An Exploratory Study Of Ombuds As Agents Of Change: From Observation To Action, Michael A. Wahlgren
An Exploratory Study Of Ombuds As Agents Of Change: From Observation To Action, Michael A. Wahlgren
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on identifying successful approaches used by university ombuds offices to enact change regarding dispute resolution options within their academic institute. The field of Ombuds has grown steadily in North America since the 1970s and is widely used by private industry, academia, and government organizations to deploy alternative dispute resolution techniques, an often cheaper and more successful means of conflict resolution compared to the traditional litigious approach. Identifying how ombuds approach promoting change requires understanding the dispute resolution system and the conditions that produce conflict. Based on interviews with 10 current university ombuds officers from a variety of …

Bottling The “Secret Sauce”: Capturing The Heart Of The East End At Peter Paul Development Center, Melissa E. Abban, Melissa Buckley, Marie Garrenton, Latonja Y. Wright
Doctor of Education Capstones
Peter Paul Development Center (Peter Paul) submitted a Request for Assistance (RFA) to obtain support from a Virginia Commonwealth University Doctorate of Educational Leadership (EdD) Capstone team with documenting programming and principles and evaluating them consistently. To address this request, the team analyzed the context and problem of practice through document review, empathy interviews, partner discussions and site visits. The literature review helped the team design and conduct research, fieldwork, and data analysis to support Peter Paul in standardizing procedures and programs, fostering a culture of institutional knowledge, and effectively communicating impact to stakeholders. The team used a Convergent Parallel …
Congress Is An It: A New View Of Legislative History, Brian D. Feinstein
Congress Is An It: A New View Of Legislative History, Brian D. Feinstein
Emory Law Journal
Prominent judges and scholars have long challenged the use of legislative history in statutory interpretation. Critics point to the privileged role that supposedly unrepresentative committee chairs play in the production of legislative history and a perceived inability to aggregate individual lawmakers’ intentions. These features, the argument goes, cast doubt on the reliability of committee reports, floor speeches, and the like as windows into congressional intent. This critique even comes with a pithy framing: using legislative history to interpret statutes is misguided because “Congress is a ‘they,’ not an ‘it.’”
This widely adopted expression, although appropriate in previous congressional epochs, …
Supervisor Integrity Empowers Employees To Advocate For Diversity In Problematic Climates, Timothy G. Kundro, Brett H. Neely Jr., Cindy P. Muir (Zapata)
Supervisor Integrity Empowers Employees To Advocate For Diversity In Problematic Climates, Timothy G. Kundro, Brett H. Neely Jr., Cindy P. Muir (Zapata)
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Supervisors struggle to encourage employees to engage in diversity advocacy—key behaviors that help promote more equitable workplaces. Research hints that one reason for this struggle may be that employees lack the empowerment to engage in such behaviors. Drawing on perspectives that conceptualize diversity advocacy as a moral and virtuous behavior, we integrate research on leadership and empowerment to suggest that supervisor integrity can empower observers to engage in diversity advocacy. In exploring boundary conditions, we draw on performance models to counterintuitively suggest that this effect is strongest when employees perceive a negative diversity climate, as employees see the greatest need …

