Analysis Of Numerical Methods For Spdes, And Applications Of Free Boundary Problems In Financial Mathematics, Corey A. Prachniak
Analysis Of Numerical Methods For Spdes, And Applications Of Free Boundary Problems In Financial Mathematics, Corey A. Prachniak
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation studies the key properties of a fully discrete finite element method for a class of stochastic moving boundary problems. Then, free boundary problems and their applications in finance are explored.
The first part of this thesis studies the properties of a proposed fully discrete finite element method scheme with an interpolation operator for stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equations with functional-type noise. These solutions cannot be differentiated in time, so we provide Holder continuity results to aid in the scheme’s error analysis. We further derive the uniform boundedness of higher-order L2-norm moment for use in the analysis. Then nearly …

Examining Educational Inequalities And Driving Science’S Next Generation Forward: Geobus Program Theory Evaluation, Elise M. Lorenzo
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study presents a theory-driven evaluation of GeoBus, a mobile science lab designed to deliver hands-on, “fun learning experiences” via a solar powered, technology-rich learning environment brought directly to K-12 students in Central Florida Title 1 schools. While STEM education is widely recognized as essential for promoting equity, many schools, particularly in under-resourced communities, continue to face barriers to accessing meaningful and inclusive science learning opportunities. GeoBus was created in response to this need, offering students an informal learning environment with exposure to geospatial technologies and interactive science content.
Drawing on mixed-methods data, including content from the GeoBus website and …

The Dual Impact Of Moral Injury: Links To Ptsd Symptoms And Disinhibited Externalizing In U.S. Combat Veterans, Bianca S. Islas
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Moral injury is an experience of psychological distress that occurs when a person’s morals are violated by themselves or others, including institutions and organizations. Such violations of morality can be impairing and have high rates of comorbidity with internalizing disorders (posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, suicidality), which may indicate that moral injury is a transdiagnostic construct. This study had four aims, which were accomplished using from a nationally representative, probability-based sample of 1,353 US military veterans. In the first aim, we created structural models of moral injury using the Moral Injury Events Scale (for which a bifactor structure with a specific …

The gut microbiome has emerged as a key regulator of response to cancer immunotherapy. However, a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms by which the microbiome influences immunotherapy is needed to identify strategies to optimize outcomes. To this end, we developed a mathematical model to obtain insights into the effect of the microbiome on the immune system and immunotherapy response. This model was based on (i) gut microbiome data derived from preclinical studies, (ii) mathematical modeling of the antitumor immune response, (iii) association analysis of microbiome profiles with model-predicted immune profiles, and (iv) statistical models that correlate model parameters with …
The Effectiveness Of Pre-Packaged Literacy Curriculum: A Document Analysis Of The Culturally Responsive Tenets In Pre-Packaged Literacy Curriculum, Grace Ghazzawi
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The introduction of the Common Core State Standards in 2010 sought to standardize educational expectations across the U.S., aiming to promote equity by ensuring all students received a high-quality education. However, educational disparities persist, particularly for historically marginalized students, leading to a continued achievement gap in literacy, especially among low-income students of color. While pre-packaged curricula have emerged as tools to align instruction with the rigor of the Common Core State Standards, their effectiveness in addressing the diverse needs of students from marginalized backgrounds remains uncertain. This study explores the intersection of pre-packaged literacy curricula and Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) …

Multimodal Characterization Of Systems-Level Robustness In The Cellular Organelle Network, Aline Arra
Multimodal Characterization Of Systems-Level Robustness In The Cellular Organelle Network, Aline Arra
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Eukaryotic cells house mesoscopic and macroscopic complex systems that work in tandem for proper cellular function. A defining feature of eukaryotic cells is their mesoscopic network of membrane bound compartments called organelles. While each type of organelle has their own individual functions, there are vital cellular processes that come from the interactions between them, such as organelle biogenesis and metabolic regulation. A central question in cellular biophysics is to what degree is cellular function robust or fragile to breaks in the organelle network. These interactions can be explored by genetically deleting inter-organelle protein tethers called organelle contact sites. Here we …

Red Noise Suppression In Pulsar Timing Array Data Using Adaptive Splines, Yi-Qian Qian, Yan Wang, Soumya Mohanty
Red Noise Suppression In Pulsar Timing Array Data Using Adaptive Splines, Yi-Qian Qian, Yan Wang, Soumya Mohanty
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Noise in Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) data is commonly modeled as a mixture of white and red noise components. While the former is related to the receivers, and easily characterized by three parameters (EFAC, EQUAD and ECORR), the latter arises from a mix of hard to model sources and, potentially, a stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB). Since their frequency ranges overlap, GWB search methods must model the non-GWB red noise component in PTA data explicitly, typically as a set of mutually independent Gaussian stationary processes having power-law power spectral densities. However, in searches for continuous wave (CW) signals from resolvable …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Kolmogorov–Arnold Networks (KANs) have recently emerged as a powerful alternative to traditional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), offering superior accuracy and interpretability, which are two critical requirements in healthcare applications. This study investigates the effectiveness of KANs across a range of clinical tasks by applying them to diverse medical datasets, including structured clinical data and time-series physiological signals. Compared with conventional ANNs, KANs demonstrate significantly improved performance, achieving higher predictive accuracy even with smaller network architectures. Beyond performance gains, KANs offer a unique advantage: the ability to extract symbolic expressions from learned functions, enabling transparent, human-interpretable models—a key factor in clinical …
From Sim To 6dof: Deep Learning For Real-Time Satellite Pose Estimation From Resolved Ground-Based Imagery, Thomas W.N. Dickinson
From Sim To 6dof: Deep Learning For Real-Time Satellite Pose Estimation From Resolved Ground-Based Imagery, Thomas W.N. Dickinson
Theses
This dissertation presents the first practical system for automated six degrees of freedom (6DOF) satellite pose estimation from resolved ground-based adaptive optics (AO) imagery. Addressing a key challenge in Space Domain Awareness (SDA), the proposed approach eliminates the need for human labeling by directly regressing satellite orientation and position from blurry, noisy, and deeply-shadowed imagery. The architecture consists of a multi-stage deep neural network pipeline that localizes the satellite, predicts pose, and optionally smooths predictions over time. Networks are trained exclusively on fully synthetic imagery generated from a 3D CAD model. Despite this, the model generalizes effectively, bridging the Sim2Real …

