Exploring Mathematics Teachers’ Understanding And Implementation Of Effective Questioning As A Pedagogical Tool, Joslyn M. Vilabrera
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
This dissertation explores elementary mathematics teachers' understanding and implementation of effective questioning techniques within the instructional context. A qualitative, multiple case study design was employed for this dissertation in practice. This study was conducted in a K-5 school in Florida, focusing on four elementary school teachers in grades 3-5. Data collected included semi-structured interviews and live observations. Analysis of transcripts from interviews and observational notes provided an insider look into teachers’ planning and implementation of questioning.
The research was driven by two research questions: How do teachers implement questioning in mathematics instruction? and What factors influence teachers' planning and implementation …

Using Advocacy Coaches To Examine Trauma-Informed Classroom Practices Used To Support Students With Disabilities: A Qualitative Study, Fanica Young
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Childhood trauma, often referred to as America’s hidden crisis, significantly impacts the learning and behavior of students with disabilities (SWD), in particular. SWD who experience or witness trauma face challenges related to discipline, academic achievement, absenteeism, and social and emotional well-being. According to the National Survey on Children’s Health (2021), 16.3% of children served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act have encountered two or more adverse childhood experiences by age 18, with over half of the states surpassing the national average. Addressing this urgent concern is difficult due to a shortage of qualified service providers, such as nurses, psychologists, …
Sectarianism And Elite Strategies In Fueling Conflict: Evidence From Iraq Under Saddam Hussein And Nouri Al Maliki, Mohammed Al Awwad
Sectarianism And Elite Strategies In Fueling Conflict: Evidence From Iraq Under Saddam Hussein And Nouri Al Maliki, Mohammed Al Awwad
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
What contributes to sectarian conflict? Some existing literature essentializes sectarian identities and blames ancient hatred between different groups as the cause of conflict, this thesis argues that sectarian conflict occurs when sectarianism is politically employed by elite actors facing state weakness. The proposed theory suggests that a drop in state capacity regardless of the cause, can motivate political elite actors to instrumentalize the salience of sectarian identities as a form of either repression or cooptation targeting the sectarian outgroup for the purposes of regime survival. The theoretical claims in this study are examined using a qualitative comparative case study analysis …
Dress To Impress: New Composition Instructors' Interpretations And Embodiment Of Professionalism As Displayed Through Dress, Jacqueline C. Cano Diaz
Dress To Impress: New Composition Instructors' Interpretations And Embodiment Of Professionalism As Displayed Through Dress, Jacqueline C. Cano Diaz
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
While previous research in rhetoric and composition investigates how novice composition instructors negotiate the boundaries of professionalism and identity (Dall'Alba; Grouling; Restaino), the role of dress, or "performative strategic attire" (Mckoy), in crafting these teaching personas has not yet been explored. Viewing everyday dress choices through the lens of embodied rhetoric allows for a deeper understanding of the complex decision-making process of choosing what to wear (Woodward). Further, analyzing dress choice through embodied rhetoric showcases how clothing becomes a tool to craft a persona and inhabit an identity or role. Through positioning instructor's self-identity and naming their experiences and influences …

Understanding Health-Seeking Decision-Making Process And Behavior Among Haitian Immigrants: A Grounded Theory Approach, Shelleta Ladonice
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Black people in the U.S. die at younger ages, have significantly higher rates of death from treatable medical conditions, are more likely to have late-stage breast and colon cancer diagnoses and more likely to die from these cancers, and are at higher risk for chronic illnesses compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Accessing healthcare is crucial to health and well-being; however, U.S. immigrants' use of healthcare services is far less than native-born Americans. Haitian immigrants experience health disparities at the highest rate compared to other Black immigrants in the U.S. Given their unique history, culture, and immigration experience, it …

The History Of -Eer In English: Suffix Competition Or Symbiosis?, Zachary Dukic, Chris C. Palmer
The History Of -Eer In English: Suffix Competition Or Symbiosis?, Zachary Dukic, Chris C. Palmer
Graduate Publications – English
Ecological models of competition have provided great explanatory power regarding synonymy in derivational morphology. Competition models of this type have certainly shown their utility, as they have demonstrated, among other things, the relevance of frequency measures, productivity, compositionality and analyzability when comparing the development of morphological constructions. There has been less consideration of alternative models that could be used to describe the historical co-development of suffixes that produce words with sometimes similar forms or meanings but are not inevitably or solely in competition. The symbiotic model proposed in this article may help answer larger questions in linguistics, such as how …

The research first examines user responses to toxic content, focusing on behavioral and emotional reactions, as well as group dynamics and bystander effects in toxic interactions. Another key focus is public opinion toward health interventions, particularly COVID-19 vaccination, using geolocated posts and analyzing factors such as race, ethnicity, and …
The Emerging Crime Of Persecution Based On Sexual Orientation, Anthony J. Colangelo
The Emerging Crime Of Persecution Based On Sexual Orientation, Anthony J. Colangelo
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
This Article argues that persecution based on sexual
orientation constitutes a crime against humanity under international law.
Unlike other scholarship that has focused on the definition of crimes against
humanity in the 1998 Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court—
which does not explicitly enumerate “sexual orientation” as a protected
classification—this Article looks to customary international law made up by
the practices of states.
Diligent research has revealed that between 1998 and 2022, at least 107
states enacted laws or revised existing laws decriminalizing sexual
orientation and/or categorizing sexual orientation as a protected
classification from discrimination. This is in addition …

