While Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLPs) have improved the health and well-being of the people they serve, most healthcare institutions will only invest in an MLP if they are convinced that doing so will improve its balance sheet. This article offers a detailed estimation of the cost savings that an MLP targeted toward the most acute legal needs would accrue to an academic medical center (AMC) in North Carolina.

This Comment proposes to apply social justice-oriented safeguards to vulnerable communities in the climate migration context, focusing on recommendations to diminish the vulnerability of communities in two climate migration case studies in the United States. Part I describes the troubling realities of climate gentrification in Florida as well as forced displacement from coastal areas for native communities in Alaska. Part II addresses the existing federal and state legal frameworks in these contexts, and how gaps in each framework exacerbate the vulnerability of these overburdened communities. Part III proposes law reforms to address these concerns. It first recommends adjustments to the …

Enhancing Protection Of “Climate Refugees” In Destination Hubs: A Comparative Analysis Of Legal Mechanisms And Governance Challenges In The United States And India, Randall S. Abate, Chhaya Bhardwaj
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
The plight of climate refugees is a global crisis that requires global cooperation and regional responses. The United States and India are important regional destination countries for climate refugees. “Climate refugees” are not recognized as a category of people entitled to protection in either country; however, legal mechanisms in both countries can be applied to cross-border displacement due to climate change. Part I of the article introduces the challenge of defining the term “climate refugees.” Part II addresses legal mechanisms in India that can be used to protect people displaced across the border as refugees or protected persons, and Part …

“He totally denies it . . . he says it didn’t happen.” With that, former President Donald Trump dismissed all allegations against then-Senate candidate Judge Roy Moore for sexual misconduct with minors. While in office and since then, Trump has repeatedly displayed the power of denial in the face of allegations of wrongdoing toward women. Trump is largely right that denial works. He is not alone in considering an accused’s denial as the end of the story, even in the face of strong contradictory evidence. In doing so, Trump merely echoes a dominant attitude in the United States. Our culture …
Testimony Of Jessica Tillipman Associate Dean For Government Procurement Law Studies, The George Washington University Law School, Before The Senate Committee On Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Safeguarding The Homeland: Examining Conflicts Of Interest In Federal Contracting To Protect America’S Future, Jessica Tillipman
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This testimony, presented before the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, examines longstanding deficiencies in the regulatory framework governing organizational conflicts of interest (OCIs) in federal contracting. While acknowledging recent legislative progress, including the enactment of the Preventing Organizational Conflicts of Interest in Federal Acquisition Act, the testimony highlights how current Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) provisions are outdated, inconsistently applied, and ill-suited to modern procurement practices—particularly in advisory and consulting services with national security implications. The testimony argues for a balanced and modernized approach to OCI reform that enhances clarity, strengthens compliance and disclosure obligations, and provides …
Predicting Viral Rumors And Vulnerable Users With Graph-Based Neural Multi-Task Learning For Infodemic Surveillance, Xuan Zhang, Wei Gao
Predicting Viral Rumors And Vulnerable Users With Graph-Based Neural Multi-Task Learning For Infodemic Surveillance, Xuan Zhang, Wei Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the age of the infodemic, it is crucial to have tools for effectively monitoring the spread of rampant rumors that can quickly go viral, as well as identifying vulnerable users who may be more susceptible to spreading such misinformation. This proactive approach allows for timely preventive measures to be taken, mitigating the negative impact of false information on society. We propose a novel approach to predict viral rumors and vulnerable users using a unified graph neural network model. We pre-train network-based user embeddings and leverage a cross-attention mechanism between users and posts, together with a community-enhanced vulnerability propagation (CVP) …

Characterization Of Tonneau1 Recruiting Motif Proteins And Ton2 Signaling Functions, Tyler Falk
Characterization Of Tonneau1 Recruiting Motif Proteins And Ton2 Signaling Functions, Tyler Falk
Theses and Dissertations
Plants cells are fixed in place. As a result they have to carefully divide in order to function properly. Plants use a number of complex microtubule arrays to ensure proper division and orientation including the preprophase band (PPB) and the phragmoplast. The PPB orients the cell prior to division and marks the cortical division site, which is where the phragmoplast is guided to. The phragmoplast is a dynamic microtubule array that builds the cell plate which later becomes the cell wall that divides daughter cells. Proteins involved with PPB formation include Tonneau1 (TON1) and Tonneau2 (TON2) which localize to and …

