An Oral History Study: The Relationship Between Curriculum And Social And Cultural Capital In The New Orleans School System, Alaina Gaugis Carter
An Oral History Study: The Relationship Between Curriculum And Social And Cultural Capital In The New Orleans School System, Alaina Gaugis Carter
Doctoral Dissertations
This oral history study examines how high school academic experiences in New Orleans public and charter schools have shaped graduates’ preparedness for adulthood, active citizenship, and participation as productive members of society. This study explores the relationship between curriculum, particularly scripted curriculum, and the development of social and cultural capital. The research critiques neoliberal education reforms that prioritize accountability, standardization, and market-based outcomes over relational and community-centered learning. Using oral history methodology and the currere method, semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve New Orleans high school alumni who graduated both before and after Hurricane Katrina from public, charter, and parochial …
Land Without Legacy: The Case For Market-Based Appraisals On Hawaiian Home Lands, Alexis C. Owens
Land Without Legacy: The Case For Market-Based Appraisals On Hawaiian Home Lands, Alexis C. Owens
Seattle University Law Review
The Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920 (HHCA) was enacted to restore Native Hawaiians to ancestral lands and promote long term economic self-sufficiency. More than a century later, that promise remains unfulfilled. This Note argues that a central but overlooked barrier lies in the HHCA’s mandated use of the replacement cost appraisal method, which systematically undervalues homestead properties by excluding market forces. In one of the most expensive housing markets in the United States, this approach suppresses home equity, the primary means of intergenerational wealth building, and restricts beneficiaries’ access to credit and financial stability. By severing the connection between …

Centering Well-Being And Wholeness: Exploring Racial Battle Fatigue Among Black 3-K To Twelfth-Grade Teachers, Olubunmi Fashusi
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study, with some descriptive statistics, examined Black 3-K through 12th- grade teachers’ experiences with racial battle fatigue (RBF), the psychological and behavioral stress responses they perceived most accurately convey how RBF manifests for them, and the strategies they used to disrupt RBF’s impact. Participants experienced compounded RBF due to advocating for students (i.e., speaking out, supporting, or intervening). Participants’ most perceived psychological stress response to RBF was racism awareness, and most perceived behavioral stress response was spirituality or religion. Participants disrupted the impact of RBF through intrinsic care (i.e., purpose or why, managing emotions, and self-care) and …

Power-Sharing Under Pressure: What A Decade Of Community Partnership Reveals For Philanthropy Today, Clare Nolan, Pilar Mendoza
The Foundation Review
Between 2017 and 2024, U.S. philanthropy experienced a period of significant innovation as many foundations reconsidered long-standing assumptions about control and began taking steps to share power more directly with the communities they fund. This article draws on community leaders’ reflections, alongside the authors’ perspective as long-term evaluators, to examine how these commitments were experienced in practice.
The article focuses on the David and Lucile Packard Foundation’s Starting Smart and Strong Initiative (S3I), a 10-year effort to strengthen early learning systems across East San Jose, Fresno, and Oakland, California. Drawing on interviews with grantees and technical assistance partners, along with …

Roe V. Wade With Audre And Nikki: Their Social And Political Impacts Following The Landmark Decision, Sharon L. Eaddy
Roe V. Wade With Audre And Nikki: Their Social And Political Impacts Following The Landmark Decision, Sharon L. Eaddy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis analyzes how the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade shaped public understandings of reproductive rights and how those understandings diverged across race, gender, class, and sexuality. Using a qualitative, interdisciplinary design, the study pairs close textual analysis of Nikki Giovanni’s and Audre Lorde’s poems and essays with socio-legal and historical context on constitutional privacy doctrine, the Ninth and Fourteenth Amendments, and the Reconstruction legacy of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. The central research question is: what kinds of reproductive “freedom” become legible through Roe’s rights-based framing, and what forms of constraint remain visible when Black …

Translational equity means ensuring that diagnostics, treatments, care models, and prevention strategies are developed and implemented so they work for populations with the greatest burden and least access to care. In Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), where most evidence derives from highly educated, non-Hispanic White participants at large academic centers, translational equity is critical to prevent misclassification, limited access, and widening disparities and to ensure that underrepresented communities shape how new knowledge moves into practice. Hispanic and other populations in the United States are disproportionately affected by ADRD yet remain underrepresented in research, with gaps especially pronounced in high-poverty …

We Buried The Curriculum And Called It Holy, Charles E. Becknell Jr., Johnna Rocker-Clinton
We Buried The Curriculum And Called It Holy, Charles E. Becknell Jr., Johnna Rocker-Clinton
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
This track develops the concept of apocalyptic pedagogy by situating it within Africana studies and classroom rituals, illustrating how curriculum itself can be examined, buried, and reimagined through practices rooted in Black educology. Drawing on ancestral knowledge and collective memory, the track envisions ritual as curriculum, where libation and remembrance become practices of mourning and reclamation. Rather than centering institutional reform, the track frames education as a ritual circle enacting pedagogy as remembrance, mourning, and rebirth, honoring Black life as sacred.