Researcher Access To Social Media Data: Lessons From Clinical Trial Data Sharing, Christopher J. Morten, Gabriel Nicholas, Salomé Viljoen
Faculty Articles
For years, social media companies have sparred with lawmakers over how much independent access to platform data they should provide researchers. Sharing data with researchers allows the public to better understand the risks and harms associated with social media, including areas such as misinformation, child safety, and political polarization. Yet researcher access is controversial. Privacy advocates and companies raise the potential privacy threats of researchers using such data irresponsibly. In addition, social media companies raise concerns over trade secrecy: the data these companies hold and the algorithms powered by that data are secretive sources of competitive advantage. This Article shows …
Influence Of Mouse Motor Cortex On Vocal Musculature, César D. M. Vargas
Influence Of Mouse Motor Cortex On Vocal Musculature, César D. M. Vargas
Student Theses and Dissertations
Learned vocal communication and spoken language are complex behaviors we have long sought to understand. Studying the neurobiology of speech and language will be advanced by investigating its component traits in model organisms. Most vertebrates share common brainstem circuits for vocalization, and they produce innate vocal repertoires over which the animals have little to no control. Vocal learners can imitate heard sounds, and thus have a high degree of control over their vocalizations. Vocal learning species have a direct projection from the pallial forebrain to the brainstem vocal motor neurons, which facilitate their vocal dexterity. Songbirds have been the standard …

The aim of this study is to explicate the professional identity of instructors who implement a CRE within an established iREC and to explore how this identity contributes to the success of these programs. 97 CRE instructors from the Science Education Alliance (SEA) iREC participated in a 2-year, multi-stage, qualitative research project …
Exploring The Effects Of Art Therapy Interventions On Self-Evaluations Of Food Addiction: A Randomized Control Study, Dawn Fiacco
Exploring The Effects Of Art Therapy Interventions On Self-Evaluations Of Food Addiction: A Randomized Control Study, Dawn Fiacco
Art Therapy | Doctoral Dissertations
Processed sugar is highly addictive and associated with chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Often, people know that eating processed sugar has negative health consequences but continue to do so, possibly for emotional reasons. The gap between knowledge and behavior makes treating eating issues difficult. Art therapy is a nonverbal modality and could possibly circumvent usual rationalizations, making it an effective way to bridge the cognitive and emotional aspects of problematic eating. This randomized control, mixed methods study was conducted to examine whether a 7-week art directive program could help people with self-identified problematic …

Three Essays On Financial Information, Disclosures, And Ethics, Ankit Kapur
Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation aims to study the impact of different sources of financial information and corporate policies on outcomes that are relevant to researchers, regulators, finance professionals, financial institutions, and investors.
In the first essay, I show that credit rating change announcements disclose a new form of value-relevant information to the market. Issuer credit rating downgrades (upgrades) inform the market about equity underpricing (overpricing). This is reflected by a significant association between a firm’s downgrade (upgrade) and increase (decrease) in the anomalous stock underpricing (overpricing). Furthermore, I show how this mispricing gets corrected over time by analyzing the returns after the …
Improvement Of Hypertension Self-Care Management In African American Older Adults With Uncontrolled Hypertension Through Shared Decision-Making, Sigga Jobe
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Background: Hypertension affects nearly half of the population in the U.S., with the prevalence disproportionately higher in African Americans (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023). Complications of uncontrolled hypertension, such as cardiovascular disorders and stroke, increase with age, prompting the importance of controlling high blood pressure in older adults. African American older adults are at higher risk of developing uncontrolled hypertension and related complications due to the lack of healthcare access, financial constraints leading to the inability to access healthier food choices, exercise capabilities, weight control, adherence to recommended medications, and knowledge deficit.
Methods: This project focused on …

(Di)Versification: Transgressive Poetics In The Twenty-First Century Classroom, Ronnie K. Stephens
English Dissertations - Archive
(Di)versification: Transgressive Poetics in the Twenty-First Century Classroom pairs literary analysis with pedagogical implications in an attempt to argue for the increased use of poetry in the classroom as a mechanism to subvert anti-ethnic and anti-LGBTQ censorship efforts. I argue in favor of a structuralist approach to analyzing early twenty-first century poetry in the transgressive classroom as a site of resistance against legislative efforts to censor or prohibit discussions of structural racism in public education. The work is separated into five chapters, each of which interrogates distinct formal traditions in American poetry: received forms, invented forms, erasure, nontraditional forms, and …
Identification And Quantification Of Authorial Style Similarity, Mary E. Koone Phd
Identification And Quantification Of Authorial Style Similarity, Mary E. Koone Phd
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This thesis studies the topic of identifying author similarity, grouping authors together based on that similarity. To solve that problem, the thesis proposes concrete solutions to a series of subproblems. The initial sub-problems are: how to identify a pool of possible features for representing documents, and how to select and combine some of those features to map a document into a feature vector. Another sub-problem is how to evaluate the usefulness of such feature vectors in identifying language style similarity. This thesis proposes, as part of addressing that sub-problem, a novel method for evaluating the quality of document representations obtained, …
