Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults (Moreland et al., 2020).
Methods: A quality improvement project that included a fall bundle was implemented in a primary clinic. A …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Ableist Microaggressions, Jennifer M. Cook, Melissa Deroche, Lee Za Ong
A Qualitative Analysis Of Ableist Microaggressions, Jennifer M. Cook, Melissa Deroche, Lee Za Ong
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
The phenomenon of microaggressions is well established within the counseling literature, particularly as it relates to race, ethnicity, gender, and affectual orientation. However, research related to disability or ableist microaggressions is still in its infancy, so counseling professionals have limited information about experiences of disability and ableist microaggressions. The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to describe participants’ self-reported experiences with ableist microaggressions. Participants (N = 90) had a diagnosed disability and the majority (91.11%) identified as having two or more nondominant identities beyond their disability. We report two categories and 10 themes. While participants were part of …

Ableist Microaggressions, Disability Characteristics, And Nondominant Identities, Melissa Deroche, Lee Za Ong, Jennifer M. Cook
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Microaggressions are commonplace overt and covert forms of discrimination that convey disparaging messages to individuals who hold marginalized identities, including people with disabilities (PWD). Although PWD are a prevalent nondominant identity group in the United States, little is known about the occurrence of ableist microaggressions in this culturally diverse community, including how ableist microaggressions are experienced based on disability characteristics and other nondominant identities. A sample consisting of 201 PWD completed an electronic survey that examined the occurrence of ableist microaggressions based on visibility of disability, type of disability, and nondominant sociocultural identities. We found that PWD have a moderate …
Examining Information Systems Use To Facilitate The Workplace Accommodation Process, Shiya Cao
Examining Information Systems Use To Facilitate The Workplace Accommodation Process, Shiya Cao
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: The workplace accommodation process is often affected by ineffective and inefficient communications and information exchanges among disabled employees and other stakeholders. Information systems (IS) can play a key role in facilitating a more effective and efficient accommodation process since IS has been shown to facilitate business processes and effect positive organizational changes.
OBJECTIVE: Since there is little to no research that exists on IS use to facilitate the workplace accommodation process, this paper, as a critical first step, examines how IS have been used in the accommodation process.
METHODS: Thirty-six interviews were conducted with disabled employees from various organizations. …

Supporting Children’S Eating Behavior In A Preschool Classroom, Olajumoke Leshi
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
Food selectivity, commonly observed in young children, has a significant effect on their health outcomes, and this poses a major challenge for parents and caregivers. This proposed study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a teaching package comprising prompting, shaping, and reinforcement strategies in enhancing exploratory eating behaviors among preschool children displaying food selectivity in a classroom setting. The study seeks to answer the research question: does the delivery of a teaching package consisting of prompting, shaping, and reinforcement result in an increase in exploratory eating behaviors (touch, smell, taste) by young children displaying food selectivity? This study will use …

Idea Manifestation Determination Review As Restorative Practice, Matt Saleh, Barbara J. Hickman, Angela M. T. Prince, Lawanda H. Cook, Jackie Bickford, Kristie Chu, Erika Kitsantas
Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity
This article examines the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which guarantees students with disabilities access to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). The IDEA aims to provide equal educational opportunities for students with disabilities, addressing inequitable exclusions from public schools. Despite its protections, including procedural safeguards like the Manifestation Determination Review (MDR), which prevents unjust removal due to disciplinary actions, students with disabilities remain disproportionately affected by suspensions, expulsions, and arrests, with these disparities exacerbated by race, poverty, and other intersectional factors. The essay highlights compliance concerns with the MDR, particularly its inconsistent …

Prevalence Of Depression And Suicidal Ideation In First-Generation College Students As Compared To Their Non-First-Generation Peers, Abigail A. Wellings
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
First-generation college students face numerous challenges and barriers in academia and related areas that impact their mental health in a manner that their non-first-generation peers may not experience. This population reports higher incidences of stress and distress, depression, and anxiety. However, little is known about the prevalence of suicidal ideation in this population. The current study hypothesized a difference between first-generation students and non-first-generation students on depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. Participant data was gathered from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH) 2015-2016 data set. Primary analyses will be independent samples t-tests and hierarchical linear regression. Results showed a …
Collectivism And Efficacy: Relationship To Academic Performance In Early Adolescents, Richvinder Kaur
Collectivism And Efficacy: Relationship To Academic Performance In Early Adolescents, Richvinder Kaur
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
This study explored the mathematics efficacy beliefs of 270 South Asian (Indo American) immigrant and Anglo American nonimmigrant 7th grade students. Self-efficacy beliefs strongly predicted mathematics performance for both cultural groups, but there were differences between the 2 groups in the sources of self-efficacy, the predictiveness of the secondary motivation variables. It is argued that the Indo American students are more vertical or hierarchical than the Anglo-American students and that comparison with others strongly influences their motivation beliefs and the formation of their efficacy beliefs. Self-efficacy in some cultures may be more other-oriented than is typically seen in Western cultures. …

