Current research on the academic writing performance of EFL students has identified a number of robust factors. These factors include self-efficacy, metacognition, and a growth mindset. In the area of academic writing performance, however, there is a paucity of research combining these factors into a single study. In light of this, the purpose of this research was to conduct a structural model evaluation to investigate the relationships between self-efficacy, metacognition, a growth mindset, and academic writing performance. In this research, academic writing performance was situated within the context of EFL undergraduate thesis writing. The respondents of this study were 464 …

The demand for proficient English language teachers has increased significantly in non-native English-speaking countries, emphasizing the need for effective teacher training programs. This study investigated the influence of the CELTA/TESOL certification on non-native English teachers’ practical teaching knowledge and efficacy perceptions in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting. A qualitative approach was employed, and data were collected via semistructured interviews. The participants comprised eight Iranian EFL teachers who completed the CELTA/TESOL certification program. Before the certification course, the teachers exhibited diverse teaching approaches, emphasizing teacher-centered methods. Their confidence levels varied, and they faced challenges in classroom management and …

Language reflects how people think and behave in their culture. To have successful conversations, both language use and cultural awareness should be taken into consideration. Undeniably, Japanese grammar is different from Thai making it even harder for Thai learners to have fluent and appropriate conversations in the Japanese language. In the classroom, typically teachers often focus on grammar, leaving less time for students to practice conversation. Consequently, beginner learners often miss cultural details in conversations and are unable to communicate effectively. Thus, it is important for teachers to immerse students in the Japanese culture to improve their speaking skills and …

Hierarchical Multi-Label Text Classification In Earth Science Datasets, Rajashree Dahal Jan 2024

Hierarchical Multi-Label Text Classification In Earth Science Datasets, Rajashree Dahal

Theses

This thesis addresses the challenging problem of hierarchical multi-label text classification and introduces a novel zero-shot approach that recommends the label up to the depth of hierarchy in which it is confident. In order to validate the efficacy of the proposed method, we experimented using various potential embedding models such as text-embedding-ada-002, mpnet-all, instructor embeddings, and nasa-smd-ibm-st on Earth science datasets. The experimental results reveal that all considered embedding models surpass the baseline model supervised learning classifier, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed zero-shot approach. This proposed solution can minimize the label imbalance problem typically observed in the supervised learning …

Exploring The Experiences Of A South Asian Client And Facilitators Of Men's Behaviour Change Programs In Western Australia, Madhuri Mathisen Jan 2024

Exploring The Experiences Of A South Asian Client And Facilitators Of Men's Behaviour Change Programs In Western Australia, Madhuri Mathisen

Theses

This study explores the experiences of male perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) attending men’s behaviour change programs in Western Australia from the perspective of program facilitators and a South Asian client. Informed by social and contextual constructionism with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study examines the experience of 10 mixed culture facilitators who worked with South Asian intimate partner violence perpetrators in men’s behaviour change programs and one South Asian client of an intervention. The participants’ experiences were contextualised through a semi-structured interview. The facilitators’ findings revealed that South Asian clients demonstrated patriarchal beliefs with a victim-blaming tendency and …

Becoming The "Bill Of Rights": The First Ten Amendments From Founding To Reconstruction, Kurt T. Lash Jan 2024

Becoming The "Bill Of Rights": The First Ten Amendments From Founding To Reconstruction, Kurt T. Lash

Law Faculty Publications

The first ten amendments to the federal Constitution have no formal title. It is only by cultural tradition that Americans refer to these provisions as our national “Bill of Rights.” Until recently, most scholars assumed that this tradition could be traced back to the moment of ratification. Over the last decade or so, however, a number of scholars have challenged this assumption. These “Bill of Rights revisionists” claim that Americans did not commonly refer to the first ten amendments as “the bill of rights” until the twentieth century. Prior to that, most Americans either did not believe they had a …

The (Still) Unexplored Possibilities Of A Poetics Of Law, Naomi Mezey Jan 2024

The (Still) Unexplored Possibilities Of A Poetics Of Law, Naomi Mezey

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this contribution to the symposium celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of James Boyd White’s The Legal Imagination, I have accepted White’s invitation in the last chapter of his magisterial book to think about poems and judicial opinions as compatible acts of imagination and meaning making. White asks brilliant questions, and his book is full of them, each a nugget of insight and also a prod that asks the reader to think harder, think deeper, revisit her first thoughts, to perhaps change her mind, and above all, with guidance, to educate herself. In this chapter of the book, White is …

