Struggle For Economic Plurality; Economies Of Belonging: Subsistence, Indigneity, And The Contradictions And Margins Of Capitalism In The Andean Highlands, Mario Renato Cavani Quevedo Nov 2025

Struggle For Economic Plurality; Economies Of Belonging: Subsistence, Indigneity, And The Contradictions And Margins Of Capitalism In The Andean Highlands, Mario Renato Cavani Quevedo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the collective-oriented economy of the Viacha Highlands, a Quechua community in Cusco, Peru, to show how subsistence agriculture, reciprocity, and ritual practices constitute a coherent non-capitalist system of provisioning and belonging. Drawing on one year of ethnographic immersion, the study situates Viacha’s economy within the Community Economies framework, foregrounding its three commitments: anti- essentialism, pluriversality, and ethical–political praxis. Findings reveal that practices such as ayni-ayni (reciprocal labor exchange) and faina (communal work) resist reduction to wage labor, coexist alongside monetary and capitalist dynamics, and ground social reproduction in responsibility and care. At the same time, capitalist schooling, …

Data were drawn from an existing ongoing clinical trial in the IHOPE lab of the University of South Florida, who collaborates with over 10 pediatric cancer survivorship clinics across the country. The study used a total of 26 (13 Spanish-speaking and 13 English-speaking) structured interview transcripts from parent participants. The transcripts were the first session with the parent participant, the interventionist spoke the parent’s preferred language (English or Spanish), perceived parental vulnerability was one of six …

Effects Of Code Scaffolding In Increasing Student Confidence In Programming Cryptography, John Denny Nov 2025

Effects Of Code Scaffolding In Increasing Student Confidence In Programming Cryptography, John Denny

LSU Master's Theses

Cryptography is essential for secure communications, and new threats require more students willing to program and interact with cryptographic systems. Previous research is focused on tools for teaching these systems at a high level, teaching through attacks against these systems, and proper use of these systems in software development. In this paper, we seek to design a workshop to use scaffolded Python code to teach how these cryp- tographic systems are designed. We explore the use of code scaffolding for students to program an example implementation of the McEliece crypto- graphic system to build confidence in working with these systems. …

Social Media Sponsorship: Metrics And Strategies For Finding The Right Content Creator-Sponsor Matches, Shahryar Doosti, Stephanie Lee, Young Tan Nov 2025

Social Media Sponsorship: Metrics And Strategies For Finding The Right Content Creator-Sponsor Matches, Shahryar Doosti, Stephanie Lee, Young Tan

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Social media video sponsorship, where sponsors partner with content creators to promote their brands, has become increasingly popular. Leveraging rich data on sponsored and nonsponsored videos on Facebook, we introduce two metrics, Content Similarity and Audience Closeness, to help sponsors find effective creator-sponsor matches. Content Similarity captures the thematic alignment between a creator’s content and a sponsor’s brand, whereas Audience Closeness measures how closely aligned a creator’s and sponsor’s audiences are within a social media network. We find that both metrics significantly increase video viewership, but their effects vary over time. Audience Closeness generates more immediate, short-term engagement, whereas …

Systematic Review Of Elementary Cybersecurity Education: Curriculum, Pedagogy, And Barriers, Na Liu, Siyu Long, Florence Martin

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Abstract -As children increasingly engage with digital platforms, the need for effective cybersecurity education has become urgent. This systematic review synthesizes 81 studies published between 2017 and 2024 to examine global curricula research focus and topics, pedagogical approaches and assessment methods, and key challenges in elementary cybersecurity education. The findings reveal six major thematic categories: student awareness, parental mediation, teacher engagement, curriculum design, community and policy support, and pedagogical innovation. Among instructional strategies, game-based learning and narrative storytelling emerge as the most frequently explored. Despite this growth, major gaps remain in curriculum consistency, teacher preparation, assessment rigor, and stakeholder coordination. …

Trustworthiness Of Responsible Gambling Ads: How Sponsor Type And Message Framing Affect Emerging Adults Who Sports Bet, Chance Vijit Dow Nov 2025

