Cracking A Back Is Not Rehabilitation: A Comparative Analysis Of Chiropractic Vs. Physical Therapy, Lauren M. Radack Apr 2024

Cracking A Back Is Not Rehabilitation: A Comparative Analysis Of Chiropractic Vs. Physical Therapy, Lauren M. Radack

Student Scholar Showcase

There is an increasingly common belief among the general public that chiropractic care is more successful in treating injuries than physical therapy. Research shows that chiropractic care cannot be compared to physical therapy due to their different skill sets, knowledge of treatment, and applications; therefore, one modality cannot be determined better than the other. While the two domains are incomparable, individuals continue to feel pressured to select between chiropractic care and physical Therapy. Analyzing the influence of the false claims and misinformation that surrounds rehabilitation services, the belief that physical therapy treatment is able to be replaced by chiropractic treatment …

Food Price Narratives, Tammi S. Etheridge Apr 2024

Food Price Narratives, Tammi S. Etheridge

Scholarly Articles

The use of antitrust in the context of food is problematic because it so clearly violates the Consumer Welfare Standard as prescribed by the courts. Ultimately, antitrust rhetoric promoting ad nauseam enforcement will not improve consumer welfare. Advancing consumer welfare in the food industry must mean prioritizing lower food prices over some arbitrary threshold of market competition or protecting small farms. Courts can and should begin distinguishing these goals immediately.

Will The Requirement Of Lactation Consultants In Hospitals Increase Breastfeeding Rates In The U.S.?, Suzanne Eubanks

Posters

In recent years as health in the United States is declining, so are breastfeeding rates. It seems that majority of the people aware of this issue, are specialized in the area of maternal-newborn care and/or breastfeeding. “The fact that breastfeeding rates remain low in many contexts, with substantial gaps between income groups, suggests that countries are not providing women with sufficient information and support. This is an area that requires urgent attention.” Improving breastfeeding rates could save more than 820,000 children under 5 every year, and an additional 20,000 maternal deaths from breast cancer. “Physicians are not often adequately prepared …

Inhibiting Repetitive And Restricted Behaviors In Sprague-Dawley Rats Using Propranolol: Sex Differences, Melanie M. Berry

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is diagnosed when an individual has persistent deficits in social communication and restrictive repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities. Restricted repetitive behaviors (RRBs) are typically triggered by anxiety and can cause significant detriment to an individual's life. While there is no cure for ASD, there are pharmacological treatment options for the symptoms caused by ASD. Propranolol, a beta-adrenergic antagonist, is used to treat anxiety and shows promise in reducing many of the symptoms associated with ASD. This study explores the effects of Propranolol on RRBs in a sample size of …

Data was collected through in-person and/or virtual meetings to gather consent forms, …

Primary General Music: Trauma-Informed Instruction In Title I Schools In Post-Pandemic Georgia, Sarah-Ann Higgins Apr 2024

Primary General Music: Trauma-Informed Instruction In Title I Schools In Post-Pandemic Georgia, Sarah-Ann Higgins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Despite growing evidence of the need for trauma-informed teaching practices in schools, most music educators have limited training or knowledge of trauma-informed teaching strategies. The need for trauma-informed teaching has grown due to many students and teachers having lived through the collective trauma experience of social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inherently social in nature, music classes are an ideal setting to address the unique needs of students who have experienced trauma. Children living in low socio-economic settings are especially vulnerable due to the already increased likelihood of experiencing adverse events that may cause trauma such as child abuse, …

Improving Health And Wellness In Patients With Frailty Traits, Jessica Lyndsay Moore, Cassandra Nelson Apr 2024

Improving Health And Wellness In Patients With Frailty Traits, Jessica Lyndsay Moore, Cassandra Nelson

Spring 2024 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Frailty is an age-related syndrome characterized by impairments in strength, endurance, mobility, and cognitive function (Panayi et al., 2019). Studies show that frailty increases vulnerability during stressful events such as hospitalization and is linked to poor recovery (Peeler et al., 2022). In addition to poor recovery, frail patients are at risk for increased dependence, reduced occupational performance, and reduced occupational engagement (Kawaguchi et al., 2017). Purpose: This capstone project aimed to improve health and wellness in individuals with frailty traits by implementing a comprehensive program focused on improving strength, functional capacity, nutrition intake, stress management, cognitive health, and social wellness.

Basic Needs Fulfillment And Course Completion Rates For Online University Students With Disabilities: A Quantitative, Non-Experimental, Causal-Comparative Study, Ashleigh M. King

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental causal-comparative study is to determine if there is a difference in the percentage of courses completed between online university students with disabilities who are experiencing food and/or housing insecurity and those who are not. Students with disabilities at universities are less likely to complete courses than peers without disabilities, and while this discrepancy is often blamed on disability, other factors that impact student performance must be examined to determine if intersecting factors that disproportionately impact people with disabilities, specifically food and housing insecurity, may be contributing to decreased percentages of course completion. The theory …

Generational Poverty And Education: Breaking The Cycle Of Ignorance, Leland Jackson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Generational poverty is a problem that is not limited by race, gender, geography, or any other demographic. It is widespread and found in every state and city in the United States. Currently, over 17% of the population of the United States lives in poverty, based on a 2019 study. Of those, the vast majority are at least second-generation poverty dwellers. There seems to be no shortage of opinions on why a person lives below the poverty line, and many are willing to share them with those they know and those living in poverty. It is not unusual for one living …

Endocannabinoids And Their Role In Renal Health Of African Americans, William L. Doss Iii, Md, Mba, Abpmr Apr 2024

Endocannabinoids And Their Role In Renal Health Of African Americans, William L. Doss Iii, Md, Mba, Abpmr

JCHP Collaborative Capstone and Research Exchange

Abstract

The current biomarkers used for detecting renal disease Creatinine has long been seen to be inadequate in identifying the extent of renal disease in African and African American populations. CB1 and CB2 receptors are ubiquitous in the human body and their expression is increased with inflammation in the body. In response to the increased expression, the hypothalamus produces endocannabinoids in response. As a result, endocannabinoids can be a biomarker in detecting renal disease where inflammation is a significant factor in renal injury.

Assessing Natural And Synthetic Red Food Dye, Victoria Maclean

Liberty University Research Week

Colorants have been a part of our world for a long time. They have been used in textiles, medicines, hair products, cosmetic products, and specifically food. Food coloring is an important sensory cue to how we expect foods and drinks to taste. There are synthetic and natural dyes that help us gain the bright color we associate with our food. Natural dyes are made from vegetables, fruits, plants, and sometimes insects. Synthetic dyes are made from the synthesis of chemicals compounds. Customers and vendors look for a dye that is vibrant, heat and light stable, low cost, provides health benefits, …

Colorings and dyes are used to enhance the physical appearance of these items to make it more enjoyable for the human consumer. Vegetables and plants have been known to naturally dye clothing and food since the beginning. These natural dyes also had the ability to provide numerous health benefits that positively impact the human body system. Despite this, society has moved to synthetic dyes for lower cost, more supply and demand, and stronger pigmentation. Synthetic dyes tend to be brighter and more enjoyable to the eyes. Unfortunately, synthetic food dyes negatively impact human health in the process. This proposal will …
