestion, noise, built environment, emissions, and sprawl. This study aims to explore factors influencing mobility choices in Egypt, focusing on …

Filipino Citizen Planners In Stockton & San Francisco, California: Little Manila Rising (Lmr) & South Of Market Community Action Network (Somcan), Natalie Pauline Delos Santos
City and Regional Planning
Citizen planners are direct representatives of their communities, “often working without formal position, a title, or support from the state” (Beard, 2012, p. 708). The purpose of this project is to enrich the existing literature of planning history, by including stories of citizen planners. And acknowledging them as key actors in building equitable communities. This project asserts the importance of local knowledge and citizen empowerment when it comes to successfully developing community.
This project follows the story of two Filipino citizen planner organizations. One is in Stockton, named Little Manila Rising (LMR) which is located in South Downtown Stockton. The …

Theses
This paper explores the Intersectional Feminist and Queer activist's work in the Contemporary arts through a reconsideration of the existing scholarly literature and the use of social media platforms from the third wave of Intersection and Transnational Feminist and Queer work. Looking specifically at motifs that connotate to the bodies of people assigned female at birth, there are recognizable impacts at both micro and macro community levels. This research is done in an Intersectional Feminist and Queer theoretical methodology to better understand the implications of valuing multifaceted identities in the 21st century. This paper identifies artists and activists who work …
Role Of Partial Requirement Tariffs And Standby Charges In Microgrid Adoption In Ohio, Matthew R. Fulton, Andrew R. Thomas
Role Of Partial Requirement Tariffs And Standby Charges In Microgrid Adoption In Ohio, Matthew R. Fulton, Andrew R. Thomas
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Utility partial load tariffs can be used to enable microgrids to be connected to distributions systems. While partial load tariffs can be avoided by connecting the microgrid directly to the transmission grid, this strategy is likely to be more effective for larger microgrids (e.g. 10 MW). But partial load tariffs – if suitably designed -- can be very useful to enabling smaller microgrid development.
How Can Urban Nature-Based Preschools Partner With Churches To Support Each Other?, Sarah Sinclair
How Can Urban Nature-Based Preschools Partner With Churches To Support Each Other?, Sarah Sinclair
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Nature-based preschools are increasing exponentially across the United States. These preschools combine best practices in early childhood education with place-based environmental education. Nature is the unifying theme of nature-based preschools, with programs spending a significant amount of time outdoors learning in, with, and about the natural world. Many nature-based early childhood educators are seeking to create urban nature-based preschools to reach children and communities with little access to green spaces or natural habitats. Urban nature-based preschools thus require locations that have attached green space or can access public green space easily. In most states of the U.S., these preschools must …

Religious And Spiritual Communities Must Adapt Or Die: Surviving And Thriving During Challenging Contemporary Times, Thomas G. Plante
Religious And Spiritual Communities Must Adapt Or Die: Surviving And Thriving During Challenging Contemporary Times, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
Current trends within both religious and secular communities suggest that contemporary times mean that people spend more time alone than with others. Community engagement in general has been declining, while religious and spiritual community engagement in particular has dropped off significantly in recent decades, and most especially following the COVID-19 global pandemic. Although humans are social beings and benefit from community engagement, we tend to avoid or minimize our affiliations and associations, including our religious and spiritual ones today. Religious and spiritual communities must adapt to changing times or risk becoming irrelevant, diminishing further, and losing their sustainability to continue …
Reaching An Aim Differently? Corporate Social Responsibility Regulation In Australia And India, Mia Mahmudur Rahim, Mohammad Abu Sayeed
Reaching An Aim Differently? Corporate Social Responsibility Regulation In Australia And India, Mia Mahmudur Rahim, Mohammad Abu Sayeed
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
Businesses incorporate corporate social responsibility principles mainly through voluntary and mandatory approaches. Advocates of the voluntary approach believe that companies can use charitable initiatives as a management tool to meet social and environmental expectations and that mandating Corporate Social Responsibility ("CSR") would not encourage companies to prioritize anything beyond profits. Opponents argue that without legal requirements to drive social responsibility, relying on companies to self-regulate would not effectively integrate social values into corporate behaviors. Instead, they suggest that legal regulation of CSR can offer a more effective strategy. This Article examines the limitations ofthese two approaches by analyzing Australia, which …

Assessment results show that passing rates in introductory courses and retention rates of firstyear students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of X, a predominantly Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), significantly dropped with the onset of COVID-19. These results and trends highlight the academic preparation of incoming students, particularly the new cohort of underrepresented Hispanic students from underserved and challenged communities in the region, who may not have the necessary skills (e.g., adaptability, persistence, and performance) for the rigor of engineering education. To address this challenge, an onboarding “boostcamp” was created for incoming and transfer students …