Trustworthiness Of Responsible Gambling Ads: How Sponsor Type And Message Framing Affect Emerging Adults Who Sports Bet, Chance Vijit Dow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Sports betting among emerging adults (ages 18-29) is linked to financial harm, academic decline, and psychological distress. Responsible gambling (RG) messages aim to reduce such harms, yet generic slogans like “Gamble Responsibly” often lack credibility, especially when sponsored by gambling operators. Guided by social influence theory, this study examined how message framing (generic vs. self-appraisal) and sponsorship (operator vs. non-operator) affects trust, behavioral intentions, and gambling desire among emerging adult sports bettors. Participants (N = 255; Mage = 24.77) from Tennessee and bordering states completed a 2 x 2 between-subjects experiment viewing novel RG video advertisements. Department of Health-sponsored ads …

The Impact Of Geographic And Community Diversity On The Transitionary Experiences Of International College Athletes, Marek Taškár, Chris Corr, Nicole Sellars, Sarah Stokowski, Karina Jolly, Trevor Bopp Nov 2025

The Impact Of Geographic And Community Diversity On The Transitionary Experiences Of International College Athletes, Marek Taškár, Chris Corr, Nicole Sellars, Sarah Stokowski, Karina Jolly, Trevor Bopp

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

International college athletes migrating to the United States for athletic competition encounter unique challenges such as language barriers, cultural adjustment, and familial detachment. These obstacles can hinder international college athletes’ transition compared to those of domestic athletes. While supportive programming and personnel have been illustrated to ease the transition and foster acculturation among international college athletes, the impact of the geographic location of an institution may impact the acculturation process for international college athletes. Given the importance of acculturation to athletic and academic success, this study examined how cultural diversity within communities hosting NCAA member institutions affects international college athletes’ …

Causation’S Due Process Dimensions, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Charles W. “Rocky” Rhodes Nov 2025

Causation’S Due Process Dimensions, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Charles W. “Rocky” Rhodes

Texas A&M Law Review

For decades, courts have grappled with the tension between compensating victims of mass harms and maintaining fairness to defendants when causation is difficult to prove. This Article argues that the Supreme Court’s due process jurisprudence provides a relevant framework for navigating this tension. We contend that the Court over the last three decades has established a consistent Fourteenth Amendment due process approach in punitive damages and personal jurisdiction cases, which is rooted in antecedents tracing to the nineteenth century and relies on a nexus of interests that balances individual rights, state interests, and federalism concerns. This framework, we argue, has …

The Aesthetic Dimensions Of Syntactic Deviation In The Rhymed Poem Of Al-ʿAbbās Ibn Al-Aḥnaf – “The Beloved Was Angry, And Thus My Tears Were Stirred…”, Tami Daghleeb Al-Shamrani Nov 2025

The Aesthetic Dimensions Of Syntactic Deviation In The Rhymed Poem Of Al-ʿAbbās Ibn Al-Aḥnaf – “The Beloved Was Angry, And Thus My Tears Were Stirred…”, Tami Daghleeb Al-Shamrani

UB Journal for Humanities

This study explores syntactic deviation (inziyāḥ tarkībī) in the poetry of al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Aḥnaf (d. 194 AH), focusing on his rāʾiyya poem that opens with: “The beloved grew angry, and my weeping stirred— By God, I am haunted by what I fear.”Syntactic deviation—defined as the intentional violation of strict grammatical norms—is examined as a linguistic and rhetorical phenomenon that departs from conventional structures. This particular poem was chosen for its rich deployment of stylistic devices and for showcasing the poet’s expressive power and sincere emotional tone. The study concentrates on two primary forms of deviation: inversion (taqdīm wa-taʾkhīr) and grammatical shift …

#Willsmith: Text Analyses Of X Posts About The Oscar Slap, Merrisa Lin, Nairán Ramírez-Esparza

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Social media users share their thoughts on social events, offering insights into the sociocultural climate. Since language reflects related culture, analyzing social media discussions in different languages provides a window into the sociocultural context. In this exploratory study, we examined English and Spanish posts related to the Oscar Slap, which sparked race and gender discussions. We analyzed X posts with #willsmith hashtag in English (N = 28,717) and in Spanish (N = 4,251). The Meaning Extraction Method automated text analyses revealed three similar themes across language cultures, a theme specific to English posts, and two themes unique to Spanish posts. …

