Enhancing Disaster Preparedness In Nursing Education: A Quality Improvement Approach Using Simulation And Training, Paul Dreater

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background: Natural or artificial disasters threaten safety and continuity in educational settings. The University of San Francisco School of Nursing and Health Professions (USF SONHP) identified a critical gap in its disaster preparedness, underscored by the absence of a comprehensive disaster plan. This shortfall highlights the need for an educational strategy encompassing disaster readiness and response, particularly given the potential for such events to cause substantial harm and disruption.

Local Problem: A gap analysis conducted at the USF SONHP revealed the lack of a structured disaster plan, underlining the urgent need for an initiative to develop and implement a comprehensive …

Deputy Sheriffs’ Experience With Inmate Suicide, Tiffany Buco Dec 2024

Deputy Sheriffs’ Experience With Inmate Suicide, Tiffany Buco

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Deputy sheriffs working in correctional facilities are responsible for enforcing rules and regulations of the facility, supervising inmates, ensuring security, and preventing inmates from escaping. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of deputy sheriffs experiencing an inmate’s death by suicide. The sample for this study consisted of six deputy sheriffs who had been a deputy sheriff for at least 3 years and experienced an inmate suicide. The theoretical foundation applied to this study is the personal construct theory because it requires constructs that are used to make sense of people’s experiences, in this …

Reading Law's Great Unread: Qualitative Computational Methods, Artificial Intelligence And The New Empirical Legal Research, Simon Wallace

PhD Dissertations

How will new computational technologies change legal research and our visions of what law is? Inspired by the work of digital humanists, Bourdieu, and sociologists of literature, this dissertation explores how the methods of “distant reading” can be used to develop new classes of critical insights about law. After situating the project theoretically, this dissertation reports on a series of new computational studies about Canadian law. Chapter 1 measures Canadian statutory and regulatory law, showing that law has grown unevenly over the past decade and a half. Chapter 2 uses new artificial intelligence to transcribe and analyze Supreme Court of …

Nature-Derived Flame Retardant For Cotton Fabrics With Green Coconut Shells, Tarikul Islam, Abdullah Al Rakib Shikder, Md Shahabul Hossen, Md Mazbah Uddin, Md Tanvir Hossain, M. Mahbubul Bashar

Michigan Tech Publications

This study presents an eco-friendly flame-retardant solution for cellulosic fabrics using green coconut shell (GCS) extract and phytic acid (PA). Cellulosic materials are highly flammable and release harmful gases during combustion. Conventional flame retardants may pose environmental and health risks while impacting the fabric quality. GCS extract is a rich source of tannins, phosphorus, silicates, metallic salts, and oxides and is explored as a novel flame retardant (FR) for cotton fabrics. Cotton samples were pretreated with PA and then with varying concentrations of GCS extract using a padding technique. Comprehensive characterization followed, including limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), …

The Role Of Full-Time Job Postings For Postsecondary Cte Faculty In Curriculum Design: A Document Analysis, James Bartlett Ii, Michelle Bartlett

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

This study examines job postings for full-time postsecondary Career Technical Education (CTE) faculty to explore job duties. Document analysis was used on the job postings collected on JobsEQ Real-Time Intelligence for CTE instructors in North Carolina. Over a year, 318 job postings were found through specific search terms in JobsEQ, with 205 retained. Discarded postings were due to duplication, not postsecondary CTE, or part-time positions. Examination of job postings revealed six thematic areas that tie to curricular skills: development process, inputs and standards, content of the CTE curriculum for students, uses of curriculum in the CTE instructor’s role, goals, and …

Taking Up Space And Making Demands: Portland State University Students Construct The Free And Autonomous Refaat Alareer Memorial Library, Aaron Roussell, Anonymous

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Student campus protest has been a hallmark of US social movements for decades. Edited versions of these movements are lauded in university courses on historical social change. Yet a variety of commentators in traditional media, campus administration, and political administration display a calculated confusion when it comes to contemporary campus movements, particularly around Palestine. This article aims to clear up that confusion, outlining the protests and occupations that took place in spring 2024 on the campus of Portland State University and in its renamed Refaat Alareer Memorial Library, setting them in their national (and international) context, and outlining the violent …

