Eeg Eye Blink Artifacts Removal With Wavelet Denoising And Bandpass Filtering, Ebtesam N. Alshemmary, Bushra K. Hilal, Azmi Sh. Abdulbaqi, Mohammed A. Ahmed, Zhentai Lu

Baghdad Science Journal

Many data sources can be analyzed using Wavelet Transforms (WT), a mathematical technique frequently used for extracting information from them. Although WT was effective at Blind Source Separation (BSS), it had some limitations, such as signal loss. The problem has been addressed with the introduction of a joint algorithm that combines WT with Frequency Domain Filtering (BPF). Wavelet Denoising Technique (WDT) and Band-Pass Filtering (BPF) are employed in this research to propose an innovative algorithm for combining advanced wavelet transform methods. Combining these two techniques helps reduce eye flutter in electroencephalograms (EEGs).FP1 signals produced by eye movement are filtered out …

Estimation Of Copula Density Using The Wavelet Transform, Fatimah Hashim Falhi, Munaf Yousif Hmood Nov 2024

Estimation Of Copula Density Using The Wavelet Transform, Fatimah Hashim Falhi, Munaf Yousif Hmood

Baghdad Science Journal

This paper proposes a new method to estimate the copula density function using wavelet decomposition as a nonparametric method, to obtain more accurate results and address the issue of boundary effects that nonparametric estimation methods suffer from. The wavelet method is an automatic method for dealing with boundary effects because it does not take into Consideration whether the time series is stationary or nonstationary. To estimate the copula density function, simulation was used to generate data using five different copula functions, such as Gaussian, Frank, Tawn, Rotation Tawn, and Joe copulas. With five different sample sizes at three positive correlation …

Experiencing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may impact personal opinions, attitudes, and judgments, which can further result in HIV-related stigma. HIV-related stigma consequentially may impact HIV preventive measures such as HIV testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis uptake, and condom use. The extent to which ACEs influence HIV-related stigma perception has not been well studied. Therefore, the study aimed to examine the association between ACEs and perceived and interpersonal HIV-related stigma among Tanzanian HIV-negative men. Quantitative survey data were obtained from the Tanzania STEP (Self-Testing Education and Promotion) project established in four wards: Mabibo, Manzese, Tandale, and Mwanyanamala. A total of 507 men responded …

Charting The Unknown: First Passage Time Probabilities For Pearson Diffusion Process And Application To Options Risk Management, Saswat Patra, Malay Bhattacharyya

American Business Review

The first passage time probabilities have applications in many fields, including Finance, Marketing, Economics, Physics, and Statistics. In this paper, we study the first passage time probabilities for a Pearson diffusion process and obtain the lower and upper bounds of the first passage time density. We show that the density may be approximated by the upper bound with an error of approximately five percent. We present an application by modelling the profit and loss function of the S&P 500, FTSE 100 and DAX 40 index options using a Pearson diffusion process. Further, we establish the relation between first passage time …

The Epistemic Role Of Ai Decision Support Systems: Neither Superiors, Nor Inferiors, Nor Peers, Rand Hirmiz Nov 2024

The Epistemic Role Of Ai Decision Support Systems: Neither Superiors, Nor Inferiors, Nor Peers, Rand Hirmiz

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Despite the importance of discussions over the epistemic role that artificially intelligent decision support systems ought to play, there is currently a lack of these discussions in both the AI literature and the epistemology literature. My goal in this paper is to rectify this by proposing an account of the epistemic role of AI decision support systems in medicine and discussing what this epistemic role means with regard to how these systems ought to be utilized. In particular, I argue that AI decision support systems are not epistemic superiors, inferiors, or peers. Instead, I recommend that they be classified in …

Against The Substitutive Approach To Ai In Healthcare, Rand Hirmiz Nov 2024

Against The Substitutive Approach To Ai In Healthcare, Rand Hirmiz

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Paul Bloom has famously argued against the need for empathy in clinicians, while Sally Dalton-Brown has argued that AI need not be capable of empathy to be a good carer. In this paper, the capacity for AI to substitute for human clinicians is assessed from a bioethical perspective, primarily through the evaluation of the arguments put forth by Dalton-Brown and Bloom concerning empathy in healthcare. In opposition to both Bloom and Dalton-Brown, this paper argues that (1) empathy is essential to providing good care or deep care (that is, care that goes beyond the mere fulfilment of medical tasks), (2) …

A Neutrosophic Model For Measuring Evolution, Involution, And Indeterminacy In Species: Integrating Common And Uncommon Traits In Environmental Adaptation, Antonios Paraskevas, Michael Madas

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

In 2017, Professor F. Smarandache introduced the Neutrosophic Theory of Evolution, Involution, and Indeterminacy (or Neutrality) (NToEIaI). He concluded that every theory of evolution is characterized by a certain degree of truth, indeterminacy, and untruth, as in neutrosophic logic. In this perspective, he raised several open questions on evolution, neutrality, and involution that required further research effort. Very recently, in 2024, Smarandache conducted research, from a soft sciences/philosophical viewpoint, on identifying and studying common parts in uncommon things and uncommon parts in common things emphasizing the complexity and interconnectedness of concepts within the context of neutrosophy. In this article, we …

Learning Problems Related To Stochastic Differential Equations, Jinpu Zhou Nov 2024

