Hot Leadership, Cool Leadership: How Education Policies Are Implemented (And Ignored) In Schools, Jeffrey S. Brooks, Melanie C. Brooks Jan 2024

Hot Leadership, Cool Leadership: How Education Policies Are Implemented (And Ignored) In Schools, Jeffrey S. Brooks, Melanie C. Brooks

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The article advances an emergent framework for conceptualizing the relationship between principal leadership and education policy implementation. Based on a qualitative study of school principals and policy implementation in Region X of the Philippines, findings suggested that the way in which policies were interpreted and implemented at the school level was influenced by a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic dynamics and these were shaped in situ by individual, school and community inhibitors and facilitators. These motivations and localized contexts were critical to implementation, and compelled principals to ignore, monitor, or implement education policies as a priority.

Examining Systemic And Dispositional Factors Impacting Historically Disenfranchised Schools Across North Carolina, Raketa Ouedraogo-Thomas

Dissertations

This mixed method sequential explanatory study provided analysis of North Carolina (NC) school leaders’ dispositions in eliminating opportunity gaps, outlined in NC’s strategic plan. The study’s quantitative phase used descriptive and correlation analysis of eight Likert subscales around four tenets of transformative leadership (Shields, 2011) and aspects of critical race theory (Bell, 1992; Ladson-Billings, 1998; Ladson-Billings & Tate, 2006) to understand systemic inequities and leadership attitudes.

The qualitative phase comprised three analyses of education leadership dispositions and systemic factors in NC schools. The first analysis of State Board of Education meeting minutes from 2018–2023 quantified and analyzed utterances of racism …

Steering The Intangible Wheel: Chief Executive Officer Effect On Corporate Cultural Change, Xina Li, Guoli Chen, Rui Shen Jan 2024

Steering The Intangible Wheel: Chief Executive Officer Effect On Corporate Cultural Change, Xina Li, Guoli Chen, Rui Shen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We provide large-scale empirical evidence of how much chief executive officers (CEOs) change corporate culture. To do this, we use employee reviews to measure corporate cultural change in S&P 1500 firms. In a variance decomposition analysis, we find a modest effect of CEOs on corporate cultural change. The effect of CEOs on cultural change is larger than industry effect but smaller than firm effect. Regression analysis in the context of CEO succession further shows consistent evidence of a modest effect of CEO succession on corporate cultural change. In addition, the relationship between CEOs and cultural change is not likely to …

Standardizing Nasogastric Tube Securement: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Shannon Lee Thompkins Jan 2024

Standardizing Nasogastric Tube Securement: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Shannon Lee Thompkins

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Problem: At a large academic medical center located in the northeastern United States, nasogastric tubes (NGT) were traditionally secured with tape. The institutional policy was nonspecific with no written procedure. The inconsistent use of nasal bridle securement devices (NBSD) and predominant use of tape has the potential to lead to a high rate of NGT dislodgement.

Background: NGT complication and dislodgement rates range from 2%-36% (Gimenes et al., 2019). Stabler et al. (2018) report 29%-63% NGT dislodgement rates in critically ill patients. Patients with intracranial hemorrhage dislodge NGTs in 25% of patients (Rahman et al., 2022)

Public - Private In Vietnamese Universities: Exploring Sectoral Distinctiveness In Program Offerings, Lan Hoang

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The public-private issues in higher education have been a longstanding important topic of academic and policy interest, especially in the context of the public - private duality in most higher education systems. With PHE’s impressive growth over the past few decades, now enrolling one third of global HE enrollments, the study of PHE has also been expanded, with several national case studies and world/regional edited books yet being mostly ad hoc with minimal synthesis or comparative analysis (Levy, 2024). The current case study of Vietnam, employing Levy’s double distinctiveness approach in sectoral distinctiveness analysis with the intrasectoral dissection on the …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this qualitative research study is to examine the experiences and perspectives of an urban elementary school principal in relation to culturally competent practices. As schools become increasingly diverse, school leaders must possess a number of cultural competencies to effectively administer and lead. Cultural competency, for this research, is defined as a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or amongst professionals and enables that system, agency, or those professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations (Cross et al., 1989). Culturally competent school leaders realize the process of change begins with …

To break this trajectory, organizational policymakers need to define a clear and sustainable identity management strategy. This paper presents an overview and guidelines to help shape such strategy. It analyzes the key characteristics and trade-offs of today’s identity management models. Moreover, it offers practical recommendations for organizational policymakers when choosing among these models.

This study examines factors contributing to the loss of four grant funded, free use digital humanities websites funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities' Education Development and Demonstration Program, 1996-2003: Decision Point! at Auburn University, Hawthorne in Salem at North Shore Community College (Danvers, MA), the New Deal Network at the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute (Hyde Park, NY), and River Web at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The evidence shows that website loss did not occur suddenly. In all four cases, organizations that accepted program funds to create online materials ultimately failed to develop or continue procedures …

The Influence Of Independent Secondary School Heads On Shaping Organizational Culture, Ian D. Macphail

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

This dissertation examined the experiences and connections between head of school leadership and culture in small, independent boarding schools in New England. This study was the result of the participation of eight heads of school from eight separate institutions, engaging in semi-structured interviews. All of the schools were secular in their practice, all-gender, and had a formal dormitory-based boarding program. Each school enrolled 400 or fewer students, focusing the impact of these leaders on a tighter, interactional lens. This study explored a relatively under-researched area of K-12 education and used exploratory, qualitative methods to gather the stories of these formal …

Distributed Leadership In International Schools Across The Asia Pacific: A Sequential Explanatory Study, Robert A. Appino Jan 2024

Distributed Leadership In International Schools Across The Asia Pacific: A Sequential Explanatory Study, Robert A. Appino

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

This explanatory study examined how distributed leadership is practiced in international schools. This included looking at principals’ readiness to practice a distributed perspective of leadership, how they practice leadership, the opportunities for teacher leadership, and the relationship between distributed leadership practices and school innovation and improvement. Principals have increasingly adopted distributed leadership, sharing responsibilities with others, in response to COVID-19 (Azorin, Harris, & Jones, 2020). However, this response was not by design but to survive (Harris & Jones, 2020). The demands of the pandemic left leaders stretched more than ever, and adopting distributed leadership practices was essential (Harris & Jones, …
