Foundation Of Sand: The Eisenhower Doctrine And The 1958 Lebanese Crisis, Douglas Provenzano Jan 2024

Foundation Of Sand: The Eisenhower Doctrine And The 1958 Lebanese Crisis, Douglas Provenzano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Occurring in the context of the Cold War, the 1958 Lebanese Crisis forced U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and top policymakers to balance a multitude of factors when considering an appropriate response to the crisis. While Eisenhower claimed publicly that Operation Blue Bat was an intervention aimed at containing the every looming threat of communism, meeting records of top U.S. policy makers contradict such explanations and offer insight to the President’s true motivations. Eisenhower instead sought to maintain U.S. influence among a coalition of Middle Eastern conservative governments operating in a U.S. led regional military alliance. The crisis forced the …

BACKGROUND: Among the most common mucosal viral infections in infants are rotavirus, one of the main causes of severe gastroenteritis in infants and children up to 5 years, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), one of the leading causes of lower respiratory tract infections. Both human milk and bovine milk derived factors may provide protection against mucosal viral infections. More recently, a similar activity of milk derived proteins was suggested for SARS-CoV-2. The goal of the current study was to test antiviral activity of the bovine milkfat globule membrane (MFGM) against rotavirus, RSV and SARS-CoV-2 and to further characterize MFGM-enriched whey …

Hypoxia Challenges In Estuarine Environments: Effects On Early Fish Development And Lipid Utilization, Magaleate Kostelnik Jan 2024

Hypoxia Challenges In Estuarine Environments: Effects On Early Fish Development And Lipid Utilization, Magaleate Kostelnik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The distribution and intensity of hypoxia (low dissolved oxygen, DO) is increasing due to eutrophication and algal blooms in estuaries like those in the Gulf of Mexico and the Indian River Lagoon. The objective of this study is to determine how low DO affects the development and lipid utilization of the Florida Pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) and Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus). Fertilized eggs were incubated in two DO hypoxia treatments: severe (20% DO saturation, 1.6 mg/L), moderate (50% DO saturation, 3.9 mg/L), and normoxia (100% DO saturation, 7.6 mg/L). Eggs and larvae were sampled at 24-hours post-fertilization to assess hatch survival, …

Identifying Areas At Risk Of Climate Gentrification In Tampa City, David Alexander Ramirez Jan 2024

Identifying Areas At Risk Of Climate Gentrification In Tampa City, David Alexander Ramirez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Gentrification describes rapid infrastructure development and investment in areas with lower income classes. It may cause potential erasure of the original neighborhood's unique culture and the displacement of residents. Due to rising sea levels and the increase in the frequency and intensity of storms, the inundation of Florida will increase as time passes. This creates an ironic relationship where historical coastal areas inhabited by an affluent population will move inland to historically lower-income populations. This thesis developed a Climate Gentrification Index (CGI) to identify areas at risk of gentrification caused by inundation of storm scenarios in Tampa City, Florida. Socioeconomic …

Influence Of Deformation Constraints Of Honeycomb Core Cells On The Bending Stiffness Of Single-Face Sandwich, Mustafa Oguzhan Ayanoglu Jan 2024

Influence Of Deformation Constraints Of Honeycomb Core Cells On The Bending Stiffness Of Single-Face Sandwich, Mustafa Oguzhan Ayanoglu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This research focuses on deformation constraints of honeycomb core cells in a sandwich imposed by bonds to the face sheets. Specifically, the influence of one-sided core constraints on the bending stiffness of a single-face honeycomb core sandwich is examined. To characterize the unconstrained in-plane compressive response of honeycomb core, a range of honeycomb cores was experimentally examined. Cores with a thin cell wall displayed extensive bending deformation of inclined cell walls while cores with thicker walls failed by a shear-type instability of the cells indicated by tilting of vertical cell wall segments. The modulus and compressive strength of the core …

Identifying Epigenetic Modifications To Combat Resistance To The Chemotherapeutic Agent Doxorubicin, Anna Lesley Kingham Jan 2024

Identifying Epigenetic Modifications To Combat Resistance To The Chemotherapeutic Agent Doxorubicin, Anna Lesley Kingham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

There has been substantial progress in cancer research that has markedly enhanced patient outcomes. However, chemotherapy resistance persists and often leads to multidrug resistance, rendering cancer cells unresponsive to multiple chemotherapy drugs, presenting a significant challenge in the effective treatment of the disease. Dysregulation in gene expression patterns caused by abnormalities in epigenetic mechanisms have been identified as contributing factors to the development and progression of cancer. Epigenetic research offers potential to discover drugs that target specific epigenetic modifications to regulate gene expression patterns in the context of chemotherapy resistance. I hypothesize that histone modifications on histone H3 and histone …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This comparative research identifies and analyzes recurring tropes in the novels Cobra (1972) by Cuban writer Severo Sarduy and La mucama de Omicunlé (2015) by Dominican writer Rita Indiana. Despite the years between the publication of these important Spanish-Caribbean works, they both reveal transformative processes through transgressive writing styles. Seemingly diverse, these novels present a similar plot: a series of violent events that surround the protagonists’ androgyny. Their stories bare a deeper significance as changes to the bodies provoke ruptures that unearth rhizomatic connections with the rest of the surrounding nature, which, of course, has its own histories, different from …
