National Integration And Institution Building, Haiwen Zhou Jan 2024

National Integration And Institution Building, Haiwen Zhou

Economics Faculty Publications

The mutual dependence between national integration and institution building is established in a formal model. It is shown that a decrease in transportation costs, but not necessarily an increase in population size, reduces the equilibrium number of states and the adoption of rule-based institutions. With endogenous transportation costs or endogenous population size, the unification process can feed on itself. The model is illustrated by the state of Qin's unification of China in 221 BC. During this process of national integration, transformations from relation-based governance to rule-based governance happened.

State Governance And Less-Skilled Migrant Workers In South Korea, Weejun Park Jan 2024

State Governance And Less-Skilled Migrant Workers In South Korea, Weejun Park

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

This dissertation examines the migration governance of South Korea with a focus on the immigration of less-skilled migrant workers. While geographers and broader social scientists have explored this topic, previous studies have two main foci: 1) individual immigrants and their activities; and 2) migration policy development. Despite these studies’ contribution to the scholarship, there seems to be a relative lack of interest in the South Korean state as a potentially crucial actor in governing less-skilled migrant workers. To address this gap, this dissertation draws upon (political) geography, related social sciences, and interdisciplinary fields such as border studies, migration studies, and …

New Principal Perceptions Of Assistant Principal Leadership Experiences That Prepare Assistant Principals For The Principalship, Ralph E. Chew Jan 2024

New Principal Perceptions Of Assistant Principal Leadership Experiences That Prepare Assistant Principals For The Principalship, Ralph E. Chew

Doctor of Education Dissertations

Due to several factors, including salary and increased demands, there is a shortage of qualified leaders to assume the principal role. Although there is a shortage, there is also a bench of credentialed leaders in assistant principals. The problem is identifying how school districts and principals build the capacity of and prepare their assistant principals for the principal role. This study explored how novice principals perceived how their experiences as assistant principals prepared them for the principalship and the perceived role of current principals in preparing their assistant principals for the principalship. An explanatory mixed methods approach was utilized. Novice …

Identifying The Perception And Impact Of Culture On Job Retention At A Local Government Human Services Organization, Shenickie Mauney Ford

Doctor of Education Dissertations

Acknowledging and understanding the factors connected to job retention is a phenomenon that has been studied and researched by many. Retention and turnover within the human services field are also critical as they impact the organization, the employees, and the public. This mixed methods research study collected quantitative and qualitative data. The purpose of this study was to examine organizational culture and the impact of job retention at Help Services Organization (HSO), a North Carolina government agency that provides public services to the community. A 29-question Likert scale survey was administered to 70 employees of HSO. The survey was designed …

Advanced Air Mobility, Economic Impacts, And Equity Considerations, Robert M. Mcnab Jan 2024

Advanced Air Mobility, Economic Impacts, And Equity Considerations, Robert M. Mcnab

Economics Faculty Publications

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) may, in the coming decades, result in tens of thousands of new jobs and billions of dollars in additional economic activity. While much of the discussion surrounding AAM focuses on the technical aspects of the nascent industry, estimates of the potential economic impact vary significantly. Much less attention has been paid in the literature to potential externalities, positive and negative, and how these externalities may impact estimates of economic impact. We argue that much work remains to be done before policy advisors and decisions makers can formulate and implement strategies based on the projections of future …

Trans And Gender Diverse Inclusion In Academic Library Hiring, Keahi K. Adolpho, Stephen G. Krueger, Luke Sutherland, Adrian Williams Jan 2024

Trans And Gender Diverse Inclusion In Academic Library Hiring, Keahi K. Adolpho, Stephen G. Krueger, Luke Sutherland, Adrian Williams

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

We do not know how many trans and gender diverse people work in libraries in the United States. Like the US Census, the American Library Association’s demographic survey of its members (which is by no means a complete or accurate representation of the profession) asks if respondents are male or female (Rosa & Henke, 2017). In addition to erasing anybody who is not one of these two things, this question does not provide information on whether respondents are trans or gender diverse. And yet, we are here: all four of the authors of this chapter are trans people who work …

Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In Talent Acquisition And Retention: A Mixed Methods Study Of Organizational Practices, Dawayne Mcintosh

Doctor of Education Dissertations

This study employed a convergent mixed methods approach to explore diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within Company A (pseudonym). It examined the effectiveness of DEI practices in recruitment and retention, leadership attitudes towards DEI, and overall commitment to fostering an inclusive environment. The conducted survey involved a combination of a Likert scale survey and a few open-ended questions from a pool of participants across the organization. The quantitative data highlighted trends and patterns in DEI practices, while the qualitative data revealed nuanced insights into individual experiences and perceptions. The results provided insights into the DEI initiatives that are in place …

Can Crt Save Dei?: Workplace Diversity, Equity & Inclusion In The Shadow Of Anti-Affirmative Action, Tanya K. Hernandez Jan 2024

Can Crt Save Dei?: Workplace Diversity, Equity & Inclusion In The Shadow Of Anti-Affirmative Action, Tanya K. Hernandez

Faculty Scholarship

Just four years after the nation’s summer of 2020 protests—sparked by the murder of George Floyd— culminated in a racial reckoning in which many organizations across the country instituted racial equity measures and policies, legislators across the nation are enacting anti-Critical Race Theory (CRT) bans in a seeming backlash to this advocacy for racial justice. The bans simultaneously mischaracterize CRT as anti-White discrimination while strategically conflating it with workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Further inflaming the racially hostile public discourse is the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (2023), which greatly narrows …

Fostering Corporate Resilience: Assessing Risk Management Committee Effectiveness In Malaysia’S Telecommunication And Media Sector Pre- And During The Covid-19, Flicia Rimin, Siti Rahayu Beli, Anastasiah Harbi, Imbarine Bujang, Jamaliah Said

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted organizations, underscoring the critical role of financial factors in determining performance. Maintaining a healthy financial stance during crises necessitates effective risk management, prompting the exploration of a Risk Management Committee (RMC) as a focal point for addressing risk issues and managing internal controls. A study spanning 2017 to 2021 assessed 11 listed companies in the Telecommunication and Media Sector, revealing that a combined RMC did not enhance financial performance, indicating its ineffectiveness during the crisis. The study advocates for a separate risk management committee due to the audit committee’s limitations in performing both functions. …

Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera Jan 2024

Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera

World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations

The development of transport systems significantly influences economies, growth, and welfare of populations. However, these systems can have negative consequences, such as water and air pollution, traffic congestion, noise, and biodiversity loss. To address these challenges, it is essential to implement strategies that mitigate negative effects while improving the environmental, social, and economic conditions of the population. In this regard, inland water transport (IWT) is globally recognized as a more sustainable transport alternative due to its high cargo load capacities and comparatively lower environmental and social impacts. In Colombia, the Magdalena River – the country’s most important river basin – …

Jointly Operating A Merged Junior Academy: A Case Study Of Interracial Cooperation In Seventh-Day Adventist Education In North America, Fabian S. Reid

Dissertations

Problem

Despite the landmark 1954 US Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education that rules segregated schools unconstitutional, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America continues to operate segregated schools in close proximity, a practice rooted in a 1944 General Conference vote that allowed the establishment of separate regional (predominantly Black) and state (predominantly White) conferences within the same geographical regions (a conference is a group of churches, schools, and other institutions within a specified geographic region with one central administrative body). This dual system persists even as declining enrollments and frequent school closures prompt consideration of school …

Ngo Navigators, Information Support, And Parental Assistance With Pk-12 School Decisions, Jason E. Saltmarsh

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

This study provides empirical insights into the perceptions and agency of navigators who provide school selection assistance and this NGO’s unique insider–outsider status. As semi-private actors, navigators offer an important bridge between two kinds of social capital: the informal types of trust and legitimacy that families rely on, and the skills, knowledge, and networks necessary to access higher-quality schools in choice policy contexts. Data for this study are derived from an exploratory case study, including 13 in-depth interviews, documentary and social media analysis, and informal conversations. The findings illustrate the benefits and shortcomings of NGO information support in choice policy …