Major: Counselor Education
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
The study focuses mainly on counselors-in-training self-efficacy and the impact of clinical supervision. The sample size of 227 counselors-in-training all received some type of clinical supervision. The deliverance of clinical supervision did not have any significance between them. Therefore, virtual clinical supervision is just as effective as face-to-face clinical supervision. Also, the counselors-in-training who were in internship class had a much higher level of self-efficacy than the counselors-in-training in the technique …
Measuring Interprofessional Practice Skills In Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Students, Kelly Free Jackson
Measuring Interprofessional Practice Skills In Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Students, Kelly Free Jackson
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Interprofessional practice has become a key component of health professions training programs in recent years as health care has shifted to a more team-based approach to patient care. Because of this, health professions training programs have been tasked with ensuring that students receive adequate training prior to graduation. In the field of speech-language pathology, limited research has shown the best practices in measuring the interprofessional practice skills of speech-language pathology graduate students. Such scant evidence warrants the need for further research on viable measurement tools for interprofessional practice skill development in speech-language pathology. This dissertation presents a three-phase project focusing …

Life After Discharge: Predicting Longitudinal Trajectories Of Community Integration And Global Functioning In Black Individual With Traumatic Brain Injury, Chimdindu Ohayagha
Life After Discharge: Predicting Longitudinal Trajectories Of Community Integration And Global Functioning In Black Individual With Traumatic Brain Injury, Chimdindu Ohayagha
Theses and Dissertations
The onset of traumatic brain injury (TBI) begins a chronic health pathway that contributes to various impairments and comorbidities across the lifespan. Common consequences of TBI include mental health issues, cognitive impairments, and reduced functional independence, all of which impact how an individual integrates into their community. Community integration is a primary goal for rehabilitation after TBI. Studies show that racially/ethnically minoritized individuals have a higher incidence of TBI, higher rates of mortality, and report poorer functional and community integration outcomes. Limited studies have explored longitudinal outcomes of community integration in a Black-only sample of individuals with TBI. Additionally, no …
“Everyone Else Gets To Have The American Dream:” How Social Security Disability Policy Shapes Disability Identity, Katie Savin
“Everyone Else Gets To Have The American Dream:” How Social Security Disability Policy Shapes Disability Identity, Katie Savin
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In the United States welfare state, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is the primary institution that shapes the disability experience through its disability benefit programs. This study used qualitative methods to explore 33 disabled adult beneficiaries’ experience with SSI/SSDI policy administration and the impact on their sense of worth, self-concept, and identity. Critical Disability Studies and a constructivist grounded theory approach drove data analysis. What emerged from the data was a negative disability identity experience referred to as the Social Security model of disability. Capitalist ideals that assign morality to formal work meant that disabled participants faced exclusion and stigma …

Toward Equal Access: A Model For Lay Advocacy Programs Serving People Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Melissa Bell
JADARA
Advocacy programs are prevalent among state government agencies that specialize in serving persons who are deaf or hard of hearing around the United States. The work is crucial to ensuring equal access and equal opportunity, yet the lay advocacy profession is not yet formalized with certification, ethical standards, or training programs for advocates serving this population. Research was conducted to advance efforts to maximize these programs’ effectiveness by compiling components of an ideal model for lay advocacy programs. Directors from state agencies that specialize in serving this population around the country refined the model and described the structure of their …
Eating Concerns And Self-Injury Among Collegiate Populations: A Comparison Of Sexual Orientation Groups, Matthew Kasopsky
Eating Concerns And Self-Injury Among Collegiate Populations: A Comparison Of Sexual Orientation Groups, Matthew Kasopsky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined the prevalence of eating concerns and nonsuicidal self-injurious behaviors (NSSIB) in college students seeking services at college and university counseling centers (UCCs), focusing on whether sexual minority students experience these issues at higher rates than their heterosexual peers. Eating concerns and NSSIB are understudied among sexual minority individuals. Previous research has demonstrated that through prejudice, stigma, and social stress, sexual minority individuals may be at a higher risk of developing mental health concerns and conditions than their heterosexual counterparts. The present study used a cross-sectional design to examine data from a sample of collegiate clients nationwide. Data …
