Efficient Synthesis Of Thiazole-Fused Bisnoralcohol Derivatives As Potential Therapeutic Agents, Subrata Roy, Hansa Raj Kc, Sanjay Adhikary, Alexander N. Erickson, Mohammad Abrar Alam

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Thiazole derivatives are known for a wide range of therapeutic properties. Bisnoralcohol is an inexpensive natural product obtained by the biodegradation of sterols. This article describes an efficient synthesis of a library of thiazole-fused bisnoralcohol derivatives. These novel compounds have been studied for their antineoplastic and antibacterial properties, which led to the discovery of hit compounds with therapeutic potential. The antibacterial compound is noncytotoxic and nonhemolytic against cancer cell lines and sheep red blood cells, respectively. Several of the antineoplastic compounds showed activity against human cancer cell lines with growth inhibition at submicromolar concentration.

Aberrant DNA repair is a hallmark of cancer, and many tumors display reduced DNA repair capacities that sensitize them to genotoxins. Here, we demonstrate that the differential DNA repair capacities of healthy and transformed tissue may be exploited to obtain highly selective chemotherapies. We show that the novel N3-(2-fluoroethyl)imidazotetrazine “KL-50” is a selective toxin toward tumors that lack the DNA repair protein O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase (MGMT), which reverses the formation of O6-alkylguanine lesions. We establish that KL-50 generates DNA interstrand cross-links (ICLs) by a multistep process comprising DNA alkylation to generate an O6-(2-fluoroethyl)guanine (O6FEtG) …

Objective

This study evaluated the causal relationships among situation awareness (SA), cohesion, and autonomic synchrony (SE) within teams. SA is often a team effort and should be more accurate in better-functioning teams.

Background

Cohesive teams perform better overall, although the relationship appears reciprocal; the relationship to SA has not been considered previously. SEis a collective neurocognitive activity that has been connected to team coordination, communication, and performance in some circumstances.

Method

In this experiment, 71 undergraduates, organized into 16 teams, played two matches of a first-person shooter computer game and completed self-report measures of cohesion …

The Effects Of School Autonomy On Student Achievement, Frank P. Kastl Jan 2024

The Effects Of School Autonomy On Student Achievement, Frank P. Kastl

Honors College Theses

This paper presents new evidence on the effects of school autonomy over personnel, budgeting, and curriculum on student achievement. I use the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) data, a survey and assessment of students and schools in over 80 countries along with panel data methods. The empirical findings suggest that a greater degree of autonomy over schooling decisions improves achievement in math, science, and reading. However, these improvements are most pronounced in more developed countries.

Aerothermodynamic Analysis Of A Linear Aerospike Fueled With Liquid Methane Using Cfd, Aidan Rowell Jan 2024

Aerothermodynamic Analysis Of A Linear Aerospike Fueled With Liquid Methane Using Cfd, Aidan Rowell

Honors College Theses

Renewed interest in manned spaceflight, mostly spurred by the advancement of commercial spacecraft, has led to growing interest in improving the efficiency of rocket engines. Aerospike nozzles have the potential to provide this boost in efficiency to spacecraft and thus lower costs and increase payload capacity. This type of nozzle is what is known as altitude adjusting and can significantly increase efficiency. When paired with propellants such as methane/oxygen, which can be manufactured in-situ on some planetary bodies and has a higher density than traditional propellants like liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen, even more efficiency gain can be achieved. To understand the …

Historical and modern scientific thought is dominated by the English language, colonized science, patriarchal norms, and Westernized “ways of knowing.” By making materials that lie outside that narrative discoverable (e.g., non-Western science, Indigenous/Aboriginal knowledge, women in science, etc.) we can assert that science is a global endeavor by representing diverse scientists on physical library shelves or ebook “shelves.” The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian and Science and Outreach Librarian at Furman University, a small liberal arts college, collaborated on a project to address discriminatory practices in the catalog records of a subset of the libraries’ STEM collection. Spurred by another project …