Key Issues Of Predictive Analytics Implementation: A Sociotechnical Perspective, Leida Chen, Ravi Nath, Nevina Rocco
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Developing an effective business analytics function within a company has become a crucial component to an organization’s competitive advantage today. Predictive analytics enables an organization to make proactive, data-driven decisions. While companies are increasing their investments in data and analytics technologies, little research effort has been devoted to understanding how to best convert analytics assets into positive business performance. This issue can be best studied from the socio-technical perspective to gain a holistic understanding of the key factors relevant to implementing predictive analytics. Based upon information from structured interviews with information technology and analytics executives of 11 organizations across the …
Relationship-Centered Communication In Breast Cancer Screening: An Interdisciplinary Training Model, Patricia Aideen Ducharme
Relationship-Centered Communication In Breast Cancer Screening: An Interdisciplinary Training Model, Patricia Aideen Ducharme
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Breast cancer screening is essential for early detection and reducing disease progression. However, its underuse contributes to late-stage diagnoses, adverse health consequences, and reduced survival rates. Research has shown that high-quality communication significantly influences women's adherence to breast cancer screening, leading to earlier detection and better health outcomes. However, many healthcare providers receive no formal communication skills training. Healthcare providers who undergo relationship-centered communication (RCC) training demonstrate stronger interpersonal relationships, which result in increased provider-patient satisfaction, more efficient healthcare teams, and improved quality of patient care. To date, most RCC studies have focused predominantly on the physician-patient relationship rather than …
The California Bridge Model For Emergency Department-Initiated Medication-Assisted Treatment For Opioid Use Disorder: Adaptations For Perinatal Hospital Services, Devin C. Thomas
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Background: Poor access to gender-specific, pregnancy-focused medication-assisted treatment for perinatal opioid use disorder greatly contributes to adverse outcomes for pregnant patients, infants, and society, at large. It is well established that Emergency Department-initiated pharmacotherapy for opioid use disorder is safe, effective, and can be rapidly adopted by hospital systems to improve access to care for people who misuse opioids. Like the Emergency Department, perinatal hospital services are well positioned to serve as critical access points in the treatment of perinatal opioid use disorder. However, concerns such as lack of training, workflow inefficiencies, and bias act as barriers to co-located, integrated …
Assumptions, Resources, And Inputs To Case Management: Implications For California’S Regional Center System, Jonathan Flint
Assumptions, Resources, And Inputs To Case Management: Implications For California’S Regional Center System, Jonathan Flint
Master's Projects
This project adds to knowledge of case management assumptions, resources, and inputs for California’s Regional Center system by surveying members of the Service Access and Equity working group, formed by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS). It recommends development of a logic model to evaluate case management activities because their intended societal impacts are difficult to directly measure. Additionally, it adds to the debate on health equity and racial disparities in Medicaid long-term services and supports (LTSS). In 1969, passage of the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act (The Lanterman Act) led to the first and still only entitlement to community-based …

Understanding Early Learning Educator Perspectives On Retention In Western Washington State: A Qualitative Inquiry, Nouanechanh Kitnikone, Susan Lee, Laura Walker
Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations
There is a significant issue surrounding the retention of educators within the early childhood education field. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the fragile system that was already malfunctioning, and there is hyperfocus on determining how to increase early educator retention and reduce attrition levels. This inquiry utilized participatory action research (PAR) through a collaborative partnership with an early learning center in Western Washington State. Researchers used a transformative worldview with an adaptive leadership focus as the theoretical framework with an appreciative inquiry lens. The study aimed to identify factors and motivations that contribute to the retention of educators in the Early …
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Vaginal Breech Birth Training Program, Kathleen Lynch, Rachel Mackriell
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Vaginal Breech Birth Training Program, Kathleen Lynch, Rachel Mackriell
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Introduction: Most providers do not have the skills, knowledge, or confidence to safely support vaginal breech birth (VBB) despite 3-5% of all pregnancies being breech at term. The presence of a provider skilled in VBB reduces risk in VBB, however VBB skills are not a standard part of birth provider training. Identifying an effective instruction method can make VBB training more accessible.
Methods: We conducted a secondary data analysis of 3940 surveys submitted by self-selected participants in an international hybrid VBB training program from May 2021 to February 2024. Pre- to post-training analysis using non-paired t-test and chi-squared comparison was …

