Key Principles For University-Community Partnerships: A Qualitative Case Study Of A Successful Coalition During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Michael Preston Jan 2024

Key Principles For University-Community Partnerships: A Qualitative Case Study Of A Successful Coalition During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Michael Preston

Community Engagement Student Work

Anchor institutions are large place-based organizations such as universities, hospitals, and forprofit and non-profit businesses that invest in their surrounding communities as a way of doing business. However, being an anchor is more than being present; it is a commitment to actively working to reduce disparities and engaging in mutually beneficial community partnerships and collaborations. This capstone is a qualitative case study that explores the dynamics and outcomes of the COVID-19 partnership between Johns Hopkins University and its surrounding community. By delving into the experiences, perspectives, and interactions of the stakeholders involved, this study aims to identify the factors that …

Full Plate Living-Teaching Kitchen: A Sustainable Approach To Employee Health, Amy M. Daniel Jan 2024

Full Plate Living-Teaching Kitchen: A Sustainable Approach To Employee Health, Amy M. Daniel

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Abstract

Insufficient fiber intake is a key contributor to diet-related chronic diseases (DRCD) such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. This evidence-based health promotion program evaluated integrating a teaching kitchen with the Full Plate Living Plan (FPL-TK) to increase daily fiber intake. Grounded in the Social Cognitive Theory, the 8-week employee health promotion program included hands-on culinary demonstrations, a structured FPL nutrition curriculum, and fiber tracking tools to help participants engage and participate in weekly health and wellness changes. The program successfully achieved high engagement rates, with 80% of participants reporting high satisfaction with the program and 100% of participants stating …

Eavesdropping: The Forgotten Public Nuisance In The Age Of Alexa, Julia Keller Jan 2024

Eavesdropping: The Forgotten Public Nuisance In The Age Of Alexa, Julia Keller

Vanderbilt Law Review

Always-listening devices have sparked new concerns about privacy while evading regulation, but a potential solution has existed for hundreds of years: public nuisance.

Public nuisance has been stretched to serve as a basis of liability for some of the most prominent cases of modern mass-tort litigation, such as suits against opioid and tobacco manufacturers for creating products that endanger public health. While targeting conduct that arguably interferes with a right common to the public, this use of public nuisance extends far beyond the original understanding of the doctrine. Public nuisance has not been applied, however, to another prominent contemporary issue: …

United States Of America, In The Forum Of Federations Handbook On Local Government In Federal Systems, Meryl Justin Chertoff Jan 2024

United States Of America, In The Forum Of Federations Handbook On Local Government In Federal Systems, Meryl Justin Chertoff

SALPAL Papers & Reports

Municipalities in the United States (US), particularly those in its largest metropolitan areas, drive economic growth and innovation and are home to the majority of the nation’s population, but their political status under the federal constitutional system of divided government is relatively weak. That does not mean US cities lack political power; it means that the federalist structure weakens, rather than enhances, city power. The US Constitution does not even mention cities, and the US federal structure has not evolved to reflect ‘city power’. There is a mismatch between the rise of cities on the global stage and their role …

Investigating Indicators Of Radicalization Within Political Communities On Reddit, Darian Nigro Jan 2024

Investigating Indicators Of Radicalization Within Political Communities On Reddit, Darian Nigro

Theses & ETDs

Prominent cases of political violence in America are often approached by determining a potential cause and seeking a solution specific to that cause. For example, a mass shooting tied to a political ideology may be approached as the consequence of a nationwide mental health crisis or failures in gun control. However, efforts to understand and prevent such cases may be more successful if these acts are addressed as the result of radicalization: a trackable process that leads to violence. Additionally, the role of internet-based platforms has been questioned in relation to the violent realization of radical ideas. Therefore, researching the …

Getting Off Off-Duty: The Impact Of Dobbs On Police Officers’ Private Sexual Lives, Joshua Arrayales Jan 2024

Getting Off Off-Duty: The Impact Of Dobbs On Police Officers’ Private Sexual Lives, Joshua Arrayales

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Upon its leak and subsequent official release, the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization shocked and worried the nation. Overnight, the Court overturned forty-nine years of precedent. Those forty-nine years of overturned precedent not only implicate the ability to obtain abortion, but also the ability to engage in relationships, marry, make decisions about our own body, and keep our personal lives private. As a result, many advocates worry about the status of fundamental rights since many of those rights relied on the now overturned cases Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey as well as …

Foreign Affairs, Nondelegation, And The Major Questions Doctrine, Curtis Bradley, Jack Goldsmith Jan 2024

Foreign Affairs, Nondelegation, And The Major Questions Doctrine, Curtis Bradley, Jack Goldsmith

Articles

Some of the Supreme Court Justices and scholars who support a reinvigoration of the nondelegation doctrine would allow for an exception for grants of authority relating to foreign affairs. Others have criticized such an exception as unprincipled or as reflecting improper “foreign affairs exceptionalism.” This Article argues against a foreign affairs exception to the nondelegation doctrine but contends that the doctrine should be applied less strictly when a statutory authorization relates to an area of independent presidential power. The President has more independent power relating to foreign affairs than domestic affairs, so this limitation on the nondelegation doctrine will do …

Embedded Researchers In Community Collaborations: Making Data Matter In Addressing The Overdose Crisis In Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Sean P. Varano, Pamela Kelley

Justice Studies Faculty Publications

This article is a story about privilege. The recognition that as an academic, it is a privilege to have a seat at the policymaking table. It is a privilege to be heard, to be valued, and to contribute in ways that impact the lives of real people, in real communities, related to real problems. Researchers who’ve had the opportunity to participate in community-based collaborations know well that such partnerships are built on trust, patience, commitment, and thick skin (Drawbridge, Taheri, & Frost, 2018). When someone allows us in the door it can come with perceived risk. They sometimes open their …

First Amendment Fetishism, John M. Kang Jan 2024

First Amendment Fetishism, John M. Kang

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court, starting in 1971, has lit upon a reckless path of protecting speech that is, by any reasonable measure, appallingly vulgar, emotionally hurtful, and dangerous. Against the wishes of the community, the Court has protected a roster of extremely offensive speech:

• a rageful repetition of the F-word uttered by a teacher before children in a school auditorium

• a White skinhead’s cross burning on the front lawn of a Black family’s house

• the public burning of the American flag by an avowed Communist who hated the United States and who cared nothing for the emotional pain …
