Shaping Outdoor Recreation In Protected Areas: Insights From Factors Influencing Brazilian Protected Area Professionals, Renata Burlamaqui Bradford
Shaping Outdoor Recreation In Protected Areas: Insights From Factors Influencing Brazilian Protected Area Professionals, Renata Burlamaqui Bradford
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The growing demand for outdoor recreation (OR) in protected areas has led to positive and negative impacts on natural and social environments. As stewards of these areas, protected area professionals (PAPs) are responsible for planning and managing this complexity, and yet we know little about the factors influencing their decisions and actions. This study fills this gap by examining how psychological and organizational aspects influence PAPs’ decisions and behavioral intentions toward OR in protected areas. Insights come from the PAPs working at the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), the Brazilian federal agency. ICMBio’s evolving approach toward OR provides …
Explaining Variation In Adoption Of Organizational Innovation: A Social Network Approach, Pooria Assadi
Explaining Variation In Adoption Of Organizational Innovation: A Social Network Approach, Pooria Assadi
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This article draws from the social network theory and examines how a social network approach can contribute to our understanding of the variation in the adoption of innovative, organization-wide information systems that can help businesses achieve sustainable competitive advantage. It highlights how the extant explanations for the adoption of information systems are limited in the way that they primarily assume organizations make innovation adoption decisions in isolation. It does so by building on growing research which recognizes that organizations are not isolated from one another; rather, they are interrelated through their inter-organizational networks which provide unique learning opportunities that are …

Organizational Ghosts: How “Ghostly Encounters” Enable Former Leaders To Influence Current Organizational Members, Jeffrey S. Bednar, Jacob A. Brown
Organizational Ghosts: How “Ghostly Encounters” Enable Former Leaders To Influence Current Organizational Members, Jeffrey S. Bednar, Jacob A. Brown
Faculty Publications
Leadership research has assumed that leader group prototypicality enhances leadership influence during a leader’s tenure. Other leadership research has also assumed that leaders, especially founders, can transformtheir leadership influence into a legacy thatwill survive death and departure from the organization and continue to impact followers. However, to understand the historically embedded nature of leadership influence, it is critical to unpack how specific leaders can become group prototypes and influence followers after their departure. We address this opportunity by examining organizational ghosts—former organizational members who become the ideal prototype of an organization’s values and identity. Drawing on qualitative data from an …

Environmental Information Avoidance Motives On A U.S. Campus, Mary Beth Deline, Laura N. Rickard, Jared V. Worwood, Pei Geng, Elisabeth Reed
Iowa Journal of Communication
Although communication, broadly, is often identified as a key factor across campus sustainability initiatives, few studies have examined specific information behaviors that can affect reception of such efforts. We therefore seek to characterize motives for a key communication barrier to campus sustainability efforts: environmental information avoidance (IA), and to investigate whether these motives differ in relation to known or unknown information. This exploratory study thematically analyzed answers from an open-ended question on a questionnaire with faculty, staff and students on a U.S. university campus. We identified six environmental IA motives, ranging from information overload to efficacy constraints. Correlational analysis found …

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a pivotal technological advancement developed by humans with the aim of enhancing the quality of human existence. It signifies the capacity of a computerized machine resembling a robot to execute tasks typically performed by humans and replicate human behavior. Machine learning (ML), a subfield of AI, involves the construction of systems that acquire the ability to make predictions about new output values by leveraging existing data, without the need for human interaction. Currently, ML has been incorporated into various fields, including but not limited to medical diagnosis, image processing, prediction, classification, learning association, commerce, finance, and …

School of Health Professions
Child maltreatment is one of the nation’s most significant public health concerns. The estimated annual economic burden of child maltreatment in the United States is more than $292 billion (Peterson et al., 2018). In 2021, approximately four million referrals were made to child protective service agencies alleging the maltreatment of more than seven million children (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], 2023). The primary mechanism for evaluating these referrals is the frontline child welfare workforce. Frontline child welfare workers (FCWWs) engage families and make decisions about the safety of children that directly impact children’s futures (Edwards & Wildeman, …

The Anatomy Of Physician Fulfillment: Strategies Beyond Burnout, Brook Hale
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The persistent tension and power struggle between healthcare executives and physicians is a prevalent issue in healthcare organizations, often leading to a culture of organizational mistrust. This dynamic stems from perceived conflicting goals: executives are frequently seen as primarily focused on financial outcomes, while physicians are viewed as resistant to change. This study explored how physician fulfillment is experienced at work, with the ultimate goal of identifying potential interventions to bridge the gap between these groups. There is vast research and literature available regarding burnout in healthcare; this research focused on understanding what physicians find fulfilling in their work and …