Conducting Research Within The Acronym: Problematizing Lgbtiq+ Research In Psychology, Amanda Klysing, Marta Prandelli, Miguel Roselló-Peñaloza, Daniel Alonso, Madison Gray, Jessica Glazier, Sarah Swanson, Yu-Chi Wang

Psychology

LGBTIQ+ research acknowledges shared experiences of groups marginalized due to gender identities, sexualities, and sex characteristics. This universalist coalition approach has resulted in much affirmational research and progressive policy development. However, it risks homogenizing the unique experiences and needs of specific groups; a risk lessened by a particularist subgroup approach. In this theoretical paper, we reflect on the challenges of a coalition or subgroup approach by considering interdependencies and boundaries between sex, gender, and sexuality-based identities. Through tracing the historical development of LGBTIQ+ research and activism and using examples from intersex studies, intersectionality, and political actions, we explore tensions between …

Redefining Nationalism And Patriotism In Iran And Azerbaijan: Exploring Fathali Akhundzade's Modernist Perspective, Muharrem Bagir Jan 2024

Redefining Nationalism And Patriotism In Iran And Azerbaijan: Exploring Fathali Akhundzade's Modernist Perspective, Muharrem Bagir

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Fathali Akhundzade emerged as a preeminent figure among Muslim intellectuals and modernists of the nineteenth century, whose intellectual legacy profoundly impacted societies in Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. For the first time, he proposed various concepts and ideas, including Islamic Protestantism, alphabet reform and modern education, as well as nationalism, ideas that are still controversial. Among his ideas, those regarding religion and patriotism have been more controversial than others, so that many scholars have offered conflicting interpretations of his ideas. For example, many in Iran consider him the founder of Persian nationalism, while others primarily in Azerbaijan and Turkey portray him …

Project Portfolio: Stronger Together Virtual Clergy Groups In Small Congregations, John Fillmore Jan 2024

Project Portfolio: Stronger Together Virtual Clergy Groups In Small Congregations, John Fillmore

Doctor of Ministry

Ministers in small congregations suffer from isolation and a lack of personal and professional relationships that can encourage and equip them for more effective ministry. Ministry in smaller congregations combines the common continuous responsibilities of pastoral ministry in a context in which pastors are often overburdened with competing expectations and demands. Often serving as a solo minister, clergy are isolated in dispersed congregational settings and struggle to find time to participate in supportive relationships with other pastors. Utilizing discovery workshops and numerous qualitative interviews, this project found a nearly universal desire for meaningful relationships between pastors, as well as consistent …

Befriending Doubt: Finding Freedom And Belonging In The Face Of Uncertainty, Jana Koh Jan 2024

Befriending Doubt: Finding Freedom And Belonging In The Face Of Uncertainty, Jana Koh

Doctor of Ministry

The NPO for this project is as follows: American Millennials (adults aged 25-45) experience a lack of safety and welcome in their communities of faith during a season of spiritual doubt, causing them to disengage from their communities of faith and falling into risk of negative outcomes.

Throughout history, from Galileo to the American Colonies to present day, the church has not handled those who experience doubt in their faith with care, leaving the doubter feeling unsafe or unwelcome in their community of faith. However, a close reading of Scripture reveals that God is not intimidated or deterred by doubt; …

The Effects Of Multimodal Communication With Discourse In People With Chronic Aphasia, Elizabeth Grace Peeler Jan 2024

The Effects Of Multimodal Communication With Discourse In People With Chronic Aphasia, Elizabeth Grace Peeler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose

Individuals with aphasia often experience communication breakdowns. One strategy that has been shown to be useful is switching communication modalities when a breakdown occurs. While many researchers have incorporated and shown positive effects of multimodality in aphasia treatment, few studies have utilized a discourse task to generalize the methods trained during the structured tasks to everyday life. The purpose of Multimodal Communication Treatment + Discourse and Group (MCT+DG) is to train various communication modalities in both structured and unstructured settings, which include a discourse and group therapy to help generalizing the skills in daily communication.