Many designers came and left their legacies to inspire future generations, yet their journeys have often been overlooked in academic research. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of education and training through core facets of lifelong learning —formal, non-formal, and informal education —over the past century on achieving career success in the fashion industry. A mixed-method content analysis, utilizing triangulation, was conducted to understand the educational and training experiences of prominent designers. Two research questions guided the analysis: RQ1 …
Food For Thought: Fabricating The Cannibal In Colonization, Hannah Dubrovich
Food For Thought: Fabricating The Cannibal In Colonization, Hannah Dubrovich
Theses and Dissertations
Anthropophagy means people-eating, as does cannibal, but the terms are not synonymous. After Europeans landed in the Americas, Christopher Columbus coined the word cannibal. Despite the two terms having similar base definitions, there are additional connotations associated with cannibal. The way in which cannibalism has been thought about by Western cultures is not about the act of people-eating, but the constructed character of the cannibal as a “savage” Other created through colonization. In addition to the term's associated meaning being cemented during this time, colonizers used the term as a tool to Other Native peoples and aid in colonization. It …

(Re)Producing Orientalism: Industry Logic Of Chinese Mobile Game Re-Skins In The Global App Empire, Yizhou Xu
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Through the case study of the mobile title Game of Sultans, this article examines the proliferation of iterative and copycat games through the practice of reskins in the mobile game industry. Based on year-long autoethnographic fieldwork working in a Chinese mobile game company, I provide an on-the-ground perspective of how Orientalist representations in reskinned games are instrumentalized through the roles of “cultural brokers” and the work of localization for Western markets. By taking a theoretical and technological understanding of reskins, I argue that reskinned games, as a form of industrial mimicry, while an important aspect of standardized game production, …

Reverse-Engineering Of Disinformation Campaigns During The War In Ukraine, Lora Pitman, Ava Baratz, Kelly Morgan, Marcy Alvarado
School of Cybersecurity Faculty Publications
Information operations have long been a part of warfare. Disinformation campaigns, in particular, are usually launched by states in order to mislead and confuse populations in adversarial countries, but also to obtain support for their actions from domestic audiences. These campaigns threaten human security, at the individual level, but also state- and even international security. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia came with a new wave of disinformation not only in Ukraine itself, but also in countries from various other continents. This paper studies the characteristics of the spread of disinformation from the first day of the war in February …
Towards A Context-Contingent Stage Theory Of Entrepreneurial Opportunity: Introducing The Petii Model, Xiaohong Iris Quan
Towards A Context-Contingent Stage Theory Of Entrepreneurial Opportunity: Introducing The Petii Model, Xiaohong Iris Quan
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Understanding opportunity is a crucial aspect of entrepreneurship research. Existing studies have extensively examined individual factors in facilitating entrepreneurial activities such as new venture creation. Although there are some discussions on contextual factors, few connect context with the origin of entrepreneurship—opportunity. Recognising the objectivity of entrepreneurial opportunity, this theoretical article first proposes two types of opportunities—innovative opportunity and imitative opportunity—to understand the nature of opportunity. It then proposes a systematic framework—the PETII (Population, Economic status, Technological advancement, Industry life cycle, Institutions) model—to analyse the role of context in the distribution of opportunity. Furthermore, it examines how both objective contextual factors …
An Exploratory Study Of Research Contexts For Information Literacy Instruction, Allison Hosier
An Exploratory Study Of Research Contexts For Information Literacy Instruction, Allison Hosier
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
In a previous study, the author argued that information literacy instruction which takes into account the contextual nature of research is more meaningful to students and has more potential for long term impact than instruction that focuses narrowly on academic research skills. As part of that argument, the author identified six types of research that represented the contextual nature of research—academic, creative, personal, professional, scholarly, and scientific. This list of research types has since proven useful in the classroom. However, it is still an open question whether this framework is a useful way of thinking about research. The author set …