Enhancing Erp Auditability And Compliance Using Permissioned Blockchain, A Framework For Transparent And Immutable Enterprise Resource Planning Systems., Manikantha Varaprasad Inakollu
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Enterprise Resource Planning systems serve as the backbone of modern organizational operations, yet their centralized architecture creates significant challenges for auditability and regulatory compliance. This research proposes a permissioned blockchain framework to enhance ERP auditability by creating immutable, transparent, and traceable records of all system transactions and modifications. The study addresses critical gaps in current ERP systems where transaction histories can be altered, audit trails prove insufficient, and compliance verification remains cumbersome. Through examination of existing ERP limitations and blockchain capabilities, we develop an integrated architecture that maintains operational efficiency while providing cryptographic assurance of data integrity. Our framework employs …

Fatigue Reporting In Hellenic Skies: Attitudes, Barriers And Insights From Military, Commercial And General Aviation Pilots, Panagiotis Kioulepoglou, Katerina M. David, Vassilios Nikolaidis, Ilias Makris
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Fatigue has long been a concern in aviation, especially today, with the ever-increasing traffic volume, pilot shortage, and operations that often disrupt the body’s natural biological rhythms. Despite the implementation of sophisticated fatigue reporting schemes, aviation organizations still face challenges, as many studies indicate that pilots often encounter barriers to effectively report their fatigue. As relevant research in Greece was scarce, the main objective of this study was to explore Greek pilots' attitudes towards fatigue reporting, identify the most significant barriers, and recommend mitigation measures based on the participants' perspectives. To that end, 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed …

An Examination Of The Degree To Which The Bia Models Representative Bureaucracy In Selected Lakota Communities, Melissa Eagle Bear
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation focuses on representative bureaucracy as it applies to the administration of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and experienced by Lakota people within two Indian reservation communities. There is limited research on the theory and practice of representative bureaucracy within the context of BIA services. This qualitative study rests on the assumption that representative bureaucracy would lead to positive policy outcomes for Indian people. This research focuses on three specific areas of representative bureaucracy: passive, symbolic, and active representation. This phenomenological research takes as given the centrality of a Lakota epistemology: the beliefs, values and practices embodied in …

Teacher Faith Formation As Response To An “Existential Crisis” In Catholic Schools: Western Canadian Superintendents’ Perspectives, Matt Hoven, Dean Sarnecki, Eugenia Pagotta-Kowalczyk
Journal of Catholic Education
The shortage of teachers who can strongly identify with the religious mission of Catholic schools is at the point of an “existential crisis,” according to a system leader in Catholic schools in Western Canada. Drawing upon exploratory interviews completed with ten chief superintendents (who oversee large school districts), this paper reveals that while school districts offer various forms of faith formation regulating the personal lives of teachers amidst divergences between Church doctrines and social trends is complicated. Because the complexity of teacher faith formation is incredibly difficult to address, we discuss three key areas to renew the state of affairs: …

Linking Ethical Leadership To Organizational Citizenship Behavior And Unethical Pro-Organizational Behavior, Jinhee Kim
Linking Ethical Leadership To Organizational Citizenship Behavior And Unethical Pro-Organizational Behavior, Jinhee Kim
Theses and Dissertations
The significance of ethical leadership has recently garnered considerable attention from both academia and practitioners. However, despite its reputation for facilitating ethical conduct and preventing unethical conduct, there are inconsistencies in the findings about its relationship with (un)ethical pro-organizational behaviors such as organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB). Thus, the purpose of this dissertation is to delve deeply into the influence of ethical leadership on OCB and UPB. Through three interrelated papers, I seek insights into how ethical leadership can drive ethical pro-organizational behaviors that are compatible with broader societal norms. In Paper 1, while noting a …