Implementation Of Non-Pharmacological Sleep Checklist In Adult Intensive Care Unit (Icu) To Decrease Delirium, Recine Anne Alinea, Nancy Lamptey
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Delirium is a prevalent problem in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients, affecting up to 80% and resulting in poor outcomes such as increased length of stay in the hospital, prolonged hospitalization, cognitive impairment, and sometimes death. Nonpharmacological therapies, particularly those that promote sleep, have been found to prevent delirium.
Objective/Aim: To determine the efficacy of a nonpharmacological sleep checklist intervention in lowering the incidence of delirium in ICU patients and increasing nurses' knowledge and confidence in the implementation of the sleep bundle/checklist.
Method: A quality improvement project with a pre-post mixed methods design was carried out in a 28-bed …
Improving Nutrition Screening Practice In The Hospitalized Heart Failure Patient Population, Amanda J. Bourgeois
Improving Nutrition Screening Practice In The Hospitalized Heart Failure Patient Population, Amanda J. Bourgeois
DNP Projects
Background: Heart Failure is a disease known to affect nearly 6.5 million adults in the United States. Characterized by recurrent hospitalizations, heart failure significantly contributes to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs in the United States and worldwide. Because malnutrition is prevalent in the heart failure population, healthcare providers must perform nutritional assessments on admission to intervene in the case of malnutrition, prevent deterioration, and improve patient prognosis. Without intervention and early identification of malnutrition, heart failure hospitalizations will remain a significant problem.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of an evidence-based educational program for cardiac …
An Educational Intervention On Provider Knowledge Of Hypertension Guidelines And Home Blood Pressure Monitoring, Alison Claire Oesterritter
An Educational Intervention On Provider Knowledge Of Hypertension Guidelines And Home Blood Pressure Monitoring, Alison Claire Oesterritter
DNP Projects
Background: While hypertension is the leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, disease control remains suboptimal. In the U.S., 47% of adults have hypertension, but only 25% are controlled. Despite having quality evidence-based guidelines, many recommendations are not implemented due to clinical inertia, or the tendency to not change therapy when targets aren’t met. Research has shown that this can be overcome with educational programs. Purpose: To provide training on hypertension guidelines and home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) to overcome clinical inertia and improve patient outcomes related to hypertension. Methods: The project was a quasi-experimental, pre- and post- …

Factors That Influence The Use Of Culturally Relevant And Responsive Pedagogies For Elementary School Leaders, Stephanie Lindstrom
Theses and Dissertations
The presence of minority students in public schools has highlighted the need for teachers and school leaders to seek and implement exclusive instructional strategies that will foster cultural diversity. The climate, culture, and vision of a school are a direct reflection of the school’s leadership. The purpose of this study was to explore the cultural readiness of elementary school leaders, as measured by the cultural readiness leadership scale (CRLS), and their beliefs and perceptions of culturally relevant and responsive practices. The foundational philosophy used to support this research was the transformational leadership theory. The research methodology entailed a mixed-method approach …

Scale And Scope: Building Sotl Capacity Through Collaborative Library Partnerships, Laura Cruz, Ellysa Stern Cahoy
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) have long collaborated with academic librarians, especially around the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, but full, reciprocal partnerships are relatively rare. This exploratory, interview- based study seeks to gain insight into how participants (n=4) experienced one such partnership, focused on building institutional capacity for engagement with scoping reviews in SoTL. Our findings reveal that these types of partnerships can have distinctive influences on participating faculty members that extend beyond a single program, service, or project. These insights illuminate the challenges and opportunities long-term partnerships present to both the institutionalization of SoTL and the evolving …
Serving With Pride: Analyzing Lgbtq+ Personnel Policy In The U.S. Military, Sonja Woolley
Serving With Pride: Analyzing Lgbtq+ Personnel Policy In The U.S. Military, Sonja Woolley
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis examines the evolution of LGBTQ+ personnel policies in the U.S. military, analyzing how these changes reflect broader social transformations and the military’s role as both a mirror and catalyst in societal shifts. It traces the historical roots of discriminatory practices against queer and transgender servicemembers, identifying key periods of reform and resistance. Using institutional theory to dissect the mechanisms of policy adaptation, this paper focuses on coercive, mimetic, and normative isomorphism, which illustrate the complex interplay between external societal pressures, internal demands for legitimacy, and the professionalization of the military. Through detailed case studies, the thesis highlights how …

The Clinical Inquiry Process Diagram (V. 5), Roy E. Brown
VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
This updated edition of The Clinical Inquiry Process Diagram improves on the 2023 version. It provides a depiction of the steps involved in the clinical inquiry process, covering research, performance improvement, and evidence-based practice. The revisions in this version emphasize the importance of alerting users to the iterative nature of clinical inquiry and the ongoing need to assess the situation or patient based on evolving evidence. It's crucial to recognize that the clinical inquiry process does not follow a linear, sequential progression. Instead, individuals may find themselves concurrently addressing different aspects of the process or revisiting prior steps as they …