Does The Law Ever Run Out?, Charles F. Capps Nov 2025

Does The Law Ever Run Out?, Charles F. Capps

Notre Dame Law Review

Although laypeople commonly believe that a judge’s job is to decide every case as the law requires, a broad consensus exists among legal scholars that the law not infrequently “runs out,” leaving the judge to decide the case on extralegal grounds. This Article subjects that consensus to critical scrutiny. Tentatively, the Article concludes that none of the alleged sources of indeterminacy in the law—including permissive rules, balancing tests, vagueness, ambiguity, silence, contradictions, and uncertainty—actually causes the law to run out. More confidently, the Article maintains that the extent to which the law runs out, if it does at all, depends …

Habeas Corpus And Void Judgments, David Kinnaird Nov 2025

Habeas Corpus And Void Judgments, David Kinnaird

Notre Dame Law Review

In a string of recent opinions, Justice Gorsuch and Justice Thomas have posited that postconviction relief upon a writ of habeas corpus was historically unavailable except where the judgment of conviction was issued by a court lacking jurisdiction. In light of this history, Justices Gorsuch and Thomas have argued for a reconsideration of the modern scope of the writ, which generally allows for relitigation of alleged constitutional error in the course of criminal trial.

This Article argues that Justices Gorsuch and Thomas have the history half right. They are correct to assert that a valid judgment of conviction was a …

Beyond Phonics: Neuroaesthetic And Symbolic Divergence In Culturally Responsive Dyslexia Screening, Piper Hutson, James Hutson Nov 2025

Beyond Phonics: Neuroaesthetic And Symbolic Divergence In Culturally Responsive Dyslexia Screening, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

Recent advances in neuroscience and educational technology have challenged the traditional phonological-deficit model of dyslexia, revealing the profound influence of visual-symbolic processing, neuroaesthetic resonance, and cultural context in the reading brain. This article interrogates prevailing assessment paradigms by synthesizing research on the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA), cross-linguistic literacy systems, and emerging neurodiversity frameworks. The study addresses the urgent need to reconceptualize dyslexia as a heterogeneous divergence in symbolic processing—rooted as much in neuroaesthetic and visuospatial alignment as in phonemic awareness. Existing screeners, predominantly optimized for English and other Latin-based scripts, systematically neglect the cognitive realities of learners in multilingual …

A Sociocognitive Approach To Second Language Acquisition: Integrating Neurodiversity And Advocacy In Language Learning, Brian Kapustka

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This project, A Sociocognitive Approach to Second Language Acquisition: Integrating Neurodiversity and Advocacy in Language Learning, serves as a pedagogical framework and instructional resource designed for world language educators. Grounded in Atkinson’s (2011) Sociocognitive SLA model, the project synthesizes cognitive, sociocultural, ecological, and embodied perspectives to illuminate how language learning emerges through dynamic interactions among mind, body, and environment. It further integrates contemporary neurodiversity research—addressing ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, and other cognitive profiles—to propose strength-based, multimodal strategies that support diverse learners. Drawing on the work of Swain, Norton, van Lier, and others, the project emphasizes identity, emotion, and advocacy as …

How Warm-Versus Competent-Toned Ai Apologies Affect Trust And Forgiveness Through Emotions And Perceived Sincerity, Joon Soo Lim, Nalae Hong, Erika J. Schneider

Media Studies - All Scholarship

As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) becomes more integrated into corporate communication, its role in crisis messaging raises critical questions about audience perception and trust. Drawing on theories of machine heuristics, this study explores how relational cues in AI-authored crisis apologies shape emotional and cognitive responses that ultimately influence trust and forgiveness. A 3 (authorship attribution: AI vs. human vs. control) x 2 (relational tone: warmth vs. competence) between-subjects factorial design with 464 participants was conducted to assess if and how incorporating a warm tone into AI-generated apologies can help overcome AI's inherent limitations associated with machine heuristics. Results show that …

Composition Pedagogy As Ai‑Native Coding: From Design Kit To Scholarly Framework, Daniel Plate, James Hutson Nov 2025