Not Woman Enough: How World Athletics’ Treatment Of Women With Differences In Sexual Development Violates The Olympic Charter And The Un’S Conventions Against Racial Discrimination And Discrimination Against Women, Rachel Crass Jan 2024

Not Woman Enough: How World Athletics’ Treatment Of Women With Differences In Sexual Development Violates The Olympic Charter And The Un’S Conventions Against Racial Discrimination And Discrimination Against Women, Rachel Crass

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

In 1966, in response to growing fears that men would attempt to pose as women to win medals in elite competition, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) began gender testing all female athletes through various visual and gynecological evaluations. These tests were quickly deemed to be too invasive and were replaced by other chemical and genetic tests as scientific capabilities advanced. The new tests led to the disqualification of dozens of elite female athletes after results revealed latent Y chromosomes in women with androgen insensitivity conditions. After multiple leading medical societies and international sports governing bodies called for an end to …

Examining Information Systems Use To Facilitate The Workplace Accommodation Process, Shiya Cao

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The workplace accommodation process is often affected by ineffective and inefficient communications and information exchanges among disabled employees and other stakeholders. Information systems (IS) can play a key role in facilitating a more effective and efficient accommodation process since IS has been shown to facilitate business processes and effect positive organizational changes.

OBJECTIVE: Since there is little to no research that exists on IS use to facilitate the workplace accommodation process, this paper, as a critical first step, examines how IS have been used in the accommodation process.

METHODS: Thirty-six interviews were conducted with disabled employees from various organizations. …

Land trusts in the U.S. play an important role in preventing the loss of farmland to development. Farmers seeking affordable land may benefit from these conservation efforts. Yet the distribution of these benefits across farmer groups is unclear. This study asks: To what extent are land trusts meeting the needs of farmers and gardeners from marginalized backgrounds? Interviews with land trust staff and focus groups with marginalized farmers and gardeners in New England, USA reveal discrepancies in how diversity and land access are discussed. Access to adequate, affordable land was a serious concern among farmers and gardeners, yet few land …

Improving Black Maternal Outcomes In Christian County, Ky: A Social Marketing Approach To Perinatal Provider Change, Ariel A. Arthur Jan 2024

Improving Black Maternal Outcomes In Christian County, Ky: A Social Marketing Approach To Perinatal Provider Change, Ariel A. Arthur

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Compared to other states in the country, Kentucky has historically poor population health outcomes. While the statewide maternal mortality rate is 16.1 per 100,000 live births, this statistic belies the stark racial disparities that exist. In 2018, the pregnancy-related death rate for Black women was 40.2 per 100,000 live births compared to 13.1 for White women. This pattern is persistent even after controlling for socioeconomic status, prenatal care, and other protective factors. Research shows that institutional and interpersonal racism when receiving obstetric care contributes to poor childbirth and postpartum outcomes for Black women. Additionally, geography and rural status may compound …

Good Deeds Gone Wrong: How Leader Self-Sacrifice Morally Licenses Followers Counterproductive Work Behaviors, Christopher Matthew Chow Jan 2024

Good Deeds Gone Wrong: How Leader Self-Sacrifice Morally Licenses Followers Counterproductive Work Behaviors, Christopher Matthew Chow

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Leader self-sacrifice (LSS) plays a key role for many companies today. It involves the leader temporarily forgoing their own interests and privileges for the sake of the collective. By modeling self-sacrificial behavior, leaders hope to create a trickle-down effect, encouraging similar behavior within their workforce. While LSS is typically perceived as a positive behavior that inspires ethical conduct and teamwork, not all employees may respond positively. According to social identity theory, group members might take on the attributes of their close others’ behaviors, as if they had done the behavior themselves. Furthermore, based on moral licensing theory, good behavior may …

