This paper surveyed several significant papers on specific topics applying the Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) for Sign Language Recognition (SLR), divided into five main episodes: Classical HMMs, Extended HMMs, HMMs and Machine Learning, HMMs and Sensor Fusion, and HMMs and Big Data. This stringent survey would contribute significantly to advanced research on unification brain models such as neural networks, adaptive resonance theory, and confabulation theory. First, the HMM was introduced as one of the popular methods of performing SLR, and each episode of its development was expounded. In each episode, a main paper and several supporting papers were summarized. Next, …

Tightening Qc Relaxations Of Ac Optimal Power Flow Through Improved Linear Convex Envelopes, Mohammad Rasoul Narimani, Daniel K. Molzahn, Katherine R. Davis, Mariesa L. Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

AC optimal power flow (AC OPF) is a fundamental problem in power system operations. Accurately modeling the network physics via the AC power flow equations makes AC OPF a challenging nonconvex problem. To search for global optima, recent research has developed various convex relaxations that bound the optimal objective values of AC OPF problems. The QC relaxation convexifies the AC OPF problem by enclosing the non-convex terms within convex envelopes. The QC relaxation's accuracy strongly depends on the tightness of these envelopes. This paper proposes two improvements for tightening QC relaxations of OPF problems. We first consider a particular nonlinear …

Simultaneous Frequency Regulation And Active Power Sharing In Islanded Microgrid Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Oroghene Oboreh-Snapps, Sophia A. Strathman, Jonathan Saelens, Arnold Fernandes, Lauryn Morris, Praneeth Uddarraju, Jonathan W. Kimball

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel approach that integrates deep reinforcement learning (DRL) with the conventional virtual synchronous generator (VSG) to address dual objectives of microgrid (MG) control, frequency regulation and precise active power sharing. MGs typically consist of multiple Inverter-Based-Distributed-Generators (IBDGs) connected in parallel through different line impedances. The conventional active power loop (APL) of the VSG encounters significant steady-state frequency errors as load increases/decreases during islanded operation. To mitigate this issue, secondary-level controllers like proportional-integral (PI) control are added to the APL to regulate the frequency of IBDGs. However, PI control compromises power-sharing capabilities when the impedance values of …

Towards Explainability Of Dimension Reduction Plots Of Unsupervised Learning Model Outcomes, Tony E.Astuhuaman Davila, Daniel B. Hier, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dimension reduction methods are used to visualize the output of unsupervised learning models when applied to complex data. These techniques improve interpretability by transforming a high-dimension space to a lower-dimension space (usually 2D or 3D). The results are typically viewed as 2D scatter plots, and class centroids may be added to increase interpretability. Although useful, the relationship of these class centroids to the underlying feature space remains opaque. The innovative aspect of this work is to create a strong link between the dimension-reduced space and the underlying high-dimension feature space by adding selected feature centroids to the 2D scatter plots. …

Evaluating Electromagnetic Interference Effects On Gnss Receivers, Giorgi Tsintsadze, Haran Manoharan, Arushi Sahai, Daryl G. Beetner, Brian Booth

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic interference can be highly disruptive to global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers. Interference can be intentional but can also occur from electronics modules placed within the same system, where these modules may create sufficient unintended radiated emissions to disrupt GNSS operation. In this paper, GNSS receiver performance is evaluated in the presence of multi-tone interference. An expression for the GNSS correlator output in the presence of continuous wave interference (CWI) is derived and is extended to predict the carrier to noise density ratio, C/N0, of the receiver in the presence of multi-tone interference. C/N0 is widely used for characterizing …

Virtual Inertia Scheduling (Vis) For Microgrids With Static And Dynamic Security Constraints, Buxin She, Fangxing Li, Jinning Wang, Hantao Cui, Xiaofei Wang, Rui Bo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microgrids feature a high penetration of inverter-interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs). The low inertia characteristic and fast dynamics of DERs pose challenges to conventional decoupled static economic operation and dynamic control design within microgrids. Hence, this paper proposed virtual inertia scheduling (VIS) for microgrids, aiming to ensure both economy and security. First, a unified framework for device-level control and grid-level operation is introduced, with VIS serving as a key application to address low inertia issues. VIS actively harnesses the controllability and flexibility of DERs to effectively manage microgrid inertia. It updates the conventional economic operation framework by incorporating the virtual …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In high-speed printed circuit board (PCB) modeling, the accurate determination of the dielectric constant (DK) and dissipation factor (DF) is crucial for signal integrity analysis at design stage. This paper introduces an analytical approach using a partially filled TM010-mode dielectric resonator, an effective tool for DK and DF extraction of PCB material. We begin by discussing the theoretical underpinnings of TM010-mode dielectric resonators and their applicability in measuring the DK and DF of the material under test. A mathematical model is then presented, linking the resonant characteristics directly to the DK and DF of the dielectric material. The …