Engaging With Culturally Relevant Curriculum Development Practice In First-Year Writing Courses Through A Community Of Practice, Mitchell Dallas Herring
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative action research study provides a case study of a community of practice (CoP) comprised of six faculty who teach first-year writing at Southern Technical College (pseudonym) as they engaged with culturally relevant teaching to review their curriculum development practices. The guiding question of this study was: How does engagement with culturally relevant pedagogy within a community of practice impact faculty who teach first-year writing's curriculum development practice, especially given their perceptions of students' needs and literacies? The study used a case study research design to document the faculty's experiences discussing and reflecting on their practice and perceptions of …
How Team Engagement Improved Positive Behavior Intervention And Support, Colleen Canty
How Team Engagement Improved Positive Behavior Intervention And Support, Colleen Canty
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are a continuum of behavior intervention strategies designed for implementation across the student population. The implementation of PBIS has demonstrated positive academic and behavioral outcomes, as well as safe and favorable school culture in the public education setting (Ockerman et al., 2012; Sugai & Horner, 2009). However, in the alternative school setting, results have not been as favorable. “Alternative school programs have also moved towards adopting PBIS framework, however, outcomes have been less positive. Although alternative programs are often more restrictive and specialized because of the intensified needs of their youth, they share instructional, …
How Chatbots Augment Human Intelligence In Customer Services: A Mixed-Methods Study, Xiaolin Lin, Xuequn Wang, Bin Shao, Joseph Taylor
How Chatbots Augment Human Intelligence In Customer Services: A Mixed-Methods Study, Xiaolin Lin, Xuequn Wang, Bin Shao, Joseph Taylor
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Although artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled chatbots have been increasingly incorporated into firms’ business processes, such as customer service, they are still ineffective at handling unstructured tasks. Therefore, organizations might adopt chatbots to cut down the workforce for structured tasks and augment the remaining employees in unstructured tasks. Although there are substantial workforce implications for rebalancing work activities, few studies have assessed chatbots from the augmentation angle by focusing on employees’ performance, perhaps because of the lack of a theoretical foundation and research on this new phenomenon within organizations. Using a mixed-methods design, we developed a model illustrating the impact of chatbots …

Leadership And Environmental Sustainability: An Integrative Conceptual Model Of Multilevel Antecedents And Consequences Of Leader Green Behavior, Hannes Zacher, Clara Kühner, Ian M. Katz, Cort W. Rudolph
Psychology Faculty Publications
Environmental sustainability is a strategic and ethical imperative for organizations, and numerous studies have investigated associations between leadership and employee pro-environmental or “green” behavior. However, these studies have typically focused on leadership styles that conflate leader behavior with its assumed antecedents or consequences. Moreover, the literature on relations between leadership and environmental sustainability constructs is fragmented and in need of systematic integration to effectively guide future research and practice. Accordingly, we pursue three goals in this conceptual paper. First, after a brief review of key insights from extant theoretical and empirical research, we define leadership in the context of environmental …

Psychology Faculty Publications
The article explores the use of social media for employee listening in organizations, highlighting the importance of employee voice and its positive impact on the workplace. It suggests that social media platforms can provide a space for employees to express themselves, share ideas, and connect with others. However, caution is advised when integrating social media into formal workplace decisions and the hiring process due to concerns about fairness, privacy, and discrimination. The article also addresses the challenges faced by minority employees in voicing dissent and the potential for social media to amplify their voices. It recommends consulting the book "Social …
Advanced Practice Providers In Emergency Medicine, Matthew Kalonick
Advanced Practice Providers In Emergency Medicine, Matthew Kalonick
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
The emergency department is at the core of healthcare in western medicine. It is commonly the first site of patient contact prior to admission or surgical intervention. Management of admission and discharge from the ED is integral to efficient flow of hospital operation. The critical operation of the ED has long acted as a barrier for the application of advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners and physician assistants) from being heavily utilized in this setting. As healthcare costs, physician shortages, and the acceptance of APPs has increased over time, EDs have increased their utilization of APPs. However, there remains concerns regarding …

A Critical Incident Analysis Of Humanizing Interactions Between Correctional Officers And People Who Are Incarcerated, Aimee Califano
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The correctional officer (CO) has one of the most critical roles in the correctional setting and is one of the least studied topics amongst criminal justice professionals (Butler et al., 2018). In the United States, a CO’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of an incarcerated individual and the staff that work in the prison setting (Cheek, 1984). Paradoxically, in the United States, the CO works in an organizational system based on deprivation and punishment toward incarcerated people. The United States Prison system’s current structure does not support rehabilitation efforts of incarcerated people and ultimately impacts any …

This study provides a vital contribution to the discourse on women’s career trajectories by amplifying the often-overlooked experiences of women middle-level leaders. Positioned at the intersection of strategic and operational functions, these leaders play a vital role in organizations—developing and motivating employees, driving change, and serving as relationship managers and key connectors to senior leadership. Employing an interpretative phenomenological approach, this study explores the lived experiences of 15 accomplished women middle-level leaders, each with over 15 years of service across private, public, and nonprofit sectors in the United States. Grounded in relational-cultural theory (RCT), career theory, positive work relationships, and …