Trust In Information, Preparation, And Resource Adequacy In Coastal Louisiana, Elizabeth Long-Meek, Michael R. Cope, Scott Sanders, Carol Ward
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Natural disasters pose significant challenges to communities, affecting lives, properties, and infrastructure unpredictably. Coastal regions, like those in southern Louisiana, are particularly vulnerable due to their exposure to hurricanes, coastal erosion, and other chronic environmental hazards exacerbated by climate change. This study investigates the relationship between trust in government and social entities and perceptions of disaster preparedness among residents of Plaquemines and Lafourche parishes, Louisiana. Drawing on data collected via a multi-mode survey, including measures of trust and perceived preparedness, logistic regression models reveal that trust in information from federal, state, and local governments, as well as from community networks …

Asset Based Architectural Design With A Systemic Perspective In Vulnerable Community- Participatory Action Research In Iraq Bersive 2 Refugee Camp, Hei Chan, Peter Hasdell
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Vulnerable communities often lack of basic housing and facilities. However, with more understanding, they not only face housing problem but also with social, economic, environmental, political issues and so on. Traditional building approach often focuses on material needs while the underlying causes could be neglected. In fact, vulnerability is often more in the intangibles: relationships with self, others and environment. With this regard, how could designers develop efficient systemic design strategies responding to the complexity of social systems and empower vulnerable groups to recognize themselves as interrelated actors in community development? Asset based design approach under the community capital framework …

Using Living Labs To Engage Communities And Stakeholders In The Development And Knowledge Exchange Of Urban Health And Sanitation Solutions In The Global South, Emmanuel Tsekleves, Roger Pickup, Manoj Roy
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Engaging communities and stakeholders in developing user-centred urban health solutions, whilst linking the research to their own development, pose major challenges for design researchers working in the Global South. In a number of circular sanitation projects in a community school in Ghana, we co-designed and installed an anaerobic digester delivering electricity and sanitation improvements. To enhance impact we developed and pilot-tested a Living and physical Lab design approach. One project focussed on hand hygiene. We introduced students to ‘making the invisible visible’ by visualising microbes from their hands and assessing handwashing effects. Our findings suggest that visualisation of microbes not …

Designing From The Plants' Perspective. A Field Case Study In Urban Forest Of “La Goccia”, Francesco Vergani, Fabio Di Liberto
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Designing by engaging more-than-human agents such as plants is a complex chal-lenge, as they have long been regarded as "ontologically inferior" resources pri-marily serving human needs. Emerging studies in the field of Plant Neurobiology are now breaking down knowledge barriers, gathering extraordinary data that recognize plant actions and behaviors guided by a distinct form of intelligence. Considering this breakthrough findings, this paper describes a 10-day workshop involving 52 international design students from Politecnico di Milano University that focused on experiencing plants in a former industrial area within the city borders. Through the years, this area has gone from desolation to …

Preferable, Contextual And Sustainable… Climate Futures For Ecological Citizens., Robert Phillips, Sharon Baurley, Emily Boxall, Luke Gooding, Daniel Knox, Charlotte Nordmoen, Alec Shepley, Tom Simmons, Sarah West, Joanna Wright
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The responsibility for sustainable futures extends beyond individual disciplines, necessitating the adoption of diverse approaches across various fields. Water pollution is at epidemic levels, valuable materials go to landfill, ocean detritus grows, many people are disconnected from green space, and biodiversity is plummeting. We need new modes of climate futures, championing citizen agency. Societies require cross-collaborative, inclusive approaches to navigate climate future challenges. We seek to foresee ‘climate futures’ that signpost challenges, unpicking (appropriate) opportunities, benefits, and pitfalls. Through an Ecological Citizenship lens, the authors traverse situations, through preferable futures. It is an entry point for transition design, creating climate …

Show Me What You Mean: The Case For Easy-To-Use 3d Visualizations Of The Built Environment, Noelyn Stephens, Juan Salamanca
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Visual communication, particularly realistic visualization, has been found to be effective for facilitating constructive discussion on issues related to the built environment. Here, we make the case that a browser-based, intuitively designed 3D visualization interface could widen access to such approaches increasing opportunities for co-creation. Using this type of easy-to-access tool could allow community members to own the process of creating a shared vision for their city.

Towards Empowering Cohousing Communities: Finding Balance With A Group Of Users-Clients Throughout The Architectural Process, Audrey Mertens, Louise Coniasse, Catherine Elsen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper explores the evolving role of architects in cohousing projects in response to environmental, economic, and social challenges. This research incorporates insights from semi-structured interviews in three Belgian case studies. The foundations and values of cohousing communities are tackled, highlighting shifts in architects' roles and challenges in working with groups of user-clients. In these cohousing processes, we found that the representatives of these user-client groups may not always share the full breadth of their negotiations with architects. Architects seem to miss out on some of the nuances, and some participants found that this approach left their voices unheard. Amidst …

Communities in resource-poor areas face health, food production, sustainability, and overall survival challenges. Consequently, they are commonly featured in global debates surrounding societal collapse. Rapa Nui (Easter Is- land) is often used as an example of how overexploitation of limited resources resulted in a catastrophic popula- tion collapse. A vital component of this narrative is that the rapid rise and fall of pre-contact Rapanui population growth rates was driven by the construction and overexploitation of once extensive rock gardens. However, the extent of island-wide rock gardening, while key for understanding food systems and demography, must be better understood. Here, we …
