Identifying Aircraft Damage Mitigating Factors With Explainable Artificial Intelligence (Xai): An Evidence-Based Approach To Rule-Making For Pilot Training Schools, Ryan Zierman, Burak Cankaya

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Recent pilot shortages have brought pilot training into focus as the industry attempts to rectify a compounding problem. The FAA has implemented some recent rule-making regarding pilot training that has left the General Aviation community questioning the motive or justification behind the rules. FAA incident data are inconsistent, specifically with aviation activity in general; flight activity that does not result in an accident or incident is not recorded for analysis. Despite the present shortcomings in the AIDS data, applying Machine Learning techniques make it possible to predict what characteristics mitigate aircraft damage during an incident (AUC=0.913, Accuracy=97%, Recall=84%, Precision=89%). Machine …

Low-Resource Automatic Speech Recognition Domain Adaptation – A Case-Study In Aviation Maintenance, Nadine Amin, Tracy L. Yother, Julia Rayz

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

With timeliness and efficiency being critical in the aviation maintenance industry, the need has been growing for smart technological solutions that optimize and streamline the different underlying tasks (Bergkvist & Sabbagh, 2021). One such task is the technical documentation of the performed maintenance operations (Chandola et al., 2022). Instead of manual documentation, voice tools that transcribe spoken logbook entries allow technicians to document their work right away in a hands-free and time efficient manner. However, an accurate automatic speech recognition (ASR) model requires large training corpora (Siyaev & Jo, 2021a), which are lacking in the domain of aviation maintenance. In …

Operationalising Progressive Ideas About Property: Resilient Property, Scale, And Systemic Compromise, Marc L. Roark, Lorna Fox O'Mahony

Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works

Property theory is at a crossroads. In recent decades, scholars seeking to advance progressive ideas about property have embraced ‘Progressive Property’ theories that seek to advance the goals of social justice and the common good, offering a vital counter-weight to utilitarian and neo-conservative accounts of property. Progressive Property theories seek to correct an imbalance in American property discourse which—across the temporal scale—has sustained a range of narratives and normative commitments, but which has veered towards extreme acquisitive individualism and the rhetoric of property absolutism since the 1970s. The idea that individual property rights are not absolute but defined by the …

The Unintended Consequences Of Torture's Ineffectiveness, Russell Christopher Jan 2024

The Unintended Consequences Of Torture's Ineffectiveness, Russell Christopher

Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works

Whether torture to extract true information—for example, military secrets or the location of a terrorist-planted bomb—is morally permissible and empirically effective is widely disputed. But many agree that such torture’s effectiveness is a necessary condition for its permissibility; if ineffective, then it is impermissible. Thus, the empirical issue has become crucial in deciding the moral issue. This Article addresses the empirical issue with a novel, non-empirical argument. Torture’s ineffectiveness not only ensures torture’s impermissibility but also exposes torture victims to criminal liability for any offenses they are tortured into committing. With torture as the most extreme and horrific form of …
