Please Understand My Disability: An Analysis Of Youtubers’ Discourse On Disability Challenges, Shuo Niu

Computer Science

Video-sharing platforms offer a unique avenue for people with disabilities (PWDs) to highlight their experiences, including the challenges and accessibility barriers they face. While creators with disabilities effectively use these platforms to share their life struggles and advocate for societal changes, the scope of research exploring the nature of the discourse activities related to disability challenges remains limited. Our study addresses this gap by conducting a comprehensive qualitative content analysis of 468 videos posted by YouTubers with a range of disabilities, including vision, speech, mobility, hearing, and cognitive and neural impairments. Our findings reveal a predominant discussion on stigma and …

Pigs And The City, Sayd Randle

Asian Management Insights

Urban greening requires a re-look at sharing space with animals and nature.

1. There are several challenges when balancing urban development with ecological sustainability, as seen in Singapore’s struggles with human-wildlife interactions like wild boars entering populated areas.

2. Opinions on managing wildlife diverge between calls for stricter population control and concerns over habitat loss. This shows the need for balanced approaches that cater to both humans and ecology alike.

3. Cities like Houston, Barcelona, and Hong Kong offer different models for human-wildlife management, showing that local contexts shape approaches to achieving peaceful coexistence with urban wildlife.

Open Access archive

The Critically Endangered white-bellied heron Ardea insignis is a large-bodied, range-restricted, piscivorous bird of the Himalayan mountains. With fewer than 60 individuals remaining globally, regular monitoring is required for this rare species. We present the results of surveys during 2017 and 2023-2024 in Namdapha Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh, India. The encounter rate of white-bellied herons in 2017 was 0.55 individuals per km of river, but we did not detect the bird during intensive surveys in the same location during 2023-2024. The surveyed area within the Reserve was once a stronghold for the species, but its population appears to be declining. …

Why The United States Should Change Its Standards For Food Additives, Sara Smith

Touro Law Review

Processed food products sold in the United States are vastly different than those in Europe, often containing unnecessary and potentially dangerous additives. Recently, food consumer advocacy groups and reporters are bringing attention to these differences, thereby raising awareness of the poor processed food quality in the United States. The United States should take a new and improved method to food safety that mirrors the European Union’s approach. This Note will compare the differences between food additives in the United States and Europe, and further, will propose solutions to increase regulation on food additives in the United States.

A Republic Of Spending, Jonathan S. Gould Nov 2024

A Republic Of Spending, Jonathan S. Gould

Michigan Law Review

Large-scale spending measures make up many of Congress’s most important recent contributions to national policymaking. Congress has appropriated trillions of dollars to respond to emergencies, fight climate change, expand social safety net programs, spur technological innovation, and strengthen national infrastructure. While the contemporary Congress’s failure to enact landmark regulatory statutes causes many to characterize it as dysfunctional, Congress in fact remains quite active—its policymaking energy is simply concentrated in the spending domain.

Congress’s use of spending rather than regulatory legislation as its primary way of shaping national policy marks a significant shift in American governance. This Article examines the causes …

What Drives Gut Microbial Diversity And Community Structure Among Closely-Related Host Species?, Rylee Jensen Nov 2024

What Drives Gut Microbial Diversity And Community Structure Among Closely-Related Host Species?, Rylee Jensen

All NMU Master's Theses

The gut microbiome (GMB) of mammals hosts an important community of microbes that perform countless micro-ecosystem services for the host and are influenced by numerous factors including host physiology, environment, and phylogeny. Phylogeny may have a unique effect on GMB diversity and community structure (i.e., a GMB profile) via phylosymbiosis, a theory in which the evolution of hosts matches the evolution of their associated microbiota. Elucidating phylosymbiosis in mammals is difficult because multiple intrinsic and extrinsic factors collectively drive individual GMB variation. Thus, there is a need to simultaneously analyze the role of physiology, environment, and phylogeny on shaping host …

Impact Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea On Masticatory Muscle Function, Diana Russo, Luis Eduardo Almeida, Vincenzo Ronsivalle, Marco Cicciù, Gabriele Cervino, Maria Maddalena Marrapodi, Giuseppe Minervini

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common and potentially serious sleep disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of complete or partial upper airway obstruction during sleep. These obstructions result in a reduction or cessation of airflow, leading to oxygen desaturation, and disruptions in sleep patterns.1,2 Common symptoms of OSA include loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, and irritability. Obstructive sleep apnea is often associated with other medical conditions, such as obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Diagnosis typically involves polysomnography to assess the frequency and severity of apneic episodes.

Characterization Of The Ubiquitin‐Modified Proteome Of Recombinant Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells In Response To Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress, Karuppuchamy Selvaprakash, Christiana‐Kondylo Sideri, Michael Henry, Esen Efeoglu, David Ryan, Paula Meleady

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells remain the most widely used host cell line for biotherapeutics production. Despite their widespread use, understanding endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress conditions in recombinant protein production remains limited, often creating bottlenecks preventing improved production titers and product quality. Ubiquitination not only targets substrates (e.g., misfolded proteins) for proteasome degradation but also has important regulatory control functions including cell cycle regulation, translation, apoptosis, autophagy, etc. and hence is likely to be central to understanding and controlling the productivity of recombinant biotherapeutics. This study aimed to uncover differentially expressed ubiquitinated proteins following artificial induction of ER-stress in recombinant …
