Ecological Validity Of Simulated Ethical Situations In Therapy Part 2, Melissa Chavez Mar 2024

Ecological Validity Of Simulated Ethical Situations In Therapy Part 2, Melissa Chavez

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Psychotherapy recipients seek optimal treatment, emphasizing the importance of therapists undergoing evidence-based training for effective outcomes. Deliberate practice (DP) is a proven method for systematic improvement. While still evolving, DP shows promise in various domains, including psychotherapy, with effective implementation requiring goal setting, feedback, and persistence.

This study introduces videos simulating ethical dilemmas in therapy. To assess the ecological validity of these videos, a survey examines participants' perceptions of realism, difficulty, and anticipated anxiety across 11 ethical scenarios. Participants include undergraduate and graduate students, as well as licensed professionals. This research aims to provide empirical evidence supporting the validity of …

Determining The Barriers To The Use Of Post-Match Fatigue Monitoring In The Rugby Codes: A Concept Mapping Study., Mitch Naughton, Tannath Scott, Dan Weaving, Scott Mclean, Colin Solomon

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 5: Issue 1, Article 3, 2024. The rugby codes (i.e., rugby union, rugby league, rugby sevens [termed ‘rugby’]) are team-sports that impose complex physical demands upon players which in-turn, leads to domain-specific fatigue (e.g., neuromuscular, cardio-autonomic). Quantifying post-match fatigue through various methods and metrics is important to monitor player fatigue status, which influences training readiness. The specific and general barriers limiting the use of post-match fatigue monitoring in rugby are not presently known. Therefore, the aims of this study were to identify specific and general barriers (clusters of specific barriers) to the use …

Quality Expo 2024

Introduction: Barriers to medication access contribute to excess morbidity, mortality, and unnecessary use of healthcare resources. Hospital philanthropic funds assist patients in covering the cost of essential medical needs, which may otherwise be uncovered or unaffordable. Pharmacists have a vital role in ensuring access to medications, however, they are not involved in the fund distribution process. Fund utilization patterns for discharge medications have not yet been evaluated. Objectives: Characterize the use of hospital philanthropic funds to support patient medication access. Characterize patients who receive medications through the hospital philanthropic fund. Identify ways for pharmacy services to help optimize the use …

I Didn’T See It Coming: Navigating An Uncomfortable Episode During Doctoral Research Fieldwork, Narina A. Samah

The Qualitative Report

In this article, I revisit my experiences during my doctoral fieldwork from the lens of a novice qualitative researcher. Initially embracing the role of narrative inquirer, I was in the midst of navigating my inquisitive journey by re-examining my personal practical knowledge as a means to confront my puzzle of practice. Six months of fieldwork allowed me to re-experience my classroom teaching practice through a pair of new eyes. As my research was ending, events took an unexpected turn, leading to the delicate issue of female teacher/lecturer-student relationships during research fieldwork and the dilemma of deciding whether to include or …

Fold In The Cheese? An Approach To Teaching Qualitative Data Analysis To Students, Jennifer Jackson Phd Mar 2024

Fold In The Cheese? An Approach To Teaching Qualitative Data Analysis To Students, Jennifer Jackson Phd

The Qualitative Report

There are many elements of qualitative data analysis that may appear intangible to novice researchers. In this article, I present an approach to a data analysis workshop with students, where I do my best to avoid the instruction to “fold in the cheese,” as per the television series Schitt’s Creek. Students attend 90-minute workshops where they use an assortment of buttons to practice different strategies of qualitative analysis. The tactile mechanism of sorting objects has proven invaluable in workshops, as it helps students to physically organize their thoughts and takes pressure off to find the “right” answer. The nature of …

Distributed Neural Representations Of Conditioned Threat In The Human Brain, Zhenfu Wen, Edward F Pace-Schott, Sara W Lazar, Jörgen Rosén, Fredrik Åhs, Elizabeth A Phelps, Joseph E Ledoux, Mohammed R Milad

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Detecting and responding to threat engages several neural nodes including the amygdala, hippocampus, insular cortex, and medial prefrontal cortices. Recent propositions call for the integration of more distributed neural nodes that process sensory and cognitive facets related to threat. Integrative, sensitive, and reproducible distributed neural decoders for the detection and response to threat and safety have yet to be established. We combine functional MRI data across varying threat conditioning and negative affect paradigms from 1465 participants with multivariate pattern analysis to investigate distributed neural representations of threat and safety. The trained decoders sensitively and specifically distinguish between threat and safety …

Black Social Workers Use Of Racial Identity And Self Concept In The Workplace, Shielah Monique Deblanc

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Navigating the Black professional identity in U.S. work environments poses challenges for social workers, with limited research addressing racial salience, power dynamics, and self-concept within their specific workplace contexts. Using self-concept theory, and the multidimensional model of racial identity as theoretical and conceptual frameworks, the purpose of this research was to examine Black social workers’ attitudes about self-concept using racial salience, power distance, and employee tenure as predictors. Using web-based surveys to collect data, a purposive sample of 77 participants were used to complete demographic information, a measure of centrality to gauge racial salience Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity, a …

A Qualitative Study Investigating Perinatal Mental Health Screening: “It’S Maternal Mental Health From A Mom’S Point Of View”, Tess A. Carlson, Jessica L. Liddell, Sarah Reese

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Purpose:

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADS) affect approximately 1 in 3 birthing people in Montana, impacting parent-infant bonding and contributing to high rates of maternal suicide. 95-97% of birthing people suffering from PMADS do not reach full remission. This study investigates the barriers that prevent effective screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) for PMADS, from the perspective of birthing people in Montana. The results point to systems-level barriers and supports to SBIRT, and provide recommendations for improvements to the perinatal screening process.

Methods:

In 2021, I conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 people, who had given birth in …

Nonprofit Leader Experiences In Sector-Bending After Lean Six Sigma Training: Tension, Concepts, And Changed Behaviors, Beverly Codallos Mar 2024

Nonprofit Leader Experiences In Sector-Bending After Lean Six Sigma Training: Tension, Concepts, And Changed Behaviors, Beverly Codallos

Dissertations

Government, business, and nonprofit represent three distinct types of organizations governed by different legal frameworks designed to facilitate collective action (DiMaggio & Anheier, 1990). The emergence of hybrid forms and increasing isomorphic pressures in the nonprofit sector (Bromley & Meyer, 2017; McCambridge, 2014) have challenged the traditional separation of organizational forms. This study explored the phenomenon popularized as sector-bending, “a wide variety of approaches, activities, and relationships that are blurring the distinctions between nonprofit and for-profit organizations, either because they are behaving more similarly, operating in the same realms, or both” (Dees & Anderson, 2003, pg. 16). This qualitative study …

Continuing The Legacy: Navigating Grief And Loss While Pursuing A Degree, Sharon Lewis, Hope Charles, Nivischi Edwards

National Cross-Cultural Counseling & Education Conference for Research, Action & Change (2016-2024)

A 2013 study found 74.8% of Black girls graduated high school, while only 37.6% of the Black females in early adulthood were enrolled in college (Kalu, 2022). The added pressure of navigating grief while also endeavoring higher education only exacerbates that statistic. Learning to process grief healthfully is a useful lesson to ensure one’s ability to thrive during their grief.