Answering The “Now What?”: The Development Of A Transdisciplinary Breast Cancer Survivorship Nonprofit Organization, Vir-Iaesta Maniquiz Vergel De Dios

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Although patients are living longer or are surviving breast cancer, the side effects of treatment still leave patients struggling with quality-of-life issues. The lack of whole-person care leaves patients unequipped after treatment is complete, searching for answers and a way to survive on their own. The unintended consequence becomes a dramatic shift from the weekly/daily medical appointments during active treatment to a silence that can be daunting for many to navigate. Living Your Truth Empowered, shortened to LYTE Foundation, is an antiauthoritarian minded and anti-hierarchal nonprofit created to address the needs of the growing breast cancer survivor population. Nudging Diversity: Merging Law And Behavioral Science To Reduce Workplace Discrimination And Increase Diversity, Leora F. Eisenstadt, Todd Haugh Jan 2024

Nudging Diversity: Merging Law And Behavioral Science To Reduce Workplace Discrimination And Increase Diversity, Leora F. Eisenstadt, Todd Haugh

Emory Law Journal

Today’s employers find themselves in a complicated bind when it comes to workplace diversity and antidiscrimination initiatives. On one side is the lasting confluence of the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements, which rightly caused many organizations to reevaluate and reinvigorate their diversity and inclusion efforts. On the other side is employment law’s increasing inability to support such efforts. As workplace discrimination has moved from overt, intentional manifestations of prejudice to unconscious bias and structural discrimination, traditional employment law solutions have become less effective. The Supreme Court’s recent affirmative action decision striking down virtually all race-based considerations in college admissions—and …

“I’M Especially Sorry To Those Impacted”: Conventional Visions Of Leadership In The 2022/2023 Tech Layoffs, Jared J. Watkins

Student Theses and Dissertations

In 2022 and 2023, over 400,000 employees in the technology sector were laid off. This study conducted a thematic analysis using coding on memos announcing layoffs sent by leaders at Meta, Google, and Microsoft in late 2022 and early 2023. This study also conducted an analysis of layoff memos sent by leaders of Google and Microsoft in 2009 for comparison. Key findings include that writing to multiple stakeholders in the 2022/2023 memos produced novel contradictions and paradoxes that may impede employee sensemaking, that 2022/2023 memos used more passive and distancing language that disconnected the leader from the layoff decision and …

Lncreasing Clinical Judgment And Critical Thinking Skills Using The Ncsbn Clinical Judgment Measurement Model In Licensed Nursing, Kathryn Roberts

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Licensed nurses are having problems with critical thinking and using clinical judgment when caring for patients (Rogers & Franklin, 2023). There has been increased emphasis on critical thinking and clinical judgment in nursing school curriculum but not in hospital/orientation curriculum (Dickison et al., 2019). This quality improvement project aims to address the gaps in critical thinking and clinical judgment skills among licensed nurses by focusing on integrating the NCSBN-CJM, and cues into the prebriefing of the Respiratory Distress/Oversedation Scenario within the project hospital orientation program. The project utilized a quasi-experimental study design to investigate the cause-and-effect relationship by integrating the …

Regulations have become increasingly complex, leading to inadequately defined methods for reviewing large clinical trial safety datasets. Inconsistent safety data review (SDR) practices can result in delayed detection of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) or safety signals.

METHODS: This quality improvement project used …

Using The 4ms Framework To Prevent Falls, Gina L. Edgeworth Jan 2024

Using The 4ms Framework To Prevent Falls, Gina L. Edgeworth

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Hospital falls are rising in inpatient facilities, requiring analysis and a plan of action to address the ongoing falls. A strategy taken among facilities is implementing a 4Ms Framework that allows the nurse to address what matters to the patient and assess their mentation, medications, and mobility upon admission. With an increase in falls on a med-surg unit, it was found that there was no straightforward process for addressing the needs and concerns of patients and no assessment of medications, mobility, or mentation for those aged 65 years and older. This knowledge gap prevents nurses from providing a structured framework …