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Landslides pose a significant hazard worldwide. Despite advances in landslide monitoring, predicting their size, timing, and location remains a major challenge. We revisit the 2017 Mud Creek landslide in California using radar interferometry, pixel tracking, and elevation change measurements from satellite and airborne radar, lidar, and optical data. Our analysis shows that pixel tracking of optical imagery captured the transition from slow motion to runaway acceleration starting ~ 1 month before catastrophic failure—an acceleration undetected by satellite InSAR alone. Strain rate maps revealed a new slip surface formed within the landslide body during acceleration, likely a key weakening mechanism. Failure …

Seasonality In Terminus Ablation Rates For The Glaciers In Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat), K. C. Aman, Ellyn M. Enderlin, Dominik Fahrner, Twila Moon, Dustin Carroll
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Marine-terminating glaciers of Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat) have been losing mass since the 1990s, with a substantial portion caused by the effects of dynamic change. Conventional assessments of dynamic mass loss, however, often ignore the influence of terminus advance or retreat on the timing of mass loss. Here, we construct and analyze a decade (2013-2023) of monthly ice flux driven both by temporal variability in ice flow (i.e., discharge) and terminus position change - collectively called terminus ablation - for 49 marine-terminating glaciers in Greenland. We calculate terminus ablation rates using open-source datasets, including terminus position, ice surface elevation, ice thickness, …

Exploring The Connection Between Teaching Frameworks And Policies For Assessing Teaching, Barbara J. Bird, Beate Brunow, Eric Kyle, Shawn R. Simonson
International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
Most faculty policies aimed at faculty review or assessment of teaching do not include specific teaching criteria and standards but instead lean heavily on student evaluations and peer review of teaching. This approach provides no concrete path for using assessment in a feedback loop that enables teachers to improve teaching. Implementing teaching frameworks can improve feedback loops and assessment policies by providing specific criteria and standards. Developing teaching effectiveness frameworks and connecting them to teaching assessment policies can be a critical step in advancing institutional change initiatives focused on teaching effectiveness. This critical alignment enables sustainable and meaningful change. This …

In geotechnical engineering, evaluating slope stability remains a significant challenge due to inherent soil variability and environmental uncertainty. This study explores the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in predicting the factor of safety (FoS) of slopes using dimensionless input variables. An initial dataset of 349 samples was refined to 259 validated cases after removing outliers and incomplete entries. The input parameters were transformed into nondimensional forms c / γh, (tan(⌀)) / (tan (β)), and p / γh based on fluid mechanics principles to improve generalization and reduce dimensional bias. A feedforward ANN model …

A Hybrid Deep Learning Approach For Lung Diseases Classification Using Vision Transformer And Densenet, Noor Abd Alrazak Shnain, Mohammed Abdulameer Aljanabi
NJF Intelligent Engineering Journal
Lung disorders, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and COVID-19, remain significant global health issues. Accurate and early detection is of paramount significance to ensure effective treatment and control. Conventional CNN models like DenseNet have shown superior performance in the classification of medical images, whereas Vision Transformers (ViTs) have recently gained momentum as formidable models to capture global context information. Each of these models, however, has limitations when operated standalone. This manuscript suggests an innovative hybrid deep learning framework that synergizes the benefits of both ViT and DenseNet to advance lung disease diagnosis using chest X-ray images. The hybrid model uses both …

From Coastal Retreat To Seaward Growth: Emergent Behaviors From Paired Community Beach Nourishment Choices, Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba, Arye Janoff, Oshane Thomas, Di Jin, Porter Hoagland, Andrew Ashton
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Coastal communities often address shoreline erosion through beach nourishment, adding externally sourced sand to widen beaches for recreation and property protection. While nourishment enhances beachfront property values, the need for periodic maintenance creates interdependencies where the actions of neighboring communities affect local shoreline dynamics. Using a coupled model of two neighboring communities, we examine the interplay between community nourishment decisions and the redistribution of nourishment sand. We find that the value a community places on wider beaches not only influences their propensity to nourish, but also their and their neighbors' nourishment efficiency and net benefits. Communities that nourish more frequently …

Time-Evolved Constant Voltage Conductivity Measurements Of Common Spaceborne Polymeric Materials, Brian Wood, David King, Jr Dennison
Journal Articles
Long-duration current measurements were made for low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyimide (PI), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), and biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) to determine their bulk conductivity near room temperature as a function of time. These common thin-film spacecraft material samples were vacuum baked to remove moisture and volatile contaminants to better simulate space conditions. The constant voltage conductivity (CVC) method used a very stable, low-noise dc voltage source and measured the resulting current in a parallel plate geometry. Due to the extremely low conductivity of these four polymeric materials, extended experiments of up to ten days were necessary to establish equilibrium …
