Strategic Diplomacy: The Singapore Case, Country Report For The Project On ‘Strategic Diplomacy For 21st Century Defence And Statecraft’, Evelyn Goh, Wee-Kiat Lim
CCX Research
How does Singapore conduct strategic diplomacy despite being a small and constrained state? This report first identifies the major long-term drivers affecting Singapore’s security, both at the domestic level (rapidly ageing population, immigrant assimilation, and growing societal fault-lines) and at the international or systemic level (changing global order, power of technology, slow collective action on climate change). Then it analyses how Singapore strategists deal with two of their most prominent problem-sets: (i) positioning Singapore in relation to the US-China rivalry and the changing international order; and (ii) tackling climate change as a collective action problem. Both problem-sets illustrate how Singapore …

(Plant)Ing Traditional Roots: Exploring An Impact Of Environmental Shifts On Traditional Phytotherapy Practices In The Cusco Region Of Perú, Nicole Elizabeth Wilmot
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis investigates the potential outcomes of environmental shifts on plant-based medical practices in the Cusco region of Peru. Located in the Andes mountain range, at a high elevation, the environment varies immensely, specifically in the various types of native plants in the region. Historically, using plants as natural forms of medicine or healthcare has been deeply rooted in many indigenous communities, traditions, and cultures globally. Environmentally, there have been potential changes and shifts in temperature, water, and soil that affect the nutrition and health of plants to maintain their beneficial properties. Due to various factors, adaptations or shifts to …

Spooky Psychology: The Therapeutics And Ethics Of Horror, Shaelyn Mcgowan
Research Days Posters 2024
Research suggests that horror media psychologically affects viewers in starkly different ways. Some fans use the genre to manage their anxiety: fictional stories can create safe environments in which to experience panic and dread, making it easier to develop functional coping mechanisms for use in stressful real-world situations. Other viewers, however, find horror so anxiety-inducing or even traumatic that it becomes unhelpful as a tool for emotional learning. Moreover, stereotypes in the horror genre can hurt marginalized groups more than stereotypes in other genres, as associating fear with a certain group is a powerful way of promoting bigotry. This research …
Equity On The Whiteboard: Implications Of Historical Redlining On Educational Outcomes, Clay Jeon
Equity On The Whiteboard: Implications Of Historical Redlining On Educational Outcomes, Clay Jeon
Research Days Posters 2024
The merits of first-rate educational practices are seldom disputed; education acts as a pathway to individual prosperity, a cornerstone of community well-being, and—perhaps most importantly—a proxy for social mobility. Implications of historical redlining, however, have diminished access to educational opportunities, particularly in marginalized communities. Current literature largely uses traditional metrics, such as per pupil expenditures, to measure educational success; however, this analysis employs more holistic inquiry, leveraging survey data from the NYC Department of Education’s “School Quality Snapshot.” Through spatial analysis and regression models, this research will examine disparities in educational outcomes between redlined neighborhoods across the Bronx, exploring factors …
Stories Of Faith And Community: Russian Orthodox Churches In Binghamton, Deniz Gulay
Stories Of Faith And Community: Russian Orthodox Churches In Binghamton, Deniz Gulay
Research Days Posters 2024
Binghamton has one of the largest concentrations of Orthodox Christians in New York State. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city’s cigar and shoe factories drew immigrants from the most distant corners of Eastern Europe. Within a few short years, an Orthodox Christian community made up of various nationalities flourished in the city, but this unique history has remained largely hidden throughout the past decades. This research will shed light on the role that Orthodox churches played in creating communities among people of Slavic descent and helping them to become "American." It is a story of nationalities, …

Lex Capitalocenae: The Dialectics Of Law And Accumulation In The Capitalist World-Ecology, Jeremy Santora
Research Days Posters 2024
This project aims to investigate the emergence of international law as inextricably tied to the rise of the capitalist world-ecology across the long sixteenth century. Through a world-historical methodology, my project charts the interpenetration of legal doctrine and legal practice in the making of the modern world. After 1492, a transformation took place within the law of nations (jus gentium) from its determination by canonical law within the parameters of Christendom to its determination by merchant law within the parameters of a world-economy. It is the contention of this paper that this transformation was a transformation in the natural law …

A Systematic Review Of K-12 School Shooting Research, Justin J. Joseph, Noe Alexander Aguado, Christopher W. Purser
Politics, Justice, Law, and Philosophy
High-profile school shootings (i.e., rampage school shootings) have fueled empirical and general inquiry into school shooting characteristics and have been a point of emphasis for stakeholders (e.g., parents, teachers, and students) nationwide. The current chapter's goals are to provide a systematic overview of the available evidence examining school shooting incidents. Specifically, this review is intended to gather, summarize, and review relevant peer-reviewed studies on the topic, integrate and identify key findings and themes, identify gaps and limitations in the literature, and discuss implications for directions for future research. Further, it is expected this systematic review can inform practitioners, academics, researchers, …