Psychological Safety During The Covid-19 Pandemic Restrictions-A U.S. Healthcare Context, Mary Jean Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The pandemic forced many employees to transition to remote work, leading to concerns about the economic impact and inequities between remote and on-site workers. The shift to remote work has raised psychological safety issues, work-life balance, and employee engagement. The virtual workspace created during the pandemic has highlighted communication challenges, interpersonal dynamics, and maintaining boundaries between work and personal life. Through a quantitative approach, this study explored changes in perceived psychological safety, its relation to the psychosocial impact of COVID-19, and demographic factors, offering the opportunity to gain insights into this unprecedented experience during a global pandemic. Findings showed that …
Navigating Embodied Self-Awareness States To Produce Work-Enhancing Adaptive Stress Responses, Kristina Banfield
Navigating Embodied Self-Awareness States To Produce Work-Enhancing Adaptive Stress Responses, Kristina Banfield
Theses and Dissertations
Work-related stress is increasingly problematic for middle managers and executives, leading to escalating problems of burnout, turnover, diminished performance, and compromised well-being. However, given the same stressor, differential outcomes are observable across individuals, ranging from paralysis to agitation, and even enhanced performance. Individuals’ responses to stress are strongly influenced by their mental models, physiology, and nervous systems—all of which can be deliberately modulated to promote more adaptive stress responses. The purpose of this study was to examine managers’ experiences of their modulated self-awareness states to optimize their stress response for work performance. A purposive sample of 10 senior managers and …

Anchored In Faith, Soaked In Blood: Black Social Activists Strategies For Developing Equitable Policy In Education, Civil Rights, And Citizenship, Sharletta Michelle Green
Theses and Dissertations
Religious beliefs and the use of race to create a narrative of inferiority plague education, civil rights, and citizenship policy development and implementation, causing harm to Black citizens. Public education is the bedrock of a democratic society. Civil rights and the ability to exercise those rights within a country are vital elements of citizenship. A well-educated populace provides a country's position and power. Equitable education, civil rights, and the vestiges of full citizenship in the U.S. for Black people have been a constant battle. This fight has been at the forefront of the demands for this nation since Reconstruction. Black …

Department Chairs’ Impact On The Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Of Their Departments, Nicholas R. Garcia Ii
Theses and Dissertations
Department chairs serve not only as the leaders of their departments but also as middle managers in their schools, colleges, and universities. While many department chairs see their role as having little authority, they still play an integral role in day-to-day campus operations (Hunt & Jones, 2015). As leaders of their departments, chairs can directly influence the department’s organizational culture (Schein, 2010), including the culture of diversity and inclusiveness. Departments nationwide are being held responsible for increasing the diversity of the faculty and responding to students' calls for diversity. Departmental organizational culture and the role of the chairperson are essential …

Assessing Providers’ Readiness To Integrate Mat Services In A Primary Care Setting, Carmen Ingram-Thorpe
Theses and Dissertations
Opioid use disorder is a growing concern in the United States. Despite medication-assisted treatment (MAT) being a more effective treatment option than behavioral treatment alone, primary care providers’ rate of adoption and utilization of MAT has not matched the demand of the opioid crisis. The largest barrier facing our local community is the availability of organizations and providers that can and will actually provide MAT services. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that impact primary care providers’ readiness to treat individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) using MAT. This study used the ADKAR model as framework, which …

Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological study examined how organizations, primarily in the manufacturing and distribution industries, approached the change process to achieve a third-party verified zero waste certification. It investigated how the change process impacted employees’ sense of organizational identity, and what challenges they faced in pursuing certification. Sixteen participants from seven recently certified organizations agreed to be interviewed about their experience. Challenges stemmed most consistently from fiscal misalignment with leadership’s priorities, capacity struggles, and employee disconnection to the certification’s purpose. Participants reported that the most impactful organizational change strategies included clear, positive messaging, investment in employee empowerment and leadership, and consistency throughout …