Modeling Of Power Distrubition Network (Pdn) Noise Coupling Induced Clock Phase Noise, Zhekun Peng, Junyong Park, Chaofeng Li, Joey Stecher, Srinivas Venkataraman, Xu Wang, Granthana Rangaswamy, Donghyun Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Phase noise analysis is important to clock design. Noise sources of spurs shown on the phase noise result are challenging to find out due to the unknown source locations and coupling mechanisms. Noise from power distribution network (PDN) is one of the most troublesome sources. A behavioral modeling methodology is proposed to simulate the clock phase noise induced by PDN noise coupling for two different mechanisms: PDN-to-clock additive coupling and PDN-to-PDN up-conversion modulation. The thermal noise and 1/f flicker noise are simplified to provide a straightforward view of spur level. The model can be applied to both single-ended clock and …

Lifelong Direct Error-Driven Learning For Uav Altitude Estimation In Different Weather Conditions, Shirin Nasr-Esfahani, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

While deep neural networks achieve remarkable visual perception capabilities for UAV position and orientation estimation, their resilience to different weather conditions still needs improvement. These models often suffer from catastrophic forgetting when adapted to new environments, losing previously acquired knowledge. Lifelong learning methods aim to balance learning flexibility and memory stability. In this paper, we present an image-based approach to estimate the relative altitude of a UAV using 2D images under varying weather conditions, including sunny, sunset, and foggy scenarios. Our experiments demonstrate significant performance degradation when the model is trained sequentially on different weather datasets, especially when new images …

Shifting Educational Paradigms: An Analysis Of Evolving Student Expectations Within A Reformed Physical Chemistry Curriculum, Kevin E. Morales Jan 2024

Shifting Educational Paradigms: An Analysis Of Evolving Student Expectations Within A Reformed Physical Chemistry Curriculum, Kevin E. Morales

Undergraduate Scholarship and Creative Works

Students often hold negative expectations when enrolling in rigorous undergraduate courses. PhysicalChemistry is a challenging upper-level course for Chemistry majors; the course has a reputation as a demandingcourse that leads to students building negative expectations. This worsened when ambiguity existed in an instructor’s pedagogy. Not addressing those initial expectations of the students abates their motivation, which does not put them in the best place to learn, leading to poor academic performance. The course syllabus is often the first interaction a student has with the course; it can be a critical tool in (re)setting students' initial expectations and allows the instructor …

Byzantine Consensus In Abstract Mac Layer, Lewis Tseng, Callie Sardina Jan 2024

Byzantine Consensus In Abstract Mac Layer, Lewis Tseng, Callie Sardina

Computer Science

This paper studies the design of Byzantine consensus algorithms in an asynchronous single-hop network equipped with the “abstract MAC layer” [DISC09], which captures core properties of modern wireless MAC protocols. Newport [PODC14], Newport and Robinson [DISC18], and Tseng and Zhang [PODC22] study crash-tolerant consensus in the model. In our setting, a Byzantine faulty node may behave arbitrarily, but it cannot break the guarantees provided by the underlying abstract MAC layer. To our knowledge, we are the first to study Byzantine faults in this model. We harness the power of the abstract MAC layer to develop a Byzantine approximate consensus algorithm …

Fault-Tolerant Consensus In Anonymous Dynamic Network, Qinzi Zhang, Lewis Tseng Jan 2024

Fault-Tolerant Consensus In Anonymous Dynamic Network, Qinzi Zhang, Lewis Tseng

Computer Science

This paper studies the feasibility of reaching consensus in an anonymous dynamic network. In our model, n anonymous nodes proceed in synchronous rounds. We adopt a hybrid fault model in which up to f nodes may suffer crash or Byzantine faults, and the dynamic message adversary chooses a communication graph for each round. We introduce a stability property of the dynamic network - (T, D)-dynaDegree for T ≥ 1 and n - 1 ≥ D ≥1 - which requires that for every T consecutive rounds, any fault-free node must have incoming directed links from at least D distinct neighbors. These …