Factors Of Police Decision-Making Of Veterans In Crisis, Paul N. Guzman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Since 9/11, the need for veteran crisis intervention has increased. Police agencies often respond to veterans in crisis by deploying officers who have completed Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, and many of the officers are prior military. However, little research has focused specifically on the factors influencing police officers’ decision-making when responding to veterans in crisis. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the association and predictability between event type, veteran behavior, police officer military experience, police officer CIT, and the disposition of veterans as measured by arrest, referral for mental health services, and the use of force. …

Police Officer Perceptions Of Mental Wellbeing Needs: A Multi-Methods Study, Suzanne Hakeos Dec 2024

Police Officer Perceptions Of Mental Wellbeing Needs: A Multi-Methods Study, Suzanne Hakeos

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Police officers are exposed to repeated traumatic exposures (e.g., deaths, abuse, threats to personal and community member safety) and organizational stressors (e.g., poor leadership and support, low job control) throughout their careers. These job-related exposures and stressors have been shown to increase the officers’ risk for developing physical (e.g., cardiovascular disease, sleep deprivation) and mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, hypervigilance, post-traumatic stress disorder, hopelessness, substance abuse, self-isolation, suicidal ideations). Outside of their work environment and duties, factors and stressors related to the officer (e.g., beliefs, values, coping strategies, personality, life experiences), interpersonal relationship dynamics (e.g., work-family demands, conflict, support), …

After The Age Of Discretion: Policing And Privacy In A World Of Automated Roadway Enforcement, Trayce Hockstad, Lawrence Cappello Dec 2024

After The Age Of Discretion: Policing And Privacy In A World Of Automated Roadway Enforcement, Trayce Hockstad, Lawrence Cappello

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Our Fourth Amendment attempts to harmonize in fifty-eight words the tenuous, antagonistic relationship between privacy and public safety. These two values appear to be deadlocked in a contentious legal orbit, leaving behind them a trail of fascinating but foreboding jurisprudence in American law. The fundamental need of individuals for spaces of seclusion from government surveillance has endured a slow siphoning of its constitutional protection by the encroaching definition of the “public” and the perceived need to police every person and place that may be considered so. Nowhere has this proven truer than our nation’s roadways. As the judicial system …

The Legacy Of Section 230: Case History And Legal Perspective On Free Speech Regulation In The Digital Age, Owen Rosenberg Dec 2024

The Legacy Of Section 230: Case History And Legal Perspective On Free Speech Regulation In The Digital Age, Owen Rosenberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis explores the legal evolution and societal implications of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a landmark provision that shields internet platforms from liability for user-generated content. Since its inception, Section 230 has fostered unprecedented growth in digital communication by allowing platforms to host and moderate content without traditional publisher liabilities. However, with the rise of social media and algorithmic content promotion, the statute's broad immunity has sparked intense debates about platform responsibility. Through case analyses—including Reno v. ACLU, Gonzalez v. Google LLC, and Twitter, Inc. v. Taamneh—this study examines how judicial interpretations of Section 230 have adapted …

Nebraska Rural Poll

Executive summary

Most rural Nebraskans support a variety of housing programs and priorities. The support for these various programs was similar to that found in 2016. At least three-quarters of rural Nebraskans would somewhat support or strongly support the following in their community: developing programs to help seniors age in their current home; offering low-interest loans or grants for repair, rehabilitation or home improvement; providing affordable rental housing; establishing a local program that would purchase and remove dilapidated houses making lots available for building; developing senior housing; purchasing, rehabilitating and reselling vacant housing; and establishing a local program that would …

Immigration, Sanctuary Counties, And Crime: A Safety Net For Vulnerable Populations?, Carson Duca Dec 2024

Immigration, Sanctuary Counties, And Crime: A Safety Net For Vulnerable Populations?, Carson Duca

Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses

The literature for the relationship between immigration and crime has been growing in recent decades, but the research on how immigration sanctuary policies are associated with crime is relatively underdeveloped. There is much theory that describes how immigration sanctuary policies could make the police more effective and efficient due to increased correspondence levels, which also has the potential to increase crime reporting rates. The current study advances the extant literature on the relationship between immigration sanctuary policies and crime. To do so, ordinary least squares (OLS) regression techniques are run to analyze how the presence of immigration sanctuary policies along …