Composition Pedagogy As Ai‑Native Coding: From Design Kit To Scholarly Framework, Daniel Plate, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This article advances a field-ready framework that reconceives first-year composition as AI-native coding, translating a complete “design kit” into scholarly method, evaluative protocol, and curriculum architecture. Background: Contemporary composition pedagogy emphasizes process, genre awareness, and collaborative revision; meanwhile, modern software practice operationalizes iteration through version control, test-driven development, and continuous integration. The uploaded kit demonstrates that these cultures are isomorphic: writing stages align with SDLC phases, and automated pipelines can lint prose, execute argument “tests,” and publish artifacts with auditable histories. Approach: The study systematizes that kit into (1) a conceptual map that recasts authorship as orchestration and verification, (2) …

A Framework To Retrieve Relevant Laws For Will Execution, Md Asiful Islam, Alice Saebom Kwak, Derek E. Bambauer, Clayton T. Morrison, Mihai Surdeanu Nov 2025

A Framework To Retrieve Relevant Laws For Will Execution, Md Asiful Islam, Alice Saebom Kwak, Derek E. Bambauer, Clayton T. Morrison, Mihai Surdeanu

UF Law Faculty Publications

Wills must comply with jurisdiction-specific statutory provisions to be valid, but retrieving the relevant laws for execution, validation, and probate remains labor-intensive and error-prone. Prior legal information retrieval (LIR) research has addressed contracts, criminal law, and judicial decisions, but wills and probate law remain largely unexplored, with no prior work on retrieving statutes for will validity assessment. We propose a legal information retrieval framework that combines lexical and semantic retrieval in a hybrid pipeline with large language model (LLM) reasoning to retrieve the most relevant provisions for a will statement. Evaluations on annotated will-statement datasets from the U.S. states of …

Presidentialism In Post-Conflict Kachin Constitution: Political Imagination, Institutional Realities, And Executive Design, Dashi Blessing Seng Htoi Lu Nov 2025

Presidentialism In Post-Conflict Kachin Constitution: Political Imagination, Institutional Realities, And Executive Design, Dashi Blessing Seng Htoi Lu

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the relationship between cultural identity, political imagination, and constitutional design in the Kachin context, focusing on the strong preference for presidentialism among political thinkers and interim constitution drafters. Rooted in traditions of armed resistance, charismatic leadership, and the desire for visible sovereignty, presidentialism is widely viewed as the most viable executive model for a post-conflict Kachin future. Yet this preference is often shaped more by symbolic ideals than by a clear understanding of the structural demands of democratic governance.

At the heart of this vision lies the expectation of a strong president: directly elected, culturally rooted, and …

The Use Of Science In Climate Governance: Bridging Diplomacy, Public Engagement, And Negotiation Interfaces, Janice Golding Nov 2025

The Use Of Science In Climate Governance: Bridging Diplomacy, Public Engagement, And Negotiation Interfaces, Janice Golding

New England Journal of Public Policy

Climate science appears to have come of age, marked by methodological rigor, interdisciplinary integration, and broad consensus. Negotiators in climate multilateralism navigate a complex terrain shaped by politics, economics, and social dynamics, where science may be treated as an insouciant factor in negotiation strategies. As climate change intensifies beyond the 1.5°C threshold, there is a growing risk that science will become even more marginalized in global governance. This could drown out the scientific authority of mandated institutions and create a disconnect between negotiation processes and the evolving role of science, undermining science’s potential to offer renewed relevance and solutions. Urgent …

Integrating Goal-Setting Into An Urban Community College Developmental Mathematics Course: A Multi-Perspective Learning Experience, Tamie S. Dickson Nov 2025

Integrating Goal-Setting Into An Urban Community College Developmental Mathematics Course: A Multi-Perspective Learning Experience, Tamie S. Dickson

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Developmental mathematics (DM) students often encounter systemic and contextual obstacles in higher education. Low self-efficacy, math anxiety, multiple external demands, and pervasive gaps in prerequisite knowledge can all undermine the strategic behaviors needed to manage the academic environment independently. Although DM reforms are widely researched, the literature lacks a firsthand perspective on the daily processes students apply as they assume control over their learning. This qualitative action research study investigated the integration of intentional goal-setting into a recently redesigned one-level pilot DM course at an open-access, urban community college. The practitioner-researcher created the PATHway framework—rooted in Zimmerman’s (2000) three-phase Self-Regulated …