Method

Two participants with …

"Who Are The Landlords Here?" - Group Rights In The Age Of Populism: Jewish Ownership Of Symbolic And Geographic Space In Israel, Meital Pinto

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The world is witnessing the rise offar-right political parties. In Israel's recent national legislative election, Jewish Power (Otzma Yehudit), a far-right, anti-Arab political party, reached an unprecedented achievement. The party won six seats in the Knesset and its leader, Itamar Ben Gvir was appointed as the Minister of National Security. "Who are the Landlords Here?" was the party's election slogan; it signals that Jews should not only own the state but also its public space. This normative political statement aligns with the dominant attitude towards group rights for the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel. The dominant attitude perceives group rights in …

Sounds Marks, Deborah Gerhardt, Jon J. Lee

Faculty Articles

A lion roars just before a film rolls. A doughboy giggles. A giant green man laughs a hearty, “Ho, Ho, Ho.” These iconic sounds are all federally registered as trademarks. They identify specific brands and distinguish their products and services from the competition. Human brains treat sounds like these as categorization tools and cognitive shortcuts—ideal trademark symbols. But what about the sounds your favorite toys or electronic devices make? Or those made by a fictional character in the latest block- buster? This Article tackles these issues and others. We push back against the widely-held belief that all unconventional trade-marks—product designs, …

Neurosymbolic Ai Approach To Attribution In Large Language Models, Deepa Tilwani, Revathy Venkataramanan, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2024

Neurosymbolic Ai Approach To Attribution In Large Language Models, Deepa Tilwani, Revathy Venkataramanan, Amit P. Sheth

Faculty Publications

Attribution in large language models (LLMs) remains a significant challenge, particularly in ensuring the factual accuracy and reliability of the generated outputs. Current methods for citation or attribution, such as those employed by tools like Perplexity.ai and Bing Search-integrated LLMs, attempt to ground responses by providing real-time search results and citations. However, so far, these approaches suffer from issues such as hallucinations, biases, surface-level relevance matching, and the complexity of managing vast, unfiltered knowledge sources. While tools like Perplexity.ai dynamically integrate web-based information and citations, they often rely on inconsistent sources such as blog posts or unreliable sources, which limits …

A Comparative Study Of Teacher-Student Verbal Interaction In Primary School Mathematics Classroom Teachers --Taking Novice Teachers And Expert Teachers As Examples, Qiong Zhang, Ying Wang Jan 2024

A Comparative Study Of Teacher-Student Verbal Interaction In Primary School Mathematics Classroom Teachers --Taking Novice Teachers And Expert Teachers As Examples, Qiong Zhang, Ying Wang

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Teacher-student verbal interaction is a key method of encouraging active learning and participation in classroom activities. It significantly improves the effectiveness of teaching and learning in primary mathematics. Teachers at different developmental stages show obvious behavioral differences in the process of classroom interaction with students, and an in-depth analysis of these differences can help promote the professional growth of novice teachers. Based on the Classroom Smart Evaluation System (CSMS), this study compares and analyzes the teacher-student interaction behaviors of novice and expert teachers based on two co-curricular lessons on multiplication of 5 in second-grade primary mathematics. It was found that …

The Dynamics Of The Chana Community Network Movement: Strategic Shifts, Impacts, And Reflections On Thailand's Political Landscape, Abdullah Yuhannan Jan 2024

The Dynamics Of The Chana Community Network Movement: Strategic Shifts, Impacts, And Reflections On Thailand's Political Landscape, Abdullah Yuhannan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This dissertation examines the dynamics of the Chana Community Movement, one of Thailand’s most enduring grassroots movements. Originating in the early 1990s with opposition to illegal commercial fishing, the movement has evolved to resist the Chana Industrial Estate Project. The research addresses key questions concerning factors sustaining the movement, tactical adaptations, societal impacts, and its reflection of Thailand’s contemporary political landscape. The study employs a qualitative research methodology, combining document analysis, in-depth interviews, and participant observation, alongside analytical frameworks derived from political struggle studies and social movement theories for comprehensive analysis. The findings reveal that the Chana Community Movement succeeded …
