The specificity of sport is a concept acknowledged on both sides of the Atlantic. In the US it is linked to a (limited) exception from antitrust laws. In Europe, the application of the rules on free movement of persons, services, and workers, as well as antitrust, has left some room for it. But whereas the US has gone full steam ahead to regulate competitive balance, Europe has not. In this contribution, inspired by the work of Steve Weatherill and others, we ask the question whether the observed differentiated approach is justified because of the nature of competition on the two …

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series
Using enrollment based classification realignments for high school cross country running competitions in the state of Texas, we analyze the impact of changes in the intensity of competition on individual and team performance. The analysis demonstrates significant improvement in the performance of teams promoted to more competitive classifications in the boys’ division but does not yield similar results in the girls’ division. We also analyze the impact on runners according to their rankings within teams and find improvements to be greater for runners ranking lower relative to team leaders driven by heterogeneity in motivation based on ability or the sequential …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(4): 54 - 72, 2024. The remarkable popularity of fitness trends like high intensity functional training (HIFT), choreographed high intensity classes (CHIC) and resistance (RT) trainings raises the question on their effect on cardio-respiratory, lactate removal rate, endurance and body composition responses. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare these effects. Ninety-five participants were randomly assigned into 16 weeks of these trainings, five sessions/week. Anthropometric and fitness tests were carried out before training (PRE), after eight (8W) and sixteen weeks (16W). Body composition measures demonstrated significant decrease in body fat percentage ( …

Management Dynamics
India’s fitness service market in the year 2020 was worth US $ 2.6 billion while the fitness product market was worth US $ 3.7 billion and was anticipated to increase by 8.9% CAGR by 2026. Many people now actively participate in sports and attend fitness facilities due to the increased attention being paid to personal health. The factors affecting customer demand for fitness centres have not received much attention. To do so is the purpose of this paper. This study utilized the quantitative survey method of quantitative design to collect responses from fitness centre customers. Online and offline survey questionnaires …

The Effect Of National Origin And Skin Color On Playing Time In The Wnba, Nola Agha, David Berri, Akash Bhatt, Jennifer Van Gilder
Sport Management
This article uses data from the 1997-2022 seasons to investigate the role of bias in the distribution of playing time in the WNBA. We evaluate national origin, a fixed and objective measure, and improve upon past uses of subjective, perception-based measures of race by using a more objective measure of skin tone. More specifically, via a fixed-effect estimation of 2,949 WNBA player-year combinations we find no evidence that the national origin of either players or coaches is related to the provision of playing time. Similarly, skin tone of players or coaches (n=893), either alone or in combination with national origin, …

Exploitation In College Sports: No Longer Just A “Man's Game”., Nola Agha, David A. Berri, Stacey L. Brook, Courtney Paulson
Sport Management
Previous studies of college athlete compensation have generally focused on the “revenue sports” of football and men’s basketball. Hence, wage exploitation is often considered a “man’s game.” In the 50 years since Title IX, many women’s college sports have reported millions of dollars in revenue, suggesting wage exploitation is possible in college softball. Data on 19,760 athletes from 294 universities from 2012-2021, combined with two different sources of athletic revenue reach the same conclusion: wage exploitation exists in college softball. Furthermore, thousands of players generate more revenue in college than the wages they are likely to earn playing professional softball.
