How Chatbots Augment Human Intelligence In Customer Services: A Mixed-Methods Study, Xiaolin Lin, Xuequn Wang, Bin Shao, Joseph Taylor
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Although artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled chatbots have been increasingly incorporated into firms’ business processes, such as customer service, they are still ineffective at handling unstructured tasks. Therefore, organizations might adopt chatbots to cut down the workforce for structured tasks and augment the remaining employees in unstructured tasks. Although there are substantial workforce implications for rebalancing work activities, few studies have assessed chatbots from the augmentation angle by focusing on employees’ performance, perhaps because of the lack of a theoretical foundation and research on this new phenomenon within organizations. Using a mixed-methods design, we developed a model illustrating the impact of chatbots …

Students' Preferences For Setting And/Or Mixed-Ability Grouping In Secondary School Physical Education In England, Shaun D. Wilkinson, Dawn Penney
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
There is an extensive international literature on different forms of ability grouping in schools, much of which describes their impact on students' academic achievement, motivation, self-concept and/or attitudes towards learning. Comparatively little research has focused on students' perspectives of these practices, while the research that has been conducted has primarily focused on mathematics, English and science. There is a conspicuous and arguably significant absence of research that explores students' perspectives on different forms of ability grouping in other areas of the school curriculum, including physical education (PE). In contrast to the relative privacy of classroom-based subjects, students' bodies, physical competencies …

Where Are The Diverse Families In Australian Children’S Literature? Impacts And Consideration For Language And Literacy In The Early Years, Helen Adam, Sally Murphy, Yvonne Urquhart, Katira Ahmed
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
A lack of representation of diverse families in children’s books can affirm insecurities and contribute to a sense of “otherness”. This study reports on the representation of family diversity in award-listed Australian children’s picture books. A critical theoretical framework was employed to analyse both texts and images. This study found a lack of diverse family structures in children’s books, especially LGBTIQA+, foster, step and blended families. This paper argues that to ensure inclusive and equitable literacy learning opportunities for all, educators need to go beyond award-listed books when selecting books for early literacy environments.

Infrared Ship Segmentation Based On Weakly-Supervised And Semi-Supervised Learning, Isa Ali Ibrahim, Abdallah Namoun, Sami Ullah, Hisham Alasmary, Muhammad Waqas, Iftekhar Ahmad
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Existing fully-supervised semantic segmentation methods have achieved good performance. However, they all rely on high-quality pixel-level labels. To minimize the annotation costs, weakly-supervised methods or semi-supervised methods are proposed. When such methods are applied to the infrared ship image segmentation, inaccurate object localization occurs, leading to poor segmentation results. In this paper, we propose an infrared ship segmentation (ISS) method based on weakly-supervised and semi-supervised learning, aiming to improve the performance of ISS by combining the advantages of two learning methods. It uses only image-level labels and a minimal number of pixel-level labels to segment different classes of infrared ships. …

Movement of animals, habitat connectivity, and nutrient transport are key elements in the ecological functioning of coral reef ecosystems. However, most studies have focused on the diurnal component of these aspects; nocturnal patterns are less known. Our study aims to address this knowledge gap by assessing diel movement patterns in ecologically and commercially important nocturnal coral reef fishes. We evaluate 122-days of acoustic telemetry data from 4 nocturnal species in 2 coral reef fish families (Haemulidae and Lutjanidae) on the Great Barrier Reef. For all species, we found a clear division between daytime resting areas on the reef and a …

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) has already proven to be an effective multiple access scheme for 5th Generation (5G) wireless networks. It provides improved performance in terms of system throughput, spectral efficiency, fairness, and energy efficiency (EE). However, in conventional NOMA networks, performance degradation still exists because of the stochastic behavior of wireless channels. To combat this challenge, the concept of Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) has risen to prominence as a low-cost intelligent solution for Beyond 5G (B5G) networks. In this paper, a modeling primer based on the integration of these two cutting-edge technologies, i.e., IRS and NOMA, for B5G wireless …

INTRODUCTION: We investigated longitudinal associations between self-reported exercise and Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related biomarkers in individuals with autosomal dominant AD (ADAD) mutations. METHODS: Participants were 308 ADAD mutation carriers aged 39.7 ± 10.8 years from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer's Network. Weekly exercise volume was measured via questionnaire and associations with brain volume (magnetic resonance imaging), cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, and brain amyloid beta (Aβ) measured by positron emission tomography were investigated. RESULTS: Greater volume of weekly exercise at baseline was associated with slower accumulation of brain Aβ at preclinical disease stages β = –0.16 [–0.23 to –0.08], and a slower decline in …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Aim: To explore the gender pay gap among the Australian nursing workforce and identify reasons for such a gap. Background: Gender discrimination exists in nursing, with men having a higher rate of pay and a faster rate of career progression, irrespective of experience and qualifications. In addition, men are shown to have a greater representation in leadership roles compared to the proportion of men in the profession. Methods: The study uses a retrospective, observational survey design of graduate nurses from all Australian universities. Findings: The gender wage gap was around 4% at six months after graduation, increasing to 13% at …

How does Australia's latest Indigenous defeat relate to Environmental Education? The answer is direct complicity. This paper begins with the premise that the failure of Australia's 2023 referendum on "The Voice to Parliament"is directly connected with education. The chapter builds on the proposition that local and Indigenous public knowledge could - and should - be the heart of environmental education. We apply a post-qualitative practice that is underpinned by innovative feminisms and the post-qualitative methods within a Multispecies Collaboratory, an experimental way of transforming our learning by attending to the responsive, relational world of all beings. We use this practice …