Migrant Vulnerability To Human Trafficking: A Decade In Review, Elizabeth A. Solis
Migrant Vulnerability To Human Trafficking: A Decade In Review, Elizabeth A. Solis
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Despite the establishment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in 2000, the state and prevalence of human trafficking in the United States has greatly increased. While information and legislation exist, it still remains an under-researched and under-evaluated issue. This study looks through the enacted human trafficking federal legislation over the last decade to track whether migrant vulnerability to human trafficking has been further addressed with the evolution of the issue within the country. To provide a relevant analysis, this study will examine human trafficking legislation through the years of 2013-2023 and will focus on the main research question of …

Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi
Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi
Playwriting (MFA) Theses
Girls’ Studies is a relatively new academic field characterized by its focus on the complexity of girlhood experiences and understanding girl as a unique social identity separate from the notion of future women. In bringing Girls' Studies theory into the work of theatre scholarship and new play development, I present a framework for the interdisciplinary field of Girls' Theatre Studies. Chapter One is an exploration of girlhood presentations in contemporary theatre through a postfeminist lens. Examining the theatrical manifestations of the "female victim-hero” in contemporary presentations of girlhood, I argue that girl audiences are able to feel with and through …

Analysis Of Current Treatment In Addressing Head-Directed Self-Injurious Behavior, Reid Wieczorek
Schultz-Werth Award Papers
The many negative effects of brain damage have been well studied, and some populations are at a higher risk for this type of injury, such as athletes and soldiers. In response, research has led to the development of increased head protection solutions, such as helmets. However, this is not the case for all at-risk populations of head trauma, specifically individuals who engage in headdirected self-injurious behavior. This study was conducted to assess the ways in which BCBAs treat clients who engage in this behavior. The results yielded information on some key client demographics and different treatment strategies used to intervene …

Schultz-Werth Award Papers
There are benefits from laboratory experiences, like increased student engagement (Ra’anon, 2005) and preparation for graduate school (McDonough, n.d.). Specifically, there are benefits from working in a live animal laboratory using operant chambers. It is not feasible for many universities to have live animal laboratories due to factors such as cost of animal care, maintenance, and ethical concerns, so many students have no laboratory experience. The current study sought to evaluate the CyberRat (Ray, 2019) software as an alternative to live rat laboratories. The variability of CyberRat was assessed via a Turing test, thus determining how realistic CyberRat is. To …

Decoding The Self-Tracking Symbols Of Wilford Woodruff’S Journals, Joshua M. Matson
BYU Studies
Wilford Woodruff’s journals have been celebrated as one of the greatest textual records of the Restoration. A prominent, yet almost entirely unexplored, component of Woodruff’s journals is his creating, implementing, and consistently drawing symbols and pictures alongside his near-daily autobiographical record. Within his fifteen-volume journal spanning more than a sixty-year period, Woodruff drew approximately nine thousand images. The first of these symbols appears in an entry dated March 23, 1837, and the final image is drawn on March 19, 1897. These images can be divided into two groups. The first are unique illustrations that appear erratically throughout the journals and …

Feeling Trapped: Exploring The Lived Psychosocial Experiences Of First-Generation College Students, Carmen Maria Moedano
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
Limited research exists that examines the lived experiences of psychosocial stress among first-generation college students. I utilize a trauma informed conceptual framework using the acculturative stress model and concepts from collective trauma to describe how colleges can function as a microcosm of the real world and place first-generation college students at increased vulnerability on top of the normative developmental challenges of young adulthood. I conducted a qualitative research study using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) research design to gain insights from first-generation college students about their lived experiences related to psychosocial distress. This study included purposive sampling at one four-year …

In Pakistan, the enormous 2010 floods inflicted unprecedented destruction to 0.5 million houses in South Punjab. This study was conducted in Muzaffargarh, a district of the Punjab province of Pakistan, one of the worst affected areas during the 2010 floods. As an adaptation and disaster risk reduction measure, an International NGO in collaboration with the Government of the Punjab province constructed 1274 houses for flood-affected communities. The houses were allocated through a lottery method. Initially, the allottees moved to the new settlements for the sake of possession. However, over time, it was observed that many flood-affected individuals sold out or …

Asian Americans are one of the most striking and undertheorized ethnic groups in the field of innovation. While a prolific ethnic group when it comes to being named as inventors on U.S. patents, very little has been written on this observation, perhaps because of previously limited datasets and unwieldy data analysis on ethnic backgrounds about patenting at the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). Research on inventor diversity and ethnicity in innovation has begun to explore some ethnic groups, but a more holistic account should focus on one particular overlooked group. Recently, entrepreneurship studies concerning ethnicity have shown that …

The landscape of college sports has dramatically changed in recent years. What was once considered a place for amateur athletes pursuing education now partially mirrors, at least for some student-athletes, the structure and financial dynamics of professional leagues such as the NFL, NBA, and MLB. However, the collegiate sports ecosystem still remains distinct, shaped by unique regulatory frameworks governed by the NCAA. This article reviews and analyses the implications of these changes, and focuses on the tax considerations surrounding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights and how the evolving nature of college sports also presents certain tax implications, some of …