Learning Problems Related To Stochastic Differential Equations, Jinpu Zhou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) are essential for modeling systems influenced by both deterministic dynamics and random fluctuations, with applications in a wide variety of disciplines. This thesis develops a Bayesian framework for nonparametric learning in SDEs, addressing key challenges in inference, particularly when dealing with complex systems and incomplete data. The thesis begins by establishing a theoretical foundation in optimization over Hilbert spaces, including a generalized representer theorem to address infinite-dimensional optimization problems encountered in nonparametric inference. Building on this, we introduce a Bayesian framework with shrinkage priors to learn drift functions from high-frequency data. Bayesian approach incorporates low-cost sparse …

Analysis Of Multivariable Sensor Responses To Multi-Analyte Gas Samples In The Presence Of Interferents And Humidity, Sakin Sarwar Satter, Florian Bender, Nicholas Post, Antonio J. Ricco, Fabien Josse

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This work presents an adaptive sensor signal-processing approach to enable quantification, using a single gas sensor or a small sensor array, of multianalyte mixtures of aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of various interferents and humidity for environmental-monitoring applications. Dynamic sensor responses are analyzed by extracting multivariable sensing parameters to provide necessary sensitivity and selectivity. This is achieved by integrating the Levenberg–Marquardt-modified, exponentially weighted, recursive-least-squares-estimation (LM-modified EW-RLSE) algorithm and principal-component analysis (PCA). Achieving measured detection limits as low as 3 μg/L (≤1 ppm by volume) for 6 target analytes, the system exhibits excellent PCA cluster separation for all analytes in the …

Search For An Ev-Scale Sterile Neutrino Using Improved High-Energy 𝜈𝜇 Event Reconstruction In Icecube, Karen Andeen

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

This Letter presents the result of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using 10.7 yr of IceCube data. We analyze atmospheric muon neutrinos that traverse the Earth with energies ranging from 0.5 to 100 TeV, incorporating significant improvements in modeling neutrino flux and detector response compared to earlier studies. Notably, for the first time, we categorize data into starting and throughgoing events, distinguishing neutrino interactions with vertices inside or outside the instrumented volume, to improve energy resolution. The best-fit point for a 3+1 model is found to be at sin2⁡(2⁢𝜃24)=0.16 and Δ⁢𝑚241 =3.5  eV2, which agrees with previous iterations of this …

Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) prevalence and severity are associated with increased age, female sex, and apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) genotype. Although estrogen therapy (ET) effectively reduces symptoms of menopause including hot flashes and anxiety, and can reduce dementia risk, it is associated with increased risks of breast and uterine cancer due to estrogen receptor alpha (ERα)-mediated increases in cancer cell proliferation. Because ERβ activation reduces this cell proliferation, selective targeting of ERβ may provide a safer method of improving memory and reducing hot flashes in menopausal women, including those with AD. APOE genotype influences the response to ET, although it is …

The Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) project is the largest study of adolescent brain development. ABCD longitudinally tracks 11,868 participants aged 9-10 years from 21 sites using standardized protocols for multi-site MRI data collection and analysis. While the multi-site and multi-scanner study design enhances the robustness and generalizability of analysis results, it may also introduce nonbiological variances including scanner-related variations, subject motion, and deviations from protocols. ABCD imaging data were collected biennially within a period of ongoing maturation in cortical thickness and integrity of cerebral white matter. These changes can bias the classical test-retest methodologies, such as intraclass correlation …

On Spatiotemporal Trends In Meter-Scale Gris Surface Roughness And The Development Of An On-Ice Laser Distance Meter, Jamie C. Good Nov 2024

On Spatiotemporal Trends In Meter-Scale Gris Surface Roughness And The Development Of An On-Ice Laser Distance Meter, Jamie C. Good

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Surface roughness is a critical component of the energy and mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). However, roughness is often oversimplified in predictive models due to its inherent scale dependency. Accurate quantification of roughness, including its recent changes and driving factors, is critically important for understanding and predicting GrIS surface dynamics. Using multi- and single-scale methods of roughness analysis, I assess spatiotemporal trends in GrIS meter-scale surface roughness from 2009 to 2019 with Operation IceBridge’s Airborne Topographic Mapper ILATM2 product. Additionally, with data from on-ice automated weather stations, I employ machine learning techniques to identify primary climatic controls …

Navigating Non-Orthogonality: Exploring Latent Mean Differences In Unbalanced Conditions, Jay B. Jeffries Nov 2024

Navigating Non-Orthogonality: Exploring Latent Mean Differences In Unbalanced Conditions, Jay B. Jeffries

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Researchers understand that conducting numerous pairwise comparisons between group means increases the Type I error rate, prompting the use of planned contrasts like orthogonal contrast sets. Implicit to orthogonal contrast sets is the principal assumption that groups are balanced in size. Further, when dealing with complex variables like latent constructs, specialized modeling is necessary. Understanding how violations of the assumptions of an orthogonal contrast set and the latent variable model approach can help identify variation in the accuracy of group mean difference. However, hindrances to the accuracy of latent mean orthogonal comparisons when this assumption is untenable remains unsettled. This …

Environmental transitions, such as the salinity divide separating marine and fresh waters, shape biodiversity over both shallow and deep timescales, opening up new niches and creating opportunities for accelerated speciation and adaptive radiation. Understanding the genetics of environmental adaptation is central to understanding how organisms colonise and subsequently diversify in new habitats. We used time-resolved transcriptomics to contrast the hyposalinity stress responses of two diatoms. Skeletonema marinoi has deep marine ancestry but has recently invaded brackish waters. Cyclotella cryptica has deep freshwater ancestry and can withstand a much broader salinity range. Skeletonema marinoi is less adept at mitigating even mild …