Reconstruction And Repatriation Of Looted Cultural Heritage Property Ownership Mechanism, Yichi Zhang
Reconstruction And Repatriation Of Looted Cultural Heritage Property Ownership Mechanism, Yichi Zhang
Pepperdine Policy Review
The displacement of cultural artifacts through conflict, colonization, and illicit trafficking has created profound gaps in humanity's shared heritage. This paper examines the systemic barriers to cultural property restitution and proposes a structured dispute resolution framework as the primary remedy. Drawing on the social, nonmarket, and economic values of cultural heritage, the study establishes why repatriation extends beyond legal formality into questions of identity, sovereignty, and collective memory. A review of existing international instruments, including the 1954 Hague Convention, the 1970 UNESCO Convention, and the ICPRCP, reveals persistent enforcement gaps and jurisdictional inconsistencies that impede meaningful restitution. Comparative case studies …

Rethinking Luxury In Tourism: Slow Travel, Signature Experiences, Alternative Accommodation And Policy Interaction In The Irish And Eu Context, Maria E. Murphy, James Hanrahan Dr, John Carty
Irish Journal of Tourism, Hospitality, Leisure and Event Research
Over the past number of years, luxury tourism is changing as sustainability concerns, shifting consumer values, and new policy frameworks challenge older ideas of extravagance and exclusivity. This paper explores how modern luxury tourism is being shaped by slow travel, meaningful experiences, and stronger connections with local communities, focusing on Ireland and the wider European Union. Using an action-research approach, the study is based on the creation and running of Within the Village, a village-based luxury tourism accommodation in the west of Ireland, founded on the principles of the Italian Albergo Diffuso (scattered hotel) sustainable model. Through repeated cycles of …

“I Have A Voice”: Bridging The Communication And Sensemaking Gap Between Restorative Justice Practice And Program Implementation, Stefan Cocorelis
Dissertations
Restorative justice (RJ), a philosophy, practice, and movement inspired by local, largely Indigenous traditions, has increasingly been introduced in modern criminal justice systems as an alternative process to more comprehensively address harmful incidents, heal harms, and meet victim’s needs. While RJ implementation growth is encouraging for its advocates, there remain significant questions around formalized RJ practice. Specifically, little is known about the decision-making process in implementing and administering RJ programming within criminal justice. This dissertation aimed to contribute to the understanding of RJ practice and implementation efforts within criminal justice systems by putting emphasis on practitioners already working directly in …

Gender, Customs, And Oil Palm: Reframing Iban Women's Roles In Sarawak's Changing Forest Landscape, Lucy Sebli, Caroline Eve Gembar, Dexter Sigan John, Claudia Jiton, Dick Lembang Dugun
Forest and Society
The expansion of the oil palm industry significantly shapes gender roles within Iban society, revealing a complex interplay between tradition and modernity. Contemporary research underscores the fundamentally egalitarian nature of Iban society, a crucial context for understanding evolving gender relations. While Iban women primarily manage domestic responsibilities, this occurs within a framework promoting equality, where all individuals are valued and afforded equal rights and opportunities. In subsistence farming, men often support heavier tasks, highlighting a collaborative approach to gender roles. However, the increasing complexity and stratification of the gendered division of labour, particularly exacerbated by oil palm cultivation, introduces new …

Making The Case For Career Academies In Shaping Pre-Collegiate Students For Stem Career Pathways, Felix Quayson
Journal of Research in Technical Careers
Career academies are increasingly important in preparing pre-collegiate high school students for STEM pathways by connecting academic learning, technical skill development, career identity, and postsecondary readiness. STEM-focused career academies function as structured bridges between secondary education, higher education, and the labor market. Through small learning communities, interdisciplinary curricula, employer partnerships, work-based learning, and early exposure to college and career expectations, career academies help students understand STEM not only as school subjects but as possible futures. Research suggests that career academies can improve student engagement, support school persistence, and strengthen labor market outcomes when implemented with fidelity. The article concludes that …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Household food waste represents a multifaceted sustainability challenge with environmental, nutritional, and economic repercussions. However, no integrated multidimensional assessment has examined how impacts vary across different household food waste behaviours, representing a critical knowledge gap. This study presents the first nationally representative, behaviourally segmented assessment of household food waste in the Republic of Ireland (ROI), integrating life cycle assessment (LCA), nutrient composition, and economic assessment. Data from 966 households were used to quantify food waste volumes across twelve food categories and four behavioural clusters. Environmental impacts were estimated using the ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (H) method, while nutrient and monetary losses …
