Introduction To The Premarket Review Of Human Food Ingredients In The United States And Concepts In The Safety Assessment Of Novel Plant-Derived Ingredients, Troy Hubbard
Oxford ICSB
Premarket regulation of ingredients added to food is a key pillar ensuring the safety of food as it allows the opportunity to address potential safety concerns prior to consumer exposure. In the United States, food and color additives are substances that are intentionally added to food and are subject to pre-market approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and require a listing in the Code of Federal Regulations, unless the intended use of the substance is generally recognized as safe (GRAS), among qualified experts. GRAS is not an inherent property of a substance, as is often misunderstood; rather, it …
Diabetic Management With Glp1-Ra Ozempic And Diabetic Education, Katrina Sivo-Souza
Diabetic Management With Glp1-Ra Ozempic And Diabetic Education, Katrina Sivo-Souza
Liberty University Research Week
Diabetes mellitus remains the seventh leading cause of death within the country. This diagnosis can and often does lead to severe complications, creating implications for not only the patient but also families, caregivers, and the community. Most diabetic patients possess a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The healthcare industry continues to implement improvement with diabetic management and complications resulting from diabetes. Research suggests that the standard of care for patients with diabetes begins with lifestyle modification to improve glycemic control. New medications, such as Ozempic (semaglutide), have also been influential in diabetic management. Therefore, this scholarly project intended to …

Community Health Assessments In Guatemala And Honduras, Grace Sibert
Liberty University Research Week
Community Health Assessments (CHAs) give health professionals necessary information to identify and provide care for community needs. The services provided by CHA’s are integral, especially in underdeveloped and rural communities. This research paper serves to discuss the outcomes and benefits of community health screenings performed in Hierba Buena, Chiquimula, a rural, mountainous community in Guatemala and three, underserved communities in Copan Ruinas, Honduras. The screenings were conducted by a team of faculty and graduate and undergraduate students from Liberty University, public health professionals, Iglesia Vida, a church in south Florida and Iglesia de las Americas. The team worked alongside a …

A General Mortality Analysis In 19th And Early 20th Century Rochester, New York: “Exploring Sex-Based Differences In Childhood And Adolescence Mortality Rates Across Age Groups”, Chizoba Okorie
Proceedings of GREAT Day
This paper represents the initial phase of a research study that explores health and disease in 19th- and early 20th-century Rochester. The research focuses on the prevalence of historic diseases through the transcription and analysis of cemetery records for Mount Hope Cemetery. The purpose of this study is to compare mortality rates in childhood and adolescence across different age groups of males and females. The study investigates the average ages at death, as well as potential factors that may have contributed to mortality rates in these age groups. The study also seeks to identify the variety of factors (social, economic, …

Protein supplementation often refers to increasing the intake of this particular macronutrient through dietary supplements in the form of powders, ready-to-drink shakes, and bars. The primary purpose of protein supplementation is to augment dietary protein intake, aiding individuals in meeting their protein requirements, especially when it may be challenging to do so through regular food (i.e. chicken, beef, fish, pork, etc.) sources alone. A large body of evidence shows that protein has an important role in exercising and sedentary individuals. A PubMed search of “protein and exercise performance” reveals thousands of publications. Despite the considerable volume of evidence, it is …

DNP Projects
Background: Athletes who play outdoor sports have multiple risk factors for the development of skin cancer. Literature highlights the need for the use of evidence-based strategies to improve the knowledge and utilization of sun protection practices in this high-risk population. Methods: Playing it Sun Safe was a multifaceted skin cancer prevention initiative implemented in a population of collegiate soccer athletes in collaboration with a university athletic department and campus health clinic. Evidence-based interventions were designed through application of the Health Belief Model (HBM) and were implemented using the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) quality improvement framework. Purpose: The two-fold aim …

Challenges And Insights In Managing A Gastropleural Fistula After Sleeve Gastrectomy, Kelsey L. Peters, Warda Alam, Hassan Nasser
2024 Henry Ford Jackson Hospital Research Symposium
Introduction: A rare complication following a sleeve gastrectomy is gastropleural fistula, which develops between the sleeve and the pleural space. This complication carries significant morbidity and mortality. This is a case report of a 73-year-old female presenting with a gastropleural fistula one year following a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band explant and conversion to a sleeve gastrectomy. She failed endoscopic management and required radical surgical intervention.
Case Description: The patient is a 73-year-old female with history of morbid obesity and a prior laparoscopic adjustable gastric band placement with weight regain. She underwent a laparoscopic band conversion to a sleeve gastrectomy in …

Effects Of Three Different Loading Models On Strength And Body Composition In Resistance Trained Persons, Orlando Rivera
Effects Of Three Different Loading Models On Strength And Body Composition In Resistance Trained Persons, Orlando Rivera
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background: Periodization of the annual training plan is a commonly utilized tool within the strength and conditioning community. Within the periodized plan, load is a key variable that is often manipulated to optimize strength development. At the present moment, a common model for load prescription involves the use of a percentage-based training (PBT) plan. However, inherent problems within a PBT loading model may reduce the accuracy of the training stimulus due to various reasons including atypical one repetition maximum (1RM) performance, strength improvements, or an acute decrease in an individual’s ability to perform. Thus, autoregulatory loading models may be a …

The cGAS-STING pathway plays a crucial role in innate immune activation against cancer and infections, and STING agonists based on cyclic dinucleotides (CDN) have garnered attention for their potential use in cancer immunotherapy and vaccines. However, the limited drug-like properties of CDN necessitate an efficient delivery system to the immune system. To address these challenges, we developed an immunostimulatory delivery system for STING agonists. Here, we have examined aqueous coordination interactions between CDN and metal ions and report that CDN mixed with Zn2+ and Mn2+ formed distinctive crystal structures. Further pharmaceutical engineering led to the development of a functional coordination …
Type 2 Diabetes Health Beliefs Of College Students, Emily Spindler
Type 2 Diabetes Health Beliefs Of College Students, Emily Spindler
Honors College Theses
College students of health-related majors are sometimes assumed to have greater health literacy. The belief can be attributed to the students taking classes discussing health problems, diseases, risk factors, medical management, nutrition, and exercise. How often the health classes discuss type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains undetermined; therefore, the amount of knowledge and beliefs health students have of T2D is unknown. The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between students' majors, health beliefs about T2D, and engagement in behavioral risk factors at a mid-size regional public university. A quantitative, non-experimental, survey design was chosen, and responses were obtained …
